From the Opera @ The Waterfront concert with Stuart Skelton, the record attendance for Madama Butterfly, to the exciting Gala with Michael Fabiano and our most recent critically acclaimed Rigoletto weekend, it has truly been an outstanding season and we’re thrilled that you are a part of our opera family and greatly appreciate your patronage. This weekend’s hilarious performances of The Pirates of Penzance brings another major opera star to Palm Beach Opera with Stephanie Blythe in the role of Ruth. Few, if any other regional opera companies, can claim to have so much variety and star power in one season! I would like to thank Daniel Biaggi

and his incredibly talented staff for an opera season we will never forget.

Throughout the season, our Board and Guild leaders have shown great commitment and financial support, and I take this opportunity to thank all of them for their time, dedication, and generosity. We continue to build both the Board and the Guild and I invite each of you to consider joining us and to become actively involved in shaping Palm Beach Opera’s future. We welcome your ideas to continuously strengthen Palm Beach Opera’s impact in both the local and global opera communities.

For the 2017 season, we increased our season subscriber base by 20% and we are hopeful we will see another increase in 2018. To date, the 2018 season is already eliciting strong results in subscription renewals and another increase from new subscribers. Please renew your subscriptions and ask your friends to join you so we can keep the momentum going! At the same time, we still have a gap to close for this season in order to finish our year in a strong financial position. Our many members of the newly created Co-Producer Society have provided significant underwriting for our mainstage productions and we are grateful for their generous support. Now we look to you, our loyal public, to play your part in making an annual contribution. Dear Opera friends,

Once again, we have already reached the end of our mainstage opera season, and I thank you sincerely for joining us today as well as at our other productions this year.

With your support, we’ve accomplished an extraordinary season: Our mainstage operas have resulted in record attendance and critical acclaim, and our subscriber family has grown by 20%. The Opera @ The Waterfront concert was well attended despite rainy conditions, the Gala with Michael Fabiano at the Flagler Museum was a musical and social highlight, and the Children’s Performance this weekend will fill the Kravis Center with our youngest audience.

Equally important is the increase in numbers and impact of our Education and Community Engagement Programs through the Goldner Center for Children’s Opera Education. Our Concerts in the Classroom were enjoyed by more school children than ever before, our ANIMA program brought opera to adult care facilities and the Homeless Coalition, and new collaborations with The Ebony Chorale of the Palm Beaches and the Atlantic Classical Orchestra resulted in engaging concerts and new friends. Most significant is the expansion of our professional singer training initiatives, as a result of which we will have 20 artists here next season as part of the Benenson Young Artist Program and the added Apprentice Artist Program from national auditions, bringing Palm Beach Opera into the ‘big leagues’ of young artist programs in the US.

Our 2018 season is off to a great start as well - thank you very much to those many of you who have already renewed your 2018 subscription or joined our subscriber family for the first time! Your continued support will remain vital to the success of Palm Beach Opera. Next season’s budget suddenly includes a few ‘unknowns’ on the revenue side, as public funding from the NEA and from other governmental funding sources are no longer guaranteed. I urge all of you to speak up for arts and culture in your lives, and I encourage you to be as personally generous as you can to help offset the potential loss of public funding. We will carefully watch all future developments, so as to remain fiscally responsible. Your support of the productions you enjoy therefore is once again more important than ever before – Thank you!

STORY SYNOPSISACT I. During the time of Queen Victoria, on the rugged coast of Cornwall, Frederic celebrates his twenty-first birthday, marking the end of his apprenticeship to a band of pirates. Frederic explains to the pirates that he will be leaving them since he is now free from the obligations of his indentures. His nursemaid Ruth, who became a pirate in order to remain with him all these years, steps forward to reveal that he had only remained with them for so long out of a sense of duty, admitting that she misunderstood the instructions of Frederic’s father, and mistakenly apprenticed him to be a pirate instead of a pilot.

