Kiwanis Club of Streamwood Achieves Distinguished Status!

We are extremely pleased to announce that our club has been named a 2012-2013 Distinguished Club! Big thanks to Sue Begy who served as Club President during that time and did such a great job of helping us achieve this recognition. Congratulations to everyone for their hard work and great service to our community. We will be formally recognized at the I-I District Convention in August. The presentation of our Distinguished Club recognition will take place at the Friday Night Opening Session and Dinner.

Summer Celebration Recap

Once again, Streamwood Summer Celebration was a big success and Kiwanis played a part in making that happen. We participated in the parade, passing out our delicious peanuts. Michael Cecille dressed up as Mr. Peanut and really wowed the crowd. Donna Lenhardt has a great video of Michael strutting his stuff! We'd be happy to pass it along to anyone who'd like to see it. BIG thanks to everyone who also walked in the parade - Sandy, John, Terri, Donna, Maryann, Jim and our fabulous Key Club members! Our talent show was also well received, thanks to our great MC, Sandy Stewart. She was assisted by Mr. Peanut, Cathy Tampir and Pat Hart. We had 6 great acts that made it very difficult for our judges to make a decision! But they did and we thank them - Mary Thon, Tom Keating & Mr. Peanut! See a few of our photos from Summer Celebration on the following page.

We recently secured our 2nd grant this year, thanks to First Midwest Bank and Aneta Lysek. The grant, in the amount of $500.00, will be used to purchase school supplies for needy children in several local elementary schools. As we mentioned before, we would like to pursue other opportunities to apply for grants. If anyone has any experience with grant writing or is aware of a grant that we may apply for, please contact President Sandy or any member of the board.

Please feel free to share it with anyone who you may want to include in this event.

We hope you've all paid your dues by now to get the discounted rate of $90.00. If not, your $100.00 annual membership renewal is due by September 15. Kiwanian of the Year

It’s that time of year again when we give everyone the opportunity to nominate one deserving member of the club for the Kiwanian of the Year award. As last year’s winner, Cathy Tampir, will be this year’s coordinator. Nominees should be a member who participates in service projects and fundraising events, attends club meetings on a regular basis and who demonstrates a commitment to the ideals of Kiwanis and to the community. Per our Policies and Procedures, a member is only eligible if they have not received the Kiwanian of the Year Award in the past 3 years. Members who are NOT eligible this year are: Linda Danner, Aneta Lysek and Cathy Tampir. Nomination forms will be emailed to all members shortly. Please respond to Cathy by email ([email protected]) no later than Friday, August 22 indicating your nominee and why you believe that they are a good candidate for Kiwanian of the Year. The award will be presented at the Installation Banquet on September 23.

Peanut Days!!

We're moving along with our plans for Peanut Days, but continue to look for more groups to assist us over the weekend of September 26-27. We have many street corners that go unmanned and would like to utilize all that's available to us. If anyone knows of a group that may be interested in joining us, please give them the flyer on the following page and have them get in touch with us! Keep in mind that, as we've mentioned before, we are offering an added incentive this year to any group who brings in a new group. The flyer also elaborates on those details. In addition, we would like to increase our underwriting numbers and are looking for businesses or people to ask for assistance. Again, any help that you can provide us would be greatly appreciated, including your own personal donation to this very important fundraiser. Finally, don't forget that over peanut weekend, we need everyone’s help whether it be on a street corner, at a storefront, as a runner or working at Peanut Central. Please try to be available to help out, even if it’s only for an hour or two! AND feel free to invite a friend to join you………….what better way to get someone involved in Kiwanis than to have them come out to lend a hand for Peanut Days!

Our next planning meeting is being held on Tuesday, August 12 at 6:00 PM at A-1

Trophies. We hope to see you there!

6th Annual Kids Fishing Derby

Save the date for our 6th Annual Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday, September 6 at Surrey Woods Pond in Streamwood! We ask that everyone consider coming out to help with the derby and enjoy this great event. It doesn't take a lot of time and brings a lot of joy to our little participants! It will be open to kids 3-12 years of age and will include all the fishing, fun and prizes that we've offered in the past. For those of you who haven't helped out before, the tasks are easy…………registering our fishermen, keeping track of the smallest, largest and most fish caught by each child and awarding prizes and trophies. So, please save the date and be a part of the fun!! We guarantee you'll love it!!

Board Actions and Updates

At the July board meeting, these items were discussed/approved........ A basket with a value of up to $50.00 will

be donated to the Streamwood Chamber for their golf outing.

With the $500.00 grant we received from First Midwest Bank plus an additional $500.00 we have in the budget, we will be purchasing school supplies for local schools.

Sandy Stewart decided that she would like her $500.00 annual President's Project allowance sent to Children's Miracle Network.

The Budget Committee will be meeting on August 12 to create the budget for 2014-2015.

Discussion was had about our Edward Jones account, but was tabled until some details are clarified.

