Deep in the dark dungeons of a castle overlooking the sea slept a lonely thief
imprisoned within the confines of a jail cell. No guards watched over the thief for they feared that part of the dungeon. From the thief ’s prison grew foliage and vegetation that should not have grown in the darkness underground. The guards believed the thief to be a sorcerer and attempted to issue an execution at one point. But attempts to remove the thief from the prison would result in the growth of poisonous plants that made the guards fall into a frenzy. And an attempt to burn the prison only resulted in extinguished flames when it contacted the growth. So for many years, the thief was left alone in the prison overgrowing with foliage.
One night, the king in the castle overlooking
the sea had a dream, and when he woke, he felt compelled to visit this strange prisoner. His courtiers protested for his safety and voiced their concerns, but the king was stubborn and paid no heed to their warnings.
As the king descended into the dungeons beneath the castle, he saw the foliage and vegetation growing peculiarly in the tunnels that never saw the sun. Unlike the accounts of his guards, he encountered no poisonous plants and did not fall into a frenzy upon contact with them. In fact, the foliage seemed to part for him as he neared the bars of the prisoner’s jail cell.
When he saw the prisoner, the thief was lounging on a moss-covered bed in the cell, back towards him. The king coughed into his hand to call the thief ’s attention.

Created at the dawn of the digital age, Hoefler
Text is a family of typefaces constructed in the
fashion of classical typography. Its influences
include Janson Text, Garamond, and Sabon.
Jonathan Hoefler created the typeface in 1991
to showcase advanced type technologies and to
show the potential of digital type to be not only
be just as good as traditional ones, but perhaps
be better than anything that had come before.
In this sense, Hoefler Text was a forerunner in
the quest for fine typography in the digital age.
Following the Adobe Originals program’s lead
of introducing old-style figures and small caps,
Hoefler Text also brought back the traditions of
extended ligature sets, engraved capitals, and the
arabesques of the renaissance. It even went as
far as creating its own traditions of case-specific
punctuation, italic small caps, and foreign symbols
and accents. Hoefler Text gained the attention
of Apple developers, and they commissioned
for an expansion of the fonts. The typeface was
licensed for inclusion in System 7 on the Macintosh
operating system and has been included in
every subsequent version since System 7.5.
Since then, Hoefler Text’s “advanced
features” have become a standard for digital
typography, with small caps and old-style
figures included in the best text faces from
all of the world’s great type foundries.

the thief asked in a sleep-laden voice, “to have your grace descend from his castle to see a lowly thief like me?”
The king replied, “The guards fear you and call you a sorcerer. They say we must kill you or you will curse this castle with your dark magic,” he said gesturing to the abundant plant growth overcrowding the cell.
“Surely if I wanted to destroy this castle then I’d have done so already.” The thief did not move from her place.
“Then why have you not done so?” “I wonder,” she breathed so soft the king had
to strain his ears to hear. “You shouldn’t be here, your grace.”
The king grew impatient. “As your sovereign
ruler, you must do as I say,” he demanded in a voice befitting his position.
The thief remained unperturbed, “And what does your grace need of a lowly thief imprisoned in the dungeons of his castle?”
This gave the king pause. He did not know exactly what compelled him to see the thief besides the strange dream. “You— you will answer my questions!”
There was a moment before he heard an audible sigh and a rustle within the cell. “I’ll do as my king commands.”
“What are those markings on your back?” He could have asked why the plants grew in
the dark dungeon, or why they had not tried to kill him when he approached. Instead, he had asked the question that sparked his curiosity when he saw how beautiful the thief was.

She draped a sheet over herself and sat before the king, the iron bars the only separation between them. “Days are long and dull down here. I sing songs so the diwata will play on my skin and leave marks of the outside world. It’s painful to let them play without the sun, but there’s not much I can do of that matter. They are also the ones responsible for this.” The thief gestured to the foliage.
“They say lotus flowers mean an estranged love," the king recalled.
“I wonder,” the thief said again. “Are you far from the one you love?”

“Why are you down here?” The king asked for his second question.
“You know the answer to that, your grace. You sentenced my imprisonment.” As she spoke, white petals from the flowering bush beside her began to fall.
“They found you with a dagger in my room as I slept. You tried to kill me.”
“If you know, then why do you ask?”The king shook his head, confused. “They
found the real culprits later, mercenaries from the northern country. You were merely a hired
decoy whose job was to distract us by stealing the crown jewels while they poisoned the court.”
The thief said nothing as the king attempted to decipher his memories.
“Why did you try to kill me?” The king met the thief ’s eyes. Hers were the color of amber, a mark of the forest people.
“I did not try to kill you, your grace.”“Then what were you doing in my room with
a dagger?” he asked, frustration building because the thief spoke in circles.
“I was trying to save you.”

