Many thanks go out to Dave Heffron for filling in for John Marshall at our August dance. Dance attendance was lower than usual due to many Trailblazer members being out of town at other events. A sizeable number were dancing at Vic Ceder’s C3A week in McCloud, while others were in Cherry Ridge or Kirkwood. Those who attended the Trailblazer weekend were treated to a great dance. Dave is very creative and provides unique material for everyone. He even included hex squares. Thank you very much, David, for coming to our rescue. You really did a remarkable job — with such short notice. Thanks to David Moorhouse, John Martin, Robert Morris, and Bruce and Nancy Rosenblum for taking all the pictures and getting the caller’s quotes. A C3A week at McCloud with Vic Ceder certainly builds one’s confidence. You see concepts that you usually don’t see at a C3A dance. Concepts like Initially and Finally are workshopped until they became more routine. After returning home I was excited and eager to attend the following week’s PACE dance. I got Carolyn up early so we could arrive at Mel’s Place to start the dance. I checked the website the night before to make sure of the starting time. Upon arriving, I found the dance hall locked and nobody around. I checked my iPhone calendar and discovered that I was a week early for the dance. That’s got to be a record for showing up early. And that is a record for getting Carolyn up early! We are all saddened by the recent loss of Les Heins due to a massive heart attack. Les regularly attended Trailblazer dances and was a big supporter of square dancing. He and his wife Carol have been instrumental in revitalizing Advanced and Challenge square dancing in the San Diego area. We will all miss Les. We look forward to Barry Clasper’s visit with the Trailblazers for our September dance. We are contending with the Labor Day holiday weekend, but hopefully dancers will stay home rather than travel. Barry always calls a great dance and everyone is guaranteed a fun time. See you on the dance floor.

Barry Clasper, Trailblazers September 2012 Caller

Barry resides in Toronto, Ontario with his wife, Pam. They started dancing in 1973, just two weeks after the birth of their youngest son. Barry started calling in 1984 when a local C2 tape group asked for help with some things they couldn't find on teaching tapes. He figured if he were going to write material to help them, he might as well call it. Since then his calling skills expanded in both directions and he now calls from Mainstream through C-4. As a dancer, Barry loves choreography that is smooth and flowing yet also provides some mental stimulation and the occasional sur-prise. When calling, he strives to create this effect through smooth danceable choreography flavored with a bit of unusual positioning to create a dance experience containing both physical and mental ele-ments. Barry changed careers in September 2007. He retired from IBM after 30 years and is now a full-time caller and able to travel more than he has in the past. He has called at weekends and conventions in 7 provinces, DC, and 25 states, as well as Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Japan, England and the Czech Republic. Barry is currently a permanent staff caller with AACE (Academy for Advanced and Challenge Enthusiasts) and also a member of CALLERLAB and the Gay Callers Association. Within CALLERLAB he is a member of the Board of Governors, is on the Executive Commit-tee and is Chairman of the Challenge Committee. He has written articles for Zip Coder, The Call Sheet and American Square Dance Magazine.

Bob and Cynthia Casebolt’s 61st Anniversary Tour. Bob and I left

San Diego May 20th for family events and returned July 26. Much of that

time was spent in our daughter's cabin north of Lake Dillon, CO. Also

saw former neighbors in Grand Junction and Monument. Between our

grandson's high school graduation and parties and the Colorado family

(12 of them) ranch event we drove to AACE and Kirkwood. Stopped in

Kansas City to visit high school and elementary school friends.

Left July 31 for Maui.

Just had time to download and start reading the Trailblazer online. Mahalo (thanks)!

I always enjoy pictures. The section on the birthdays and anniversaries is a nice addition.

I'm calling our summer travels our 61st anniversary (June 3, 1951) tour. We plan to be

back in time for the September dances, providing other family events don't conflict.

Les Heins Tribute. Today my favorite person, always caring husband and love of my life died in my son's arms. God didn't ask us if it was okay if He took him, He just decided it was Les' time to go be with his mother, who died 22 years ago today. He died doing what he enjoyed...taking care of his home, this time the spa, so he wouldn't have to buy a new one. Just like Les to be fixing stuff instead of disposing of it. (He liked to say that's why he kept me around instead of getting a younger model...HA!) His sense of humor was unmatched Swing Along The Trail (continued next page)

and if he didn't tease you about something, you wondered if he didn't like you! Sometimes he'd say something so funny he'd laugh until he had to

leave the room because he couldn't stop. I would say, "Dad's cracking himself up again." (Thanks, Jane for posting that wonderful memory!) Then he was going to go to the Escondido Library to tutor people on the computer. Later this week he was going to drive people to their doctor appointments. We were going to square dance tonight and several times this week. Just like him to die at home, in his backyard, where we watched the meteor shower late Saturday night. Just wanted you to know he loved you all and read everything on my Facebook so he didn't have to get his own page. Thanks for all your posts. You are all very sincere and supportive. Thanks for caring so much!
