Dear Friends, Shari and I returned recently from a trip to Ireland. In many respects it was more of a pilgrimage than a vacation. My great-grandfather and great-grandmother and their parents immigrated to the United States from County Donegal somewhere between 1846-1852. We’re not completely sure of the time. Like the story of many American families, they hopscotched across the country. Landing in Philadelphia, being there for a while, then migrating westward to Ohio, and by 1867 to Iowa, where they joined the Linn Grove Presbyterian Church. We spent some time in County Donegal, which is lovely, but not the most popular parts of Ireland to visit. Donegal is part of Ulster, that is the northern part of Ireland, but it is in the Republic of Ireland and not Northern Ire-land. It is the one county in the Republic with a sizeable Protestant/Presbyterian population. While there we were constantly confronted with our Presbyterian heritage. While trying to track down some family ties in some graveyards we ended up in little town of Ramelton, home of Francis Makemie, the father of American Presbyterianism. It’s a small world. I learned about Francis Makemie long ago, and here he and my family originated from the same area. While in Donegal we stayed at the Longvale B & B near Lifford. It is a working farm owned by Mervyn and Jean McKean. Their house dates from 1611, and the story goes that James II rested there on his way to lay siege to the city of Derry just before he was defeated at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. We didn’t know a thing about the family when we made our reservation, but it soon became apparent to me that this was a Presbyterian home. I mean that both religiously and culturally. Jean was a member of the Presbyterian Women and was active in PW at the Presbytery level. She had cookbooks and knitted items that the PW had made and were selling as fundraisers. (We bought some. Can’t have too many Presbyterian cookbooks.) They had literature out that suggested they were Presbyterians. Framed needle point works reminded visitors that “We are justified by grace…” James, Mervyn & Jean’s son, who is active in the farm operation, is a lay preacher. The Sunday morning we were there he visited with us before he left to fill the pulpits at two small Presbyterian churches. Maybe it is because they’ve lived in the crucible of “The Troubles,” but there was a pervasive sense that faith and life were inseparable, that our work is a vocation done to the glory of God. The Tenets of the Reformed Faith weren’t mere words trotted out every so often. The people we met embodied them in their fierce spirit of independence, in their devotion to learning, and in their understanding that the freedom of being a Christian brings with it huge responsibilities for learning about your faith, for practicing it through prayer, study, and service. When I said the people were culturally Presbyterian, I mean that these values derived from their practice of religion imbue other facets of their lives. This is who these people are. It was interesting to observe and experience. It also gives us some insight into why the American Revolution was denounced as “that Presbyterian rebellion,” and why Francis Makemie, in an act of civil disobedience, was arrested for preaching without a license. He was later acquitted in one of the first cases asserting religious freedom. While visiting the Ulster American Heritage Center housed in the former manse of the Monreagh Presbyterian Church (the oldest Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Ireland), a call came into the Center, and I heard the gentleman who answered the phone say, “Just a minute, I have some folks from Danville, Kentucky here with us,” and he handed the phone to me. On the other end of the line was a local man by the name of Billy McCollough who had called the center to get information about an upcoming trip he was making to the United States and to a place called Danville, Kentucky to investigate his family ties to a man by the name of Ephraim McDowell. “Had I heard of him?” It was a good trip, but we’re glad to be home. Grace & peace, Jim

Hands to Work, Hearts to God Our thanks this month go to all the committed and thoughtful members of the Memorial Committee who have served our church over the years to assure that those we have lost are remembered. The Memorial Committee handles all monetary donations given to the church in memory of loved ones. These donations are put into the Memorial Funds account. The committee is also responsible for making sure the names of all donors are recorded in the Memorial Gifts Book. The Memorial Committee receives and reviews requests for expenditures of Memorial Funds. Requests can come from any church committee or from the families of individuals in whose name gifts have been given. Most recently, the Memorial Committee has approved requests for funding the purchase of a new Godly Play piece HOLY WEEK (JERUSALEM) from funds given in memory of Lucy Williams. Another recent request asked for monies to help fund the new Memorial Garden. In the past funds have been used to purchase large equipment items for the Soup On Us program.

