It is packed with new wines as well as old favourites, and we believe is our strongest list to date. We were delighted to receive the International Wine Challenge’s award for B O R D E A U X M E R C H A N T O F T H E

Y E A R in 2016, due in part to the strength of our en primeur campaign, but also for the wide range of large formats and older vintages we offer. There are plenty of large formats in this list, with a quick reference of where to find them in the ‘List at a Glance’ on page 38. And in reaction to increasing demand for half bottles, we have also included a quick reference for these.

The list is put together afresh every year, and we hope you will find some exciting new regions and producers. The list caters for a wide range of tastes, from everyday drinking wines up to something really special, like Louis Roederer Cristal 2007. The wines chosen for this list are all ready to drink now, although many have further cellaring potential as well.

Whilst every wine on the list thoroughly deserves its place, we must admit to having personal favourites. ‘The Essential List’ on page 20 will point you to the wines that members of the team here at Goedhuis just can’t do without.

If you have any questions or would like to place an order please send an email to [email protected] or call us on +44 (0)20 7793 7900. A full list of contact details can be found on page 37.

This collection includes some of our best-selling wines, and as proud ambassadors of Louis Roederer we are delighted to offer a wide range of their cuvées from the consistently delicious Brut Premier up to their prestige cuvée, Cristal 2007.

English Sparkling Wine is enjoying a boom in popularity as the wines produced each year increase in quality and character. We have

chosen two of our favourite estates, Nyetimber and Gusbourne, which we think showcase the best of the best.

We have included a range of levels and styles, from a dangerously drinkable Prosecco, through to the Champagne Grandes Marques with their signature non-vintage cuvées, up to the most sought after and celebrated vintage releases, including Pol Roger Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2004.

Amongst these is also our house Champagne, Paul Goerg. This mini co-operative in the Côte des Blancs is the result of eight small growers pooling resources, and producing Champagne of excellent quality at a very forgiving price tag. The Blanc de Blancs is surely unbeatable at the price.

We have been working with Elena and Luca at Bianca Vigna for several years and the quality of their Prosecco highlights why these stunning sparklers have become a firm Goedhuis favourite. Soft and creamy with notes of fresh almond, pear and apple, it is refined and pure, everything a good Prosecco should be. It finishes with lemon zest and mineral notes. Delicious.

After a long search we selected our house Champagne last year, and continue to be delighted with the approachable, expressive style of the Paul Goerg wines. This fine blend of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir benefits from 3 years sur lattes ageing to allow the Chardonnay to express itself truly. Gentle lemon colour, with open brioche aromas which follow through into the palate to give a creamy citrus freshness on the finish.

The 2009 vintage forms the base of this outstanding Blanc de Blancs from the 1er Cru vineyards of Vertus. Brilliant, bright lemon colour, this balances citrus fruits, with flavours of rich tea biscuits and Jersey cream. A very pure style, with length, breadth and complexity.

A classic blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Bright golden colour, this is a really classy example of English sparkling wine. With pronounced nutty aromas it is a weighted and intense style. This coats the mouth with tremendous breadth. Rich and full, balanced with lots of freshness on the finish. A great ambassador for English wines.

Favoured by Winston Churchill and with a huge UK fan base, this lively, appealing dry non-vintage is Chardonnay dominated and extremely consistent. Three years’ ageing adds complexity, with wonderfully creamy bubbles. Fresh and elegant.

This classic blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay is deeply structured for a non-vintage cuvée. Brilliant golden straw colour, it possesses a lovely weight of fruit without being overpowering. A wine which fills the mouth focusing on its broad fruit flavours. Its complexity on the finish reflects an additional period of bottle age which provides added length and class.

This acclaimed Champagne house remains a family run operation, and consistently delivers one of the very best non-vintage blends, with a high proportion of Pinot Noir. This has a rich, creamy consistency with a lovely lemon finish. A small proportion is matured in oak cask, and the wine spends 3 years on lees before disgorgement. This ageing process, combined with a high proportion of reserve wine in the final blend, gives this wine excellent complexity and definition. With a generous dosage of 10g/l this is a sumptuous, plush style of Champagne.

The Blanc de Blancs has been this Kent estate’s most awarded wine to date, and the 2012 is extraordinarily good. This is such a sophisticated expression of Chardonnay, which is well known for being the Champagne grape most capable of showing the savoury aspect of autolytic ageing. The wine has spent 36 months on its lees, and as a result the wine shows a complex interplay of buttered toast and brioche notes with citrus and apple character, wrapped around a vivacious acidity and a creamy mousse. Outstanding.

