Key WordsConsciousness - the state of being conscious; awareness of one's own existence, sensations, thoughts, surroundings, etc.

Reflection - a fixing of the thoughts on something; careful consideration. A thought occurring in consideration or meditation.

Affirmation - the assertion that something exists or is true. Something that is affirmed; a statement or proposition that is declared to be true.

Optimism - a disposition or tendency to look on the more favorable side of events or conditions and to expect the most favorable outcome.

Self-esteem - a realistic respect for or favorable impression of oneself; self-respect.

Extra Credit Opportunity

Re-create the Rice Experiment and document the results for at least 15 days.

Documentation has to be through pictures or videos.

At the end write a reflective essay (3-4 paragraphs) about your experience with the experiment, results and your thoughts on it.

Transitive Verbs

An action verb is transitive if the receiver of the action is named in the sentence. The receiver of the

action is called the object of the verb.

Firemen pulled the child from the burning car.

After a long trip we finally reached Atlanta.

Before school I enjoy a good breakfast.

The sergeant ordered his troops to halt.

Intransitive Verbs

An action verb is intransitive if no receiver of the action is named in the sentence. An intransitive verb

does not have an object.

The young colt galloped alongside the fence.

My sister swam in the 100-meter freestyle event.

All the files burned in the fire.

Receiving an enthusiastic welcome, the speaker grinned broadly.

Work In Class

Pair up with a classmate.

Choose a short story from your textbook, read and look for transitive and intransitive verbs in sentences.

Look for (5) transitive verbs and (5) intransitives verbs. Write the sentences on a separate piece of paper, INDIVIDUALLY, to hand-in. 10 points.

Homework

Write a paragraph on the story you read in class.

Describe the plot, characters and what you think of the story.

Underline any transitive or transitive verbs you use.
