MicHAeLA deWiT & PAuL WHiTeHeAd 05.29.11our love story: Paul and Michaela attended the same high school, White Station High School, but did not know each other during these years. They often wonder how many times they passed each other in the halls and never imagined they would end up together. In spring of 2008, Paul moved back to Memphis from Knoxville. He re-activated his facebook account, and kept seeing Michaela’s face pop up. He decided to use the “poke” feature to get her attention, and to his surprise she “poked” him back! He asked her out twice, but both times she politely declined. However, after giving Paul’s offer some thought, Michaela reconsidered and sent him a message telling him that she would like to go out with him. Unfortunately, he told her he would be in Japan from the end of May until the end of August. They agreed to get together once he returned to the United States. But in the meantime, Michaela requested to know more about him. So began a series of long facebook messages, often 4 a day, spanning an ocean and a 13 hour time difference. Before long, they couldn’t get enough of each other. Paul says that he fell in love with Michaela before even meeting her. Michaela surprised Paul at the airport when he arrived home on August 24, 2008. The two have been inseparable ever since! For their first Valentine’s day together, Paul had all of their letters from the 3 months he was in Japan bound into a book :-)

proposal story: We were supposed to be meeting our closest friends for dinner, and so I was in a hurry. They greeted me, and then he said that Rosie had something to show me in the backyard. She led me to the backyard, wagging her tail so excitedly, and when I opened the gate, there was an enormous grill sitting there with a huge bouquet of flowers on it!!! My heart was thumping so quickly, and I started shaking. He told me to open the grill, and when I did, there was a little box sitting inside as well as a bag of CARROTS (ha!). I immediately burst into tears. I was speechless, which for me is rare, and I handed him the box without a word. He got down on one knee, told me that he loves me and wants to spend the rest of his life with me, and then he said, “Will you be my wife?” and put the absolutely stunning ring on my finger! I was crying the whole time. The diamond is from my grandma’s ring, and Paul had it re-set in a white gold and diamond setting. She was my soulmate, and she thought Paul and I were b’shert (which is Yiddish for “meant to be”). Before she died, she told me that I was a fool if I did not marry Paul. She knew he was the one, and he most certainly is!

the big day: The big day was absolutely magical. Everything looked perfect and everyone was completely supportive and helpful. One of the most special moments was the “first look” photography with Lindsey Lissau. Being able to see Paul before the ceremony and experience the joy of beginning our journey together was indescribably wonderful. He was grinning so wide when he turned around and saw me for the first time in my wedding gown. Also, throughout the ceremony Paul made jokes to keep me from crying. He had the minister and the whole crowd of family and friends laughing, which also made for some great photos. When he was supposed to be feeding me the cake, he pretended to feed me the piece and then popped it into his own mouth. That had everyone laughing really hard too!

“Sounds good, whatever you think.” if it only mattered what your bride thought, than she wouldn’t take the time to ask you for an opinion. contrary to popular culture, most brides desperately want their groom more involved with the wedding planning. While there will be some aspects that you have less of any opinion than others, it is important to not fall mute for majority of the major decisions. After all, a wedding is the first step in your new life together and i’m betting you want to have a say in that.

“How much?!” constant criticism of how much is being spent really takes the fun out of planning a wedding for all parties involved, particularly your bride. instead, map out a budget that you can both agree on for the wedding so you both have a clear understanding of how much money is being spent where. With financial woos the number one precursor for divorce; start off on the right foot.

“I’m really whipped... I just want to chill. Can all this planning stuff wait?” Let me clarify... grooms get a hall-pass on this statement a couple times. By the third, fourth, every time we ask for help and you responsed with another excuse to postpone, our patience is wearing thin. Brides see a mountain of work ahead of them when it comes to all the details of a wedding. From decor to family drama to slimming down for our dream dress, we see our own sacrifice everywhere and need you to pitch in. After all, the wedding is for the both of us.

“Didn’t I mention that? I must have forgot.” it is important that both bride and groom are kept in each other’s loop regarding the wedding, guest’s travel plans and Mom’s sudden one-eighty considering her help with the rehearsal dinner. A wedding can be a logistical nightmare and “forgetting” to mention vital details can derail a timeline and add a lot of undue stress to your bride. When you have new wedding information, make a point to share this with your fiancé, pronto. i’m betting there’s an app for that...

“This really doesn’t matter to me. I don’t want to help.” Agreed, tying ribbons around hundreds of wedding programs or filling custom seed packets for favors may not be your cup of tea. But your bride is excited and loves the details that make your day personal and heartfelt, including those that are somewhat time-consuming. And when you love a person you do things that are not important to you because they matter to the person who matters most to you.

love story: We were both out with friends when he approached me out of the blue. He had such confidence and we just carried on a great conversation. After that night, we remained friendly but it wasn’t until 6 months later that we started dating. We are perfect for each other because we just compliment each other in so many ways. We understand each other and just know how to read each other sometimes without even talking. He came over one afternoon after work and was playing music and dancing with Grayson (my son) when he just hopped down on one knee. Grayson was every bit as excited as we were!

