1 THE PRESIDENT’S REPORT Good afternoon fellow Goodyear Ski Club members. Despite being in the dog days of summer, it has been an exciting few weeks as we have completed our upcoming trip schedule. We owe thanks to the entire Trip Committee staff, as they have given us two great options for this winter (Snowmass and Keystone). The 2013 day/weekend trips are currently being formulated, and I’m sure they will be great as well. As a reminder, this month has the Annual Swap Shop (Sept 27-30 th ) at Buckeye Sports Center. We still need volunteers to help out during any and all time slots . Please let me know via e- mail or phone if you can help out. Again, the swap is a critical event for not only the Club, but for local charities as well. The Beacon Journal has agreed to help us again this year by running an ad, so we owe them our gratitude. Additionally, if any Club members have children/grandchildren/etc in school, please ask if there is a Ski Club . I would greatly appreciate the contact individual for these ski clubs, as it would make distributing the flyers somewhat easier. Together, I’m sure we will make this year’s Swap Shop a great success. Please see the Swap Shop flyer on page 3 for the specifics of dates/times/etc. I will have a signup sheet at the monthly September Business Meetings also. Moving on to other topics, we have a few remaining events that hopefully some of you can attend before the end of September. For those of you who are fans of Led Zeppelin, I urge you not to miss the Lock 3 show on August 31 st . The band Zoso will perform, and I can promise you won’t be disappointed. Paula and Tim Lavey will be hosting this event - join us if you can. We also have an upcoming MetroPark hike on September 8 th , along with the Annual Road Rally on September 22 nd . Please see VP Teresa’s article on page 2 for more information. As always, have a safe and happy summer (what’s left of it). THE PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Good afternoon fellow Goodyear Ski Club members.

As a reminder, this month has the Annual Swap Shop (Sept 27-30th) at Buckeye Sports Center. We still need volunteers to help out during any and all time slots. Please let me know via e-mail or phone if you can help out. Again, the swap is a critical event for not only the Club, but for local charities as well. The Beacon Journal has agreed to help us again this year by running an ad, so we owe them our gratitude. Additionally, if any Club members have children/grandchildren/etc in school, please ask if there is a Ski Club.

For those of you who are fans of Led Zeppelin, I urge you not to miss the Lock 3 show on August 31st. The band Zoso will perform, and I can promise you won’t be disappointed. Paula and Tim Lavey will be hosting this event - join us if you can. We also have an upcoming MetroPark hike on September 8th, along with the Annual Road Rally on September 22nd. Please see VP Teresa’s article on page 2 for more information.

As always, have a safe and happy summer (what’s left of it).

Vice President’s Report - Teresa Gifford We have had some fun already this summer, but we still have more opportunities to socialize and enjoy the non-ski season. See the list of upcoming events below to find that something for you!

8/10/12 (FRI.) – AKRON AEROS BASEBALL GAMES! Thank you Rita Tinker for organizing the two Aeros baseball games this summer. Both games

were great fun, and even turned into doubleheaders (for those who found out in time).

8/31/12 (FRI)– ROCK-THE-LOCK, Akron, OH “ZOSO”, a Led Zepplin tribute band – Look for a write-up in next month’s newsletter.

9/8/12 (SAT.) - SEPTEMBER HIKE This will be the Club’s last hike for the season. It will take place at Pine Grove Trail starting

at 9:30AM. The trailhead location is on Kendall Park Road, 9/10 of a mile west of Akron-Cleveland Road or about 2 miles east of the intersection of Akron-Peninsula and Truxell roads (Truxell Road turns into Kendall Park Road.) in Boston Heights, OH. Contact Teresa Gifford for details at 330-714-3643.

9/22/12 (SAT.) – ROAD RALLY & The J & Z WINETASTING/BONFIRE PARTY These will be combined events with Timken Ski Club. The day will start with a road rally in the

morning, then end in the evening with the all favorite J & Z Winetasting/Bonfire Party. Yes, once again, the Kovach’s have accepted to host this event at their place. See the detailed flyer on page 6 and the rules on page 7 for more information, and mark your calendars for this fun-filled combo event!

9/27-9/30/12 (THURS.-SUN.) – GSC SWAP SHOP GSC will once again be running a “swap shop” at Buckeye Sports on the last weekend in

September. Look for updates from President Chris Gifford and check out the flyer on page 3.

10/12-14/12 (FRI.-SUN.) – BOSTON MILLS OPEN HOUSE Here is another weekend we need to have club volunteers to help “man the booth” and promote

membership with our club. Contact Rita Tinker at 330-867-3982, or [email protected], if you can help out. Together as a club, we need to try and promote as many memberships as we can; we really are a fun group to hang out with!

10/20/12 (SAT) - FALL BIKE RIDE Larry Steele and Sandy Sucky are leading the Fall Bike ride again. Once more the ride will go to

Brandywine Falls, but this time riders can go over the new trail and bridge that has been built. Hopefully the weather will be okay and the leaves colorful. Meeting place will be at the Akron General Wellness Center on Allen Rd at 10AM. See article on page 5.

10/27/12 (SAT) – EUCHRE TOURNAMENT The GSC Euchre Tournament will be held at the Solnick’s place, with registration starting at

5:30PM and play at 6PM. Get ready for this great night of card playing. See application and additional information on page 9.

11/13/12 (TUE) – CHILI COOK-OFF The annual GSC “Chili Cook-Off” will occur once again during our November monthly meeting.

Get your recipes ready for the great competition this brings, because there are a lot of wonderful cooks in this club! More details to come as the date come near.

Please get in touch with me if you are interested in helping out with any of the above events, or if you have a great idea of your own. Thanks so much and I hope to see you soon!

