The Pozos ArT ProjecT, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation founded in Houston, Texas. The mission of theproject is to offer quality instruction in the visual arts and shared cultural experiences to children and young adults, regardless of their eco-nomic means, from Texas and Mexico.

Empezando agosto de 2007, hace cerca de 4 años, cuando este catálogo iba a la imprenta un grupo de niños se reunieron en nuestra casa en Mineral de Pozos, Guanajuato. Nosotros habíamos corrido

la voz por todo el pueblo de que estábamos planeando empezar a enseñar talleres de fotografía y arte para niños de Pozos. Nuestro hijo Max, que entonces tenía 10 años, su unió al grupo. El sobresalía como el único rubio en la fotografía del grupo de niños que tomamos ese día [pagina opuesta].Estábamos muy entusiasmados y llenos de esperanza por nuestro proyecto ese día, aunque inciertos exactamente de cómo procederíamos o como seriamos capaces de afrontar las oportunidades que esperábamos brindar a los niños.

Gracias a nuestros fundadores patrocinadores nuestro proyecto empezó inmediatamente. Un año después publicamos nuestro primer catálogo de arte de nuestro taller y dos museos—uno en México y uno en Estados Unidos—donde se expuso el trabajo de nuestros niños.

En verano de 2011, el proyecto de arte de Pozos ofreció talleres por el cuarto año consecutivo. Publicamos este catálogo como lo hemos hecho cada año, para celebrar y conservar el extraordinario arte que los niños de Pozos continúan produciendo.

Estamos agradecidos con todos aquellos que generosamente han apoyado nuestro proyecto incluyendo a la diócesis local de la Iglesia Católica en Pozos, quien nos ha concedido el uso del lugar que ha servido como nuestro estudio de arte por los 3 años pasados. In early August of 2007, just over four years ago as this catalog goes to press, a crowd of kids gathered in our home in Mineral de Pozos, Guanajuato. We had put out the word around town that we were planning to begin

teaching workshops in photography and studio art for the children of Pozos. Our son Max, then ten years old, joined the crowd. He stands out as the only blond in the group picture we took of the kids that day [opposite page]. We were full of hope and excitement for our project that day, though uncertain of exactly how we would proceed or how we would be able to afford the opportunities that we hoped to give the children.

Thanks to our founding sponsors, our project took off immediately. A year later, we published our first catalog of art from our workshops, and two museums—one in Mexico and one in the United States—were featuring exhibitions of our kids’ work.

In the summer of 2011, the Pozos Art Project, offered workshops for the fourth consecutive year. We publish this catalog, as we have each year, to celebrate and to preserve the remarkable art that the children of Pozos continue to produce.

We are grateful to all of those who have generously supported our project, including the local diocese of the Catholic church in Pozos, which has granted us the use of the space that has served as our art studio for the past three years. Donations, including those given through Kickstarter.com, have allowed us to provide participating children with quality art supplies, film-based and digital cameras, traditional darkrooms, and a digital laboratory.

The following pages present a selection of art in a wide variety of media made by the participants, teaching assistants, and instructors in our 2011 summer workshops. We continue to celebrate the originality and quality of the art that our kids create, and, even though our project is a small one, we embrace the good will that we foster between our two countries.

On a cloudy afternoon in July, our group of twelve piled into two vehicles and headed north from Pozos on a seven-hour journey through the Huasteca region of Mexico. Our destination was the

town of Xilitla, located in the dense jungle that covers the mountain slopes in the northeastern corner of the state of San Luis Potosí. Xilitla is not on the way to anywhere else of much importance. There are no beaches and no colonial architecture, so relatively few tourists put Xilitla on their itinerary. Only ninety miles (as the crow flies) separate Xilitla from the Gulf of Mexico, yet driving there from the coast—or from most anywhere else—can take a day or more, given the round about route that is required to get there. Yet any drive to Xilitla is likely to offer spectacular views, as the highway winds upward through dramatic passes and isolated mountain villages.

Mountain slopes covered in dense foliage surround Xilitla. Springs burst out of the hillsides, flowing down through rocky fields. Signs along the highway point travelers toward waterfalls, mountain springs, and scenic vistas. As we arrived, the rainy season had just begun, and recent downpours had fed the rivers, creating torrents of water rushing down the hillsides along the road.

Coffee and papaya are the products for which Xilitla is best known, but most of those who travel the winding mountain roads come to visit Xilitla’s one truly unique attraction: the fantasy gardens known as Las Pozas. Built in the 1960’s and 70’s by the wealthy, eccentric Englishman Edward James, Las Pozas has been described as his “Surrealist Xanadu.” The natural centerpiece of his creation is the river itself, which streams through the park, dropping in a series of waterfalls, each forming a pool at its base; hence, Las Pozas, “the pools”. James spent millions of dollars and employed hundreds of masons, artisans, and local craftsmen to construct his whimsical concrete sculptures in the jungle, all connected by a labyrinth of pathways covering over twenty acres. On our first days in Xilitla, the river roared through Las Pozas with such force and fury that we could only approach it with great caution.

Our home base was Casa Caracol, a cluster of teepees and bungalows with a dated but charming atmosphere, set along the river at the edge of Las Pozas. For seven days, we went out each day to explore, photograph, draw, and paint all around Xilitla. We swam in the rivers, and we ventured through deep, dark, watery caves. We explored every corner of Las Pozas. We photographed the bustling streets of the town, and we ventured high into the mountains above Xilitla to witness a million swallows flying out of their cavernous home. In all, we found Xilitla and its environs to be yet another truly magical part of this continually amazing country.

En el mes de julio, durante una tarde nublada, nuestro grupo de 12 nos metimos a 2 carros y nos dirigimos al norte de Pozos en un viaje de 7 horas a través de la Huasteca, región de México. Nuestro destino era

el pueblo de Xilitla, localizada en la densa jungla que cubre las faldas de las montañas en la esquina noreste del estado de San Luis Potosí. Xilitla no esta en el camino de algún lugar de gran importancia, no hay playas ni hay arquitectura colonial, así que solo algunos turistas ponen Xilitla en su itinerario. Solo 90 millas (en línea recta) separa a Xilitla del Golfo de México, aun manejando desde la costa—o casi desde cualquier lugar—puede tomarse un día o mas dando la vuelta alrededor de la ruta que es necesaria para llegar ahí.
