Note: It is better to record just one biblical life application and fully apply that

truth to your life than to write down several applications and then fail to imple-

ment any of them.

Step Six — Write Down Some Concluding Thoughts

Go back over the results of the first five steps, review them carefully, and write

down some concluding thoughts on the chapter. These can include additional

observations, some of your interpretations, themes you have discovered, possi-

ble topics about the Holy Spirit you want to study in the future, scripture or

words you may want to do a study on, and any number of other thoughts that

come to mind.

Step Seven — Write Out One Life Application

Now go back to the possible life applications you listed in Step Five and choose

one of these to work on this coming week. By now you should have had plenty

of practice at writing out applications that are personal, practical, possible, and

measurable. Don’t forget to put your application in the present, not future,

tense. Ask yourself, “What am I going to do about developing a more personal

and intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit, starting now?”

Page 3: The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit - Course Workbook 2015

Page 130

Interpretive questions include asking what or why. Some examples:

• Why did the writer say this?

• What is the meaning of ____________?

• What is the significance of ____________?

• What is the implication of ____________?

• Why is this important?

Step Four — Correlate Your Chapter with Other Scriptures

This step involves finding cross-references for the verses of your chapter in

order

to further explain and understand the meaning and application of the text. It is

based on the principle of interpretation that says, “The Bible interprets itself;

Scripture best explains Scripture.” You can often interpret passages that are not

clear by passages that are. Ask yourself, “How do other Scriptures relate to and

explain this one?”

Step Five — List Some Possible Applications

The last part of the scripture-by-scripture analysis is to write down some possi-

ble life applications. Remember that your goal in this course study is not just

interpretation but life application. Because of the many applications a chapter or

scripture may have, you will only be listing them here. Later on, in Step Seven,

you will choose one of these to write out and to work on for a week.

Personality of the Holy Spirit

He is a Person

A common source of inaccuracy and

extremism about the Holy Spirit and

His work is the attempt to study

and understand Him without first

coming to know Him as a Person.

It is imperative from the perspective

of true worship that we decide

whether the Holy Spirit is a

Divine Person, worthy to receive our unconditional adoration, faith, love,

along with our total surrender to Him. Otherwise we might just think of the Holy

Spirit is simply an influential power deriving from God or worst yet an illumina-

tion that God imparts to us.

Bear in mind that the Holy Spirit is a person, a Divine Person, and we/you do not

know Him as such. Then we/you are robbing this Divine Being of the unconditional

worship, faith, love and total yielding to Him which is due Him and even more for

our benefit. If we think of the Holy Spirit as so many do as merely a power or

influence, our constant thought will be, “How can I get more of the Holy Spirit,”

but if we think of Him in the true Biblical sense as a Divine Person, our thought

will be, “How can the Holy Spirit have more of me?”

Once we take hold of the knowledge and truth that the Holy Spirit is a Divine Per-

son of immeasurable majesty, glory, holiness and power, who has come into our

hearts to make His dwelling place and take ownership of our lives and utilize us for

heavens glory. I cannot think of a more humbling and overwhelming thought than

to know that the person of the Holy Spirit, this Divine Being of majesty and glory

dwells in my heart and is ready to use even me for the kingdom of God.

Provide Chapter Analysis

The Chapter analysis assignment involves gaining a thorough understanding of

the material of each chapter of the assigned text book “The Person and Work

of the Holy Spirit” by, R. A. Torrey. Looking carefully at each paragraph, sen-

tence, and scripture in an intensely detailed and systematic manner.

The Chapter analysis will consist of the following three part seven step method:

a Chapter Summary, a Scripture-by-Scripture Analysis, and a Chapter Conclusion.

In this method you begin with an introduction (chapter summary), which is Step

One, then do a scripture-by-scripture analysis (Steps Two through Five), and

finish with a chapter conclusion (Steps Six and Seven).

Step One — Write Out a Chapter Summary

Paraphrase it. The simplest way is just to rephrase the chapter in your own

words. Summarize it in such a way that you could read your paraphrase to an-

other person.

Step Two — List Your Observations

This step begins the scripture-by-scripture analysis within the chapter. You start

with the activity of observation. In this step you are looking in detail at every

paragraph and scripture and then writing down in your own words everything

you see. You are trying to answer the question, “What does it say about the

Person and Work of Holy Spirit?”