Frederic also announces that, although it pains him, it will be his responsibility as an upstanding citizen to destroy pirates. In his last moments as a member of their band though, he feels obligated to point out the reason that they are not successful pirates: since they consider themselves orphans, they allow any of their victims who claim to be orphans to go free. Frederic notes that this fact is widely known, and therefore captured ships’ entire companies routinely claim to be orphans to avoid death. He invites the pirates to give up their pirating ways so that he would no longer need to destroy them. The Pirate King responds to Fredric that, compared with respectability, piracy is relatively honest. The pirates depart, leaving Frederic and Ruth behind.

During his time with the pirates, Frederic had never seen another woman, and the considerably older Ruth tries to capitalize on his ignorance by convincing him to marry her. He nearly agrees until a group of beautiful young girls approach on the beach. Realizing he has been deceived, he sends Ruth away and then asks the girls if any of them would marry him out of pity. Mabel is glad to engage herself to such a handsome man, and agrees to help him reform his life. Meanwhile, the pirates have surrounded the group and leap out to seize the girls, claiming them as their brides. Mabel warns them that all the girls are wards of a Major-General, who soon arrives on the scene. Having heard of the famous Pirates of Penzance, he claims to be an orphan to elicit

their sympathy. The soft-hearted pirates are moved to tears and release the girls, declaring the Major-General and his daughters honorary members of their band.

ACT II. Tortured by the lie he told the pirates, the despondent Major-General is surrounded by his daughters who attempt to console him. Meanwhile, Frederic has mobilized the police and plans to lead them into battle against the pirates that very evening. The Pirate King and Ruth secretly arrive to have a word with Frederic. They explain to him that they now realize his apprenticeship contract was to indenture him until his twenty-first birthday. Because his birthday happens to be on the 29th of February, which only comes about every four years, he has technically only had five birthdays. A slave of duty, Frederic sadly agrees to rejoin the pirates, and then feels obliged to inform the Pirate King of the Major-General’s lie. Outraged, the Pirate King vows revenge. Before returning to the ship, Frederic breaks the unfortunate news to Mabel, who pleads with him to stay but ultimately supports his dutiful sacrifice. They promise to remain true to each other until his apprenticeship is finally finished, sixty-three years hence.

Frederic departs and prepares to now lead the pirates against the Major-General. The police hide when they hear the band approaching, and the pirates hide when they see the Major-General, who is fraught with guilt and wandering about in his night robe. When the girls come looking for their father, the pirates suddenly attack and the police are easily defeated. The Pirate King tells the captured Major-General to prepare for death. However, knowing that all Englishmen love the Queen, the police demand that the pirates concede in the monarch’s name, which they do. Just as they are to be led to prison, Ruth reveals that the pirates are actually noblemen who have gone astray. The Major-General forgives the noble pirates, and encourages them to marry his daughters and return to their former lives in Parliament.

BACKGROUNDBACKGROUND Copyright laws were quite different in 1879, and the United States offered no protection for foreign composers. Gilbert & Sullivan learned this the hard way when pirated versions of their opera H.M.S. Pinafore popped up throughout the America. In order to combat the theft or unauthorized reproduction of The Pirates of Penzance, they elected to have a soft opening in England on December 30th, 1879, immediately followed by the official premiere the following day in New York. The soft opening in England was less than grand. The actors (who were also performing in H.M.S. Pinafore at the time) were kept in the dark about the script and music until two days prior to the show. They delivered the performance at a matinee hour after only one rehearsal, carrying their scripts onto the stage, and using costumes from other productions. The official premiere in New York received much praise and launched touring productions that were permitted by Richard D’Oyly Carte, Gilbert, and Sullivan. The Pirates of Penzance opened in London on April 3, 1880 to even more success and continues to be one of Gilbert & Sullivan’s most popular operas. INTERESTING FACT The phrase ‘topsy turvy’ was applied to Sir Gilbert’s librettos because his plot lines often placed characters in puzzling situations that turned their world on its head. In the end, Gilbert would work out the confusion using a simple and logical explanation, setting an upside down world right-side up.

CHIEF CONDUCTOR'S NOTES Whenever I begin rehearsals for an opera, I ask myself what this particular piece means to me and how it can speak to today’s public. With Puccini or Verdi, the answer is self-evident: the beauty of the expression and the passions evoked are elements that keep us riveted. And yet, why are we still interested in Gilbert and Sullivan’s oeuvres? Steeped in Victorian mores, these works evoke a very specific period with jokes and references that do not necessarily remain vivid to a modern

audience. One needs only a few moments, however, to be completely enchanted by the G&S atmosphere. Something quite beguiling is most certainly afoot.

