►ESD is a dynamic concept that aims to enable people of all ages and from all walks of life to pursue and benefit from a sustainable future by making the world a better place to live for the present as well as for the next generation.

►Education for sustainable future is

a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to learning that can redress the problems that threaten our common future by providing knowledge and values that gives us a deep understanding of global realities and their possible solutions .

� To ensure that policy, regulations, and operational frameworks support ESD

� To promote ESD through formal, non‐formal, and informal learning

� To equip educators with the competence to include ESD in their teaching

� To strengthen cooperation on ESD at all levels

� Ministry of National Education is committedto instill the values of sustainabledevelopment through education, startingfrom early childhood education to highereducation and life-long learning. Educationfor sustainable development is imbedded inthe curriculum as well as in extra curricularactivities to give knowledge, to instillvalues, and most importantly to makesustainable development as a habit and wayof life.

ESD in Regular Formal Schools is introduced through the following programmes:

� School Health Units � Boy Scouts � Environment-Friendly School program

and Adiwiyata Competition� Environment-Safe Program:Reduce- Recycle-Reuse-Replant

The idea of the program is to ensure healthy studentsand healthy school environments. Activities of theprogram include water , sanitation and theenvironement by equipping school with safe waterand sanitation facilities, skill-based health educationand school health and nutrition services providingstudents with healthy nutrition.The students shouldkeep the school clean. and little doctors. In littledoctors activities some students take turn beingappointed as doctors after undergoing some trainingson health cares.

It is extra-curricular programs attended bystudents from primary up to senior secondaryschools. It is intended to promote students’ self-discipline and solidarity as well as environmentawareness. Its main activities include out-boundand camping. Every member of Pramuka arerequired to work together to solve problemsfaced and make observations about theenvironment around the location.

� This program is one of outstanding ESD programs in Primary and Secondary Schools in Indonesia. The program is supported by collaboration between the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of National Education. The objective of the program is to create healthy environment schools which facilitate better a teaching- learning condition.

� Since the year of 2005, the two ministries have been holding Environment-Friendly School competition.

� It is called Adiwiyata compettion� The healthiest school receives Adiwiyata Award from the

President of the Republic of Indonesia

� This program has been implemented in about 5000 Vocational Schools. It is aimed to promote a comprehensive understanding on how to conserve environments. Students are taught the skill on processing oil-waste for those who study about automotive program, and food-waste for those who study cookery program.

� Associated School Project Network was established by UNESCO as a vehicle to promote UNESCO ideals in achieving World PEACE by doing an experimental project involving students, teachers and parents and training teachers and students as peace navigators.
