The Prince and the Pauper This is the first historical novel Twain. Set in 1547, tells the story of two identical physical appearance: Tom Canty, a pauper who lives with his cruel father in Offal Court, London, and Prince Edward, son of Henry VIII of England. Children exchange their roles: Tom Canty takes the place of Edward in the palace and Edward takes the place of Tom at home. Nobody believes Eduardo when he says that he is not Tom, but the true prince. Tom's father abused him and Prince escapes with the help of a disgraced nobleman, Miles Hendon, but is lost in a crowd of people who were protesting the king. In the palace nobody believes Tom to say that he is not really Edward and think the prince has gone mad. Meanwhile Henry VIII dies and therefore make preparations for the coronation. After a series of adventures, Edward manages to change places with Tom, just as he was about to be crowned. Nobles refuse to believe that a child who appears to them as a pauper is the true king, until describes the royal seal them he had hidden before leaving the palace and that Tom had taken for a open nuts. Miles is rewarded with the title of Duke and the ordinary permission to sit in the presence of the king, reserved only for the royal family. Tom received as a thank you for supporting the new throne claim the title "King Protected." El príncipe y el mendigo Es la primera novela histórica de Twain. Ambientada en 1547, cuenta la historia de dos niños de apariencia física idéntica: Tom Canty, un mendigo que vive con su padre cruel en Offal Court, Londres, y el príncipe Eduardo, hijo de Enrique VIII de Inglaterra. Los niños intercambian sus roles: Tom Canty toma el lugar de Eduardo en el palacio y Eduardo toma el lugar de Tom en su casa. Nadie cree a Eduardo cuando dice que él no es Tom, sino el verdadero príncipe. El padre de Tom lo maltrata y el príncipe escapa con ayuda de un noble caído en desgracia, Miles Hendon, pero se pierde entre una multitud de gente que estaba protestando por el rey. En el palacio nadie cree a Tom al decir que él no es realmente Eduardo y piensan que el príncipe se ha vuelto loco. Mientras tanto Enrique VIII fallece y por consiguiente se hacen los preparativos para la coronación.

Tom est ansioso por quedarse en el trono pero los nobles se niegan a creer que el nio que se les aparece como un mendigo es el verdadero rey, hasta que les describe el sello real que haba escondido antes de salir del palacio y que Tom haba tomado por un abre nueces. Miles es recompensado con el ttulo de duque y con el ordinario permiso de sentarse en presencia del rey, reservado slo a la familia real. Tom recibe como agradecimiento por apoyar la reclamacin del nuevo trono el ttulo de Protegido del Rey.
