July Program July’s program: Club Birthday celebration at the Folsom’s in Woodinville. See pages 6.

This car was first sold by the City Motor Company of Great Falls, Montana on June 14, 1963. A schoolteacher was enamored by it and purchased it off the showroom floor. She maintained it well for 24 years. A relative in Auburn, Washington acquired it from her on February 23, 1987.

I bought the car on September 16, 1988 from an ad on a bulletin board at work. The car was in generally good condition with new upholstery, carpet, top, and top motor. The mileage was 147,000. The car came with

Puget Sound Region VCCA The Puget Sound Region of the Vintage Chevrolet Club of America (PS-VCCA) is dedicated to the preservation, restoration, fun and enjoyment of vintage Chevrolets cars and trucks. Members are not required to own a Chevrolet. PS-VCCA chapter membership is open to all Chevrolet enthusiasts who are members of the Vintage Chevrolet Club of America (VCCA). All Chevys from 1911 through 1977 may be registered with the region. General meetings are held on the 4th Monday of the month at Tillicum Middle School in Bellevue (see below). Meetings in September through May are from 7:30PM to 9:30PM. June and August meetings are announced in this publication. No meetings are held in July or December. Last month I forgot to mention that Evie and I were surprised to find Bob and Florence Helgeson at the Crista Corvette Show. Bob had just put the finishing touches on their ’64 Corvette Roadster. It’s a beauty.

What a great treat many of us had in June at our annual strawberry picnic. A huge thanks goes to Jim and Gail Darby for making the strawberry shortcake deserts. Delicious!

On July 4th, we headed up the 522 to the Maltby intersection. Around the corner was the Folsom's Fabulous Field in the Forest complete with a shaded shelter opening up to a grass field. Behind the shelter in the thick forest is a secluded flush toilet! What will Lee dream up next? We are all invited back to this Fabulous Field on July, 27th, to celebrate our summer birthdays. By the way, this manicured field will hold around 30-40 cars. A great place to have a warm up Chevy show time for the Northwest Meet in August.

Recently I talked to George and Ana Maria Haley. They are working very hard on the NW Meet at Emerald Downs along with a small crew from the Mt. Rainier Region. There is a very special ladies event happening this year at the Meet. It would be great to have a strong turnout of women from our Club to support Ana. She is the architect of this special time and it sounds like it will be exceptional. It is called “An Affair to Remember” and women can invite other women who are not VCCA members.

Also, George and Ana could sure use some of us to pitch in when the Meet occurs and give a helping hand. They will need more people to help out with short tasks at the Meet. This experience could help us plan the Meet we host in 2005.

Another place to help out is on August 9th from 2 - 4 PM on Saturday. The North Cascade Region is having a car display at the Bethany Home nursing care facility at Silver Lake. It’s a way to bring some variety and care to the residents by showing your car. Take the Bothell/Everett HWY, turn east on Lake Heights Drive near Silver Lake just south of 115 th. Lake Heights Drive is a short dead end street. Look for 2235 Lake Heights Dr. In the Relay with you, Rod

the original owner's manuals, a "Lifetime Warranty" certificate and many of the service receipts. A block heater had been added, a necessity in the Montana winters.

The initial replacements were: some trunk and side trim, belts, hoses, shocks, rear springs, license panels, etc. I have detailed the engine compartment and trunk, had the rear bumper re-chromed, and the heads re-worked; adding hardened valve seats. It has a 327 V8 with Powerglide, power steering, power brakes, bumper guards and wire wheel covers.

I had saved the 1963 license plates from my 1962 Impala hardtop when I moved to California in 1964. The plates are in great condition, and are now on the convertible. Coincidentally, this car is the same ermine white exterior with red interior as the 1962 Impala (which I restored this past winter).