L ong ago, in a country by the sea, the kingdom held a weeklong celebration
leading up to the crown prince’s coronation. It was a grand ball with feasting and dancing every night. Known to all was the king and queen’s intention to find the prince a bride. But for all his princely duties, he would politely turn down every fair maiden who requested a dance.
That was until the strangest person appeared before him. In an ensemble of white and red, a girl with long limbs, a graceful stride, and an intricately carved fox mask bowed low before the prince. Entranced, the prince only watched as the girl lifted her head and smiled beneath a fox-mask’s painted eyes.
“Sweet prince, will you dance with me?” the girl asked in a clear voice. The court expected the prince to reject her.
“No,” he refused. But unexpectedly, to save the girl’s feelings, he added, “I don’t know how.”
The girl behind the fox-mask bowed again, “That’s alright. I’ll teach you.”
The prince shook his head to refuse a second time. “That is unnecessary.”
But the girl persisted for she was determined to dance with the prince. “What’s there to lose? We should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least once,” she recited from a well-known novel.
The prince hesitated. Then, slowly, rose from his seat and offered his hand. “Very well, I will dance with you.” The girl smiled, and the court gasped in both shock and relief. Shock because they did not know the strange girl, and relief because the prince had taken interest in someone. They had worried he wasn’t interested in girls.

As they took position on the floor, all the guests stopped dancing to watch the formerly disinterested prince dance with the mysterious girl. The girl taught the prince easily, and they treaded lightly across the marble tiles, stepping well in tune with the music.
The second night, the girl came again, this time in a gown of blue and a necklace that the prince thought familiar. Again she asked the prince for a dance, and again, he agreed. This time more confident than the last, they swept across the dance floor until the party ended.
The third night, the girl in the fox-mask wore deep violet, and from her ears hung jewels the prince thought becoming of the girl, but also strangely familiar. When she asked again for a dance, the prince readily took her hand.

The fourth night, the prince began to notice a pattern. The girl’s dress was a rich color of jade, and on her wrists twinkled bangles of precious metals he knew to have seen before. Yet, he remained silent, and accepted again when she asked for a dance.
The fifth night, the court pestered him before the girl arrived to the ball. They wanted to know who the strange girl was for she belonged to none of the noble families, and also implored him to dance with their daughters as well. So when the girl in the fox-mask arrived in a trailing gown of pale yellow and a gold circlet, he was waltzing with someone else.
They did not dance that night.

On the seventh night, the girl in the fox mask appeared once more in an ensemble of white and red. This time, the prince rose before she spoke.

The prince plucked a violet flower from one of the vases decorating the terrace and took something out of his pocket. He placed them both in the girl’s hand. “You forgot the ring hidden behind the stone vault.”

Instead of attending the sixth night of the coronation ball, the thief met with the
mercenaries from the northern country. The thief had been jealous when the prince
danced with the highborn daughters and realized that she had fallen in love with him. The thief wanted no more part in the prince's assassination.
However, the damage was done. Throughout the extravagant feasting, the women had laced the prince’s food with a fine black powder crushed from the seeds of a scarlet flower from across the sea. After the sixth night, the prince had already consumed enough poison to stop his heart.
The thief moved quickly, knowing she did not have time. She ran for the forest to find a sorcerer who could save the prince’s life. There was no definite path to find the him, but she was a child of the forest and raised in the magic of the old world. All she had to do was run deeper and deeper into the forest until it led her to him.
There were no clouds in the sky, and only a sliver of a moon provided light for the thief to see. Finally, the forest led her to the foot of an old tree with a door of black stone tangled in its roots. The door opened when she approached and closed when she passed through.

A voice deep and cracked spoke in the language of the forest and the old world.
“Mangkukulam,” the thief addressed the sorcerer, bowing low. “Please, I need to save the prince.”
The mangkukulam appeared, sitting at the center of the room before a crackling fire. “Look at me, anak,” he commanded.
Slowly, the thief raised her head to see the sorcerer. He appeared to be an old man hunched over with age. His long gray hair tangled beneath a layer dust, and the shadows on his skin moved continuously in a dappled pattern of sunlight filtering through leaves. But the most striking of his appearance were dark eyes that saw nothing, and within those dark eyes shone constellations that twinkled when he spoke.
“Welcome, anak. What brings you to my hom?”

Hoefler Text was designed to show off the
Mac’s ability to handle complex typography
due to advanced type technologies. Due
to its rich set of characters and variants
of ligatures, small capitals, initial and
terminal swashes, archaic long s, old style
figures, and ornaments, the typeface is
wonderfully useful and versatile. Therefore,
it is able to be used casually or to cater
to any variety of a designer's needs.