Wedding details: I have always wanted an outside wedding. So we chanced it and it was beautiful. The weather was 70 degrees and sunny. At night it was around 55. The home of Dr. Steve and Dr. Sylvia Richey is so beautifully laid out. We had the wedding in their backyard at 5:00pm and the cocktail hour after the wedding on their patio where we served appetizers like shrimp and grits, spinach dip, and cocktail drinks while we were taking pictures. Then an hour later we moved to the tennis court where we had a large tent for our guests to be entertained with the band and food.

The theme was simple but very classy. I wanted the wedding to have green and white hydrangeas and the bridesmaids to bring the splash of color (red orange yellow, etc ). They wore a pistachio green strapless dress with a brown sash. It looked wonderful. For the reception I used pale green tablecloths and the flowers were green and white with candles hanging down from tables. My cake was in the gazebo right outside the tent and i had hanging white flowers to accent my cake. The cocktail tables had brown tables cloths and that is where the small dabs of color were near the dance floor. It really looked amazing. I wanted a fun dance floor. So we chose the black and white one to make it “pop” in the tent. Angela Mahaffey was seriously the best ever to work with. She helped me pick out everything and helped make my day perfect.

One thing that was added that the guests loved is we had a photo booth that Simply Delicious (caterer) provided and the guest were able to take home a picture of themselves from the night so they will remember. New thing that people are adding now to weddings.

stories like cinderella confirm to us shoes are not only cool, they are an important part of

the wedding day. On our wedding day we will probably wear the most expensive dress we

will ever wear, so of course accessories, like shoes, are important.

Wedding shoes used to be plain, low healed, white and sometimes boring. After all, most

people thought they would never be seen. now they are supposed to be seen. shoes are

a great way to express your personality and creativity. The most obvious trend was the pop

of color we saw peaking out from under the white dresses. Wedding shoes can be any color

now. The “sex and the city” movie helped popularize the “something blue” shoe which we

saw a lot of the last few years. shoes can match the color of the wedding scheme, be the

color of a favorite sports team, or be multicolored.

Low heels, high heels, sandals, wedges, flip flops, and even boots have been popular.

some brides say they spent longer looking for their shoes than the dress. One of our

beautiful brides, loved her shoes so much she had a replica of her shoe in pink icing on

top of her cake.

Trends for 2012 continue from last year with a few more neutrals and metallics. Bling, which

never really went out of style, has returned full force. Vintage style, lace and embossed

patterns that we have been seeing in the dresses are showing up in the shoes.. Platform

shoes return from the 70′s with a modern twist. if the groom is much taller than the bride

this is a great equalizer.

if you are getting married in the near future make sure you say yes to to a great pair of

shoes. Popular designers for wedding shoes include, Jimmy choo, steve Madden, stu-

art Weitzman Martinez Valero, Badgley Mischka, christian Louboutin, Benjamin Adams,

Aldo Tavera, nina critia, ivanka Trump, Betsey Johnson, Kate spade, Manolo Blahnik ,Jodie

Frangiq, sam edelman, Fifi, Boutique 9, seychelles and of course Prada. nothing makes a

girl feel better than a great pair of shoes.

consider websites like Zappos.com and endless.com , andstylehive.com. Many bridal dress

salons also carry a great selection of shoes in the seasons hottest styles and colors.

Bring your shoes to the dress fitting to make sure the length of the dress works with the

shoes. Remember getting married is a marathon event. Make sure you love the comfort

as well as the style. Heel height is important. if you don’t normally wear a higher heel, you

might want to have a pair of flats for the reception This should be a happy day, don’t let

shoes make it miserable. Remember on your wedding day you will be on your feet all day.

if you can wear your shoes during a bridal portrait session or for several hours one day you

will get a better idea how comfortable they are. Pick a shoe that fits your personality, style,

and wedding and you will be glad to paid attention to the details.

A pair if shoes can change your life, just ask cinderella.

Behind the Story

our love story: Chris and I met our Sophomore Year of College at Northwest Community College in 2006. My best friend/roomate invited me along with her and her boyfriend to a little get together at Chris’s house (my husband) I would say about 6 or 7 of us sat down to play card games. So Chris and I got to know each other over a game of Texas Holdem. I won of course!

Chris popped the question to me on New years night in New York. It was really sweet. New York was somewhere I had never been and I was dying to go! We went to a really nice dinner and returned to the hotel room shortly after. As I walked in to our suite he had champagne awaiting and when I turned around he was on one knee. To be very honest I was so nervous(and I know he was too) I can’t remember exactly what he said. All I know is I said yes!

the big day: To be honest our wedding day went amazing! I had a ton of help from friends and family. I didn’t cry believe it or not! My most memorable moment would be my Grandfather walking me down the aisle. My dad past away in 04’ so that was really special to have my grandfather there to give me away. The reception was a blast. We had an awesome wedding party.

the details: My vision/theme just wanted to be something very romantic with a touch of southern! I made it romantic using colors of grey, pink, and plum with flowers and other decor. My southern touch to it was definitely the food and we did one DIY project by decorating Mason jars to serve our cocktails in.

the Wedding planning proCess: We were engaged January 1st 2011 - November 5, 2011. We had a ton of help from our families and friends. My Aunt (BJ Nichols) Volunteered to be our wedding planner and did such a great job! We didn’t really use any specific wedding planning tools to get the job done! My sister had gotten married the year before so that helped a lot. The most important thing to me about our wedding was that I really didn’t let all of those small details get to me. I really enjoyed the celebration with our families and friends. Good food, good music, and good times!

adviCe For brides-to-be: Planning a wedding can be really stressful. It is really easy to get lost in the minor details of the wedding. At the end of the day none of that should matter, and what should matter is remembering the real meaning of the wedding and what it’s really about. To me it was about sharing a beautiful moment with people that mean the most to us!

love story: Jared and I both transferred to the University of Tennessee at Martin our sophomore year of college. I didn’t know anyone there when my roommate’s friend invited me to a party. I met Jared that evening and my whole world changed. We began dating in mid November and i t wasn’t long after that we just knew this was forever.

