Reverend Billie MartiniReverend Billie MartiniReverend Billie MartiniReverend Billie Martini————MinisterMinisterMinisterMinister Most of you know that I love
holidays, all of them! So as I was
“un-decorating” my home from
Christmas this year, I didn’t want to
take down my purple Christmas tree
in the living room, so I took the
Christmas ornaments off and
replaced them with pink and red silk roses. I
turned it into a Valentine tree. Ralph and I now
enjoy our Valentine tree celebrating love. (and
the house doesn’t look quite as bare)
Even though love is celebrated in February more
than any other month because it includes
Valentines Day, we at Unity of Surprise celebrate
love every day.
I always describe our dynamic spiritual community
as a community of love. And we are! People
attending Unity of Surprise for the first time always
comment on the love they feel as they enter our
facility and how welcomed they are. People are
attracted to our community because they feel
loved and accepted here. They are able to freely
be who they are, love in expression.
As we enter our year of “greater things”, let’s take
love to a deeper level. Let us emulate our brother,
our Way Shower Jesus who when asked which
commandment in the law is the greatest,
answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with
all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all
your mind.” This is the greatest and first command-
ment. And a second is like it, “You shall love your
neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22: 37-39
Our mission statement reads: “To love, serve and
inspire all people as we celebrate our connected-
ness to God and to one another.”
I believe our mission statement is reflective of
what Jesus is telling us. As we, at Unity of Surprise,
continue to live our mission statement, as we take
love to a deeper level this year, loving God within
all our hearts and our neighbors (everyone) as
ourselves, I know “greater things” will be realized
and made manifest in 2013.
Happy Valentines Day, Happy February,
From one expression of love to another,
Reverend Billie

Can you feel it? Love is in the air!
Now, even though we find ourselves in the month
of romance, that’s not the type of love I’m
talking about. I’m referring to a love of life!
Last month, I had the privilege of giving the
lesson on one of the Sundays, and I spoke about
one of my favorite people… Leo Buscaglia. One
of Dr. Buscaglia’s most famous talks is entitled,
the art of being fully human. And at the heart of
being fully human is the ability and the willingness
to open yourself up to loving and being loved.
We spend so much of our lives striving for what
we consider success; a great career, money, or
something else in a material sense, that we often
forget the most important aspect of life… love.
And that all begins with loving yourself. But don’t
stop there! You only need to love yourself
enough to where you’re ready to give it away to
the world—to let your light shine so bright that
everyone around you will need sunglasses in
order to see you.
Anything we do in this world should be an
expression of love. That also includes helping
others. And helping others can take many forms.
It can be in the form of a new business that
brings joy and happiness to its community, a
charity that helps feed the homeless, or some-
thing as simple as a smile as you stand in line at
the convenience store or at the bank.
No matter how you feel, don’t let an opportunity
go by to smile or to brighten someone’s day. You
never know what effect you may have on some-
one. You may never see the results of that effect,
but that doesn’t mean it’s not there. (Smile!)
Let’s Make Music!

A Course in Miracles (ACIM) is a self-
study curriculum that aims to assist its
readers in achieving spiritual transformation. The
book describes a purely non-dualistic philosophy
of forgiveness and includes what are meant to be
practical lessons and applications for the practice
of forgiveness in one's daily life. The introduction to
the book contains the following summary, "Nothing
real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists.
Herein lies the peace of God." (Ref: Wikipedia)

We celebrate by bringing cans of soup to give to
the Valley View Community Food Bank in Young-

Our love cords are strong, far reaching
and perpetual. We can experience love in all
circumstances. Love grants us the freedom and courage to
transcend all human contrived differences based
on beliefs, race, gender, age, economics,
education, religion, sexual preference, national
origin, political affiliation, favorite TV shows, food
preferences, humor, values or other conditions.
I invite each of us to be Love Ambassadors today
and every day, reaching deeper into us to love
people or circumstances that we may have
thought were not possible to love or even like. Just
for the month of February, I invite each of us to
intentionally speak, think, be and act with love
and - to celebrate the results. I would love to hear
about your experience, if you would like to share
your Love Ambassador journey. Please be
somebody’s and perhaps, everybody’s Valentine!