Step Three — Ask Interpretation Questions

After observing all you can in the chapter paragraphs under study, you are ready

to move on to interpretation. This step involves asking questions about scrip-

ture meaning, then trying to find biblical answers to them. In this exercise you

discover the biblical writer’s purpose and message by uncovering what he means

by his idea relating to the Holy Spirit.

*There are nine gifts of the Holy Spirit; these can be classified into three catego-

ries.

A. Gifts that say something - gifts of utterance Prophecy- Tongues- Interpreta-

tion of Tongues

B. Gifts that do something- gifts of power Faith- Gifts of Healing- Miracles

C. Gifts that reveal something - gifts of revelation Word of Wisdom - Word of

Knowledge- Discerning of Spirits

* Note These gifts are as He wills. The Holy Spirit manifests them according to

the will of God.

To be used we must:

Exercise faith

Be willing and obedient

Our motive must be love

The Holy Spirit is a Person and consequently we must come to know Him as

such. There are several Scriptures in the Bible that distinctly provides proof that the

Holy Spirit is a person.

What are the distinctive characteristics, of a person? A person has a Will, a

person has a Mind, a person Speaks, a person has Emotions, and a person

Teaches. Let me be clear When we say that the Holy Spirit is a person. We are

not suggesting or saying that He has hands, feet, eyes, ears, a mouth, and so on.

Because these are not the characteristics of personality but of physicality.

The Holy Spirit, the 3rd person of the trinity, has a personality as much as the Fa-

ther and Son does; therefore has the elements, that are involved within a personal-

ity.

Class Exercise:

Personality Test

Taken from Florence Littauer Personality Plus: “How to Understand Others by

Understanding Yourself”

Note: As Christians, and especially as Christian leaders, we should use person-

ality tests to better understand ourselves and others. They are not intended to

lock us in to one particular personality. i.e. We are not allowed to blame our sin

on our personality type. We are not slaves to our personality. If we are being

changed into the likeness of Christ day by day, The Holy Spirit will sand away

our rough edges so that we will become more like Christ.

_____________________________________________________________

Here Scripture ascribed a will to the Holy Spirit and we are taught that the Holy

Spirit is not a power that we get hold of and use according to our will but He is a

Person of sovereign majesty, who uses us according to His will.

This distinction is of fundamental importance in our getting into right relations

with the Holy Spirit. It is at this very point that many seeking after power and

efficiency in service go astray. They are reaching out and struggling to get posses-

sion of some mysterious and mighty power that they can make use of in their work

according to their own will. They will never get possession of the power they seek

until they come to recognize that there is not some Divine power for them to get

hold of and use in their blindness and ignorance but that there is a Person, infi-

nitely wise, as well as infinitely mighty, who is willing to take possession of them and

use them according to His own perfect will.

When we stop to think about how ignorant we are at times, we must rejoice

that there’s no Devine power to get hold of and use in that manner. On the flip

side, holy joy must come into our hearts when we grasp the thought that there is

a Divine Person, One who never errs, who is willing to take possession of us and

impart to us such gifts as He sees best and to use us according to His wise and

loving will.

The gifts are manifested for the good of the church members “to profit withal”

for the good of all.

Question:

Do people still need healing today?

Do people still need a miracle?

Do people still need prophecy?

( prophecy is for edification, exhortation, comfort.)

*The gifts of the Holy Spirit are for the good of all Christians, of every era.

Question: When will Christians no longer need the gifts of the Spirit? Healing

etc.

Answer: When the Lord Jesus comes and we are caught up to meet him in the

air. ( 1 Thessalonians 4:14-18 )

1 JOHN 3: 2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear

what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him;

for we shall see him as he is.

PHILIPPIANS 3:20-21 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we

look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: 21. Who shall change our vile body,

that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working

whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

Page 7: The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit - Course Workbook 2015

Page 126

* As to if the gifts of the Holy Spirit went out with the early church or

not:

Some use the scripture 1 Corinthians 13:10-13 to prove that the gifts of the

Holy Spirit are no longer in operation, but went out with the early church. Let

us look at the scriptures.

1 CORINTHIANS 13:10-13 But when that which is perfect is come, then that

which is in part shall be done away. 11. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I

understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away

childish things. 12. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:

now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. 13. And

now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

* They use the part that says “that which is perfect is come” and say that it

means when the Bible was completed, or the church was formed.

My answer to this is: why were the gifts given? Vs.7 below

1 CORINTHIANS 12:4-11 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same

Spirit. 5. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. 6.