Goodyear Ski Club members and family attended Akron Aeros bseball games on July 27th and August 10th. Surprisingly, both games were turned into doubleheaders. Unfortunately, on July 27th, the second game was delayed and rained out (more like poured out). The “Fireworks” continued as scheduled though and lasted for 15 minutes….during the rain!!! A few fireworks were set off and then the GRAND FINALLY. This was the first time I have seen fireworks in the rain!!! Amazing.

On August 10th, it was a great night for baseball and fabulous “Fireworks” (Beatle’s music theme) at game’s end! Thank you, Ken Neff, for doing a great job distributing the peanuts.

I would like to thank Robert Madison, Dave/JoAnn Mueller, Brenda/Larry Prince, Linda/Jerry Solnick, Linda Slicker, Chris Kraszewski, Bob/June Seidel, Debbie Young/family, Cameron/Regina Fraser, Teresa/Chris Gifford, Suzanne/Bill Nappi, Tom/Diane Renner, Scott/Kathy Wertz, Dale Wolboldt, Joe Shane, and Ken Neff. Your participation made these events a great success for the Club.

FALL FOLIAGE BIKE RIDE

Come and join us on Saturday, October 20, 2012 for a leisurely social fall foliage bike ride to Brandywine Falls in the Cuyahoga Valley. The ride will start at 10:00 AM from the Akron General Medical Center facility parking lot on Steels Corners Road in Stow. We will be riding the Bike-n-Hike Trail to Brandywine Road. From there, we follow the brand new trail down to the brand new bridge that crosses the freeway. The trail curves around after the bridge to the falls, where we can park our bikes & explore the nice scenery. You may want to bring a lock for your bike and a camera. You are in for a real treat if you choose to follow the boardwalk trail and steps down below the falls for a most spectacular view. This is a very historic area so you may want to to check out the site http://www.brandywinefalls.com/brandywine_falls.htm

Hopefully the leaves will be at their peak and the sun will be shining, as it was last year. From the falls we will ride back up the new trail to the Bike n Hike Trail. The total ride distance is about 16 miles. Afterwards, for those wanting to enjoy the fall folige afterglow with food & friends, we will have lunch at Rocknes on Steels Corners Road and Hudson Drive, with everyone responsible for their own meals.

Directions to the start – Take Rt. 8 to Steels Corners exit. Coming from the north, turn left onto Steels Corners Road. (coming from the south, turn right on Steels Corners Road.). Go to the light and turn left onto Allen Road. Follow this to the AGMC building parking lot on the left. We will be on the building’s south side, right in front of the bike trail. The AGMC address is 4300 Allen Rd, Stow.

Any questions contact Sandy Sucky at 330-929-0339 (or day of ride cell 330-328-6461)or e-mail ([email protected]), or call Larry Steele 330-434-3724 (cell 330-573-3760)

1:00 PM from 1333 Faircrest St. SE, Canton and eventually conclude at the same address. Rally participants: please arrive at least 15 minutes earlier than the start time to allow for line-up, rules and

course direction explanations. Cost is $5.00 per vehicle entered in the Rally, payable at starting line. The Winetasting and Picnic: No cost to attendees! The Club’s will provide all necessary tableware. We are asking the members and guests attending to bring an entrée, side dish or dessert, and what you plan to drink that day, especially, that bottle(s) of wine to share with all who attend! GSC/TSC Road Rally, September 22, 2012

General Road Rally Instructions:

The Rally begins at the home of Jim and Zelda Kovach in Canton, at 1333 Faircrest St. SE. The

simplest way there is to take I-77 to exit 109, Faircrest Street and turn east towards Gullivar’s

Travel Center/Wendy’s/McDonalds. Proceed east through two traffic lights (don’t count the two

at the entrance/exits to I-77), go past Canton South High School. After the stop sign, cross the

railroad tracks and count 4 driveways on your left. You are there! Please be at the Rally starting

line by 12:45PM. We will have a short organizational meeting and then you will receive your rally

instructions. Cars will then depart approximately 3 minutes apart. You will need a clipboard and

writing tools to most easily participate.

The Rally consists of Directions, indicated by bold print, that you must follow, and Questions, in

normal print. Fill in the answers to questions quickly so you don’t miss the next clue or turn. If

you follow directions and the speed limit, the Rally should take you about 2-1/4 hours to

complete.

You should be alert for answers to the questions. Most answers are found on roadside

advertising signs. Some will be found on informational signs or buildings, and a few tricky ones

will be on street/road signs.

The object of this Rally is to finish within the allotted time and with all questions answered

correctly. Points will be deducted for finishing too early or too late. Incorrect answers or

unanswered questions will count against you.

This is not a race! Travel at the appropriate speed limits on all US, State, County, and Township

roads. Be careful at all traffic signs and signals. If you feel that you need to turn around to revisit

a clue, please wait until traffic has cleared and it is safe to do so. Pull over, if necessary, to allow

other traffic to pass, should you need to for sign reading. Your safety is more important than any

answer. A traffic ticket will disqualify you from the rally.

If you get lost and need help finding the next turn, you can call Jim at 330-316-0717 with no

penalty! (Except for the harassment!) If you get totally lost, fed-up and are hungry and tired, you

may head directly to 1333 Faircrest St. SE, Canton, Ohio 44707 and surrender!

When you are finishing the Rally, make sure that all of your questions have been answered, to

the best of your ability, and all blanks are filled in BEFORE you check in at the top of the

driveway. You cannot fill in any blanks after check-in.

Final instructions: Have fun! Enjoy the drive/ride; don’t fight!

Thanks for joining us!

Your Road Rally Production Team