This car has taken the bride and groom from the church to the reception on three occasions, top down, of course. It has been fun to drive on tours and to regional meets. In 1989 and 1992 we at-tended the All-California Meet. Both times this car received the award for longest distance driven. In 1996 this car took us to the National VCCA Meet in Rapid City, SD. It has been judged at sev-eral meets and has reached preservation level. George and Anita Warren

Full size cars enjoyed a boxy facelift, with bodyside contours altered to look like major changes had taken place. "Clean-cut as a jewel" the sales brochure claimed, "smooth-riding as a jet". Ads touted such mundane features as "air-washed rocker panels", self-adjusting brakes, and a longer-life ex-haust system. The standard Turbo Fire 283 cid V-8 got a boost to 195 horsepower, the mid-range 327-cid engine yielded 250-340 horsepower, and the big block 409 cranked out 340, 400 or 425 horses. The latter used twin four-barrel carburetors and 11:1 compression. Quite a few buyers skipped the V-8, making do with a 140 horse Turbo Thrift six. On the opposite end of the performance spectrum, a few lucky drag racers were able to obtain one of a handful of cars that were fitted with lightweight aluminum front body panels and held a 427 cid enlarge-ment of the 409 engine. Impalas again sold best, with 832,600 built (including 153,271 Super Sports). Sport Sedans had their own hardtop roofline, and Sport Coupes could now get a vinyl top. Most costly model was aggressive looking SS Impala convertible. Available with any engine, an SS pack-age added $161 to the ragtop's $3024 base price and included heavy duty springs, aluminum trimmed bucket seats, and swirl dashboard inserts. JUNE TOUR to Centralia! It was a cloudy, but pleasant day on the 22nd of June when we started off to Cen-tralia to visit the Swedberg Custom Metal Shop. By the time we arrived we had 5 cars. The Roberts, Warrens, Comstocks, Brownells and the Folsoms. It was a beautiful ride through the countryside east of Centralia. We were greeted by Al Swedberg, and went into his amazing metal shop. Asked where he got his equipment he said a lot of it had come from Auctions and misc. places. Most of it was huge, shrinking and stretching machines. He had a couple of "English wheels" with which he smoothed out all of the wrinkles. He started with a fairly small piece of steel about 40 thousandths thick. He said we are going to make a hood for a midget race car. This was completely flat. We went first to a machine that would stretch the metal at one end, so that it would curve up toward the body of the driver. He used his foot like a sewing machine pedal to move a split-type anvil up and down on a solid anvil. The split anvil came down and separated a bit forcing the metal to become thinner and spread. He did this until the shape he wanted was achieved. Then we moved to an amazing machine that though hard to explain actually did what he said it would do, shrink the metal. It was similar to what ladies do then then want to put darts in garments to make them smaller in one area. He put the other end of the metal sheet in and out of that machine and ended up with a fairly rough hood for the vehicle. Then he said not to worry as it would all come out just fine. This is where the English wheel comes in. He just rolled this hood back and forth and bit by bit the wrinkles all smoothed out and it was a beautiful hood for the little race car. Such a fascinating thing to see happen before our very eyes! ! Sally said her dad had done similar work, only without the same machinery to work with. Another had a family member that had had some similar experience. There is a man in the Vancouver area that does the same type of work only with out all of the equipment and it takes a very long time to get the same outcome. We were all very impressed with him and his work. When asked if he had any sons to carry on this lost art, he said he had 2 sons, but neither one was interested in it. Too bad. I felt it was a real privilege to be able to see him take us through the whole process. And he was a very pleasant man and very willing to answer any questions, of which there were many. From there we followed the Roberts to their lovely home-away-from-home, at Scott Lake. By then the sun was out and we enjoyed seeing the yard which goes down to the creek that leaves the lake. Their lovely home accommodated us all, and Betty supplied ample food to go along with the pot luck we brought. We all fit around the table and had a good visit until Karen (Roberts daughter) and Betty replace the earlier food on a clean counter with 5 pies! What a feast and with many thanks to the Roberts we all went home with big smiles on our faces and very happy filled tummies! It was a most successful outing! Well, the 2003 Meet is fast approaching. We have some information we would like to get out to all those attending the event. First we would like to encourage all those attending to consider going to the Judging School it is FREE and should prove to be a wealth of information. The Kick-Off Social that immediately follows the school is also Free and at the same location. There will be a NO-HOST Bar and beverages may be purchased from a private bar station set up in our room. We will have light munchies on the tables.

Second, if you plan to take your car onto the Judging Field you must have a fire extinguisher in your vehicle.

