To express religious devotion, people would go on a pilgrimage to a special religious place (such as Jerusalem. If they could not travel so far…they would go somewhere local.)
Thomas Beckett was an archbishop; they travel to the place where he had been martyred, to seek blessings.
Vocabulary
Mystery Plays (“trade/craft” plays) – Plays where common people from various guilds (unions, example bakers guild) would dress up like characters in the Old and New Testament, often starting with the creation of the world and ending with the last judgment of Jesus.
