January, 2017 is now in the books and we are
now halfway through February—this year is
already speeding right by. Soon enough it will
be car show season. But before we get there,
I’d ask that you take a minute and check on
your MCA membership status. As you know,
we are a chartered MCA regional club, and
our ability to maintain that status relies on
having an active membership with MCA
member, a list of which we supply each Feb-
ruary/March to the mothership. As a member,
there are many benefits including X-Plan
pricing on most new Ford vehicles (except of
course the Shelby , Raptor and RS), a
monthly magazine, access to the MCA mus-
tang.org forums, and a discounted rate at
MCA national shows. What you may not real-
ize is that these memberships allow MCA to
provide our club with resources like Liability
insurance for our car show and monthly meet-
ings. If you are not a member, please consider
joining!
At the Auto Show, we had a huge turnout,
and I am continually amazed at the great
members we have in this club. With a limited
supply of tickets for the preview event, I re-
ceived several emails in the days prior to the
event letting me know that someone could not
make it, or the number of tickets needed was
less than they had signed up for. This allowed
four additional families to attend, who other-
wise would not have been able to. This also
allowed me to go back to Ford and take un-
used tickets from other clubs, since we had a
lot of confidence that we would fill all of our
seats. As it stood, we filled all but four of the
78 seats that were allocated to us, and this
means that next year we should see a similar
number of tickets. Last year we had 85, and
had sixteen no-shows, which is why we had
fewer tickets this year. Thank you!
Couple things coming up to get on your cal-
endar—first, we will be hosting a Mustang
Day cruise on Saturday, April 15th which is
the day before Easter. We already have two
other clubs that have asked to join with us,
and I will be giving out Mustang Day decals
to the first fifty cars to show up to the meet-
ing spot. The cruise will end at Sly Fox with a
tour.
Also, Carlisle is just around the corner and
time is running out to register—go sign up!
Let’s see if we can get back over the 75 cars
we had two years ago!
Finally—you will hear us talk a lot about the
Chinese auction and ads for the car show over
the next few months. Please solicit ads and
donations to friends and local business own-
ers—Ads and Auction ticket sales are a huge
component of our annual income, which in
2016 allowed us to subsidize both the picnic
and the Christmas party.
Speaking of the Christmas party—mark the
date on your calendar for 2017 and 2018! The
feedback was so overwhelmingly positive
that we went ahead and booked both this year
and next with the venue. 12/9/2017, and then
12/8/2018.
Finally—new Club Jackets are available—
check out the forum for details!
Hope you are looking forward to a busy year
as much as I am! See you on March 2 at our
next meeting!

Every year on the Friday night before the opening of the Philadelphia Auto Show, there
is a Black Tie Tailgate event. For several years, I always thought that it would be a fun event to attend and finally this year, Bob Parsons and I decided to go for it. And we
were so glad that we did as it was the most exciting event I've gone to in a long time. In the week before, I had bought a new sparkly dress, some new shoes, and made ap-pointments for a pedicure, manicure, hair cut and style and make-up. Bob had rented
a tuxedo and got a haircut. As we entered, we walk down the red carpet and had our picture taken.
The Pony Express Page 3
After that we checked out the car club dis-
play which was right there. VFMC members, John Bartholomew and Alan Orenstein had
their cars in the display. Tim Hammond dis-played his purple Dodge Challenger and our friends Bill Tumas and Wayne Stamps had
their '65 fastback and '98 Nightmare respec-tively on display. We also saw in that area some cars that were
used in movies like Ghostbusters, the Bat-mobile, and the Death Race DeLorean.
We then walk down toward the middle of the show room where they had food stations and bars set up with all top shelf liquor. We also
were able for the first time (since there was no line!) to get a ride in a Jeep which went
up and down some rocky terrain and at some points was almost scary.
The Pony Express Page 4
We saw some local Channel 6 news celebrities like Karen Rogers, Melissa Magee and Adam Joseph. We also saw Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney. And we met up
with other club members, Heather Dillon and Amy Lesser. There were three Mustangs on display at the Ford exhibit: a GT, a convertible, and an Ecoboost. It was reported that Ford had the most floor space there of any
car company. From 9 PM to 11 PM we assembled in the Lexus/Mercedes area for dessert and dancing. Delicious little finger desserts were provided by Termini Bros. Jelly Roll
provided the musical entertainment. While in this area, we met up with Tim Su-dall.
The whole evening was really so enjoyable and although the tax-deductible ad-mission price was steep, the approximately $500,000 proceeds reported went to benefit the Neurology Department of CHOP. It was a nice feeling to know that all
the fun we were having went to benefit such a worthy cause.
The Pony Express Page 5
This year’s Philadelphia Auto Show Private Preview event hosted by Ford had a terrific turnout by
The Valley Forge Mustang Club with 75 members and their families in attendance, bright and early
at 7:30am on Saturday, January 28th. As in the past, this year’s event featured a hot breakfast (in a
very chilly room!) paired with a great speaker from Ford—Jim Owens, General Marketing Man-
ager for Ford Global Performance. Jim talked about his history with the company and gave some
insight into how the Ford Family interacts with the company and it’s employees. He also gave great
insight into some of the history with Ford and car clubs. Unlike other makes, Ford is a good supporter of the car club scene and a
great sponsor through MCA and a number of other avenues. Jim spoke about what it was about Ford that he believes makes the
difference and creates the rich car club scene that we enjoy today, particularly
in Philadelphia. This was all very interesting, however the most entertaining
bit was a segment comparing the Mustang clubs and show turnout to that of
the Camaro. This certainly rubbed a few of our GM-loyal friends and family a
bit, but was entertaining particularly when the old “Camaro Reunion” internet
Meme made an appearance.
This year’s auto show itself was very similar to years in the past, with
the manufacturers all in attendance and a return of the special interest DUB
section on the ground floor. This year’s special display area featured an invita-
tional for local car clubs which included three Valley Forge Mustang Club
members (a fourth was invited, but could not participate) - Tim Hammond,
Alan Orenstein and John Bartholomew. Most of the Mustangs were from local
clubs that we all recognize—VFMC, Bucks County Stangz and Cecil County
Mustangs, with Heather Dillon, a VFMC members, taking point with the auto
show organizers to orchestrate move in and move out activities. Other displays
included a collection of Camaros, an assortment of vintage cars, several super-
cars including a Saleen S7, and a number of movie prop cars.
The movie prop cars caught my attention with models from the origi-
nal Bat Mobile, the Mustang from Death Race, the DeLorean from Back To The Future, the Ghost Buster’s Cadillac from the lat-
est movie and several others. However, my favorite special display had to be the Stella Artrois Camper in the vendor area selling,
you guessed it, beer to make the good times roll while we waited in the very long line for a two minute ride in a Jeep.
I am glad to see so many of our members made it out this year—and if you happen to cross paths with Wally Hagen, the
regional marketing rep for Ford, please thank him for continuing to bring this event back. I am looking forward to seeing what the
9th annual preview event brings next year.

