1. Trace one round body shape onto template plastic or thin cardboard. Cut the body shape out

neatly on the lines with craft scissors.

trace around the template twice on the wrong side of the fabric. Cut them out on the trace

lines.

3. Trace two wing shapes, one tummy shape, one beak shape, two hat shapes and two hat brim

4. Peel the backing paper off the appliqué shapes and using the

pattern template as a guide, fuse the wings, the tummy, the beak,

the hat and the hat brim to one body shape; and a hat and hat

brim to the back body shape. Blanket-stitch around the appliqué

shapes using two strands of matching embroidery thread. I’ve

used metallic gold thread for the edge of the wings and the little

cross-stitches to make them sparkle.

5. Sew the two buttons near the top of the beak for the eyes.6. Thread two 15cm strands of black yarn (from the wrong side

through to the right side) on one side of the bottom of the tummy

of the Plum Pudding bird for the legs. Tie a knot in

both threads approximately 1 3/4in from the top. Thread a black

bead on to the threads then tie another knot to secure the bead.

Trim the remaining length of yarn to make little feet. Repeat for

the other side.

7. Lay the Plum Pudding Bird right side up on a firm surface with the legs tucked up towards

the centre of the bird so they don’t get caught in the seam. Lay the back of the bird right side

down on top of this and sew the body back to the front with right sides facing, leaving anopening where indicated on the pattern. Clip the curves then carefully turn the bird right side

out.

8. Stuff the Plum Pudding Bird firmly with polyester filling using a stuffing tool or the blunt end

of a wooden skewer. Whip-stitch or ladder-stitch the opening closed.

9. Sew a pre-made, or your own pompom, to the top of the hat, securing it well.

10. Thread the yarn for the hanging thread/loop through the bird at the back of the hat (near the

bottom of the pompom) and bring to the two ends together. Tie a knot in the yarn

approximately 2in - 3in from the top of the bird’s head. Thread the silver bead onto the yarn

and tie another knot to

secure the bead.11. Makes as many Plum

Pudding Birds as you

like and rejoice in the

fact that they won’t have

any effect whatsoever on

your waistline!
