It is scary to think how our suburbs have fallen prey to

an influx of foreign drug peddlers who use our st reets and suburbs to merchant i l legal substances.

In fact it is a demand from the very people in our suburbs for these narcotics that fuel the trade and this is the most worrying concern.On the night of Wednesday, October 19, Benoni SAPS members with the aid of members from the Kempton Park SAPS and the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department’s (EMPD) Intervention Unit, an undercover unit, conducted a stake out and raid at a notorious house, where drug dealing was believed to have been taking place, in Daffodil Street, Farrarmere.According to Clive Patterson, Farrarmere Community Precinct (FCP) chairman and a member of the Benoni Community Police Forum (CPF), alleged drug dealing has been carrying on at the property for a very long time now and information regarding the suspicious activities there had been passed on by the community to the SAPS,who started monitoring the activities at the premises.On Wednesday night, between about 7.30pm and 8.30pm, police noticed that activity around the house was very busy

and that drug dealing was clearly taking place right under their noses.Police quickly pounced on the alleged dealer who was clearly not going to accept arrest – the suspect consumed and swallowed large quantities of pills and is believed to have overdosed on the narcotics.Within twenty minutes from the initial police entry the foreign suspect had swallowed the pills and could not be saved by the paramedics on scene.He was declared dead, prompting an inquest docket to be opened at the Benoni Police Station.Patterson said: “A big thank you to the police who tackled the problem on the premises – it is great to see that when the community complains about suspicious activities the police do respond and do take action.“We congratulate and thank them for their excellent follow up on the complaints.”Although this case is a big step in the right direction to quelling the drug trade on our streets we can be certain that other pushers will be waiting in the wings ready to distribute and sell more illegal substances to the people in our community.If you have any information regarding suspected drug houses in your area or other strange activity do not hesitate to contact the police on 10111 or the community control room on 0861 425 493.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the community for their overwhelming response to our appeal to ‘Sponsor a

Pensioner’ – zero, nada, zilch – sad to say, not even one.While the Precincts and our management company, CMS, already sponsor a high number of our elderly citizens, we are just unable to subsidise everyone, hence our appeal. At least we tried.We know times are tough financially for many of our community members, but not everyone.Talking to some of our community members recently I was astonished to be told how many people park in ‘disabled’ parking

bays at shopping centres, just so that they can park nearer the door and don’t have to walk too far. When approached, the majority of these illegal parkers just shrugged their shoulders and really couldn’t care less if legitimate disabled people were unable to make use these parking bays. No sign of shame whatsoever.I’m quite sure these people would be the first to complain if they were disabled and couldn’t use these parking areas. And, of course, they get away with it because nobody wants to ‘make a scene’.What a disgrace, and what a fine example they are showing to the younger generation.

“Potential homebuyers” rob house

On Monday, October 24, a woman in Reguit Street, Ravensklip, Boksburg, was the target of wily criminals when she fell for a very old trick.The woman’s house is up for sale and the crafty criminals saw this as their opportunity to strike.Dressed in smart clothing, three well-spoken suspects arrived in a red vehicle while the woman was outside the property and asked if they could have a look at the house.The homeowner did not hesitate to give them permission to go through the house, although failing to realise that a fourth suspect driving a red vehicle (model unknown) would also become involved.Two of the four suspects distracted the

woman while the third suspect made his way through the house and helped himself to jewellery, Krugerrands and a laptop with the help of the driver (the fourth suspect) who helped load the goods into the car.The victim only realised that she had been robbed when she re-entered her house.Fortunately the suspects were not armed and there were no injuries.We urge all residents who come across a similar situation to be vigilant and to report anything suspicious to the police or the community control room on 0861 425 493.Remember that not all criminals wear dark clothing and black balaclavas these days. Even a well-dressed posh sounding person could be out to get you or your property.

Two men were apprehended in Morehill Close on Wednesday, October 18.The men were discovered by security personnel in the enclosure and now Benoni Police are investigating a possible connection between the arrested suspects and the brutal murder of 75-year-old Hein Euler in the enclosure in early October.Erika (71), his wife, was badly beaten and assaulted and had to be hospitalised following the incident.The men allegedly matched the description of the two suspects involved in the Carina Avenue murder but further police work and investigations are underway to positively link the men to the case.WO Assie van Aswegen, Benoni SAPS communications officer, told The PCN that investigating officers were still awaiting the fingerprint results before the men could be attached to the murder.

been walking around Pomona X3 in the early evenings as a family – with dog in tow.These are the times you

realise that the majority of the residents of Pomona X3 really do love their houses and gardens.The fragrance of Jasmine a couple of weeks back and the yesterday, today & tomorrow bushes in most gardens make a fabulous backdrop to a peaceful suburb . Flowers are all blooming, the grass is well kept and the cooing doves start to settle in their nests for the night, interspersed with barking dogs as we make our way down the road (dog now leading the way).Then we turn the corner and get to Vlei Street! Vlei street is the one with a couple of cluster developments and a large amount of open

“veld” - which seems to be an open invitation to these wonderful residents, who care so much for their houses and gardens, to dump anything not needed!Literally anything from garden refuse, to household rubbish, to building rubble is dumped along the side of the road. What seems to be strange is that directly across the road from a lot of the building rubble heaps, is a beautiful newly built wall or a room recently added. It’s pretty disgusting and a real eyesore in our beautiful suburb. I have yet to understand how fellow residents think it’s OK to dump anything anywhere, especially in their own suburb, but also that many of them must drive past it daily and either not even notice anything wrong with dumping rubbish alongside a road, or have become oblivious to it.A real negative to potential homeowners in our beautiful, peaceful “utopia” – come on everyone, lets cleanup our surroundings! - Wendy