Jared popped the question on Christmas Eve, 2009. That afternoon he acted so giddy and excited; I just thought he was super excited about opening his presents. Afterwards, Jared said, “Wait there is one more present for you.” Jared got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. We were beyond excited! That will always be my favorite Christmas and the most beautiful ornament on our tree.

planning proCess: We had about a year and a half engagement. Jared and I also felt it was important to wait until we had both graduated from college before getting married.

The vision for our wedding was a romantic southern wedding with lake-inspired details. Pickwick has been my favorite place since I was young. The only place I ever wanted to get married was at my family’s lake house. Once Jared agreed, I knew that this had to be a special, mini-destination wedding. Pickwick is such a fun place to go and I wanted it to be a vacation and a fun experience for everyone. I did not want just a “generic wedding.” It had to be unique!

the big day: There were a lot of unplanned events. A tornado touched down and tore the roof off the restaurant where our rehearsal dinner was planned and damaged the landscapping at the reception location, our family’s lake house. For a month we watched the water levels because our house is right on the lake. The night before the wedding, the water rose and did not stop. The day of the wedding, the water was over our dock and only a few feet from entering the tent. Words cannot begin to describe my fear that it would flood our tent. Thank the Lord it did not!

The day of the wedding I was filled with so many different emotions. Once I was in my dress and saw my parents for the first time I could not hold back the joyful tears anymore. My wonderful bridal party kept me laughing when right before the wedding—it occurred to me that I am about to walk out in front of 150+ people! Taking Jared’s hand is something I will never forget. When we kissed I couldn’t help but wave my hands in the air because I was so happy.

The reception was breathtaking—even with all of the extra water. The band played all night long and there was never a moment that the dance floor was not packed with people. We had a blast!!! I loved hearing how much fun everyone was having. That was exactly what I had hoped for.

Marriage and adviCe: I look forward to all of the milestones we get to share together. I love having someone to turn to who knows me better than anyone else. We always have each others best interest at heart. Since the wedding I feel like our love has gotten so much deeper and stronger. We are now our own family which is so exciting. I love making our own traditions and sharing in our families traditions together. Being married is more than I ever dreamt it would be. When you find that one, special person, that is the truest blessing from God.

love story: Brett and I met at work and soon began spending time with each other after I graduated the academy in November 2007. We are both police officers in a suburb of Memphis. As I am a bit of a tomboy, I was fascinated at his love for the outdoors. I think that it is our common interests, which attracted us to one another.

After a long night at work, Brett and I were headed to the lake for the weekend. Once we arrived (around 1:30am), I was tired! It was a chilly night, but he insisted that we walk down to the boat dock. I reluctantly agreed as I grabbed a blanket. We sat down and were talking when he said that he would be right back. He returned from the house with a bottle of Opus One wine and a little box. He gave me the sweetest proposal, and I agreed to marry him!

the planning proCess and budget: We were engaged for 13 months. It was the right amount of time for me to plan. It was overwhelming at times, but our families were really great about helping in anything we needed. We budgeted for 200-230 guests. We are so grateful to our parents for their contributions. We could not have made that perfect day without them.

details: We wanted an outdoor wedding with a great back-up room (on-site) in case of rainy weather. Crown Winery has a beautiful vineyard and a fantastic converted barn with exposed beams on the ceiling. There is a tree in the middle of the vineyard we chose for the ceremony site. J. Kent Freeman, the florist, adorned the tree with flower balls and lanterns. It was stunning. As the sun set behind the tree, the illumination was seen from the little candles inside the flower balls.

In keeping with the natural setting, I chose tan and coral colors. J. Kent Freeman prepared fall orange and coral flowers. The guys wore tan suites, while the girls’ dresses varied in shades from ivory to espresso.

Our DIY project was the guest book table. We borrowed my Aunt’s folding table put it on risers. My Mom and I cut burlap to cover the table. My uncle drew a tree that we used as the guest book. Each guest imprinted the tree with ink to act as leaves and signed their name on their print. I found an antique frame and painted the interior with chalkboard paint to make a welcome sign. My Mom found cute lanterns and candles to decorate the table. It turned out beautifully.

the big day: All-in-all it was a perfect day! As we were preparing to leave the hotel for the winery, I was in the elevator with two bridesmaids, the doors opened and there stood Brett and his groomsmen! He shut his eyes immediately, and I ran to the side of the elevator. Luckily, I didn’t have my dress on yet. It’s a moment we laugh about now.

