PHILADELPHIA MAGAZINE | 32 | THE 2017 REGIONAL GUIDE TO PRIVATE SCHOOLS

Children just don’t learn like they used to—and that’s not a bad thing. Schools, like the generations of children that pass through them, are evolving year after year. Tech is changing the form, education is getting entrepreneurial, global classrooms are growing and private schools are often on the forefront of these educational advancements. Many independent schools offer more enhanced academic programs that feature smaller class sizes, upgraded facilities, readily available resources and more.

As school curricula continue to evolve—some becoming more specialized and some reaching a wider student base—it’s important to know what to look for. Think about your child, their academic strengths and weaknesses and how they interact with the world around them. Think about their passions and how a specialized education

could help cultivate them. Whether you’re in search of intimate class settings, excellent educators, personalized learning, a supportive and strong community or all of the above, this guide will help you better understand the advancement of private education and how to find the best school tailored to your child’s individual needs.

Technology and the ClassroomTechnology has impacted the day-to-day life of both children and adults, and in today’s classroom, teachers use that to their advantage. We’ve seen the successful implementation of a variety of career-for-ward programs for students interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and art (STEAM). At Bishop Eustace Preparatory, a co-educational high school in Pennsauken, students recently started using a mobile app to track their service hours. Germantown Friends School, a co-educational K-12 school in Philadelphia, holds an annual Design Day where lower, middle and upper schoolers form teams to re-interpret a chosen idea or concept. Last year, the theme was “play” and students worked to build and trouble-shoot their own games. Social media and blogs can promote a collaborative work environment too, something young people should prepare for before entering today’s workforce. At The Baldwin School, an independent pre-K-12 school for girls located in Bryn Mawr, teachers use Twitter as a learning tool, having students pose as historical figures or literary subjects communicating with each other. In conjunction with other studies—entrepreneurship, for example—knowing how to build a blog or to promote your work on social media can help you reach a wider audience. Additionally, many schools utilize private digital learning sys-tems that provide reach-out resources for students in and outside of the classroom. Exton’s Church Farm School, a day and private boarding school for boys in grades 9

Choosing the Right SchoolPrivate schools appeal to parents because of their small class sizes, top notch teachers, supportive environments and strong communities. But since each school embodies a unique mission, one size does not fit all students. Parents interested in a private school education should start studying themselves—learning about a school’s philosophy, approach to teaching, extracurricular offerings and student body before they even start the application process. To prep you and your family for this educational path, we offer you an in-depth look at private education.

through 12, has provided each student with their own computers since the mid-’90s.“We use platforms like our Learning Management System (LMS) so connections are made via the web,” says Director of Ac-ademics, Chris Seeley. “Whether students are here on campus or on field trips or at home on vacation, they can connect with their teachers and we can personalize their learning… a teacher can tailor work to a particular group of students or an individ-ual based on the learning software that we use in our classes”

Teaching EntrepreneurshipToday, you can’t just be one thing—you need to be able to adapt to trends in tech-nology and business. Perhaps your child will wear a variety of hats at a startup, or, maybe they will decide to start a business of their own. To prepare students for an ever-evolving work environment, many private schools have added entrepreneur-ship to the curriculum. This can work in a variety of different ways, from business classes to in-school discussions with suc-cessful business owners. Some independent schools even encourage students to pitch and execute their own business ventures. The Agnes Irwin School, a pre-K to grade 12 all-girls school in Bryn Mawr, partners with the Franklin Institute for Sharing Solu-tions: Advancing Girls in STEM, an annual think tank conference. This year’s theme is “Partnering for Impact,” and will explore the important factors of building sustain-

able business relationships. Both keynote speeches will be delivered by women in leadership roles, at Bryn Mawr college and Dow Chemical Company, respectively. At AIM Academy in Conshohocken, a grades 1-12 college preparatory school for students with learning differences, students can add entrepreneurship to their class load as early as 6th grade.“Our founders really loved some of the research showing that a huge percentage of CEOs in this country have learning dif-ferences,” says Amanda Beeler, Director of Communications & Marketing at AIM. She adds that some students have been so suc-cessful in their business ventures, they’ve had to pay taxes on the products or services they’ve sold as high school students.

A Global EducationIt’s one thing to learn about different cul-tures through books, history or language class. It’s another thing to fully immerse

students in a different culture through global education programs, which a good amount of local private schools provide. At the Baldwin School, service work is incorporated into each trip planned for students, whether that’s in Rome, Paris or even Baltimore. “It helps them be more empathetic with others, to see that some of the people they are providing for are just like them and that the work they do can have an impact,” says Dr. Blankenship.

The Importance of Service LearningA very hands-on approach to education, service learning teaches students about the impact they can have on the environment and different communities. Community service provides young people with civic responsibility and a way to authentically contribute to their community. At St. Joe’s Preparatory School, an all-boys Catholic school for grades 9-12, 75 hours of service work is required to be completed during

each student’s 4-year term. Programs include summer-immersion trips, local fundraising and food drives. Angelo Milicia, Head of School at Bishop Eustace Preparatory, calls service a “staple” of the learning experience at the co-educational Catholic high school. Here, the service program evolves and matures as students move up in grade. Freshmen are required to perform their service within the school community, while Seniors spend at least one hour a week providing service outside of the school walls. This program includes the high demand Urban Challenge program based in Camden, NJ, where students will lend a hand with neighborhood cleanups and feeding the homeless at food shelters, among other activities.

Learning DifferencesThere is a high concentration of private schools in the Philadelphia area that cater to students with learning differences. Many schools offer assistance with ADHD,

How to apply Do your homework. Just like college, applying to private schools can be a multi-step process. Make a list of steps that are required as part of the submission process. Applications, rec-ommendations and interviews are standard practice, as well as entrance exams, parent essays and professional evaluations.

Explore the school. The only way to know if a school is right for your child is to immerse them in the school’s culture. Spending time with other students can help your child decide if they are a fit for the school community. Try hav-ing your child “shadow” another student to get a better idea of the daily routine, and visit campus tours and open houses.

Talk to other parents. Parents of private school students can be pretty involved with the school community. Talk with parents whose children attend the school to see if you and your partner enjoy the environment as well.

PHILADELPHIA MAGAZINE | 98 | THE 2017 REGIONAL GUIDE TO PRIVATE SCHOOLS

dyslexia, dyscalculia, auditory disorders and a wide array of other difficulties by providing research-based and multi-senso-ry teaching methods, college prep-focused

programs. Additionally, both students and parents can benefit from small classes and personal attention, with a lot of face time with teachers and staff. Dual enrollment is a college preparatory program that continues to grow in the private sector. The Woodlynde School, a co-educational college prep school in Strafford that serves children with learning differences grades K-12, offers dual enrollment partnerships with Cabrini University, Widener Universi-ty and Landmark College, to prepare their upper students (grades 9-12) for four-year programs. At AIM Academy, all Senior students are required to participate in dual-enrollment. Up until this year, that program was through Cabrini University. This year, the school is broadening the scope adding two new partnerships, one with Drexel University’s Close School for Entrepreneurship and one with the Univer-sity of the Arts, to provide students a wider opportunity to discover their next learning environment.

Considering Financial AidTuition can be tricky, but it doesn’t have to be a major roadblock for families considering private school. Many schools offer financial assistance, both need and merit-based (which will take into account a variety of talents in academia, the arts and athletics). Often, schools will offer payment plans and discounts for siblings. Research a plan that complements your family income, if applicable. Make note of deadlines—they’re generally different than admissions—and gather the financial paperwork that you will need to apply ahead of time. Many schools allow you to begin the financial aid process before your child has even been accepted.