Fawkes Day, Christmas and Old Year’s Eve upon us the Benoni SPCA wishes to bring to the attention of the community that setting off fireworks in residential areas is illegal and that

people caught using fireworks could face a hefty fine according to The Explosives Act No. 26 of 1956.This law applies nationwide without exceptions.Section 10.34 of the Act states that it is unlawful to discharge any firework in any building, or any public thoroughfare or in any public place or resort without written permission of the local authority.Section 10.35 relates to public displays of fireworks and states that no person may do so on any premises without the written permission of the Chief Inspector of Explosives (commonly known as “having a permit”).This written permission will stipulate conditions and any non-compliance with them is a criminal offence.This Act is enforced by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and not by the SPCA.Please report any offences to your nearest SAPS, giving as many details as possible.To ensure that your pets are safe during these times follow this handy guide made possible by the National Council of SPCAs:

• Ensure all your animals have identification.• If possible, stay home with them if you suspect fireworks fiends are about.• If you cannot be home with them, keep them inside and preferably in a room such as the

kitchen where the windows are higher and more difficult for your pet to jump through.• Attempt to mask any noise by drawing curtains and playing calming music at a reasonable

volume.• Put familiar and comforting things around your pets such as toys, baskets etc.• Provide them with something to do such as giving your dog a chewy bone or lots of catnip

or a catnip toy for cats.• If your pets do react badly to fireworks then seek professional advice from your veterinarian.• Ensure that your pets have a hearty and nutritious meal around nightfall as this will make

Take a stand against illegal dumping

Democratic Alliance (DA) Ward Councillor in Ward 28, Mary Goby, has appealed to residents to help stamp

out rampant illegal dumping in the ward by reporting the problem. “Residents are requested to call me or alternatively to contact the Ekurhuleni Metro’s Solid Waste department on 011-999-6829. If you should observe illegal dumping taking place please try to obtain the car registration number of the culprit and if possible take a photo,” Goby said.She explained that illegal dumping was an ongoing problem throughout Ward 28, and added that incidences of dumping had even occurred at the Conservancy in Lakefield. “Illegal dumping is not only an eyesore, which impacts negatively on property prices, but creates an ideal environment for vermin such

as rats, while sharp objects, used condoms and other similar items may pose a very real threat to children who do not know to steer clear,” she said. “Culprits should take note that they could be fined up to R2 000 for their illegal activities.”Clr Goby has been trying for some time now to address the situation and has, amongst others, alerted the Ekurhuleni Metro’s Solid Waste Department of the problem, personally handed out waste-collection calendars to residents and requested residents to be on the lookout for offenders. “In addition, no-dumping signs have been erected in a number of areas, but this appears to have little or no effect,” she said. “Everything from building rubble, furniture, household appliances, garden rubble, car parts, bottles to used nappies, get dumped. This despite the fact that there are refuse collection sites that cater to specialised refuse, and that the municipality does collect household waste, albeit irregularly at times.”“There is no reason why residents should have to live under these conditions. “Let’s work together and make Ward 28 a better

place to live.”

Evidence of illegal dumping in the open area near the old Settlers building in Klein Street, Lakefield. Dumped building rubble, garden rubble and other refuse has been a major headache for Clr Mary Goby who has been desperately trying to prevent illegal dumping from occurring throughout her ward.

Several news and weather broadcasts have warned people of a heat wave over the northern region of South Africa. It is said that some areas may even reach as high as 40 degrees Celsius.Important facts to consider are how to prevent heat exhaustion and how to deal with heat related emergencies. It is especially during extreme heat conditions that paramedics are called out to various incidents relating to excessive heat or exhaustion.

ER24 would like to remind the public of the following:• Stay well hydrated and stay out of the direct sun during midday.• Ensure that you wear appropriate clothing and sun cream when

outside.• Should you partake in outdoor activities, make sure that you have

adequate resting sessions and keep hydrated at all times.• Do not consume excessive amounts of alcohol.• Ensure that there is appropriate adult supervision when children are

swimming.• Babies and the elderly are more likely to suffer from heatstroke due

to inadequate thermal regulation systems – Ensure that they are monitored closely during this time.

• It is also important that you do not leave your children or animals in a vehicle even with the windows open. Often people focus their attention on other humans but we should also keep our pets in mind. Ensure that they have a cool place to rest and enough clean water.

During severe heat stroke or exhaustion you may notice any of the following signs or symptoms:

• Severe headache• Weakness or disorientation• Nausea or vomiting• Muscle cramps• Severe thirst

It is important that a person with these signs and symptoms be closely monitored as it could result in the patient losing consciousness or having seizures which could result in death. Persisting signs and symptoms of any of the above may need immediate medical attention. Rather seek help immediately. A person who is not a resident of the ward but who is registered on the voter’s roll of Ekurhuleni may be nominated by a sector, should that person be able to demonstrate in writing that he/she has an interest in that ward.Residents who are interested in running for election for their ward committee first need to obtain a nomination form by contacting their councillor or by going to the nearest Municipal Customer Care Centre to obtain a form.