While operetta from Paris or Vienna was already a dominant genre in Europe and America, this British brand of musical theater represented a niche for English speaking audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. As a more popular form of music theater than traditional opera, G&S’s works enjoyed a great amount of success in their day. The arrival of the two creators in the US would only be matched by the Beatles, almost 100 years later.

Significantly, this repertoire reunites a great number of traditions, all of which come together in a unique fashion: English comedy at the highest level (Monty Python would never had found its way without G&S), an orchestration as light and grazioso as anything penned by Mendelssohn and lyrical writing comparable to Donizetti, Rossini and early Verdi. While these operettas mercilessly satirize 19th century opera, it is very important to recognize the craft and sophistication of the music and the libretto. This is no cheap or lowbrow fare.

The depth of the craziness of The Pirates of Penzance has delighted audiences since its creation in 1880. It is a celebration of zany absurdity that is as silly as it is smart. That said, perhaps the most important element of all is that while much of the opera mocks itself, there are genuine moments of artistic revelation that are breathtaking. At the end of the first act when all action is bedlam, all the singers take a moment from the lunacy to sing an ode to poetry (“thou heav’n born maid”). It is a beautiful musical interlude that becomes a very brief respite from the madness of the story, and that reminds us, no matter how sarcastic Gilbert and Sullivan can be, that the core of their art is inspired by exquisite music and text. In the wake of the recent horrors that London suffered, I believe that moments like this remind us why this music remains to us so vital.

DAVID STERNCONDUCTORDavid Stern's musical leadership is spread across three continents. He is the founder and director of the Paris-based opera company and period-instrument ensemble, Opera Fuoco, as well as artistic advisor and principal conductor of the Shanghai Baroque Festival and music director of opera at the Crested Butte Music Festival in Colorado. In 2015 he was appointed chief conductor of the Palm Beach Opera.

Stern is known for his extensive range of repertoire. In his time as music director of the Israel and the St. Gallen Opera houses, he championed 18th century opera and eclectic works such as Simone

Mayr's Medea, Berg's Wozzeck, Britten’s Turn of the Screw, and Weill's Mahagonny. He has premiered four new operas since 2010 - Gil Shohat’s The Child Dreams at the Israel Opera, Nicolas Bacri's Così fanciulli, commissioned by Opera Fuoco and performed at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, Ben Moore's Enemies, A Love Story in Palm Beach and Jan Sandström’s The Rococo Machine in Drottningholm, Sweden. With Opera Fuoco, he has recorded and re-premiered JC Bach's opera Zanaida in Leipzig, Paris, Vienna and Malta, and released a CD of French Romantic Cantatas with the mezzo-soprano Karine Deshayes.

Stern has enjoyed collaborations with international stage directors including David Alden, Stéphane Braunshweig, Jakob Peters-Messer, Aron Stiehl, Waut Koeken, Robin Guarino and Sam Helfrich. With Yoshi Oïda he created iconic settings of Britten’s Curlew River and Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, and with Francisco Negrin he led performances of Mozart’s Mitridate as artist in residence at the 2014 Drottningholm Opera Festival.

Stern is a frequent guest around the globe with symphonic and chamber orchestras. He is regularly invited to the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, the Shanghai and Guangzhou Symphonies, the China Philharmonic, the New Russian Symphony, the National Orchestra of Mexico, and has had recent appearances with the Vienna Symphony and the Hong Kong Philharmonic. Before creating his own period-instrument ensemble, David Stern was a regular guest with Concerto Köln and the Basel Chamber Orchestra.

Since launching the Aix Festival Academy in 1998, David Stern has been committed to developing young voices. He created Opera Fuoco in 2003 as a platform to train young French singers in repertoire ranging from Monteverdi to John Cage, combining both an opera studio offering regular master classes and an opera company producing and co-producing larger concertante and staged productions. In 2016 he conducted the Magic Flute at the Juilliard School in New York, and he has been re-invited for baroque repertoire with the school’s Ensemble 415. As artistic advisor of the Shanghai Baroque Festival, he involves singers from the Shanghai Conservatory and the Opera Fuoco Studio, and he works regularly with the Young Artist Programs in Palm Beach and Crested Butte, Colorado.