At this time of year, especially with
Valentine’s Day, our love thoughts are
often channeled through sentiments,
gifts, flowers, chocolates (lots of them)
celebrations and cards. Much is
written, sung, spoken, created and believed
about love. Love is the universe’s boomerang;
when we send it out, it returns quickly and with
greater force than it was sent. In its most vibrant
expression, love is a sacred gift to be magnifi-
cently felt, shared, cherished and expanded. Love
is our true nature and it is an everlasting, limitless
aspect of the divine essence of every being. Alive
in each of us, love has enormous capacity to
magnify, grow, radiate and transform everyone
and the world.
Recently I went through boxes of memorabilia
and found love letters from men I had loved and
who loved me, as well as those from my parents,
family and friends. What a blast of warmth, I
recalled how great it felt to give and receive the
love that was in those notes! While the paper on
which they were written or the pictures are fading
and dry, the memories are alive, quickening my
joy and reminding me of how strong the pull to
love really is. What a blessing for me to have
re-discovered the treasure that is in those boxes.
Perhaps you recall your favorite quotes or
passages about love, whether from the Bible,
Kahil Gibran, Maya Angelou, your grandchildren,
a poem, a song or in a note that a loved one
sent. Perhaps you remember that moment in time
when love was so strong that all else faded away
or when you first really embraced loving yourself,
the divine or another person. If it seems right, take
a moment to share those memories with a friend
or family member or write them in your journal.
The greatest thing in all my life is loving you.

Book: Lessons In Truth by H. Emilie Cady
Come! Gather, learn and discuss the basic
teachings of Unity. Over 100 years ago, knowing
and living these truths healed Myrtle Fillmore,
transformed Charles Fillmore, and inspired a
dynamic spiritual movement. Today, these same
truth teachings continue to change lives and
transform minds and hearts.
In this class you will learn how to use these Truth
principles to claim your power and improve your
health, prosperity, and happiness.
Topics covered include:
What is Unity’s concept of God?
Why do bad things happen to good people?
How does our thinking determine the quality of our
life?
What is the purpose of denials and affirmations?
How does prayer work?
As with all Unity classes, there is no charge. A love
offering will be accepted.

Remember when you were little
and you did something special for
someone—like walk to the corner
grocery store for a neighbor, or
help an older person carry things
into their house? Didn’t it make
you feel good? They thanked you
so sincerely you knew they really, really appreci-
ated what you did. My favorite was on May 1st,
May Day, when we made flower holders from
construction paper, filled them with cut flowers
and hung them on the neighborhood doors,
rang the bell and RAN. Hiding in the bushes to
see their excitement when they opened the door
was the best because they didn’t know who left
them. That to me is Selfless Service direct from
the heart. We still do that now but we think about
it first. Rationalizing whether or not we can help
out or “should” takes the thrill out of it for me.
Anonymous giving is the best because both
parties get the excitement and gratitude
naturally. We can’t always do Anonymous giving
but we can bring our own spirits up by doing for
someone else. Our country is full of negative
news right now. Can we take on doing one thing
per day for someone else… just because? The
energy shift we could create in our community
will brighten for everyone. Maybe its picking a
few oranges for someone down the street that
doesn’t walk so well anymore. Maybe its inviting
someone to lunch or coffee just for a change of
pace. Maybe its volunteering at church for
something you’ve not done before. February is
Appreciating Volunteers month in Sun City West.
I’m going to take on one special gesture per day
for someone else through February—the more
Anonymous the better. Will you too?
Let’s brighten the community we live in
and start a new trend.

Our first class, conducted on January 13th, was a
huge success based on the tremendous increase in
activity on our Unity of Surprise Face Book page in
the following days.
The attendance was fabulous, with Facebook
experience running from total novice to highly
familiar.
I believe that in answering good questions from the
more experienced we may have left the “brand
new”, first timers, a bit lost. Therefore on Sunday,
February 17th, following the Worship Celebration
and hospitality, we will conduct a class for the
VERY beginners starting at 11:30 am. Location to
be announced based on the number attending.
If you do not have a Facebook page, we will
actually create one with you, right then and there.
We will also teach you the most basic steps i.e.
how to set privacy settings, find friends and send
invitations and upload pictures. You will also learn
how to connect with Unity of Surprise Facebook
page, make and share comments and photos
with friends and family.
Everyone is welcome, however, this will be geared
to the novice.
There will be sign up sheets available, so please
come and begin to enjoy!

