If you are not recieving our emails please contact [email protected]. The Nest Collective Summer GO! Project For years, the Schultz family has been drawn to service in our community. Over time, they became increasingly aware of the broad need for furniture and household goods among vulnerable populations across Fairfax County. They learned that while there are organizations in our area that provide 'furniture bank' services, there was still an urgent and unmet need. In the spring of 2018, the Schultz family started The Nest Collective, and made it their mission to provide the comforts of home for our vulnerable neighbors. (Continues on page 4) When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. What tools does the Holy Spirit use to sculpt us into the

form of Jesus Christ?

ESLESL completed the year with about 60 students learning English, preparing for US citizenship, and coming together to talk about their faith and learn about the Christian faith. On the last day they had a wonderful potluck celebration including some line dancing!

Our Newest Specific Ministry Pastor (SMP) Candidate: John DurkinI am excited and humbled to announce that I have been accepted to the SMP program through Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. I have received terrific support from our pastors and staff, BOSL, Love in Action, and our beloved District President. This program is a four-year distance learning program leading to ordination as an LCMS pastor. I may begin in August, or January depending on enrollment numbers. Please keep me and my family in your prayers as we go on this new journey together. It is a privilege to serve the congregation at Prince of Peace. Blessings,John Durkin

Considering my CallsOn Friday afternoon, 24 May, the Circuit Visitor from Montana’s Flathead Valley called me with the news that I’d been called by the members of St. Peter’s Lutheran in Whitefish, Montana, to be their pastor. I’d worshipped there several times while visiting my in-laws, but had no idea that I was being considered to fill their pastoral vacancy. The previous pastor retired late last year.So now I have to decide between two calls: The one I have from Prince of Peace and the one I just got from St. Peter’s.Glenda and I will spend most of June considering these two calls. The thought of pulling up stakes after 36 years in Springfield is daunting—especially since we’re both quite happy here. But we’ve always said that we’d like to end up out West eventually, where we both grew up and where several of our children (and grandchildren!) live. And I’ve always thought that, after all these years living on the East Coast so I could work in foreign affairs, I ought to take Glenda back to her mountains when I finished my work for the government. Most of all, though, we want to do what God’s calling us to do. Figuring out what that is will be the focus of our prayers and conversations now. We hope to have your prayers and hear your thoughts too in the next few weeks.

The Nest Collective Summer GO! Project(Continued from page 1) They started by collecting furniture and household goods donated by friends and neighbors and storing them in their garage. Over a few months they grew into 4 storage units and this spring they moved into a warehouse space in Springfield. By gathering some of the excess in our communities, we have been able to provide free furniture and household items to over 35 individuals and families in the past year. The Nest Collective is a local 501(3)c nonprofit organization. They will take gently used household goods and furniture and provide them to those in need in our community. We work with other nonprofit organizations, case managed programs, social workers and clergy to identify our clients. Our clients include families and individuals who are overcoming homelessness, escaping domestic violence or recovering from crisis or disaster. Our mission is to give every client the comforts of home! For the summer GO! Project POP will focus on The Nest Collective to raise awareness within our congregation about The Nest Collective and it's mission; to offer opportunities for members of the congregation to get involved with The Nest Collective at many different levels. The Nest Collective's immediate needs are:• Pickup/delivery helpers - Individuals or small groups can volunteer• Donations of our most needed household items: Gently used or new pots and pans, twin comforters and silverware. New items can be purchased from our Amazon wish list located on the website under "Donate". These needs change all the time so for a current list of needs visit their website at www.nestcollective.org,• Monetary donations. • General Volunteers - volunteers to help with sorting and cleaning donations etc. Please contact Joen Schultz, [email protected], (703) 232-6453 or [email protected]

POP Accepts Outreach Award for $1,700!At the Spring Church Worker’s Conference, Pastor Tim accepted a $1700 grant from the Mid-Atlantic Lutherans in Mission. The monies will be used to expand POP’s influence in our neighborhood by strategically placing two “tables of peace” on our property line between POP and Giant. The tables will be used by folks from POP, workers of neighborhood businesses, and those

who walk by and visit our campus; it will be a place to rest, connect, take work breaks, and eat outside. God is on the move in the neighborhood!

iNeighborhoodIt's Summer!!! Although officially Summer starts on June 21st; in our American culture it is now Summertime. This means time outside, time at the pool, time at Nationals stadium...Many of us have already planned our Summer vacations, but have you thought about what you'll do when you're at home this Summer? Will you hide inside with the air conditioning? Perhaps do something with your neighbors? Check out what the South Eastern District is doing for Spring Training. Join Jesus, and jump into the mission field this Summer! http://se.lcms.org/sermon/a-view-from-the-pitchers-mound/

Holy ComfortersThe 180 quilts that were on display recently were put together for Lutheran World Relief (LWR) by the Holy Comforters. They were taken up to the New Windsor, MD collection point where they are baled and stacked until a notification is received from LWR that there is a need in disasters areas of the world. The 31 baby quilts in the hallway near room 27 will be given to ASSIST Pregnancy Center and ECHO who will include them in layettes. We are so blessed, receiving donations of supplies from so many kind people through the year. A great big "Thank You" to all. We will resume our quilt making in January. Please consider joining us. Student Ministry

Small Group HighlightIntergenerational bible studies are becoming "a thing" in our church congregation. Adults and youth coming together to learn and grow in the Word have shown our church community that mixing generations is advantageous in seeking a new perspective. Taking it a step further, adults leading students in a Bible study has been more of a rarity; that is up until POP Students launched the campaign for small groups at the beginning of the year. Jennifer Gross, a mother of an elementary school daughter and high school daughter, saw the opportunity to bridge the gap within the student ministry. Gross welcomed, on average, six teenage women into her home on Sunday afternoons. Offering snacks, great conversation, and a study that would have the young women looking for the lovely in their everyday life amidst the chaos that sometimes leaves them overwhelmed. When asked how leading this small group has impacted her faith, Gross answered, “I have learned that teenagers are just as serious with their faith as adults. I think we do not give kids enough credit … they are just as interested.” What a wonderful testimony to close out our small group spotlight series! If you are interested in leading a student small group please email [email protected]
