The Present State of the Translations from the Shih chi To the memory of FrUz Jäger
By Timoteus Pokora (Pr aha)
Introduction
My notes and bibliography represent in some way a continuation of F. JÄGER's article Der heutige Stand der Schi-ki Forschung 1 published thirty years ago, but with much more limited aims. In September 1955 during the Ostasientagung in Leipzig Professor Jäger an.nounced the publication of a list of translations from the Shih chi into some European languages. Jäger's idea met with a warm approval but his untimely death in 1957 prevented him from fulfilling this task. Preparing a study on Ssu-MA CH'IEN in 1960 I feit an urgent necessity of such a list which may facilitate a preliminary orientation of the students of ancient China or of Ssu-ma Ch'ien and at the same time stimulate new translations from the Shih chi. As the matter stands, some of the chapters were translated many times while some others are not translated at all or in full and sometimes the translations are out of date. I believe that with a more rational distribution of the necessary efforts there could have existed a full translation of the Shih chi already for some decades.
The history of !arger translations from the Shih chi begins probably with M. BROSSET's French translation of the chapter 123 in 1828. A systematic but at the same time badly organized effort was performed by August PFIZMAIER (1808-1887) - a doctor born in Karlsbad who studied in Prague- whose translation gluted the Sitzungsberichte der Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien for many years. Pfizmaier, a polyglot based on self-taught, translated eighty c:hapters from dynastic histories, twenty-four of them from the Shih chi. There was nobody to surpass Pfizmaier in the quantity of translations, perhaps only E. von ZAcH. The quality of Pfizmaier's translations is generally doubted, even if they were not yet systematically examined 2• Whatever opinions there may be, there are even now some chapters of the Shih chi translated only by Pfizmaier; those interested in them should be advised to read the translation always with the original text.
In 1892 Leon de RosNY announced that he is going to print a French translation of the Shih chiS, but nothing was published. It was only some

fifty years after Pfizmaier that Edouard CHAVANNES (1865-1918) published his monumental translation in five volumes (1895-1905) which together with his Introduction represents something like the Prolegomena zu einer jeden künftigen Arbeit über das Shih chi, die als Wissenschaft wird auftreten können, if we may be allowed to paraphrase the title of the well-known book by I. KANT on methaphysics. With his forty-seven chapters Chavannes surpassed almost two times Pfizmaier. It is hardly necessary to give an evaluation of Chavannes' work, and we may only regret that after more than ten years of work Chavannes sighed because of "cette interminable affaire 11 4 and did not accomplish his immense work.
After the untimely death of Chavannes mainly German scholars became interested in the Shih chi. F. HIRTH published in 1917 another translation of the chapter 123 on Ferghana, E. HAENISCH translated twenty-four mapters 5 treating mostly the Warring States period of which only the chapter 48 has been published in 1951 and recently the translation of four other chapters (75-78). Let us hope that all translations of Haenisch will be published as well as those by Jäger, now in his inheritance in Hamburg. Although the last years of Jäger's life were devoted to translations from and to studies on the Shih chi he was unfortunately able to publish a small part of his work only 6.
In recent years the Shih chi was studied especially in the U.S.A. The important translations and studies by Derk BonnE published just before the last war are too well-known to require a detailed information here. Burton WATSON has devoted his dissertation in 1951 to a translation of the chapter 124, in 1958 published his fundamental study on Ssu-ma Ch'ien, and finally the beginning of 1962 saw the publication of his two volumes Records of the Grand Historian of China 7 • Watson translated more mapters than Chavannes: fifty-seven in full and nine mapters in part, all of which pertain to the comparatively short period of 209 to about 100 B.C. It is apparent that Ssu-ma Ch'ien preferred to write on "modern" history, and we may therefore welcome Watson's idea to pay attention to these mostly untranslated mapters.
At the same time as Haenisch's translations there was also published F. A. KIERMAN's book on Ssu-ma Cb'ien's historiographical attitude together with a translation of four chapters of the Shih chi (80-83) . There are however still other studies and translations in the U.S.A. not published as yet 8•

Wong concluded that this biography was probably not copied from the Han shu into the Shih chi.

