A business strategist, he specializes in leading fi rms through the start-up process and turning around distressed businesses—quickly. He received his MBA from the Lubin School of Business at Pace University. He earned a Masters of Science in Strategic Communications from Columbia University.

BRUCE LYONS is a former President of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and past Chair of the American Bar Association’s Criminal Justice Section. His law practice is devoted to all aspects of criminal defense, including application of forensic science, at both state and federal trial levels. During the past 30 years he has testifi ed before the U.S. House of Representatives and litigated in both state and federal courts. He earned his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Miami.

DAVID ROTHMAN graduated from the University of Florida School of Law and worked as an assistant state attorney for the next three years. In 1980, he and John Thornton, now a circuit court judge, opened the law fi rm which now bears the name Rothman & Associates, P.A. The fi rm, practicing almost exclusively criminal defense in state and federal courts, has two associates, Jeanne T. Melendez and Joaquin E. Padilla. Former partners include the Honorable Federico Moreno, Chief Judge of the Southern District of Florida and Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court Judge Kevin Emas. He is a Past President of FACDL. Since 1996, he has taught litigation skills as an adjunct professor of law at the University of Miami School of Law. He has been listed in Best Lawyers in America, Super Lawyers, Legal Elite and Top Lawyers.

ROY BLACK, senior partner of Black, Srebnick, Kornspan & Stumpf, P.A., has handled hundreds of cases nationally, representing high-profi le clients like Rush Limbaugh, Kelsey Grammar and William Kennedy Smith. He has been a commentator on legal issues for The Today Show and Good Morning America. The author of Black’s Law, he has taught at the University of Miami School of Law for over 30 years. He received the Nelson Poynter Award for voluntary representation of prisoners on Florida’s death row. Prior to his private practice, he served fi ve years as a public defender in Miami-Dade County. He achieved the highest score on The Florida Bar Exam after graduating from the University of Miami School of Law, where he also earned his bachelor’s degree.

DENIS M. DEVLAMING earned a B.A. from the Ohio State University and a J.D. from Stetson University College of Law. As an assistant state attorney, he prosecuted in the Sixth Judicial Circuit from 1972 through 1975. He then started his own law practice in Clearwater and has specialized in criminal defense. He is a Past President of FACDL. He is President of First Step, Inc., a non-profi t organization dedicated to helping needy men and women who are on probation. He is an adjunct professor at Stetson College of Law in St. Petersburg, a past adjunct professor at the University of South Florida, and a guest lecturer for St. Petersburg College. He has been inducted into Who’s Who In American Law and included in Best Lawyers In America.

CAROLYN ELEFANT is an attorney in Washington D.C. with the Law Offi ces of Carolyn Elefant, focusing on renewable energy, appeals and select federal litigation, including federal eminent domain and Section 1983 matters. She is creator of MyShingle.com, the longest running blog on solo and small fi rm practice and author of Solo by Choice: How to Be the Lawyer You Always Wanted to Be, as well as co-author of Social Media for Lawyers: The Next Frontier. She is a graduate of Cornell Law School.

RICHARD HERSCH has practiced criminal defense in Miami since 1980. A graduate of University of Florida Law School (and FSU undergrad), he is the sole remaining partner in Hersch & Talisman, P.A. He has lectured extensively for the Bar and FACDL on evidence, traffi c and DUI topics since 1985. He produced FACDL’s Blood Breath &Tears seminar for seven years and authored “DUI Notes” for The Defender magazine for six years. He is a licensed pilot, single engine, instrument rated; a scuba enthusiast; a snowboarder; and the father of two daughters, both staunch opponents of capital and corporal punishment. CARLOS J. RUGA is a certifi ed public accountant serving as branch auditor with The Florida Bar. He has served as auditor for the Miami and Fort Lauderdale’s offi ces, which covered Palm Beach, Broward, Dade and Monroe Counties and the 20th Circuit. His work with The Florida Bar includes audits of attorney’s trust account for cause, and any fi nancial matter that involves attorneys such as personal injury, probate matters, real estate fraud, mortgage fraud, etc. He has performed at least 1,600 audits has testifi ed at least 300 times in referee hearings and numerous times in grievance committee hearings.

ARLENE KALISH SANKEL has been Chief Branch Discipline Counsel for The Florida Bar’s Miami Branch since 1998. Her duties have included management and supervisory responsibilities. She received her B.A. from New York University, and a J.D. from Nova Law School. She has been an adjunct instructor of Advanced Legal Writing at St. Thomas Law School.

PATRICIA A. SEITZ hears both criminal and civil cases as a United States District Court Judge for the Southern District of Florida. She has been involved in judicial administration and served as Chief Legal Counsel to the Drug Czar in the White House Offi ce of National Drug Control Policy. For 22 years she was a partner in Steel, Hector & Davis, LLP. She was the fi rst woman elected President of The Florida Bar. Her work promoting the status of women earned her the Judge Mattie Bell Davis Award and the Barkett Outstanding Achievement Award.

JEFF WEINER, a former president of NACDL, has practiced as a criminal defense attorney since 1974. He has argued trials and appeals throughout Florida and 25 other states, including the United States Supreme Court. He is a recipient of NACDL’s highest honor, the Robert C. Heeney Award, for his representation of fellow lawyers on behalf of NACDL. He recently won in a jury trial in the Florida Keys in which his client was charged with boating under the infl uence resulting in a death. The defendant had confessed to several people that he was driving the boat at the time of the accident. With the expert testimony of Dr. Chris Van Ee and the extensive use of demonstrative evidence, a verdict of not guilty was returned, the jury having been convinced that the defendant was not operating the vessel at the time of the accident.
