National Quality Standards (NQS) Network Meeting On Tuesday afternoon Ocean Road Primary School

hosted the “Scarp to Sea” National Quality Standards

Network meeting. The meeting focused on the

importance of building effective relationships

between students, educators and families. Mrs Finlay

and Ms Bennett shared the structures and processes

we have in place at Ocean Road to help ensure the

quality of our relationships and the importance we

place on them.

Staff Update At the end of Term 2, Ms Bartsoff was successful in

winning a permanent teaching position at the

Carnarvon School of the Air. As a result, Ms Meares

(Tuesday – Friday) and Ms Moore (Monday) will be

teaching in Room 7, Ms Beatty will be teaching in

Room 11 on Tuesdays, and Mrs Blundell will be

teaching in Room K on Wednesdays.

Mrs Titshall has taken her well-deserved Long

Service Leave this term with Mrs Axford replacing

her in Room 10. We are very fortunate to have been

able to fill all positions with teachers who are

experienced at Ocean Road and committed to doing

what is best for our students and community.

Finally, I would like to welcome all new students and

their families to our school. I am sure you will gain

great benefit from, and enjoy your time here.

Regards, Dean Finlay Principal

2020 CLASSROOM PLANNING

We have already commenced planning classes and teacher placements for 2020. To assist us, would you please let the school know ASAP if your child/ren will not be returning to Ocean Road next year. Please fill out the form on the back page and return to the office.

VISITING JAPANESE STUDENTS

Ten Japanese students are spending the week at our

school this week. To make the students feel

welcome, Chubb Sensei worked with our students to

create a welcome board last week, the welcome

board had origami dolphins, crabs, whales, birds,

fish, boats, love hearts and a collage decoration of

each of the visiting students’ names. The visiting

students will be having some English lessons as well

as spending time with their buddy in the classroom. A

massive thank you to our amazing families who have

volunteered to host the Japanese students.

A little bit of notice that

Book Week Dress up day will

be on Friday 23 August. The

Book Week theme for 2018

is ‘Find your Treasure’.

There are a number of commonly asked questions

from our school community about PBS.

Through newsletters and facebook, one of these

frequently asked questions will be posted along with

the answer from our PBS Team.

What are our school values?

Kindness is the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate. Resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity.

Responsibility means you are accountable for your choices, actions, and the resulting consequences. Respect is treating ourselves, each other and the environment with dignity, honour and consideration.

NUT AWARE SCHOOL

Ocean Road Primary is a Nut Aware School. We have a number of students with nut allergies so please do not send foods containing nuts to school. Thank you for your support.

P & C NEWS

FATHERS’ DAY STALL

Hazel and her fundraising team are busy putting

together amazing gifts and a raffle for our Fathers’

Day Stall. This year the stall will be held on 28th and

30th August. Hazel is currently looking for donations

for the raffle and stall as well as plastic bags or gift

bags you may have at home and wish to recycle.

Please drop them at the front office for Hazel to

collect.

CANTEEN

Our canteen has had an upgrade over the holidays

with a new oven and dishwasher. The old oven has

been replaced with a commercial oven, making

Jodie’s cooking more enjoyable. We were also

fortunate enough to be able to install a dishwasher

with a grant organised by our school office. Thank

you to everyone that has made this possible.

BUNNINGS SAUSAGE SIZZLE

On the 7th July we ran our first Year 6 camp

fundraiser at Bunnings. The volunteering was

fantastic and with this we were able to donate a

further $1000 dollars towards the camp cost.

Thank you to our amazing helpers Sarah Bacon,

Kara Stockley, Renae Gibbons, Peter and Jamie

Bailey, Rachel Lekias, Belinda Brown, Melissa

Turnor, Meagan and Adam Dorotich and also our

wonderful teachers Qing Zhu, Cath Laird and also a

huge thank you to Leanne Northey for your

organisational skills, this day wouldn't have

happened without you. I would also like to thank all

the P&C members for all their help too, again without

you all this day wouldn't have happened. All funds

from the day are going to help with the increasing

cost of the Year 6 camp.

VOLUNTEERS

Do you have a spare hour or two?

Are you interested in helping out at the school either

in fundraising or at the school canteen?

If you answered yes, we would love to hear from you.

FEEDBACK

Your feedback is valuable and needed as we are

always looking to improve how we operate our day to

day activities. I would like to hear from parents,

friends, nannas, granddads, anyone. Everything that

we do is to benefit the students, the more help we

get from you, our families results in a better funded

school for your children. If you could email

or leave your feedback at [email protected]

the front office and I will collect and take to the

committee.

Thank you and look forward to hearing from you

soon.

Be You

The Be You framework provides our school with resources and strategies in supporting students’ wellbeing and mental health. The

Be You framework is part of the Australian Governments National Initiative and encompasses experts across the country in mental

health and education.

At Ocean Road our goal is to assist students in learning how to manage their emotions, develop a positive self-image and learn

appropriate behaviours. We do this through explicit instruction following our PATHS programs and our PBS Whole School Values

lessons. Below is an excerpt from Be You, which gives a valuable overview of the concept of self-management.

Self-Management

Helping children and young people manage their emotions is important for fostering positive mental health and wellbeing.

Self-management is learning about your own feelings and emotions, understanding how and why they happen, recognising them

(and those of others), and developing effective ways of managing them.

Emotions include several components:

physical responses (for example, heart rate, breathing and hormone levels)

feelings

thoughts and judgements associated with feelings

action signals (for example, a desire to approach, escape or fight).

Learning to self-management

This is a critical way that a child or young person learns to cope with the world. When children and young people learn to self-

manage their emotions, they feel more confident, capable and in control. They have stronger relationships, are more able to pay

attention, learn new things and can cope better with the normal stresses and disappointments of daily life. Developing skills for

self-managing a range of emotions is so important for children and young people’s emotional wellbeing.