Our new Vice President, Dan Corby, is hitting the ground running and going back to a former practice of having guest speakers for our regular monthly meet-ings. First up was Bill Tumas from CJ Pony Parts who along with his sidekick Tony Intrieri gave a presenta-tion at our February meeting about the Road Rally they went on last year to Montana. The VFMC supported them in their endeavor and so much so that Bill had our logo put on the hood of his car. The rally was part of Rally North America and was a great way to see the country, traveling mostly on back roads and staying off
the major highways. At one point there was a scaven-ger hunt. The rally was for the benefit of Camp Sun-shine, a retreat for children with life threatening ill-nesses and their families.
Membership Update
For those of you who have renewed your membership, we have tried to dis-tribute your membership cards to you at the Christmas party and at our regular monthly meetings. This is to cut down on the cost of mailing them out. Normally, at this time of year we would be mailing out the remaining cards. However, our Membership Chairman is out of the state for six weeks on business, so once he is back home, he will be sending out by mail the re-maining membership cards that have not been distributed. Thank you for
your patience.

The following is a description of a 1969 Ford Mustang for sale: The car has one owner,
my elderly aunt who has been told she cannot drive anymore. It was her daily driver and needs some TLC. It is a two-door coupe with a vinyl top. It has an 8-cylinder engine with a 2 barrel carburetor. The odometer reads 01782 . . . Second time around. So 101,782
are the correct miles. The VIN# is: 9T01F101019. Car was used to go food shopping and doctors visits but was kept outside. The usual rust for a ‘69 Mustang is present. The
car is located in Northeast Philadelphia. Asking $6,100 OBO. Contact is Bill at: 267-987-8249.

Eleanor was born in 1971 not 1967
When you ask a car enthusiast if they saw the movie “Gone In 60 Seconds”, there is a good chance they will say yes. Usually they are referring to the 2000 Nicolas Cage film. After that there is a conversation about the 1967 Shelby GT500 that was the star car of the movie. But, not many people know that this movie was ac-tually a remake. If they do know it was a remake, they usually haven’t seen the movie it was based on. The original movie was made in 1974 by filmmaker H.B. “Toby” Halicki, who also starred in the film. Incidentally, he did his own driving stunts as well. The premise of the film was pretty much the same in both of the movies, steal a bunch of cars and don’t get caught! I think it’s a pretty good movie. I mean the beginning shows a Dodge Challenger getting stolen and getting a VIN number swap, so I thought it was fun, but I’m a geek. Still, I think you owe it to Mr. Halicki to watch it just once. You might enjoy it. Now, where was I? Oh yes, the whole reason I brought this movie up in the first place. In the original film, Eleanor was actually a yellow 1971 Mustang, referred to as “the last of the Mustangs” since the
next Mustang was the Mustang II. Now here’s the fun part. There were only 2 cars used in the movie. Re-member, this movie didn’t have a massive budget to work with. One was for stunt driving and the other was for the hero car shots. The stunt car got the expected upgrades, like a roll cage and suspension modifications. Both cars were actually 1971 sportsroof cars that were fitted with ’73 grilles but still kept the 1971 front bumper and valance. The lower bodysides and hood got a blackout treatment and that was it. Those blackouts have made some think that the car was a Mach 1, but Eleanor was just a
regular Mustang. Both cars were painted generic school bus yellow. Here are a couple of interesting things about the movie for you trivia buffs. The scene where the car hits the light pole on the highway wasn’t supposed to hap-pen, but it was kept because of how it turned out. And the jump in the closing minutes was a remarkable 128 feet. The stunt car still survives today but the hero car was crushed. Once you watch the original, you can appreciate the little easter eggs that are in the 2000 remake. For instance, in both movies, Eleanor was found at the International Towers in Long Beach. Do you have suggestions or a request for a hoonicorn you would like to see?
Send them to [email protected].