And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh

all in all. 7. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit

withal. 8. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the

word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9. To another faith by the same Spirit; to

another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10. To another the working of

miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another di-

vers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 11. But all these

worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he

will.

_____________________________________________________________

There is perhaps no passage in the entire Bible in which the personality of the

Holy Spirit comes out more tenderly and touchingly than in EPHESIANS 4:30.

Here grief is ascribed to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not a blind, imper-

sonal influence or power that comes into our lives to illuminate, and empower us.

He is immeasurably more than that, He is a Holy Person who comes to dwell in

our hearts, One who sees clearly every act we perform, every word we speak,

every thought we entertain, even the most fleeting fancy that is allowed to pass

through our minds; and if there is anything in act, word or deed that is impure,

unholy, unkind, selfish, mean, petty or untrue, it grieves the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is also spoken of as a teacher. We read in JOHN 16:26, “But the

Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, He

shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I

have said unto you.”

And similarly we read in JOHN 16:12-14 “I have yet many things to say unto you,

but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come,

He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever

He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come. He shall

glorify Me: for He shall receive of Mine, and shall show it unto you.”

We can see this also stated in The Old Testament, book of NEHEMIAH 9:20

“Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy

manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst” It is a privilege

and humbling for a believer in Jesus Christ to have their mind enlightened to com-

prehend the truth of God, and to have the Holy Spirit daily teaching them the

truth they need to know.

Name three advantages to having the Holy Spirit as your primary teacher in life?

_____________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________

We find the Love of the Holy Spirit brought out in a touching and suggestive

way in ROMANS 15:30, Here we have “Love” ascribed to the Holy Spirit. Each

of us would do well to stop and ponder those five words, “The Love of the

Spirit.” We dwell often upon the love of God the Father. It is the subject of our

daily thought. We dwell often upon the love of Jesus Christ the Son. You cannot

think of calling yourself a Christian without meditating on the love of his Saviour,

But how often have we meditated upon “The Love of the Spirit”? if it had not

been for the love of God the Father looking down upon us in our utter ruin and

providing a perfect atonement for us in the death of His own Son on the cross,

we would be hell bound. If it had not been for the love of Jesus Christ, the

eternal Living Word of God, looking upon us in our utter ruin and in obedience to

the Father, putting aside all the glory of heaven for all the shame of humanity and

taking our place, upon the cross of Calvary and pouring out His life for us, We

would be hell bound. But if it had not been for the love of the Holy Spirit, sent by

the Father in answer to the prayer of the Son, leading Him to seek us out in our

utter blindness and ruin and to follow us day after day, week after week, and year

after year, when we persistently turned a deaf ear to His pleadings. Following us

through paths of sin where it must have been agony for the Holy One to go, until

at last we listened and He opened our eyes to see our utter ruin and then re-

vealed Jesus to us as just the Saviour that would meet our every need and then

enabled us to receive Jesus as my own Saviour; if it had not been for this patient,

long-suffering, never-tiring, infinitely-tender love of the Holy Spirit, we would be hell

bound today.

It is

based on the principle of interpretation that says, “The Bible interprets itself;

The Holy Spirit is also represented in the Scripture as one who prays. We read

in ROMANS 8: 26-27 “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we

know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh in-

tercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth

the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession

for the saints according to the will of God.”

It is plain from this passage that the Holy Spirit is not merely an influence that moves

us to pray, not merely an illumination that teaches us how to pray, but a Person

who Himself prays through and for us. The Holy Spirit walks by our side each day,

and dwells in the innermost depths of our being and knows our needs, even as

we do not know them ourselves, and from these depths makes intercession to

the Father for us.

There can be no doubt to anyone seeking after truth that the Holy Spirit is a

Person of Divine majesty and sovereignty. From all the passages quoted through-

out this Personality section, it is evident that many acts that only a person can per-

form are ascribed to the Holy Spirit.

Person and Work of Holy Spirit?”

i. The Holy Spirit imparts God’s love

ROMANS 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed

abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

j. The Holy Spirit manifests gifts

1 CORINTHIANS 12:7-11 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every

man to profit withal. 8. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to

another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9. To another faith by the

same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10. To another

the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits;

to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 11.

But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man

severally as he will.

1 CORINTHIANS 12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles,

secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings,

helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

k. The Holy Spirit sanctifies

ROMANS 15:16 That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles,

ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be ac-

ceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost.

