The Pitsford Post 20th March - 7th April 2017

Welcome These last few weeks of term have been a real treat, full of trips, successes and surprises. The last day of term was no exception, with House music, an Easter play and Lent service finishing off the week. Our Junior School children were also thoroughly delighted when the Easter Bunny dropped by to invite them all to take part in an Easter Egg Hunt around the school grounds! We hope you all enjoy the Easter Break and look forward to seeing you all refreshed and ready for the Summer Term in a couple of weeks time.

Junior School Chamber Choir In our last Pitsford Post we shared the new that our Junior School Chamber Choir had won their class at the Kettering and District Eisteddfod. Later that day, we heard that not only had they won their class, but after they had left they were awarded with the “best overall choir” award! With another two awards for their trophy cabinet, here are our choir members proudly showing off their achievement. Well done to our singers!

Easter! Today a special visitor popped in to school to meet some of our children. The Easter Bunny greeted our pupils at lunchtime, handing out some yummy Easter treats! The Juniors followed on the Easter celebrations with an egg hunt throughout the school grounds and the J3, 4, 5 & 6 end of Term performance of “Alice in Wonderland”. As the show takes place this afternoon, we will be sharing some photographs of the show in our next Pitsford Post.

Musical Success We are delighted to announce that Peter Smith in Year 9 has achieved Distinction his Grade 6 Piano. Peter is also the Alastair Green award holder this year. Alex Smith also achieved success with a merit in her grade 5 piano. Congratulations to both!

House Music Competition On the last day of term, our Senior pupils joined together for their last house competition of the Term - the house Music Competition! It was a close run contest between all 3 houses with only 4 points separating the teams. Hesketh started with the familiar beat of Micheal Jackson’s “Beat it” , next up was Robinson, who entertained us all with music from Rocky (accompanied by some great acting..) and Wake closed the competition with the theme from Star Wars (complete with Alien masks). All performances were brilliant and highly entertaining , but after careful consideration the judges decided that Wake were the winners! This takes the scores to :

Hesketh : 990 Robinson: 650 Wake: 570

Year 7: Micro:bits The BBC micro:bit is a pocket-sized codeable computer with motion detection, a built-in compass and Bluetooth technology, which was given free to every child in year 7 or equivalent across the UK in 2016. It aims to inspire young people to get creative with digital and develop core

skills in science, technology and engineering and this term our very own Year 7 groups have been testing those skills. From dropping them on the floor to trigger a response… to programming them to play music, they have been enjoying seeing that programming come to life.

Compton Verney Art Trip by Oliver Stevens, Year 8 Recently we went on a trip to Compton Verney Art Gallery. It has a collection of art, mainly paintings, stored in a large house set in really beautiful landscaped grounds. Our year group did a workshop on landscapes. We looked at three paintings with our guide John. The first two paintings were part of the Naples collection. The first painting that we looked at was a painting of Mount Vesuvius erupting, one half of the painting was chaotic and was depicting the eruption and the other half was showing moonlight on the bay of Naples and was extremely calm. Our guide John told us to draw our favourite part of the painting, to be used to create a collage later on. The second painting that we looked at was also from Naples but pictured a storm along the coast with shipwrecks and people huddled on rocks, again we drew our favourite part of the painting for our collage. We then went upstairs into a gallery filled with paintings not done by professional artists but by normal people, John told us to choose any painting to draw for our collage. After this we were allowed into the grounds and we went and saw the Geometric-dome. This is a dome made entirely out of metal triangles which will be used to hold workshops in the future. Lastly we all were given art materials (watercolours, oil pastels …) and were given an hour to make a collage combining of all the paintings we had drawn. Some of the end results were very impressive and were enjoyed very much.

Ballet Classes with Contemporary Elements

Teacher Natalie was a professional ballet dancer who trained in ballet and contemporary at Rambert and danced with the Vienna Festival Ballet. She is a Royal Academy of Dance and Body Control Pilates registered teacher. Please email Natalie at [email protected] for more details and to book a place by the latest 24th April.

Achievement - Kettering Eisteddfod At the Kettering Eisteddfod one of our Year 7 pupils, Tom Moxon, performed a solo acting piece and a duologue. Tom did exceptionally well, achieving first in both of these categories. He was also asked to perform his duologue at the Celebration Concert which took place the following weekend. Here is Tom with his Solo Acting Award - well done Tom!

J2 Holi Festival Our J2 class have been learning about the Holi Festival as part of their RE lesson on Hinduism, also known as “the festival of colours”. The children used coloured glitter water on the playground - replicating a key part of the festival that involves throwing colours and water at friends and relatives!

J5 Rocket Day Earlier this week, J5 designed and launched their own rockets as the culmination to their topic about 'Planet Earth...and beyond!' The morning was spent discussing the forces needed to take a rocket into space and then each pair designed and made their own rocket. During the afternoon, the rockets were launched to see which design travelled the furthest. All of them travelled a good distance, although some had a better trajectory than others! The winning rocket was designed by Matthew Mason and Ben Owen. Well done, boys!

U14 Netball by Sophia Russell, Year 9 On the 28th March, the U14 girls played their last netball match of the season! We played Malcolm Arnold, one of our toughest teams to beat! The end score was 13-10 to Malcolm Arnold and although we didn't get off to the very best start - we pulled through! Well done to everyone who played, the player of the match was Sophia Russell. I would like to thank and congratulate the whole team for making this season so enjoyable and give a special thanks to Mrs Chacksfield and Mrs McNally - our incredible coaches who have made this netballing season possible.