“MAKING ART IS LIKE TAKING A VACATION

This month we will be making vision/affirmation
boards.
This month we will branch out from SoulCollage®
and do something a little different. We will use our
intuition to create cards or a poster of what we
want to bring into our lives. We will use magazines
to find pictures that will help us visualize health,
love, healing or whatever speaks to you. The pro-
cess will also include writing positive affirmations.
Images, paint, stencils, paper, glue… will be
provided. We all know that positive thinking
attracts positive happenings.
No art experience is needed for this project. Just
come, play, enjoy and go home with something
that will move you along your way to a positive life.
Love offering plus $5.00 for materials will be
accepted.

It’s a new year and time to start planning our

you had a secret desire to be? Now is your
chance to be ‘discovered’. No experience or
theater background is necessary, just a willing
spirit. In addition, if you have a hidden or known

We will have a short meeting after fellowship in

We need volunteers to bake scones. These can
be made and frozen ahead of time. You can do

Acupressure is the practice of applying hand or
finger pressure to specific energetic or conductive
points on the body. It helps to activate the body’s
recuperative ability, assists in diminishing congestion
and promotes vitality. This hands on work releases
and strengthens the body’s energy system. It is
especially helpful with stress related conditions. It is
not meant to replace medical care although it can
be an effective complementary therapy. PJ is
offering 20 minutes sessions and because of the

trusts in the creative, regenerating, transforma-
tive power of Divine Love.
Through God’s Wisdom, we immerse the dear
ones for whom we pray in God’s absolute love.
We see these Beloved as perfect, whole &
complete, limitless & free.
A Prayer Request box is located on the infor-
mation counter in the lobby and also in the
Sanctuary each Sunday.
Remember, God is always with you. All His
blessings and goodness are yours by divine
inheritance. God is the freeing transformative
power within; infinite Intelligence and Wisdom,
always your light and inspiration, healing and
harmonizing in every way.
I deny the appearance of evil
and pour out my love
onto the world.

There has been a change in leadership to our
group. Janice Weidner has accepted to be our
new Co-Chairwoman since Patti Masters has had
to step down due to health reasons. I feel privi-
leged to have teamed up with Patti in getting our
“UPS” social women’s activities up and running
from its inception. We have shared good times,
had a lot of fun, made new friends and bonded in
spiritual fellowship—where two or more are gath-
ered—as well as created wonderful memories.
Patti, we thank and appreciate you.
Jan and I are now ready to pick up the ball for the
coming new year. Our next event will be:
Phoenix Art Museum
Wednesday, February 27 at 3:00 pm
Car pool from church at 2:00 pm
Admission is free. We will go on a private group
tour with a docent. We will be ‘breaking bread’ for
dinner at the Palette Restaurant that serves soup,
salad and sandwiches in the $12 –15 price range.
Please sign up at the information table as we
need a minimum of 10 people for the tour. Come
join us for a fun day. You can contact Valerie Grif-
fin at 523.328.9471 or Jan Weidner at 623.975.7174.

And Potluck LuncheonAnd Potluck LuncheonAnd Potluck LuncheonAnd Potluck Luncheon Sunday, February 24, 2013 after the service
Please join your Unity family after the 10:00 am
Worship Celebration for our Annual Business
Meeting.
We’ll eat lunch and then begin our meeting
where we’ll celebrate the successes of 2012,
elect board Members, review the budget for
2013 and attend to general church business.
The support and commitment of our members,
spiritually, physically, emotionally and financially
is paramount to our success as a spiritual com-
munity. The Annual Business Meeting gives us, as
members, the opportunity to have a “say” in
what we’re about and in our hopes and dreams
for our future. It gives us a chance to celebrate
all the good we’ve experienced this past year
and to look forward with anticipation to this next
great year.
Everyone is welcome, members and nonmem-
bers, however, only members may vote. Please
also note: per our bylaws, members must vote
either in person or by absentee ballot to retain
membership at Unity of Surprise.
Please bring a dish to share, beverages will be
provided. Remember, You put the U in Unity!