Stern received his Bachelor of Arts from Yale and his Masters of Music from the Juilliard School. He resides in Paris with his wife, violinist Katharina Wolff, and his two daughters.

ALAN PAULSTAGE DIRECTORAlan Paul is the Associate Artistic Director of The Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C., recipient of the 2012 Regional Theater Tony Award. Alan’s opera credits include the premiere of Penny for Washington National Opera, and numerous contemporary works for Urban Arias including the premiere of Josephine (Cipullo), After Life (Cipullo), Bastianello (Musto), Lucrezia (Bolcom), Photo-Op (Cummings), The Filthy Habit (Hilliard), and Before Breakfast (Pasatieri). Alan has taught acting and scene study for the Washington National Opera’s Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program as well as the University of Maryland Opera Studio. In 2013, he was a finalist

for the European Opera Directing Prize in Vienna, Austria. Alan has collaborated frequently with the National Symphony Orchestra, staging concerts at the Kennedy Center’s Concert Hall. At The Shakespeare Theatre, Alan has directed Romeo and Juliet, Kiss Me Kate, Man of La Mancha, The Winter’s Tale, Twelfth Night, The Boys from Syracuse, and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, for which he received the Helen Hayes Award for Best Director of a Musical. Alan also directs at D.C.’s Studio Theatre, Signature Theatre, and Strathmore Concert Hall. His upcoming projects include Man of La Mancha for Portland Opera, The Pajama Game for Arena Stage, and Camelot at The Shakespeare Theatre.

DEANNA DYSCHOREOGRAPHERDeanna Dys recently worked with legendary director Hal Prince on New York City Opera's hit revival of Candide. Her choreographic credits include the pre-Broadway premiere of Disney's Aladdin, the Drama Desk nominated Off-Broadway hit revival The Golden Land, and the world Off-Broadway premiere of Alan Zweibel's comedy Pinecone Moment. She directed and choreographed the International Touring company of the Tony award winning musical Crazy for You which played throughout Europe for two years. Regional credits include Aida, 42nd Street, The Full Monty (Denver Post Nomination for Best Choreography), State Fair (Dallas Theatre League nomination

for Best Choreography), Annie, and Bye Bye Birdie. Choreographic television credits include Boardwalk Empire, Deception, One Life to Live, and a series of commercials for the Boston Red Sox that received numerous Telly awards and a regional Emmy Award. She recently co-directed and choreographed a music video for Publix Supermarkets. Her Florida tourism video “Dancin' in the Sand” was the recipient of the St. Petersburg Clearwater Film Commission's Grand prize award. Deanna was also the assistant choreographer for the feature films The Stepford Wives and Little Manhattan.

GREG RITCHEYASSOCIATE CONDUCTOR & CHORUS MASTERA versatile musician on the podium and at the keyboard, conductor Gregory Ritchey has held positions with companies both in the US and internationally including the Wexford Opera Festival, Palm Beach Opera, the Amalfi Coast Music Festival and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. Most notably in recent seasons, he has conducted productions of Le nozze di Figaro, Turn of the Screw, Gianni Schicchi, and a workshop of Terence Blanchard’s opera, Champion. At present he is the Associate Conductor at Palm Beach Opera, where after a recent performance on the Waterfront Concert series, for which he serves as conductor and music director, the Palm Beach Arts Paper noted, "Mr. Ritchey is to be congratulated for leading such massive forces in a splendid and stirring performance. The audience rose to their feet with acclaim." During his time at PBO he has also been Chorus Master for more than thirty-five productions.

A graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, Mr. Ritchey maintains an active chamber music, collaborative and solo piano career, performing throughout the United States and Europe. In a recent recital at the Wexford Festival, Opera News noted that Mr. Ritchey “partnered superbly at the piano.” Mr. Ritchey has previously held music staff positions with companies across the US including the Dallas Opera, Central City Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Bard Music Festival, Virginia Opera, and Sarasota Opera. He has also been a faculty member at the University of North Texas, Louisiana State University, and Texas Christian University. PETER DEAN BECKLIGHTING DESIGNERPeter Dean Beck has designed scenery and/or lighting for over three hundred productions around North America. Among his opera credits are Falstaff, Turandot, Manon, Don Giovanni, Madama Butterfly, Hansel and Gretel, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Roméo et Juliette for companies including Atlanta Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, Virginia Opera, and Chautauqua Opera. He has designed productions of Andrea Chenier, L'italiana in Algeri, Macbeth, Elektra, and Tristan und Isolde for Hawaii Opera Theatre, where he has been principal designer for over thirty seasons. He has also been designing productions for the Eklund Opera at CU Boulder for twenty-three seasons. In Asia, he has designed a double bill of Le Rossignol and Cavalleria rusticana for Sakai City Opera in Japan, and designed the lighting for Cavalleria rusticana and I pagliacci in Macao and Don Carlo in Hong Kong. His musical theater credits include Fiddler on the Roof, Sound of Music, Music Man, Les Misérables, and Wizard of Oz for Skylight Music Theatre. His work for dance includes The Indigo Girls Project for Atlanta Ballet and Nutcracker for Ballet Hawaii.

SONA AMROYANCOSTUME DESIGNERSona Amroyan studied fashion design in her native Armenia before beginning her career in the US as a costume designer in the indie film industry. Since 2009, Sona has been the Costume Designer and Wardrobe Supervisor at Opera Memphis, where she has created productions of La bohème, Rigoletto, Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, and I pagliacci. Among her upcoming projects includes a new production of La traviata for Opera Memphis.

KATHY WASZKELEWICZ HAIR AND MAKE-UP DESIGNERSince 1981 Kathy has worked with over 20 different opera companies. She was the winner of the William Zauder Award for outstanding makeup at the NCA National Showcase in Las Vegas. Kathy has been a makeup artist for the Tony Awards and the Kennedy Center Honors, and has toured with Disney’s National Tour of Beauty and the Beast as their head makeup and prosthetic artist. Kathy has been with Palm Beach Opera since 1993 and became the resident wig and makeup designer in 1999. Kathy participated with Palm Beach Opera’s Swing & Sings summer camp for kids, and especially enjoys Children’s Performance days.

The Palm Beach Opera Benenson Young Artist Program is funded by The Edward H. Benenson Foundation.

Additional support provided by Il Circolo, The Italian Cultural Society of the Palm Beaches, and the Fritz and Levinia Jensen Foundation.

The Palm Beach Opera Benenson Young Artist Program is a stepping stone to a successful career as an opera singer for post-graduate and emerging singers. During their five-month residency in Palm Beach they develop and polish essential stagecraft and performance skills, aided by musical and career guidance from Palm Beach Opera’s experienced artistic staff. The Young Artists appear on the mainstage in supporting roles, cover leading roles, and are featured soloists in the annual Opera @ The Waterfront concert and in concerts throughout our community.

Graduates of the Palm Beach Opera Young Artist Program have gone on to successful careers singing in major opera houses in the U.S. and abroad, including The Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Berlin State Opera, and Theater an der Wien.

The Apprentice Artist Program of Palm Beach Opera is an opportunity for recent conservatory graduates to gain valuable experiences at the professional level.

The Apprentice Artists are Palm Beach Opera’s community ambassadors, performing throughout the region in education and outreach concerts, as well as adding strength and consistency to all of our mainstage production choruses. Apprentice Artists further their artistic development through regular coaching with the Palm Beach Opera music staff and guest faculty. With the addition of this program, along with the expansion of the Palm Beach Opera Studio training program for high school singers, Palm Beach Opera becomes one of the only opera companies in the nation to have a three-tiered training initiative for the next generation of singers.

Palm Beach Opera Studio is a seven-month training program that fosters the skills high school students will need to pursue a successful music career in college and beyond. The Studio program is rigorous; the learning experience is exceptional and participants are held to high professional standards.

Studio features a Performance Track that engages singers in private voice instruction, vocal coachings, masterclasses, and workshops, and an Arts Administration Track where members engage in one-on-one meetings with Palm Beach Opera Directors and Managers to discover how an opera company functions year round.
