Jacksboro has wrapped up Homecoming 2014. The town really outdoes itself with all of the festivities. I’ve never seen anything like it.
The week was kicked off with the bonfi re Monday night. Ryan Neufeld, for-
mer Dallas Cowboy, spoke of his trials, travels and
tr ibulat ions with trying to make several pro football teams before fi nally landing with the Buf-falo Bills.
He credited prayer and his Christian faith with helping to see him through many diffi culties includ-ing raising an autistic son. He encouraged Jacksboro athletes and students to never give up and always seek strength in God.
The parade was huge with 54 entries and the theme of “Pride and Prom-ise.” The junior class took top honors for its fl oat.
Following the parade, the 28 queen and princess nominees took part in the coronation. The young la-dies looked so grown up in their sparkley dresses and heels.
Freshman princess went to Alondra Banuelos; sophomore princess was
Marian Vela and Alexis Easley was named juniorprincess.
The fi ve fi nalists for Homecoming Queen were Kaitlin Bailey, Justice Drennan, Olivia Roberts,Shalin Simmons and Cay-ley Strickland.
Following the corona-tion was the pep rally. JHS cheerleaders wore uni-forms from years past andinvited former cheerlead-ers onto the court to joinin performing, “Two Bits.”
Coach Brian Davenportgave a pep talk to the foot-ball team and encouragedthem to get their rocks ready because that night, they’d slay Goliath.
Before the game, the ju-nior class hosted its bar-becue dinner with hun-dreds in attendance.
During the pre-gameceremony, Justice Dren-nan was crowned Home-coming Queen. Eddy andAlice Williams, class of 1964, were selected as Coming Home King andQueen.
The Ex-Students Associa-tion also honored two new

Eddy and Alice (Leath-erwood) Williams being named as Coming Home King and Queen Friday night continued a family tradition.
Alice said in a Sunday in-terview that she is not the fi rst Leatherwood to be given the honor, with her brother Paul Leatherwood being named king in 2013 and her sister Ann given the honors a few years back.
“We found out about it when they announced us (Friday) afternoon and we were just tickled,” Alice said. “It’s a big honor.”
The Williams graduated from JHS in 1964 and have been a couple a long time before that, Alice saying the couple grew up to-gether and have been boy-friend and girlfriend since
fi fth grade.“During church youth
group, we saw The Ten Commandments when it came out and he held my hand,” Alice said. “It was very sweet.”
The couple got married after Alice’s sophomore year at Sam Houston State University. She then trans-ferred to Texas A&M.
The couple has been busy since graduation,
Eddy started out running a number of agriculture businesses in Kansas City, Iowa and Southern Cali-fornia along with partner-ing with his father to run a ranch out in West Texas and Alice being a teaching assistant and substitute teacher.
The couple moved to Illi-nois in 1978 and settled in the town of Wheaton, out-side of Chicago. The two
started a family and raisedfour daughters. Eddyfound a job with Morton Salt where he stayed for27 years before retiring in2012. Alice retired in 2010and the couple has spentmuch of their retirementenjoying their four grand-children.
“We come back herethree or four times a year to visit friends here,” Alicesaid. “We also travel in-ternationally about oncea year and head to visit those grandchildren as of-ten as we can.”
As they were in Jacks-boro, the couple are very active in their church,Eddy taking part in the Men’s Chorus at theirchurch. Eddy also enjoysgolfi ng and the weeklyMonday night meetingsin his “pool hall” in theirbasement.
The couple are also bigfootball fans and enjoywatching college and pro games when at home.

The Jacksboro High School Ex-Students Asso-ciation inducted two mem-bers to its hall of fame during the pre-game cere-mony at the Homecoming game.
To be inducted in the hall of fame, a JHS alumnus must receive state or na-tional recognition for their endeavors.
This year’s inductees were Joe Paul Nichols and John Loftin Simpson.
Joe Paul Nichols, a 1960 graduate of Jacksboro High School, started win-ning awards while still at JHS. He was always a hard worker in school and well–liked by all, win-ning Prince Charming, Mr. FTA, Mr. FHA, and Most Courteous Boy of JHS his senior year. In 1957, at the age of 16, his dad, who had taught him to play the guitar when he was 9, took him to Fort Worth to audition for a job perform-ing on the Cowtown Hoe-down. He played there for three years and began a career in traditional coun-try, western swing and country gospel music that spanned over 50 years.
During his music career, he recorded more than 300 songs, cut 25 albums, and received dozens of major awards in Texas, the United States, and in-ternationally including the International Country Gospel Music Associa-tion Lifetime Achievement Award, several song and album of the year awards, Entertainer of the Year both on state and national levels, and two gospel Hall of Fame awards, just to name a few. Governor Rick Perry declared Septem-ber 26, 2010 as Joe Paul Nichols Day in the state of Texas.
While maintaining this very active musical ca-reer, Joe Paul also worked for TxDOT for 34 years, with fellow musician Terry
Beene started the Nichols and Beene Bus Tours to Nashville, Branson, and other points throughout the Southwest, served as Jack County Commission-er for 10 years, and with lifelong sweetheart and wife, Carolyn Martin Nich-ols raised their two chil-dren Joe Paul Nichols, Jr. and Jennifer Gasca. They have six granddaughters and one grandson.
In September of 2007, Joe Paul was diagnosed with ALS and eventually forced to give up his live perfor-mances. A short four years later, he lost his battle with this crippling disease, but his music continued to climb the charts. Today, his music lives on in all 50 states in the US and at last count, 18 other countries.
Jacksboro High School’s outstanding senior boy and valedictorian of the class of 1963, John Loftin Simpson received his B.A. degree in Political Science with honors from the Uni-versity of Texas at Aus-tin in 1967. There he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, a national honor society.
After serving in the Unit-ed States Navy as an of-fi cer during the Vietnam War, he entered the Uni-versity of Texas School of Law where he taught le-gal research and writing to fi rst-year law students during his third year and graduated in 1973 with a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree. He was elected to the Order of the Coif, a national honor society for law graduates.
After clerking for a fed-eral judge in Austin, he was hired by Chief Coun-sel of the Internal Rev-enue Service and began working in the national of-fi ce in Washington D.C. In 1979 he transferred to the Oklahoma City offi ce and spent the remainder of his career there. During this career he was considered
an expert in federal tax collection law and bank-ruptcy law and taught at four national Chief Coun-sel training schools for attorneys. He also taught bankruptcy at seminars sponsored by the Oklaho-ma State Bar Association.
While in Oklahoma, he re-ceived numerous regional performance awards and a national award, the Fayette Taylor Memorial Award, for being the attorney of the year in the area of federal tax collection. Upon retire-ment in 2006, the Secretary
of the Treasury honoredhim with the Albert Galla-tin Award for distinguishedservice, the highest awardthat can be given to a civil-ian employee. In additionto his legal career, he has written and published twonovels.