During the ceremony, we both shed tears. I loved our vows. “I want to share my life with you. I promise, with God’s help to be your loving and faithful wife, to be with you now and always, to stand by you and move with you through whatever our life together may bring. I will love, cherish, and serve you forever.”

I LOVE to dance! My sister and I have “ugly” danced for years. It makes us happy. Brett usually does not partake in this silly display of movement, but he sure did during the reception! We had the time of our lives dancing that night. The band was just incredible! As we left the winery, I told Brett that I wished we could rewind the past six hours and do it all over again.

to Make the Most of Bridal showsTOP WAYS7

Your engaged and now it is time to start planning… you’re in luck! New brides-to-be can gear up for bridal show season. With so many things to see and vendors to talk to, wedding shows can be overwhelming and feel a bit like, well the floor of the New York

Stock Exchange. Savvy brides see through the chaos and making the most of what bridal shows have to offer by way of inspiration, advice and vendor giveaways. With these 7 tips, you can too!

• 1 •Come Prepared. The boy scouts were on to something here… Make sure you have the essentials. have a pen to take notes and sign up for all the wedding day give-aways. Better yet, pre-print mailing labels with your name, phone number, email and wedding date to save a ton of time. also, remember to bring your camera to capture a the wedding inspiration on display… vendors are putting their best decorating foot forward and you will want to remember all that you saw.

• 2 •Don’t eat (a lot!) before you come. Weddings have food and so do wedding shows. Caterers and bakers use this opportunity to showcase great samples of their food so hold off on lunch & come hungry!

• 3 •leave the little ones at home. Children have small attention spans and even with all the cake samples, will quickly lose interest becoming dead weight. It is distracting to have fussy or bored children (or adults!) in your party while you are walking the show floor and trying to talk with vendors. Think carefully about who will join you on wedding show day.

• 4 •Do your homework. It’s worthwhile to familiarize yourself with the services you are still seeking, what questions to ask and who is exhibiting at the show. This helps to maximize the time you have at each booth which can sometimes be limited with busy shows and popular vendors. having other details such as your wedding date or budget mapped out, are also helpful… you don’t want to fall in love with a vendor only to find out that they are booked on your wedding date or out of your price range.

• 5 •Come ready to make a deal. Many of the vendors will offer show-only discounts and specials for brides ready to book.  If you have done your research and have your checkbook in hand, the savings will add up fast.  Keep in mind that vendors are not as busy during the fashion show so if you have you dress, use this time to talk one-on-one.

• 6 •These boots are made for comfort. remember the show floor is big with lots of walking on so leave the heels for later that night and wear comfy shoes!

• 7 •Free tickets! Many local vendors are given free show tickets to hand out to perspective brides that they would like to personally invite to the show. If you plan to set up meetings with vendors before the show, make sure to ask if they will have a booth and you just may get free tickets.

Behind the Story

our love story: Sam and I met while attending college at Mississippi State University. When I first saw him at a mutual friend’s apartment, I pretty much ignored him. Obviously things changed since then! Before I knew it, we became inseparable. I soon realized that Sam had all the qualities I had prayed and hoped for in a spouse. He is a handsome, funny, kind, and superbly intelligent man. Moreover, he was calm no matter what was going on in our lives, which balanced my organized yet often control freak nature perfectly. Sam spent weeks planning the proposal! He surprised me after class one Friday with a bouquet of my favorite flowers and said he had a special date planned. After a day filled with some of our favorite activities, such as feeding the fish at a nearby pond, walking around downtown Starkville, Mississippi, and going out to dinner, Sam took me to the place where he had first asked me to be his girlfriend- the football field at Mississippi State. We went out onto the field, he knelt down, and, after telling me he loved me, asked me to marry him!

the big day: Our wedding day was everything I had hoped for ever since I was a little girl! It was a compilation of joyous, funny, and touching moments. As I was putting on my dress with the help of my mom and sisters, it hit me that I was actually getting married that day! The most emotional moment of the entire day for me was when I first got to see Sam. We chose to see each other before the ceremony in private with only our photographers there. As I walked toward him, I could not but help but feel elated. When he turned around and I saw the wide smile on his face combined with the tears which instantly appeared in his eyes, I realized even further what an incredible man I was getting to marry! The ceremony was lovely, though one of the things that provided unintended amusement for the family and friends who attended was watching each of our brothers attempt to light the unity candles. Because they had not been switched to the ones we were supposed to use in the ceremony, they simply would not light! It was the most funny moment of the day for sure! One of my other favorite moments was when Sam and I got to walk down the marble staircase in the Pink Palace museum to our guests waiting below for our grand entrance to our reception! I felt like such a princess!

Wedding adviCe: To anyone planning their wedding, I would advise you to remember that ultimately what matters is that you two are getting married. No matter what goes differently than you hoped in the planning process or even on the wedding day, as long as you get married to that person, the day is a wonderful success! In the words of my mother, “You getting married is the cake, and everything else is really the icing.” The joining of your two lives is the substance of the day and the entire process. The thing I most enjoy about married life is getting to share all the ups and downs with a fantastic man who understands me and loves me always,no matter what.