June 23, 2014 Dear Hope Springs Volunteer: A very belated thank you for all of your help with this year’s Hope Springs Yard Sale. Whether you drove trucks, sorted clothes, worked the check-out table, made a donation, or picked up donations, all were crucial jobs. We could not have done the yard sale without your help and every hour you volunteered added to the success. Our final numbers are in and we made $5,993.05. Because we have minimal expenses as well, this event is a win-win for everyone. Good, usable items go to others, we keep more trash and items out of landfills, and we are able to help those in need. We will now begin the process of sending out the grant information. If you have any suggestions for us for next year’s sale, please do not hesitate to let us know. Once again, thank you for all of your help. Sincerely, Patsi Trollinger Sarah Scott Hall Ann Young Jacob Raderer

Boyle County Community News Boyle County’s Agency for Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP), is sponsoring the creation of a local Heroin Task Force. The very rapid redevelopment of an old substance abuse problem (but with a new twist) has entered our community with an incredible cost to families, law enforcement and judicial system, and our health care providers. If you’d like to be part of a diverse community group that wants to address the problem before more lives are lost, please come to the first meeting of a Boyle County Heroin Task Force, at 8:30 AM, on August 22, at the Boyle County Health Department. For more info, contact Kathy Miles at [email protected]. Please mark your calendars for a day of service to our community, by joining in the Heart of Kentucky United Way Day of Action on September 17 at Millennium Park. To sign up, go to www.hkuw.org. Every year, the number of volunteers who are committed to helping their brothers and sisters in Boyle, Lincoln, Mercer, and Garrard counties grows, and the work done at Day of Action makes a huge difference. Be part of those who commit to “living united” and making our communi-ty a better place for all.

We have a way for you to be able to donate online to The Presbyterian Church of Danville! You can access our donation form at this link:

More Clean Water!

This is Angelina. She lives in the village of Tres Reyes. She is 7 years old, and has had to drink contaminated water all her life…. UNTIL last week, when your Living Waters for the World mission team brought a water purification system to her village. You’ll be hearing more about this in the weeks to come, but for now, the team wanted to share the joy of this accomplishment. Angelina and her whole community join us in saying THANK YOU for your support and prayers which made this possible. Gracias!

Godly Play is our Sunday School program based on an interpretation of Montessori religious education. It is more akin to spiritual direction than to what we generally think of as religious education. Children who turn 3 during the Fall are welcome to begin Godly Play in January. Teachers believe that all the children will have the best experience if children wait until they are 3 and new students all begin at the same time.

Home Builders “Dinner and Devotions” Small Groups

In its first year of existence, the Home Builders group experienced a great response to the meals and social events held on a monthly basis, and saw an explosion of participation by young adults and young families in our congregation. The group has grown so big, in fact, that Home Builders will be forming small Dinner and Devotions groups beginning this fall, and we want YOU to join us! The Home Builders Dinner and Devotions small groups will:

consist of 8-10 people meet 4 times between August and December join together for a meal and devotional discussion at each meeting have an appointed group leader to organize logistics and lead discussion be held in someone’s home

Childcare needs and arrangements will be handled by each group and their group leader. This Fall we will be

reading and discussing, “An Altar in the World” by Barbara Brown Taylor. We will look for altars everywhere we go as we learn to live with purpose, pay attention, slow down, and revere the world we live in.

We will kick off our Dinner and Devotions small groups on Sunday, August 24 at a potluck dinner at the church at 5 PM. You will meet the other members of your group, get connected with your group leader, and determine dates, location, and childcare for your four gatherings. Finally, in December we will close out the semester with an all-Home Builders chili supper and caroling!

If you would like to be a part of the Home Builders Dinner and Devotions small groups this fall, please contact Molly Boyd at [email protected] or (859)494-1457, or sign up in fellowship hall by Sunday, August 17.

Home Builders seeks to foster community in the church for those individuals who are in the home-building stage of life.

Whether you are just getting started in the working world, are single, dating, married, or have young children, if you identify with this stage in life we invite you to join us for fun and fellowship.

We need your help. If you would like to serve in some capacity we invite you to contact us. Help your church to continue serving our community, help us to continue growing, and help us to maintain and expand our service to the Lord. We need workers of all ages, talents, and backgrounds. We do have a specific need for volunteers with financial or business backgrounds. Also, if you would like to suggest someone who you feel would like to help that would be welcome too. You can contact Mike Tetirick at [email protected] or 859-319-9382.