“What you ask for is an expensive request,” the mangkukulam croaked. “My price will be high. Even so, are you willing to pay it?”
“Yes,” the thief answered simply.“Anak,” child, he called her. “You are of the forest
so I will grant your request, but my price will be high.”“I will pay the price.”The stars in the sorcerer’s eyes twinkled softly.
“I ask again. Will you pay the price of this request?”“Yes.”At the third confirmation, the mangkukulam
lifted his hands over the fire. “I shall grant you the power to save your prince,” he chanted in the language of the forest. “The price will be your voice and his memories. You will sing for the diwata to play on your skin and eat the color underneath, and the prince will neither know nor remember you.”
The thief lowered her head.

The mangkukulam paused. “There is one way he may regain his memories,” he said in a hoarse whisper. The sorcerer told the thief what had to be done if she wanted the prince to remember her.
She laughed until there were tears in her eyes and laughed until she could not laugh anymore.
“Mangkukulam,” she said between gasps, “that’s too cruel.”
The thief blinked and stood once again in front of the old tree. The door of black stone was nowhere to be found.
In the thief ’s hand was a gunong, a dagger. “Stab his heart with this, and he will live,” the sorcerer’s voice told her.

On the seventh night, after pretending to throw herself into the sea, the thief
snuck back into the castle to return what she had stolen and to find the prince.
She found him asleep in his chambers, peaceful and unaware of the poison slowly creeping into his heart. The thief watched the prince’s chest rise and fall as she unsheathed the gunong. Then, poising the it over the prince’s heart, the thief plunged the dagger into his heart.
There was no blood. There was no mark. Even the prince’s clothes remained unscathed. But the gunong’s blade turned black as she removed it from the prince’s chest, and the thief knew it had taken the poison out of his body.
In the moment that she had removed the blade completely, the door of the prince’s
chambers burst open and guards marched in to surround the thief.
“Seize her!” the captain commanded. The dagger fell from the thief 's hands and
rang against the tiled floor. The commotion woke the prince. “What is
happening?” he asked, his voice heavy with sleep. “My prince, this girl tried to kill you. See the
dagger beside your bed.” The prince looked at the dagger with the
blackened blade and then to the thief. “Who are you?”
“My prince, this is the girl you have danced with these past few nights–”
The prince interrupted, “I did not ask you, Captain.” He turned to the thief and asked again,
“Who are you?”

“Now you’re king,” the thief finished, “and I’ve been locked down here for
seven years.”The king said nothing. He had no words.
Surely the thief was lying. Without saying goodbye, he stood up and left the thief in the cell overgrown with vegetation.
After a week of reflection, the king returned. “How do I regain my memories?”
The thief looked at him, her amber eyes dull. “You must call me by name.”
“That is all?” the king asked incredulous. “If so, why did you not request an audience with me? Even in a court of trial I would have needed to say your name at least once.”
The thief ’s laugh echoed mirthless in the confines of her prison. “Your grace,” she said hoarsely, “I have no name.”
“What?”“Children of the forest are those abandoned
and left to the magic of the old world,” the thief explained. “We’re all but raised wolves. When we’re old enough to fend for ourselves, we must try to live in your new world with its petty rules and greedy people. It’s simply easier to live as an anonymous criminal. I overheard the plan to kill you and offered my services as a decoy, thinking I’d rob you on top of my pay.” The thief languished in the moss-covered bed. “I didn’t think I’d fall for a silly prince.”
The king ignored the last statement. “Surely, you have been called by a name before.”
The thief turned to the king again. “I’ve been called a thief, a liar, a whore, a wench, and many others of a similar variety. Take your pick.”

While the king turned quiet, the vegetation within the dark prison grew small blue flowers shaped like stars. An idea dawned on the king.
For a brief moment, the air stilled. The thief laughed again. “Your grace must be ill if you believe a thief can be your queen.”
“Am I?” the king challenged. “For seven years after the coronation, I have taken no wife and have had no interest in marrying. Why then, would I say something so absurd to a criminal I cannot even remember?”
“en I i ca you my Queen.”

The thief blinked. She thought her eyes were playing tricks on her. Slowly, the vegetation in the cell receded, and the lush foliage that covered the walls seemed to grow in reverse.
“Queen,” the king repeated, this time unlocking the cell. The retreating vegetation gathered at his feet and then shattered into countless fragments of star-like lights.
By calling her Queen, the king had given the thief a name he could call her by, and so the spell that had kept his memories hidden was broken.
The thief could only laugh. “My king,” she said for the first time. “You are indeed a fool.” Though the queen’s smile held no trace of sadness when she took his hand.