Behind the Story

love story: I was in my second year of graduate school at Ole Miss and decided to come home and surprise Tyler. I was almost to his condo and decided to call him and let him know I was in town. When I got there, our dog Neelie greeted me with a sign around her neck that said, “Dad has something to ask you.” Many things were going through my mind, but a proposal wasn’t one of them! Then Tyler sang a verse from our song, ‘Hey Girl’ by O.A.R. (which of course I joined in on because I still did not see where this was going!). I put my bags down, and when I turned around he was down on one knee with a beautiful ring and a big smile on his face. Of course I said yes, and we spent the rest of the night sharing our good news with family and friends!

big day: Tyler and I decided, after much debate, to wait until I walked down the aisle to see each other. Anyone that knows me knows that I am not one for the spotlight, and when the last bridesmaid walked out of the room and down the aisle, I realized how nervous I really was. My dad came to get me and we waited in front of the double doors, listening for the chords of ‘Canon in D’. As the music began, the doors opened, and I saw no one but Tyler. After that, everything is a blur. All that mattered was being with him, having him next to me during our ceremony and for the rest of our lives.

We were engaged for 10 months while we planned our wedding. We had so much help from so many people during the process, including family and friends. My wedding planner was my mother, who did an absolutely amazing job planning a wedding when I had no idea which direction to go. The most important thing to me about the wedding planning process was the fact that Tyler actually helped me do most of it! I never felt overwhelmed or alone in the process, and with the help and support of our families we have a beautiful day to look back on for years to come!

Our vision was to have a traditional wedding to celebrate our future with friends and family. The colors we chose were cobalt blue and silver. The flowers were bright assorted arrangement including hot pink, orange, and yellow daisies which looked fantastic against the cobalt blue bridesmaid dresses.

keep in mind you are responsible for set-up (and clean-up)

After spending weeks creating personal favors, programs and menu cards, these items must move from living room to wedding venue.  i can’t tell you how many exhausted diYers come wedding week are stuck setting out and clean up these projects on wedding day.  But you don’t have to be.  Give yourself a break and see if your wedding planner, caterer or venue staff can take over the set-up (and clean up!).  Most will be more than happy to help, leaving you to sit back and enjoy your wedding.

be realistic about your craftiness

i have a love/hate relationship with Martha stewart.  With ethereal precision, she makes even the most tedious and complicated of crafts appear effortlessly mundane and obvious.  i have learned that i am no Martha... none of us are.  Find diY success by being realistic about your crafting skills (and available time).  With so many other things to worry about on wedding day, aspiring to a professional shouldn’t be one of them.

Procrastinate

The second most common mistake (after assuming you’re a crafting goddess) is waiting until the last minute.  case and point, it took me almost 8 months to stop thinking about refinishing my desk and get to it.  And i am still contemplating changing out the drawer pulls.    decoupaging hundreds of tiny votives placecards seems easier enough.  until you are wrist-deep in white goop, pulling all-nighters leading up to wedding day while you second guess the finished look.  Assume all wedding related crafting will take much longer than expected.  Worse-case scenario, you can still hand things off to the pros if finishing looks unlikely.one of them.

try something for the first time

i catch myself saying all the time, “Well, that looks easy enough!”  Of course i needed 40 grit sandpaper, not 80!  Yeah... so i don’t even know the real difference between 40, 80 or under what circumstances they are most appropriate.  While i have no problem bumbling through trial and error projects, likely never to see the light of day, weddings are different.  under immense stress to figure out how all this wedding planning works, learning a new skill within the same timeline can be overwhelming.  save yourself the stress and hand off first-time projects to professionals.

assume you will save money

not all diY projects will put your wedding budget in the black.  Project costs can quickly add up as mistakes and miscalculations have you purchasing extra supplies.  Particularly, if you end up throwing in the towel and hiring a pro last minute.  in the end, it can be cheaper and easier to work with a professional from the get go, saving you the hassle, time and wasted money.

love story: Devin and I met while I was visiting my sister and dad here in Memphis, TN. I was in nursing school in Portland OR and had no intentions of falling in love 3,000 miles away. But after long phone conversations and frequent flights to Memphis, it was made clear I would have to finish up nursing school and head South seeing that he still had one year of collage left. After 4.5 years he finally popped the question!! While in Seattle for my cousin’s wedding we took a stroll on the pier and it seemed at every given chance a passerby would ruin the moment. Days passed and still, no ring. The second to last night in Seattle, we had a great dinner with my sister and friends followed by a nice walk in the Bellevue park, where he got down on bended knee and said sweet nothings asking me to be his wife. Before he could get the ring out and probably finish his sentence, I said YES!!

the details: I thought long and hard over the color scheme of the wedding. I wanted it to be perfect and therefore changed it about three times until we decided on a Peacock themed wedding. We finally decided on a teal, dark purple, and pewter scheme. We just knew this would be perfect for 150-plus year old stained glass windows of the Cathedral and the various candelabras that were placed throughout. A close friend, Katie, DIY-ed the grooms/groomsmens boutonnieres, which were beyond amazing.

the planning proCess: We were engaged for 14 long months. We did not have a wedding planner but we did have some very key people, such as parents, family friends and our own friends and siblings that helped us coordinate and facilitate details we simply didn’t have time for. There was an extraordinary amount of internet browsing that we used to gather ideas and themes. One of our main goals was to make sure all of our guests were treated with great hospitality and really enjoyed themselves. After all, it was the least we could do to show our thanks and gratitude for them being there to show us such love and support.

the big day: The day was utterly amazing, with not a care in the world for either one of us. Nothing mattered, really, because at the end of the day we would be standing there, promising our love to one another and be married, as husband and wife. The day was perfect!! It was so amazing that we were embraced with love from family and friends from all over the country and even Canada.

