I started riding motorcycles in 1965 when I turned 16. I have owned and ridden Honda, Kawasaki and Harley. My first Harley was a 1948 Panhead, wish I still had it. I quit riding for about 20 years and then in 2009 I bought another Harley and the best thing I did was to go through F.A.C.T. motorcycle safety course. I retired after 37 1/2 years from the Yakima Police Department, so I have plenty of time to ride now. If anybody is interested in doing some interesting rides. Every year a group of us sign up Bikes and Badges Tour of Duty. The biker that started this chooses 21 locations around the Pacific Northwest and you ride to the location and take a photograph. The rides run from May 1 to Sept 30th. Depending on how many locations you get, at the end you will get a t shirt and a ride patch. It is a lot of fun and you go to some fun locations. If anyone is interested in it look up Bikes and Badges Tour of Duty on the internet.

HOG, Yakima Valley Chapter meeting called to order by Director Dave Anderson. Meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by prayer lead by Danny.

    • Upcoming events schedule passed out to those that were present. Spencer let us know events are also posted on our website.

    • First of the year Hogs & Dogs event next weekend, March 24. Dave reminded members help is needed. Red Cross will also be present executing a blood drive for all whom wish to donate.

    • Ride 365 Challenge was presented to members. This challenge is open to all National HOG members individually and as Chapter challenges. Need to decide on how many miles, we as a group, will be able to do in a year. To participate individually and as a chapter, each participant needs to have their bike’s vin number, odometer reading, & photo with rider & their bike authenticated with Duane Worrell and another appointed member at Owen’s Dealership. The Wenatchee Chapter will also be included with the Yakima Chapter. We will have group awards to entice you to get “authenticated” as soon as possible. A drawing will be held at the close of the challenge (end of October: miles during the toy ride will be added in also) to include miles accumulated for 2500, 5000, 7500, & 100,000. To be eligible for the drawings you must authenticate your miles ridden as close to reaching each category with Duane Worrell or appointed person. This could give you four opportunities to have your name drawn for a bike oil change at Owen’s. If you are registered with the National HOG, your miles will be recorded there also giving you another opportunity to be the fortunate winner of some nice prizes also. Spencer let us know that HOG is working on an APP for this challenge.

    • A ride idea was also discussed regarding “Flat Stanley”. More to be discussed at the next meeting.

    • Duane, along with several other members, attended the City Council meeting in regards to the fees that were being charged for our Toy Ride. The final outcome? No charge. Kudos to those attending the meeting.

    • 50/50 drawing held. Congrats to Bill. Mary Ann was the lucky winner of the hat drawing (or rather, her husband).

    • Ride for a Buck story was shared by Mark Congleton. He rode 1,909 miles on quite an adventure.

    Meeting adjourned.

Donna Trammell, in Dave Anderson’s absence, called the meeting to order following a delicious breakfast. Members joined in on the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer.

    • Kim Boyd reminded members to mute their phones during the meeting to prevent the $5 penalty.

    • Kim introduced Dave from Yakima Veteran’s Coalition. He was presented with a $700 gift card from our first annual Hogs-n-Dogs event to help stock the kitchen pantry. This introduction, however, was interrupted by a ringing of a phone. Oh my, its Kim Boyd’s phone – on the other end was Duane. The ring gave us all a laugh, a relief that it was not one of our phones ringing, and left Kim’s purse a little lighter.

    • Kim also introduced Tom, CEO, from Entrust. Entrust will be sponsoring the next Hogs-n-Dogs event to be held next Saturday, April 21 from 11am – 2pm. Tom thanked the members for all the good deeds that take place due to the HOG group’s involvement in the community. Entrust is a nonprofit group serving a variety of the population. They help people “climb out of poverty”, help “tax users become tax payers”, and the homeless get off the streets. They serve about four hundred people a year, functioning since 1971. They rely on fundraising and donations from the community.

