NATURAL GAS FOR TRANSPORTALONGSIDE HEATING AND COOKING, NATURAL GASIS ALSO USED IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY AS ANENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY MOTOR FUEL.

There are almost 100,000 natural gas vehicles registered in Germany, and that number is increasing fast: In 2013, Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority registered 7,800 new natural gas vehicles – 50 % more than in the previous year. With over 900 natural gas filling stations around Germany, the infrastruc-ture is in place.

Natural gas vehicles’ nitrogen-oxide emissions are up to 95 % lower than those produced by diesel vehicles. Harmful fine dust particles are also a thing of the past, which allows modern natural gas vehicles to meet stringent emissions standards and travel unhindered throughout inner-city low-emissions zones.

Natural gas drive technology is tried and tested and is widely avail-able, giving it significant advantage over vehicles that use other technologies, such as electric vehicles. Germany has a nationwide network of over 900 filling stations, and neighbouring European countries also have well-established filling-station networks.

Meanwhile, the European Union’s clean-fuel strategy calls for a pan-European network of filling stations with a maximum distance of 150 km between CNG filling stations and 400 km between LNG filling stations. And its LNG Blue Corridors project has assigned EUR 8 million towards constructing LNG filling stations and fitting heavy-duty vehicles with LNG tanks.

GAZPROM has long been committed the natural-gas-for-transport segment, and its German subsidiary GAZPROM Germania plans to be operating 35 natural gas filling stations by 2015. GAZPROM Germania is also collaborating with its subsidiary VEMEX on addi-tional filling stations in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

“By investing in environmentally-friendly natural gas filling sta-tions, GAZPROM Germania is making an important contribution to the development of green transport in Germany and throughout Europe”, says Senior Managing Director Vyacheslav Krupenkov.

GAZPROM Germania is also collaborating with the automotive industry on projects aimed at better establishing LNG on the road.

One such project saw GAZPROM and its international partners launch Europe’s first LNG buses in Olsztyn, Poland. These eco-friendly buses are also due to enter service in Warsaw in 2015,and more such projects are underway.

Better vehicles: With ranges of to 550 km and strong engine performance, today’s natural gas vehicles offer comfort and convenience. There are already more than 20 different vehicles available that are driven by natural gas as factory standard. For more information, visit www.erdgas-mobil.de.

ECO-FRIENDLY AND READILY AVAILABLEDRIVING A NATURAL GAS VEHICLE IS KINDER TO THEENVIRONMENT THAN MANY OF THE ALTERNATIVES.NATURAL GAS VEHICLES PRODUCE UP TO 25 %FEWER CO2 EMISSIONS THAN PETROL VEHICLES,AND AROUND 20 % FEWER THAN DIESEL VEHICLES.

Alongside their eco-friendliness, natural gas vehicles also offer a variety of other advantages:

– COST-EFFICIENCYGo twice the distance: Using natural gas as a motor fuel is not only great for the environment, but also kind on the wallet. A full tank of natural gas costs up to 1/3 less than a full tank of diesel and as little as half as much as a full tank of petrol. A CNG compact vehicle will travel 220 km with EUR 10.00 worth of fuel, while the same vehicle with a petrol engine will travel only 103 km.

Natural gas also saves money on taxes. Thanks to their outstanding environmental performance, natural gas vehicles have been granted a lower energy tax rate, and their low CO

2 emissions also mean less motor

vehicle tax. The German federal government’s decision to continue applying the lower tax rate beyond 2018 will see natural gas continue to be more cost-effective than petrol or diesel in the long term.

– SAFETYNatural gas vehicles are also very safe. The latest tests show that their fuel tanks are accident-proof and resistant to both heat and pressure. In emergencies, the natural gas can be released safely. And unlike LPG vehicles, CNG vehicles meet safety standards that allow them to enter underground car parks.

– POWERDespite their drastically lower emissions, natural gas vehicles offer top performance without sacrificing comfort. The latest twin-turbocharged engines produce up to 150 PS and top speeds of over 200 km/h.

Research and development has also made its mark on the vehicles’ range; larger tanks and optimized engines mean fewer refuelling stops,

and a single fill is now enough to travel over 450 km in a modern natural gas vehicle.

– VERSATILITYAuto manufacturers have long recognized the potential of natural gas for transport, and now feature a variety of attractive natural gas vehicles in their product ranges – such Audi with its Audi A3 g-tron, Audi’s first natural gas vehicle, which it launched in 2014. The Volkswagen Group now offers over 20 models of natural gas vehicle. For a current overview of the natural gas vehicles available, visit www.erdgas-mobil.de.

— AVAILABILITYWith around 900 natural gas filling stations around Germany, the infra-structure is in place. And with GAZPROM’s more than 35 Tm3 of natural gas reserves – the richest reserves in the world – there’s no chance of natural gas vehicles running out of fuel in the future; these reserves are large enough to meet demand reliably for decades to come.

You can use our fuel cost calculator to calculate the annual mileage at which a natural gas vehicle will save you money. For more information, visit www.gazprom-germania.de/kraftstoffrechner.

The VW Scirocco R-Cup is held over six weekends as part of the Deutsche Tourenwagen-Meisterschaft (DTM). The starter grid features a mixture of up-and-coming talent and motorsports legends, and in the past has included extreme sportsman Felix Baumgartner, racing legend Hans-Joachim “Strietzel” Stuck, and Formula 1 world champion Damon Hill. The race offers a unique combination of speed and eco-friendliness and attracts average viewership of around 70,000.
