Aim
• So that you can understand the issues involved in developing a ‘Best Practice’ framework for use by stakeholders in the early phases of the urban design and construction process.
• To provide you with an understanding of the nature of my research into sustainability

• An Urban Design & Construction Process for a City may have many processes each at a different phase along the lifecycle.
• External influences will determine how fast/slow a process moves through that life cycle.

Potential Improvements
Literature Review
“I am pessimistic about the human race because it is too ingenious for its own good. Our approach to nature is to
beat it into submission. We would stand a better chance of survival if we accommodated ourselves to this planet and
viewed it appreciatively instead of sceptically and dictatorially.”
(E B White, 1899-1985 cited by Carson, 1962, p7)

The Pilot Study
• The Key themes to emerge from the Pilot Study were as follows:• Sustainability;
• The Design Brief;
• Community Engagement;
• Design Quality & Design Champions;
• Process;
• Some Current & Emerging Issues
• The findings from the Pilot Study confirmed that the linkages between the social, economic and environmental factors are important.
• The Pilot Study also has confirmed the importance of recognising the stakeholders in a process and creating a fluid framework to allow communication of ideas and decisions.