    • Ride 365 – Duane explained the program. Members need to decide how many miles they think they will travel now through November helping to present Our Chapter Challenge Miles to HOG National. Each member needs to register the miles, Vin #, and photo with Duane or Donna Trammell. They will register this information with HOG National. You can earn patches and pins with your miles. With your Yakima Chapter, you are to come into Owen’s showing your addition of 2500, 5000, 7500, & 10,000 miles to your miles that you first registered with Duane or Donna. The sooner you do that, the sooner you can earn a raffle ticket each time you add up those miles. You have the opportunity to earn four raffle tickets (to be put into four different raffle cans). Drawing will be held at the end of this challenge. You have the opportunity to win an oil change, among other items, for your bike.

    • Duane also presented the members with a recruiting new members challenge. The member that recruits the most new members through October will be presented with an oil change for their bike and a gift certificate. Details to follow at next meeting.

    • Duane also thanked everyone that helped with the breakfast prior to the meeting.

    • Duane recognized and welcomed new members attending today and members that have been absent from meetings for a while.

    • Donna passed out an activities calendar April through August.

    • Kim Boyd reminded members of the Hogs-n-Dogs event May 1.2 for YWCA focusing on the Mom’s.

    • Karen, from Wenatchee, invited members to join their group for their annual fundraiser, Run for the Border May 19. Donations will target the Brave Warrior Project focusing on children with illness covering Chelan, Grant County, Douglas, Okanogan areas. The ride departs precisely at 10am. Cost is $15 per rider, $5 per passenger. Raffle tickets $5. Donations for goods and services needed.

    • Karen also invited members to join their Surprise Pirate Run July 28.

    • Progressive Pig Pot explained: each member’s name is in the pot. The pot starts out with $20. A name will be drawn at each monthly meeting. If the name drawn belongs to someone not in attendance, another $20 will be added to the pot.

    • 50/50 drawing, along with 3 more drawings for prizes. Meeting adjourned.

  • Safety Tips: MSF’s Group Riding

    6

Motorcycling is primarily a solo activity, but for many, riding as a group – whether with friends on a Sunday morning ride or with an organized motorcycle rally – is the epitome of the motorcycling experience. Here are some tips to help ensure a fun and safe group ride:

    • Arrive prepared. Arrive on time with a full gas tank.

    • Hold a riders’ meeting. Discuss things like the route, rest and fuel stops, and hand signals (see diagrams on page 3). Assign a lead and sweep (tail) rider. Both should be experienced riders who are well-versed in group riding procedures. The leader should be aware of each rider's skill level before the ride and monitor the riders during the ride.

    • Keep the group to a manageable size, ideally five to seven riders. If necessary, break the group into smaller sub-groups, separated by a few seconds, each with a lead and sweep rider.

    • Ride prepared. At least one rider in each group should a first-aid kit and full tool kit, and all riders should carry a cell phone, so the group is prepared for any problem that they might encounter.

    • Ride in formation. The staggered riding formation (see diagram below) allows a proper space cushion between motorcycles so that each rider has enough time and space to maneuver and to react to hazards. The leader rides in the left third of the lane, while the next rider stays at least one second behind in the right third of the lane; the rest of the group follows the same pattern. A single-file formation with a minimum 2-second following distance is preferred on a curvy road, under conditions of poor visibility or poor road surfaces, entering/leaving highways, or other situations where an increased space cushion or maneuvering room is needed.

    • Avoid side-by-side formations, as they reduce the space cushion. If you suddenly needed to swerve to avoid a hazard, you would not have room to do so. You don’t want handlebars to get entangled.

    • Periodically check the riders following using your rear-view mirrors. If you see a rider falling behind, slow down so they may catch up. If all the riders in the group use this procedure, the group should be able to maintain a fairly steady speed without pressure to ride too fast to catch up.

    • If you’re separated from the group, don’t panic. Your group should have a pre-planned procedure in place to regroup. Don’t break the law or ride beyond your skills to catch up.

    • For mechanical or medical problems, use a cell phone to call for assistance as the situation warrants.

    • If a rider leaves during the ride, the rest of the group should re-form the staggered formation by criss-crossing into the next vacant position. Although it would seem more efficient for the column directly behind the missing rider to move up, we do not recommend it because passing another rider within a lane can be risky.

On the follow page are some common hand signals from MSF.
