This month it’s not all about the money. Oh, there was money to be
made at the joint meeting in Alda. The CE conversation and handouts
provided by Rick Cordaro were loaded with ideas. So was the
“Inherited” IRA Distribution Flow Chart from attorney Dan Bahensky. A
special thank you goes to JJ Green for his Affordable Health Care Act
presentation. And besides all that the food was good and the company
was great! Thanks to all that attended.
This month it’s about recognition to our chapter members! JJ Green
was present for the surprise announcement that he was awarded the
2013 NE NAIFA Distinguished Service Award! Well Deserved
Congratulations JJ!
Matt Green was also honored as the 2013 Gene and Shirley Aabel
Award recipient. Congratulations Matt! Our chapter has a long history
of engaged, awarded individuals and JJ Green and Matt Green are our
most recent examples.
This month it’s about our commitment to our business. Each of us
runs a business. Our business runs better when there are advocates
working hard to make sure our interests and more importantly, the
interests of our clients are heard. You may have received a phone
call, voicemail or message from an advocate in our chapter. The
dedicated NAIFA member calling you is asking you to start, continue
or increase your support to IFAPAC. There are many compelling
reasons to give. Please give.
The President’s Message Continued
Dave Skutnik, President
Outside of our chapter, a well known state senator and advocate of our
business is asking for your support. If you have not made your
decision, consider supporting State Senator Tom Carlson for
Governor. “He is one of us” is what I have heard at NAIFA meetings
across the state.
Finally, an unsolicited note was sent to me from Fran Crowe CLU, a
retiring 39 year NAIFA veteran . . . “I joined NAIFA in 1974 and have
been a member since until December 2013; it wasn’t too long after I
started contributing to LUPAC(IFAPAC) and did so until 12/2013.
Even though I sold life insurance for a multi-line company, my first
manager expressed how important it was to truly believe in the life
products we sold and that we should belong to our life association as a
true professional sales rep. Even though I wasn’t super active in the
association (due to distance) I have always believed in the importance
of belonging. The camaraderie of the members has been super and
the magazine (Advisor) has been chock full of great sales ideas.”
“You can be proud of this association as it is one of the best in the
country – the leadership has been outstanding and the programs have
been outstanding as well! I regret missing many of them.”
“If any of my thoughts were important, the best advice I could give
would be to the new members, especially those who are strictly life
and health sales people. When you earn your bread and butter in life
and health sales you should be obligated to belong to your
professional association. There are far too many agents that don’t
belong to NAIFA that are riding your coat-tails reaping the benefits.
Your dues may be $500-600 per year, but it may be the best money
you can spend when it comes to sharing with your fellow agents and
developing a ton of sales ideas. I was always proud to carry my
NAIFA dues card in my wallet and could always show it if a prospect
asked if I belonged to my professional association. It may be the one
thing that makes a sale for you. Be a Professional and continue to
work on LUTC, CLU and related studies. It will put you head and
shoulders above the competition and your paychecks will be greater,
too!” Heartland NAIFA thanks you for your support Fran.

LIFE INSURANCE INDUSTRY REACTS TO CHAIRMAN CAMP’S
DRAFT TAX REFORM PROPOSAL
Washington, D.C. (February 27, 2014) – The life insurance industry recognizes the
efforts of House Ways & Means Committee Chairman David Camp and his entire tax-writing
panel to update the nation’s tax code.
But life insurance companies, agents and brokers are greatly concerned over the
effect the chairman’s proposal would have, if implemented, on the 75 million American
families and thousands of businesses that rely on the industry for help in responsibly
managing risks and planning for their financial futures.
One provision, on company-owned life insurance (COLI), would impose new taxes
on life insurance used by businesses small and large. Many businesses use COLI to protect
against financial risk or job loss stemming from the death of owners or key employees. COLI
also is a widely-used funding mechanism for employee and retiree benefits. Congress af-
firmed the benefits and tax treatment of COLI and assured its responsible use in bipartisan
legislation enacted in 2006.
The industry also is concerned about a whole new series of tax increases on life
insurance companies that would, if adopted, make industry products such as life insurance
and annuities less affordable. In the aftermath of the financial crisis, and with people living
longer than ever before, the guarantees offered by the industry are more important than
ever. Proposals to make industry products less accessible make no sense.
In addition, the industry is concerned with the chairman’s proposal to impose new
taxes on retirement savings and change contribution limits and distribution rules that would
create significant impediments to Americans’ much-needed retirement readiness efforts.
The House Ways & Means Committee – indeed, all of Congress -- should focus on
expanding opportunities for individuals to save for their retirement and employers to
voluntarily offer workplace retirement plans.
Life insurance companies, agents and brokers look forward to working with the
chairman and his entire committee to explain how industry products, services and financial
advice benefit 75 million American families and thousands of businesses across the
country.
