THE PIET & IDA SANDERSCOLLECTION At Christie’s in April
Even the kitchen shelf held a Marino Marini
Amsterdam – Christie’s is proud to announce the sale of The Piet & Ida Sanders Collection on 15 and 16 April
2013. Comprising almost 200 lots, the sale features paintings, sculptures and objects by Naum Gabo,
Armando, Jan Schoonhoven, Lucio Fontana, Karel Appel, Marino Marini, Corneille, Anish Kapoor, Christo,
Barbara Hepworth and Gilbert & George as well as one of the finest collections of works by master printerHendrik Werkman. With estimates ranging from €500 to 500,000 the sale is expected to realise in the region
of €3 million.
For over half a century Piet and Ida Sanders collected paintings,
drawings and sculptures, tribal art and antiquities. For the couple it
was important that any work they bought would become part of
their home and daily life and they frequently invited artists to come
and install the work in their house. The collection features
numerous sculptures; once all the walls in their home were covered,
the couple would always find space for a sculpture, if not inside,

then outside. Marino Marini’s delicate sculpture Atomico was placed on the kitchen window sill (estimate:
€180,000 – 250,000, illustrated page one ). The interior of their home in Schiedam was redesigned in the fifties by
the well-known architect Jaap Bakema. The Sanders couple welcomed architects, designers, museum
directors, curators, collectors and the artists themselves at home. They were often frequented by American
sculptor George Rickey as well as by Karel Appel, and their close friend Joel Shapiro.
Leading the Evening sale on 15 April 2013 is Lucio Fontana’s Concetto Spaziale ;
executed in 1954, it is an elegantly articulated work from his pietri 'stones'
series (estimate: €400,000 – 600,000, illustrated right ). Fostering relationships
with a number of artists in Fontana's circle, the Sanders acquired the present
work from the artist's close colleague and sometime art collaborator, Enrico
Baj, the founder of the Nuclear Art movement.
Piet and Ida Sanders donated numerous works to cultural institutions including
the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and in Schiedam, the Kröller-Müller
Museum, Museum Boymans van Beuningen and the Wereldmuseum.
Over the 70 years building this collection they documented each work and
built an archive in which personal correspondence with artists, museums andgalleries were conscientiously recorded by Ida Sanders, resulting in a treasure
trove of art historical information.
