THE SHEPHERD’S VOICE

Dear Parishioners,

This year the calendar allows us to celebrate on a Sunday this beautiful feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple. It is a feast of light and faith, “the Meeting” (as it is called in the Eastern Church-es) of the Messiah with his people. What I find fas-cinating is that among all the people who would have been bustling about the temple, only two recognize what is happening: that the Lord has come to his Temple.

Faith, as we know, is a gift. It is a type of “insight” because it allows people to look deeply into the reality of things and recognize dimensions that other people tend to miss.

Mary and Joseph are fulfilling a prescription of the Jewish Law and are redeeming or buying back their first born son. God had spared the firstborn of his people on that Passover night in Egypt, and this pious couple, faith-filled Jews, were observing the law.

But there was something deeper here. Sime-on had been promised he would lay eyes on the Mes-siah, and the Holy Spirit revealed to him that this child would be the glory of Israel and a light for all the nations. Anna, always in the Temple, went about telling every one about the child. Two devout, faith-ful people, longing for the redemption of their peo-ple, led by the Holy Spirit, saw the fulfilment of their hope. They looked into the face of the Messiah, into the face of God!

In the Good Shepherd, Father Tom

FEAST OF ST. BLAISE 2/3/2020

Blessing of Throats will be done during the 8:00 am Mass.

According to tradition, Blaise was of noble birth and, after being educated in the Christian faith, was made bishop of Sebastia. Alt-hough Christianity had been adopted about 300 CE as the state religion in Armenia, the Roman emper-or Licinius began a persecution of the Christians, and Blaise was discovered and apprehended. While impris-oned, he miraculously cured a boy from fatally choking. After being torn with wool combers’ irons, Blaise was beheaded. Subsequent legends, notably the apocryphal Acts of St. Blaise, claim that, before Blaise was made bishop, he was a physician possessed of wonderful healing power. Nu-merous miracles were attributed to him, including the cure of diseased beasts during his refuge, thus accounting for his also being the patron saint of wild animals. He was venerated as the patron of sufferers from throat diseases in the East by the 6th century and in the West by the 9th century.