Lime yellow colour. Beautifully fresh with pure citrus fruit aromas and hints of clementines. A delicious Champagne, with a delicate mousse balancing charm with breadth of flavours. This is an extremely precise, taut vintage Champagne, with a long, persistent finish of arresting finesse. Notes of creamy lemon curd and white flowers on the nose lead to an elegant intensity on the palate. At under £50 a bottle this represents excellent value for a Grande Marque vintage Champagne.

The most elegant of all pink Champagnes, this is everything that a great rosé should be. The delicate pink colour is supported by gentle aromas of light strawberries and red fruits. In the palate, it has beautifully open red fruit flavours, with a gentle freshness and crisp acidity. A very appealing open style and perfect for lifting the spirits!

Grande Cuvée is in the words of Remy Krug a “multi vintage” always containing the produce of at least 4 excellent vintages, and usually more – aged in small oak barrels of 205 litres, this indulgent Champagne is full flavoured, with toasty notes, acacia, and a very long finish.

Light pale straw colour, with very refined consistent mousse. The initial aroma is hugely subtle, with gentle floral aromas, white peaches and pears and a touch of fresh almonds. In the mouth the wine has a superb breadth and feeling of texture which is such a hallmark of this great cuvée. A very tightly knit wine, approachable but still retaining a real feeling of youth, despite its 9 years of age, and has a fine mineral drive. It is a wine of great depth, and broad nutty layers come through on the finish. This is a very appealing vintage indeed for Cristal, fully justifying its great reputation.

Bright lemon yellow colour. On the nose there is an abundance of fresh brioche and subtle characteristics of toasted almonds. In the palate, there is an immediate impact of fullness and texture, with a delicious feel of fresh cream and tremendous purity. This wine, despite its obvious weight of fruit, has amazing balance and harmony, a beautifully refined and yet persistent mousse, leaving the final sensation of flavour, fruit, brioche and jersey cream, and remaining totally fresh throughout the palate. Absolutely delicious, a very special cuvée indeed.

This section includes some longstanding Goedhuis favourite everyday whites. Largely unmasked by oak, these Sauvignon Blancs, Chardonnays, Muscadets and Rieslings et al. capture the fresh characteristics of their appellations. Both 2014 and 2015 were excellent white vintages across Europe, particularly in France. The 2014s have crisp citrus notes with vibrant acidity, whilst the 2015s have riper tones of tropical fruit balanced by bright acidity.

Their primary fruit characters make the 2014s and 2015s ideal for early drinking, and their youthful zestiness and approachability mark them out as perfect aperitif wines. Some choice examples from 2013 and 2012 have begun to develop more nuanced flavours, most perfectly demonstrated in the magnums of Riesling from one of Germany’s finest producers, Dönnhoff.

In all these wines, cool climates have resulted in modest levels of alcohol at perfect ripeness, so that fruit purity and vibrant acidity sing out. It is incidentally the perfect section for our own Goedhuis Bourgogne Blanc. Made by Jean-Philippe Fichet it is fresh and bright with a crisp finish: ideal for kitchen suppers.

The Côte de Beaune is famed for the great villages of Chassagne Montrachet, Puligny Montrachet and Meursault, which are capable of producing wines of incredible depth and often power as well. The Meursaults are the broadest and creamiest in style; Puligny produces wines with a little more drive and minerality due to its stonier soil base; and Chassagne’s wines are rich, nutty and age extraordinarily well.

And not to be missed are the other villages of this unique region, which can offer tremendous value and character. These include a St Aubin and a rare white Savigny lès Beaune. Further north are some fuller Premier and Grand Cru Chablis, which abundantly reward the more adventurous taster seeking top quality and exceptional value in Burgundy. This is also where you will find the often overlooked southern appellations

of the Côte Chalonnaise and Mâconnais; whilst a little less powerful, these wines have stunningly open, tropical fruit flavours.

Nearly all the wines have been vinified in oak and aged for 6–10 months in cask before bottling. However, each possesses true individuality, reflecting the uniqueness of their origins and the style of the grower behind the wine.

Rabourcé is the most well-known of the Rully 1ers Crus, and in 2014 this wine is an absolute gem. The coastline running from Marseille via Cannes and Nice to Monaco produces wines to perfectly suit the region’s image: fun, frivolous and yet also hugely classy. We have selected four of our favourite dry, elegant expressions of Provençal rosé.

The grape varieties of the Rhône valley – Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault – lend themselves superbly to making forward early-drinking rosé wines. They are delicate in colour, full of lovely summer fruit flavours, with a subtle bite of freshness, and the light aroma of wild garrigue herbs echoing those which grow on the rocky hillsides.