Marriage adviCe: Just enjoy the experience and take time to embrace the moments while they lasts. One thing that has surprised us now that we are married, is our love seems so much deeper than before and we find comfort in that.

Debunked! Is wedding advice coming at you from every angle? Determine what’s fact and what’s fiction by debunking these common wedding myths.

IT’S NOT REALLY A WEDDING IF YOU DON’T FOLLOW TRADITION.

The first person to buck tradition and wear white was Queen Victoria (that’s right...brides have not always worn white). This is now taken for granted as standard attire as is a wedding cake, first dance, bouquet toss and something blue. A wedding simply requires an offisciant, license and witness. The celebration of said wedding should be an expression of the couple’s personalities and sometimes breaking the rules leads to new traditions that are a better fit than those of past generations.

Thank you notes can be sent by email. While email is the preferred way of communication for many a message, it is generally frowned upon when thanking your wedding guests. Hand written thank-you notes are far from out-dated and thought tedious to a generation of texters, it must be done. Appreciate this dying art and take the time to communicate as your grandparents. Years later, a friend will dig out your hand written note, carefully saved. not your email.

THe BriDe CAn OnLY Be GiVen AWAY BY Her FATHer. This myth dates back to the days of old, when daughters were literal property of their fathers and a wedding was merely a business deal for dad to expand his fortunes through the sale of his daughter. While the tradition still sticks to this day, i doubt very much that modern brides would describe themselves as part of dad’s estate. Your aisle escort should be a person that played a significant and supportive role in your path to find true love.

The Bride’s parents pay for wedding and reception, groom’s parents pay for rehearsal dinner. Wouldn’t it be nice if Mom and dad still footed the bill but not so with modern weddings. This myth goes out the window as at least a third of wedding costs are now cover by the couple themselves. Families today are pooling their resources and then together, determining how funds are spent for all related events.

5 WEDDING LUCK (AND MARRIAGE) DEPENDS ON A SIXPENCE, SPIDERS AND SUPERSTITIONS.

Here’s the thing about luck... it all depends on the belief that wearing a certain color, carrying a token or changing your behavior will shift future events to their preferred outcome. Luck is mostly used as a way to counter those things completely out of our control and has often been a way of explaining the unexplained. if only making it through the first year of marriage was as easy as saving the top tier of your cake. Make your own luck careful planning, professional vendors and a positive attitude.

68 The Pink Bride Magazine

Vendors will always give a discount if you ask. Wedding vendors are not Mexican bazaars where you haggle the best possible deal. While a vendor may run a promotion, expecting to get a discount because you’re a bride is like expecting your doctor to run a special because you’re a patient. This doesn’t make long-term business sense. instead, plan to attend a local bridal shows for show-only specials or giveaways and be honest about your budget and vision with wedding vendors. Professionals will work with bride to find creative ways to stretch your buck and meet their bottom line.

If you can’t foot the bar bill, offer a cash bar.

cash bars are T-A-c-K-Y... as well as anything else on your wedding day that requires you guest pony up cash is tacky. Remember these are the same dearly loved friends and family that bought a special outfit, traveled across the country, paid for a hotel room and bought you a gift for your wedding. during the wedding day, guests’ wallets should stay in back pockets and purses. Tactful solution… if you are set on offering liquor at your wedding but fear the cost, consider a limited bar with only wine and beer (better yet keg beer, often costing half as much per serving as bottled).

Brides on a budget save big with DIY Projects. With the vastness of today’s World Wide Web, the likelihood of finding a bargain can make diY more costly than one thinks. This is even more apparent when your inner crafter is not well match to make diY magic (but Martha stewart made it look so easy!). And remember time is money, even if it is your time. Be realistic about how much time will need to be dedicated to diY projects, particularly in the last few weeks leading up to wedding day (when the to-do list is never ending and you’d rather be with you family). if the budget is stretch thin, it might make more sense to skip it all together.

Wedding Day is the Bride’s Day.

While you and your groom are certainly the guests of honor, a bride with her sights set on making wedding day entirely about her is likely to be labeled a bridezilla. Weddings are as much about the happy couple and their new life together as it is a celebration for all the related family members. instead find ways to celebrate your family or close friends and their traditions with your new love and the traditions in store for years to come. This ensures your guests feel part of a truly special event.

Your bridal party must have the same number of bridesmaids and groomsmen.

Today’s bride has thrown out all the rules when it comes to bridal parties. With you closest friends and family by your side on wedding day, trying to stay in the box of specific numbers or even genders just doesn’t work. nowadays, your maid of honor is now your man of honor, pooches are playing ring bearer and dancing to the altar is what makes wedding ceremonies personal, memorable and unique.

