Welcome to The Public Zine Issue #1 For Whitstable Biennale 2014, Collaborative Research Group (CRG) created a social space within Kieren Reed’s ‘From the Ground up, (A) Social Building’, which also doubled as the Biennale’s HQ. CRG provided a context for interpreting the Biennale through participatory activity, talks, tours and other events. One of the ongoing projects in this space was The Public Zine Library. This library of over 170 donated zines, artist books and comics continues to grow and shall be open to public at CRG events as well as visiting fellow zine libraries around the UK and further! Visitors to the headquarters were invited to ‘zine’ with us! We asked visitors of all ages to share drawings, collages, photos, ideas and thoughts about The Biennale and the lovely town that hosted it! A zine is a mini-magazine, usually a handmade publication that can be based on anything you can imagine! There were loads of materials to experiment with so why not join in the zine-making fun? Every weekend we had workshops from bookbinding, collage, photocopying to 3d drawing with markers! Also available to experiment with were a set of 4 disposable cameras! We’ve a special Public Zine Library photography edition consisting of the photos that visitors took as they experienced the Biennale and the town.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all involved in the making ofThe Public Zine Library and this very publication. Thank you to our talented vistors! A big thank you to all the zine, comic and artist book makers for inspiring this publication. Without your generous donation of printed works we’d not have been such a success! We’d also like to thank our enthusiastic workshop hosts: Steven Alan (Wolfzines), Jo Murray (Parade Zines) and Jessica Maybury as well as the volunteers that helped us to run the workshops too.
Enjoy our very first issue!