They are the perfect wines to drink as an aperitif in the lunchtime sun or in the evening warmth. And in fact, despite their association with the summer sunshine, their layered flavours and fine structure make them suitable for drinking all year round, whatever the weather.

The words ‘Coeur de Grain’ are printed on the label – only the heart of the berry is used; i.e. only the purest and palest juice that yields under gentle pressing, with the remainder going into their second label ‘By Ott’. The resulting wine has a creamy, silky texture, restrained fruit and a hint of dried garrigue herbs. With no malolactic fermentation and vinification in concrete and stainless steel, the wine is as fresh, bright and thirst-quenching as its appearance suggests. Both the prettiest and most complex rosé from Provence.

As winner of Decanter Magazine’s Burgundy Specialist Wine Retailer for the past 2 years we are proud of our special affinity for the wines of this region. Pinot Noir is famed for making the most scented and aromatic red wines, with extraordinary purity of fruit. Stylistically within this group we have breadth and range.

The southerly vineyards of Mercurey in the Côte Chalonnaise produce beautifully accessible wines. The Côte de Beaune is about vibrancy and red cherry fruit flavours. This is never better reflected than in the wines of Volnay – so full of charm and style. In the north, as one heads up through the Côte de Nuits through Chambolle Musigny and Gevrey

Chambertin, the wines have denser wild fruit characters, building in concentration and structure. Honourable mention must also go to Burgundy’s other red grape: the crunchy, juicy Gamay of Beaujolais, as well as the award winning style of New Zealand Pinot Noir from Central Otago, of which there are two fine examples here.

Respected Chambolle Musigny vigneron Louis Boillot has employed his skills in Beaujolais, and the 2014 release is the maiden vintage of this new project. Having tasted across his range we decided that our favourite was the refined and supple Rouchaux, which is made from a 1.4ha parcel of 50 year old Gamay vines planted on granite soil in this famous Beaujolais cru. A smoky aromatic nose is followed by a lovely smooth palate where tender fruit is entwined with fine silky tannins, reminding you of its Burgundian influence. This refined wine avoids any sappiness or bubble-gum simplicity that lesser Beaujolais can show and instead is pure, fresh and elegant.

This accolade recognises the strength of our Bordeaux selection which boasts great choice across style and level, maturity and large formats.

Great Bordeaux, and in particular Cabernet Sauvignon, benefits from bottle age. And so we have ensured that Bordeaux Classics consists in

the majority of wines with five years’ age or more. This extra time in the cellar has allowed the powerful tannins to soften, and given the rich fruit an opportunity to express itself in full.

The key grape varieties in this section are Cabernet Sauvignon (power and structure), Cabernet

Franc (freshness), Merlot (sweetness and succulence), and Petit Verdot (boldness and breadth). The wines are a blend of some or all of these varieties, and they highlight the nuanced complexity that can be achieved by blending. If structure is what you are looking for, this is an excellent place to go.

In 2012 one of Pessac Léognan’s most celebrated estates, Ch Haut Bailly, bought the neighbouring property Ch Le Pape. As well as renovating the charming château they have applied their considerable skill in the vineyard and cellar, starting with the élevage of the 2011. The Mediterranean sunshine beats down on the vineyards, and late maturing red varieties achieve stunning ripeness, with peppery aromas and long, sumptuous structure. A selection of juicy Rhône wines highlight the succulent flavours of local grape varieties, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Carignan, combined with the white pepper spice of Syrah.

On into Italy and the most picturesque of viticultural regions: Tuscany, where Sangiovese is king. Brunello and Chianti epitomise all that is smooth, rich and spicy, with firm acidity, grainy tannins, and robust savoury fruit. It was high time we had an accessible but quintessential Barolo on the list, and Giacomo Fenocchio won us over.

The list culminates in the richest and smoothest of them all, Rioja, with a parcel of magnums from the outstanding La Rioja Alta. This section should see you through the winter months and on into the warmer weather, matching excellently with spring lamb and summer barbeques.

A pale cherry red in the glass, this has heady aromas of sweet dusty red fruit, smoky tar, cranberries, liquorice and violets. There is the savoury undertow of dried herbs and a dash of salty soy sauce on the palate. In short, it displays all the best traits of the Sangiovese grape and the Brunello style. The tannins remain grippy and abundant, and should ensure a long drinking window for this wine.

Rich and dark in colour with strong aromas of white pepper and cassis fruits. In the mouth there is a hugely appealing wild gamey fruit character with a touch of liquorice supported by weight and depth provided by the more robust Mourvèdre variety. This has entered its drinking window, with the structure to hold for a further decade.