Behind the Story

our love story: Kyle and I met at a restaurant I managed in Florida. He needed a 3 month job before he took a position with the FAA in Memphis. I knew instantly that I loved him. He started working with me and we became inseparable while he was in Florida. During our long distance courtship that lasted over a year he asked me to marry him on a dinner cruise out of Tampa Florida and I said yes. Unbeknownst to me, he had both of our entire families upstairs waiting to celebrate our engagement. Shortly after that exciting proposal, I moved to Memphis with him and we started planning our big day.

the big day: What a whirlwind! The girls and I woke up at 7 to start getting our hair and makeup done. Julie and Natalie came to the house to get us all ready. We then headed to the church and started dressing for the ceremony. As soon as I got there we noticed a big black mark on the side of my dress and yes, I cried. We tried to get it out but luckily it was in a crease and no one saw it. If I had known then how dirty my dress would look by the end of the night I would have never shed a tear. Everything after that was amazing. We had a full mass, pictures, and then an awesome unforgettable limo ride. After a fun photo session at the Collierville square, we arrived at Memphis National Golf Club for our elegant reception, which was extraordinary. Everyone was singing and dancing. The food was delicious. I wish we could live that day over and over again.

Wedding details: We had a fall wedding so our wedding attire colors were Wine and Burnt Orange. We used Calla lilies as beautiful accents. I began planning our 4 course dinner reception with Memphis National many months before my wedding day and their catering team helped with every detail from the fabulous menu, to the table arrangements and custom linens and even offering suggestions for our DJ. Staying with the color scheme from the ceremony, Memphis National’s Tee Room was decorated using a classic pallet of browns and tans, dim lighting, and candles. Wedding favors for our guests were candy and glass coasters etched with leaves symbolizing our autumn nuptials.

adviCe For brides-to-be: Have Fun!!!!!! It gets so stressful at the end that you need to walk away and not look at anything for a week. Being married is fun and more relaxing. All your anxiety goes away! It truly is worth it.

Behind the Story

love story: Paul and I worked together at Baptist, We started hanging out as friends and within 6 months we were dating. I think what makes us a perfect match is that we compliment each other.

Paul poppped the question early one morning. He had went out and bought a stuffed bear since we were getting married at Teton Trek. He tied all these little ribbons on his neck with the date we had talked about getting married on. And on the bears left arm he had tied my engagement ring.

Wedding details: We were engaged for a year. I did not hire a wedding planner becuase once I met Tim Dalfume at the Zoo I knew he was going help make sure I did not forget anything! He was great.

I drug my mother all over and town and back again planning this wedding. We had such a great time doing it.

The most important thing to me about our wedding was that I wanted it to have a very welcoming feel. We wanted everyone to have fun and enjoy themselves.

My vision was really just simple and elegant. I wanted a lot of candles and flowers with a very romantic fell. And it was all brought to life thanks to Brent Long with Hollidays Florist! He really was my life saver. He and Tim worked so well with me to get everything done the way I thought it should be. My colors were typical fall colors: Brown, Orange, Yellow, Red, and Green

big day: We had a great time and really enjoyed ourselves so we laughed a lot! My family was really having a hard time that day because we had recently ,within the last 3 months, last my grandmother after going in for surgery. Despite being so happy and excited our hearts were filled with such sadness as well. So I had decided I wanted a chair with a white ribbon tied to it her the place where she would have been sitting. And everyone in my family including me, placed a single white rose in the chair in her honor. It was my way of still having her a part of our special day!

One of our most memorable moments was me dancing with his best man! We “owned”the dance floor for a few songs. I had a blast getting slung all over the dance floor. Paul had no idea that his best friend had so many moves!!

Behind the Story

love story: Michael and I met in September of 2005 through friends of ours. Michael’s roommate was dating my roommate so there was nothing fortuitous about us meeting, it was meant to be. On the weekends we were constantly around each other because both of our friends would bring the other one out so we just couldn’t ignore the chemistry between us. We starting dating the next month and have been in love ever since.

Michael proposed in August of 2010. I had been out of town for work, came back in town on a Friday and when I came home, I walked in a house of roses, candles, and soft music. He got down on one knee and proposed. I was so excited, I knew it was coming because we had been talking about it, but I had no idea when he was going to do it. After he proposed we toasted to a glass of champagne and then he took me to the restaurant where he took me on our very first date back in November of 2005. At that point, we were engaged and the wedding process had begun.

planning: Another venue that we had booked for our wedding was supposed to be built above the 100 year flood level, had taken on 2 feet of water inside of it during the flooding. Mid July, right before we were about to send out the invitations, we received an email from them stating that it’s still not open but as of now, the September events are still on. It was at this point that our engagement went from a dream to a nightmare. We found out 2 weeks later that they decided to cancel the September events so we basically had to replan our whole wedding in a little of a month. All our friends and family had already booked their rooms in Tunica so we were really fortunate to find a new venue at the Harrah’s Terrace hotel. Harrah’s was so nice about everything and more then accommodating given the situation. Although this still raised many hurtles because we now could not use our current caterer, florist, and invitations. Despite all the stress involved and cost increases in changing everything, Michael and I were able to keep our heads, work together, and continue to build our love for each other.

