An environment suited to recovery
The Priory Hospital Romiley sits within a quiet
residential area, close to shops and colleges to enable
community links and access to recovery colleges.
It benefits from a bright and open environment that
captures all the comfort and familiarity needed to
promote recovery. The area is complemented by
calming trees and quiet surroundings whilst being
close to local shops and amenities.
We promote positive risk-taking, encouraging trips
into the local community where patients can gain
work experience by volunteering at local charity shops
or cafes. The hospital benefits from its own seven-
seater vehicle which enables days out to local parks,
including Etherow Country Park, and meals out at
local restaurants and public houses.
The hospital consists of:
• An occupational kitchen with onsite chef
• A comfortable and homely living area
• Large bathrooms and wet rooms
• A dining area for meal times
• A generous outdoor space
• Private group rooms
• 10 spacious, single occupancy bedrooms
We encourage our patients to personalise their
bedrooms by putting pictures on the wall and
bringing along their own personal belongings. We
base choice of bedrooms on age and presentation to
ensure management of risk.
Visiting times are flexible but we encourage this
to be outside of the therapy day. We also promote
protected meal times.
We aim to deliver consistently high quality treatment and support to patients and their families.Hospital Director at The Priory Hospital Romiley

Patient profile
We help women of working age with a variety of presenting
conditions including:
• Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
• Self-harm
• Treatment resistant psychosis
• Emotionally unstable personality disorder (borderline type)
• Personality disorder as a co-morbidity
• Patients may be informal or detained under the Mental Health Act
As the ward is a locked unit, it will only represent the least
restrictive option for patients whose risks to themselves and
vulnerabilities require that level of security and support and/or
where less restrictive settings have been unable to provide the
necessary treatment in a safe environment.
Discharge planning
From the point of admission the team works with the patient using an assertive recovery model. Patients are
supported and encouraged to set achievable goals to design their future life outside of hospital.
Ongoing assessment provides transitional goals which will be further developed following review.
Transitions are made in collaboration with the patient. All relevant staff, carers and community services are
involved in this process to ensure that a robust plan is in place to support the patient’s return to the community.
A discharge plan will address:
• Care co-ordination arrangements
• Relapse prevention
• Mental capacity assessment
• Support with housing
• Social inclusion work
• A physical health care plan
• Liaison with supporters
• Medication management
• Handover to community team
We would aim for our patients to be discharged to independent living, but where this is not achievable, our
patients would be supported in a transition to the least restrictive alternative.