In the Soviet Union during the last decade V. PANASJUK publi.shed an i•nportant contribution Syma Czjan, lzbrannoe, Moscow 1956, .edrt~d and introduced by L. I. DuMAN, where seventeen chapters of the Sh1h du were translated. The translator selected almest entirely from the category of biographies (lieh -chuan) according to their literary and artist~c value. This and the astonishingly great nurober of ninety-thousand copres show that the selection was intended for a general reader. Of course, there existed alreudy many decades earlier translations from the Shih chi into Russian, the most significant from the point of historiography being those by N . Ja . EieURIN (Iakinf) on the nations of Central Asia published in the middle of the 19th century. The well-known sinologue V. M. ALEKSEEV (1881-1951) translated some chapters as specimen of Iiterature too, a part of them being accessible also in German (the chapter 126).
It is evident that the Russian sinologues were the first to translate successfully some chapters of the Shih chi as specimen of excellent fiction; the same method was later followed by B. WATSON. Of course, the Soviet colleagues also studied Ssu-ma Ch'ien and the Shih chi as a historical source as may be seen soonl e. g. on the excellent studies by Ju. L. KRoL' 9 who has written a large (not yet published) study on Ssu-ma Ch'ien as a historian of the fall of the Ch'in dynasty. We may hope that the Academy of Seiences of the U.S.S.R. will undertake a great translation from the Shih chi.
It seems a little strange that Chavannes' work on the Shih chi was not continued by French scholars; even its republication took place during the war in Peking. But even if some decades passed from the publication of Chavannes' translationl there is now in Paris Max KALTENMARK working on a continuation of it. The Hong Kong University Press is going to republish Les Memoires historiques de Se-ma Ts'ien together with new translations by Kaltenmark of at least all the remairring chapters on the hereditary houses (48-60).
However much has already be-en dorre in the translating of the Shih chi and however reliable many of the translations undoubtedly are, there still remains much to be done. The early translations by ZoTTOLI, IMBAULT-HUART, BRos:>ET and others are largely of interest for the history of sinology, those of PFIZMAIER are more useful, being much more numerous, but cannot be used without being compared with the text, as I have already pointed out. It would be very difficult for me to give here an appreciation of every translationl and a sinologue will undoubtedly know that it was only with Chavannes and later with Jäger, Haenlsch

lator's learned colleagues; there are two exceptions with the translations by Panasjuk and Watson for the general public, but this fact does only increase the merit of both translators.
Now, it is only the chapter 60 the translation of which has not been published as yet, but the interested sinologues should try to present complete translations of the chapters 54, 67, 71, 74, 126 to the learned public. If this is done, we might have at our disposal an almest complete translation of the Shih chi, though scattered in numerous special journals and books. But, what is most needed, is a new full translation of the Shih chi which should be executed preferably under the auspices of some learned body according to the high standards reached by the best translators. When even the unorganized effort of French, German, Russian and American scholars has contributed much to the translation of the Shih chi into European languages, an international cooperation would be much desired and promising. This, I hope, will become apparent from my following bibliography.
A List of the Translations from the Shih chi (chapters 48-130) into English, Russian, French, German and occasionally into other European languages.
My list was originally based on a small bibliography on the same subject compiled by Piet van der LooN. I was able to find out some other items, mostly in Russian, by myself, but especially through the kind help of several interested scholars. I am much obliged to D. Bodde, H. H. Dubs, C. S. Goodrich, Y. Hervouet, Ju. L. Krol', R. Vjatkin, H. Wilhelm, A. F. Wright and again toP. van der Loon for their advice and criticism. Without their assistance my list could not have reached the number of 296 items.
My reason for giving as much items for translations (and sometimes even of paraphrases) as possible - even if I cannot naturally hope for completeness - is to introduce to others not only the translations as such but also to the relevant research done on the respective chapters of the Shih chi. Therefore, if necessary, I give in brackets the pagination of the entire quoted article . Full translations are given before partial translations and paraphrases, while in these categories the items are arranged according to the date of publication.