Fast forward to our wedding day. It was the absolute best wedding we could ask for given all circumstances. We had our ceremony outside of the Harrah’s Terrace hotel on their patio area. After the ceremony our guest went right inside to the reception area and we all danced the night away.

top 5 Ways to Cut Wedding reception Costs

The average wedding reception eats up nearly half of a couple’s wedding budget... so when you’re looking for big cuts, to the reception

we go.  Starting savings by following my top tips for cutting your wedding reception costs.

1cut your guest list.  i know, i know... you have heard this one before.  But when it comes to finding significant savings, you need to get cutthroat.  The average wedding guest will deplete your budget anywhere from $150-$200 per person.  cutting only 10 guests can make a considerable impact as each added guest increases catering and bar costs, favors, placecards, tables and chairs, linens, centerpieces, invitations, thank-you notes and save-the-dates cards (as well as postage), transportation, welcome baskets... it all adds up.  Beyond financial

costs, many couples feel overwhelmed by large guests and regret not being able to personal connect with everyone on wedding day.  if you want a less stress and decreased expenses, take it  from me and get to cutting.

2Think seasonal.  Generally, when something is in season it costs less.  Rather than ask for a specific type of flowers (say pink tulips for a March wedding), allow your florist the freedom to find a similar style in your desired color that’s in season.  same goes for food... chat up your chef for ideas regarding seasonal ingredients that will be less costly while still meeting your overall vision.  The more flexible you are able to give your vendors, the more savings they are able to pass to you.

3decor double-duty.  A bride looking to stretch her decor budget will get smart when it comes to decor, using bridal bouquets as centerpieces and opting for favors that entertain guests (think photobooths).  Another top secret?  if your venue happens to be fairly popular (whereas regularly weddings occur Fridays, saturdays and sundays), consider becoming a buddy bride.  if Bride A is getting married on a Friday night, who’s to say Bride B can’t reuse the same rented white ceremony chairs on saturday and split the costs.  After all, the rental company won’t

be picking up until Monday.  use the venue coordinator to act as the go-between to these sneaky savings.

4Open Bar Opt-Out:  Here’s a little something to keep in mind... guests will drink what you offer them.  While your cousin may have started with the best of intentions, an open bar encourages travel down the irresponsible path of body shots and taste testing creative beverage combinations.  All on your dime.  As a venue director, it was not uncommon for a festive group of wedding goers to rack up a bar bill of upwards of $7000-$10,000.  nowadays, beer and wine is the expected standard at most

weddings, particularly as hosts are more thoughtful regarding budgets and guests safety.  consider closing the bar an hour early and offer a late night coffee bar.  even better yet, shift your reception to a daytime affair where mimosas served with specialty lemonade and flavored ice water will quench your guest’s thirst.Insider Tip:  Thinking  your wedding guests can chip in to cover bar costs by way of a cash bar is a big no-no.  Remember these are the same dearly beloved friends and family that bought a special outfit, traveled across the country, paid for a hotel room and bought you a gift for your wedding.  During the wedding day, guests’ wallets should stay in back pockets and purses.   Period.

5Hire a Wedding Planner.  no, i’m not trying to pull a fast one over my readers... quite the opposite.    Wedding Planners are pros when it comes to money saving tricks and more than not will stretch a buck further than you ever thought possible.  With the inside track on great deals and established relationships with local vendors, their savvy expertise makes frugal

fabulousness the new black.  As the old adage goes, sometimes you need to spend money to make money.  investing in a wedding planner just might be the best advice i can give you.

Behind the Story

our love story: Jeremy and I met at church. We had grown up in the same area, going to the same school and knowing the same people, but somehow we never crossed paths until much later. We both love to laugh, and we balance each other out. We really are the other one’s best friend. When he asked me to marry him, he surprised me on a moonlit beach. I had gone there with family for another wedding, and I had no idea he would be there. He left right after work, and drove hours to get down there. My mom got me down on the beach that night to take “a walk”, and when I got there, Jeremy called me on my phone. I looked over and saw him standing several yards away from me. I was so shocked! I thought he was just surprising me by just showing up down there for the weekend, until he got down on one knee. He really surprised me- I had no idea!

the big day: I think everything made us laugh, mostly because we were so nervous! What made me cry was seeing how Jeremy looked at me as we stood in front of everyone. I don’t know if there was one really memorable moment, because to me, the whole thing was just beautiful. It all turned out exactly as I imagined. When we were announced as husband and wife, the violinists played a great rendition of ‘All You Need Is Love’ by The Beatles, and Jeremy and I walked down the aisle together with our black Roy Orbison-style shades on. The shades were a last minute decision that was suggested by our wedding coordinator. I’m glad we did that, because it ended up being a good laugh. The only thing that we didn’t expect was having the wrong color tie for one of the ushers, but that was it.

Wedding details: The only things I knew I had to have was an outdoor wedding and strings for the ceremony. I got both! Most of the decor was DIY. I love to make things, and my Mom was a HUGE help with that. Our colors were clover green, champagne and black.

adviCe For brides-to-be: Enjoy the process! Also, don’t forget that this wedding is about the two of you coming together. Trying to please everyone else involved is impossible, so I think it’s best to just remember what the wedding is all about. We look forward to all the fun times we’ll have together now as a married couple. It’s nice having someone so wonderful to come home to at the end of a long day.