La Rioja Alta is an iconic estate, with cellars housing vintage upon vintage of Reservas and Gran Reservas. Their wines are only released after long ageing, when they are ready to drink, and are regularly snapped up by a loyal following. We are very pleased to offer this small parcel of Gran Reserva 890 from 2004. In magnum, the Tempranillo has had the chance to develop and harmonise, with magnificent tertiary flavours now singing along with the pure, fresh red cherry fruits on nose; it is beautifully fragrant. In the palate a lovely balance between sweetness of fruit and subtle freshness, with hints of plums, spice and fresh vanilla pod. This is a wine with natural structure, velvety texture, and fine integration. It is a great example of refinement and power all in one.

The extraordinary white wines here are not just about sweetness; they have a honeyed silkiness, velvety texture, but most importantly – notwithstanding their extraordinary sugar levels – lovely vibrancy and freshness. Marmalade notes from

the botrytis cinerea in the two Sauternes adds complexity and definition, whilst the late harvest style of the Vin de Constance and the Côteaux du Layon help the wines reach heights of exquisite concentration and purity.

An Englishman’s love of Port endures, and at the end of our list you will find three fine examples. These fully mature Vintage Ports from the great Douro houses deserve more than a single seasonal outing.

This second wine from one of Barsac’s finest estates, Ch Doisy Védrines, is a gorgeous little wine. Bright gold in colour, it has a charming honeycomb and pink grapefruit nose, with bright notes of candied citrus peel and freshly squeezed tangerines. It glides across the palate with perfectly pitched balance between sweetness and freshness. A case of 12 halves of this all-rounder sweetie will make sure every dinner party ends with a flourish.

This iconic Loire estate is now in the eight generation of the Touchais family, who release their wines at a minimum of 10 years age and only when they are perfect for drinking. Light golden yellow colour, this sweet Chenin Blanc has a beautifully floral honeyed nose. In the palate it is absolutely delightful; soft and elegant and yet creamy and honeyed, gently coating the mouth. A wine of extraordinary purity, with harmony and a fine feeling of freshness on the finish uplifting the flavours and providing great length and complexity. Stunning now but will unquestionably keep as well.

This was winemaker Matt Day’s first vintage at the helm of this historic and world famous South African estate. How fortunate for him, he says, that 2012 happened to be one of the greatest sweet wine vintages in South Africa. Bright, sparkling pale gold in the glass this wine is scented with blossom, candied orange peel, nutmeg and dried apricots. The Muscat de Frontignan variety is showing its wonderful aromatic profile, and the sweetness is perfectly balanced by a fresh and bright acidity. The wine is a blend of 6 separate components, picked between January and late April as the grapes raisined on the vine in the warm African sun freshened by the brisk ocean breeze of the Cape. Skin contact has given the wine texture and concentration, and the two and a half years ageing in barrel has given a subtle toasty note. It has a delectable finish. A sell-out on release from the estate we have held back a small parcel for the list.

This is all juicy mango, papaya, and tangerine marmalade, with overtones of baked quince and apple-filled pastries. Quite marvellous. The palate is light-footed and clean. This is everything I love about Sauternes – not too oily or heavy, well poised, and hugely enjoyable.

Dense aromas of cassis, Victoria plums and subtle hints of violets. In the palate there is a delicious balance between its taut firm texture and delicious sweetness and generous fruit flavours. There is an extraordinary degree of power and drive along with warmth and volume. Now 20 years old this is evolving beautifully but has the potential to go some way further. Very high class indeed.

We recommend storing your wine with Private Reserves Ltd., our independent wine storage company set up by Johnny and Laura Goedhuis in 1988, and now one of the largest, most respected wine storage operations in the UK.

Private Reserves use Octavian’s cellars in Corsham, where the storage facility is set within a disused limestone quarry. This provides perfect conditions for wine storage: constant humidity, temperature and vibration control, as well as excellent security.

If you chose to sell your wines, provenance will be a key component of its value for potential investors. Keeping your wine In Bond with the UK’s leading wine storage operation ensures impeccable provenance.

We are proud to have fantastic relationships with our growers and are delighted that many of them can attend our events in person, so that you have the chance to meet the people behind the wines. We hold numerous events throughout the year which vary in size and specialist region, from small focused single producer dinners, to larger regional tastings.

In 2016 we held a major Burgundy tasting at the Vintners’ Hall featuring over 20 domaines showing wines from 1999 to 2013 across all the major appellations. In the coming year we will be holding a number of smaller events focusing on Burgundy and Italy, both new releases and older back vintages, as well as hosting a major Bordeaux event at the Saatchi Gallery in April.