Terri Johnson provided an update on dues payments for the upcoming Kiwanis year. At this time, we may at risk of losing several members.

The board voted to acknowledge Mike Manzuk from the Chicago Loop with a special recognition from the club. He has been very generous with special events that we've hosted at the Loop and we want to show our appreciation.

As advisor to our Key Clubs, Terri Johnson has reported that they have both held officer meetings to prepare for the coming year. She's very confident that we have another great group this year who have already made plans for several projects including Phil's friends, Feed My Starving Children, our Kids Fishing Derby, Peanut Days, the soup kitchen, arts and crafts with the seniors and much more.

The excitement is building for Detroit No. 1 club members. In 2015, Kiwanis' founding club plans to celebrate 100 years of service to the Detroit community and the world. Detroit No. 1 is proud to host Kiwanis' 100th anniversary party on Saturday, January 24, 2015, at the Detroit Renaissance Marriott hotel. Along with Kiwanis International, the Michigan District is helping to prepare for this historic gathering. Many activities are planned, including a "Books for Kids" service project. Join us in Detroit to celebrate a century of Kiwanis service and help launch Kiwanis into the next century. Prior to this event, on New Year’s Day, there will be an even bigger Kiwanis float at the Rose Parade in Pasadena, California. Then, after the Detroit event, there will be many great celebrations in dozens of other cities across the globe. You’ll also see the anniversary theme involved with the projects we do for Kiwanis One Day and the other great service projects we work on. The celebration will peak with a birthday party during the 2015 annual convention in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Closer to home, our celebration will take place at Camp Independence in Ingleside, IL the first weekend in May 2015. The tentative plan is for local Kiwanians to do a service project at the camp, followed by a concert (possibly at Willow Creek Church) and dinner. Stay tuned for many updates on all these events and activities as the details are provided to us.

The I-I District Convention is being held August 7-10, 2014 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Bloomington, IL. At this time, Cathy Tampir is the only club member who will be attending the convention. She’ll provide a recap at the August 19 meeting and in the September newsletter.

Additional information will be announced as we get closer to the date.

Coming to Hoffman Estates

Moretti's and Whiskey River restaurants are on track to open in Hoffman Estates this November at the southeast corner of Higgins and Barrington roads near TGIF, Steak and Shake and Macaroni Grill. While most everyone is familiar with Moretti’s, the concept of Whiskey River is based on world-class barbecue with a honky-tonk flavor to its music and entertainment. Sounds fun! Another new business already open at Poplar Creek Crossing in Hoffman Estates is Maurice's. Maurice's is a reasonably priced woman's clothing store offering sizes 1-24. Poplar Creek Crossing is located at Route 59 and 90.

Hanover Park Car Show

These are actual complaints received by "Thomas Cook Vacations” from dissatisfied customers.......it’s hard to believe that people could be this naïve.

1. "I think it should be explained in the brochure that the local convenience store does not sell proper biscuits like custard creams or ginger nuts." 2. "It's lazy of the local shopkeepers in Puerto Vallarta to close in the afternoons. I often needed to buy things during 'siesta' time -- this should be banned." 3. "On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry. I don't like spicy food." 4. "We booked an excursion to a water park but no-one told us we had to bring our own swimsuits and towels. We assumed it would be included in the price." 5. "The beach was too sandy. We had to clean everything when we returned to our room." 6. "We found the sand was not like the sand in the brochure. Your brochure shows the sand as white but it was more yellow." 7. "They should not allow topless sunbathing on the beach. It was very distracting for my husband who just wanted to relax." 8. "No-one told us there would be fish in the water. The children were scared." 9. "Although the brochure said that there was a fully equipped kitchen, there was no egg-slicer in the drawers." 10. "We went on holiday to Spain and had a problem with the taxi drivers as they were all Spanish." 11. "The roads were uneven and bumpy, so we could not read the local guide book during the bus ride to the resort. Because of this, we were unaware of many things that would have made our holiday more fun." 12. "It took us nine hours to fly home from Jamaica to England. It took the Americans only three hours to get home. This seems unfair." 13. "I compared the size of our one-bedroom suite to our friends' three-bedroom and ours was significantly smaller." 14. "The brochure stated: 'No hairdressers at the resort.' We're trainee hairdressers and we think they knew and made us wait longer for service." 15. "When we were in Spain, there were too many Spanish people there. The receptionist spoke Spanish, the food was Spanish. No one told us that there would be so many foreigners." 16. "We had to line up outside to catch the boat and there was no air-conditioning." 17. "It is your duty as a tour operator to advise us of noisy or unruly guests before we travel." 18. "I was bitten by a mosquito. The brochure did not mention mosquitoes." 19. "My fiancé and I requested twin-beds when we booked, but instead we were placed in a room with a king bed. We now hold you responsible and want to be re-reimbursed for the fact that I became pregnant. This would not have happened if you had put us in the room that we booked."