Third, several people have expressed an interest in visiting the Chihuly Glass Museum in Tacoma, we are in the process of putting together an optional tour to this location. If you are interested please e-mail Sandy Bruyn at [email protected] and let her know you wish to attend. Cost is $ 10 for ten or more people. We are working on transportation now so let her know asap. Thank you. Last but certainly not least, I personally would like to thank each of you for publicizing and supporting our event. On the morning of the 4th of July, Lee and I had no idea who might join us for part of the day, or for that matter if anyone would come due to the late notice. So as we sat in our picnic shelter, enjoying the beauty of our domain, listening to the birds and appreciating the peaceful surroundings, we heard the purr of a Chevy and here came the Warrens in their 1963 convertible (below). We were delighted to have them come. As the day wore on we had the Brownells, the Scheins, Jim Martoza in his 1954 and Roberta and Adam in their 1966 Chevelle. Also joining us were Donna Onat and her friend Larry Smith in her 1954, and John Strampher in his 1955. Our son Marty and his wife, Cindy and his three children. Joshua, Anlya and Abigail also joined us for a bit. A grand total of 19 of us enjoyed the day. Since Donna's car died on the way down to the picnic area, we had a bit of trouble shooting and finally got it running. When they left they were on their way to another event. But shortly after a few minutes we got a call that the car died again. Lee and I and John Strampher were on our way to see if we could locate the trouble. After deciding that another trip home to get more tools and a set of points was needed, John took Donna to her place of commitment, Lee and I went home and he took the necessary tools and went back and fixed the problem and Larry went on his way to where Donna was. Alls well that ends well. Lee and I were delighted with the whole day. Carol Folsom

NEW MEMBERS STAN and GAIL WISSMAR (continued) Jona passed away in 1991 of Diabetes and I found myself single again. My friends at the Times thought that I shouldn't be a bachelor and soon through friends at the Everett Herald they soon had me fixed up with a young lady there who I married in 1993. Gail has two girls and has worked at the Everett Herald for 29 years. Cars and Trucks, especially Chevrolets were all new to Gail but in August of 1999 she surprised me with a 1966 Chevrolet C-10 Fleetside Long bed that she had found advertised in the Herald. It was a North Dakota truck which was in fair to middling condition. For the past over two years I've been slowly "fixing it up". I wouldn't exactly call myself a purist when it comes to restoring automobiles and I'm afraid this one is going to turn out to be a "Street Rod" at my old age. Last week it turned 85,000 original miles. I got a part time job over two years ago at QFC to make money for the truck so I am one of the oldest Box Boys around and at $8 something a hour building the truck comes awfully slow! Our target date is July of 2003 for finishing it so we can drive it to my 50th High School Class Reunion in Beaverton. By last count I've owned 20 or 21 various Chevrolets with a Ford, Buick and Subaru thrown in. *1947 Chevrolet Aero Sedan (302 cu. in. GMC truck engine) so I could keep up with the Ford V-8s and Mercuries. *1949 Chevrolet Convertible *1952 Chevrolet Deluxe 2-dr Sedan *1956 Chevrolet Bel-Air Hardtop (wish I still had it) *1961 Impala 2-door sedan (with a post-kinda rare) *1964 Chevelle Malibu 2 dr HT-4-speed *1966 Impala 2-door Hardtop. *1969 Nova S/S-396-4-Speed-"The car that I dreamed of for months about in Nam and the anticipation of buying one kept me going through some very tough times." *1979 Malibu Wagon-sold it after two flat cams and three fuel pumps! *1981 Citation X-11-a very underrated mini-muscle car *1985 Celebrity 4 door sedan *Special Note: I forgot about the 1973 Vega-yes I did my part to use a lot of IRAQ oil! That's a partial list of what I've owned. Chevrolets have been a big part of my life, "I Love'em". I am very partial to the "Stove-bolt 6" any size and therefore we are keeping the 250 6 in the pickup truck with dual exhausts of coarse! Although no power steering and three on the tree is kinda tiring! When I get started on Chevrolets I don't know when to stop. "Icelanders and their Automobiles" will be out in paperback in the near future...just kidding! Thanks for your time Stan and Gail Wissmar