2 THESSALONIANS 2:13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for

you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen

you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

L. The Holy Spirit produces fruit

GALATIANS 5:22-25 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering,

gentleness, goodness, faith, 23. Meekness, temperance: against such there is no

law. 24. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections

and lusts. 25. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

e. The Holy Spirit will guide

ROMANS 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons

of God.

JOHN 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you

into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that

shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

f. The Holy Spirit will confirm son ship

ROMANS 8:15-17 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear;

but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16.

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

17. And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be

that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

g. The Holy Spirit will empower

ACTS 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon

you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and

in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

h. The Holy Spirit reveals truth

1 CORINTHIANS 2:9-12 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard,

neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared

for them that love him. 10. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit:

for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 11. For what

man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so

the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 12. Now we have

received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we

might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

Page 15

Step Three — Ask Interpretation Questions

After observing all you can in the chapter paragraphs under study, you are ready

to move on to interpretation. This step involves asking questions about scrip-

ture meaning, then trying to find biblical answers to them. In this exercise you

discover the biblical writer’s purpose and message by uncovering what he means

by his idea in relations to the Holy Spirit. Interpretive questions include asking

what or why. Some examples:

• Why did the writer say this?

• What is the meaning of ____________?

• What is the significance of ____________?

• What is the implication of ____________?

• Why is this important?

Step Four — Correlate Your Chapter with Other Scriptures

This step involves finding cross-references for the verses of your chapter in

order to further explain and understand the meaning and application of the text.

It is based on the principle of interpretation that says, “The Bible interprets

itself; Scripture best explains Scripture.” You can often interpret passages that

are not clear by passages that are. Ask yourself, “How do other Scriptures re-

late to and explain this one?”

Note: It is better to record just one biblical life application and fully apply that truth to

your life than to write down several applications and then fail to implement any of them.

Page 16: The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit - Course Workbook 2015

The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit

Page 16

4. The Holy Spirit in a Christian’s life

a. A Christian is one who has been born again by the Holy Spirit

JOHN 3:3-6 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee,

Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4. Nicodemus

saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second

time into his mother's womb, and be born? 5. Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I

say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter

into the kingdom of God. 6. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that

which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

b. A Christian’s body is a Temple of the Holy Spirit

1 CORINTHIANS 6:19-20 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of

the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your

own? 20. For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body,

and in your spirit, which are God's.

ROMANS 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that

ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is

your reasonable service.

c. The Holy Spirit will conform, to the image of Christ

2 CORINTHIANS 3:17-18 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of

the Lord is, there is liberty. 18. But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass

the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even

as by the Spirit of the Lord.

d. The Holy Spirit will teach

JOHN 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father

will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your

remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

f. The Holy Spirit and Prophets

ACTS 11:27-28 And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto An-

tioch. 28. And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the

spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to

pass in the days of Claudius Caesar.

ACTS 21:10-11 And as we tarried there many days, there came down from

Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus. 11. And when he was come unto us,

he took Paul's girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the

Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle,

and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.

g. The Holy Spirit in decision-making

ACTS 15:28-29 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon

you no greater burden than these necessary things; 29. That ye abstain from

meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from

fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

h. The unity of the church by the Holy Spirit

1 CORINTHIANS 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body,

whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all

made to drink into one Spirit.

The Deity of the Holy Spirit

Before one can correctly understand the work of the Holy Spirit, one must

first come to know His Deity. So we begin with the question of Is the

Holy Spirit God? This question is plainly answered in the Bible. There are

Scriptures both in the Old Testament and New Testaments which provides

definite and decisive evidence of the Deity of the Holy Spirit.

The foundation of our study will be built upon eight distinctively Divine

attributes ascribed to the Holy Spirit in throughout the Scriptures. What

are these distinctively Divine attributes?

He is called God, He is Omnipresent, He is Omniscient, He is Omnipo-

tent, His part in Creation, His Works Miracles, He is equal with the Fa-

ther and Son, and He is Eternal. All of these are ascribed to the divine at-

tributes of the Holy Spirit in the Bible.

b. The Holy Spirit and Deacons

ACTS 6:3-5 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of hon-

est report, full of theHoly Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this

business. 4. But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry

of the word. 5. And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose

Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus,

and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: c.

The Holy Spirit calls and sets in the church

ACTS 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over

the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God,

which he hath purchased with his own blood.

EPHESIANS 4:11-12 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and

some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12. For theperfecting of the

saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: d.

Holy Spirit anointed servants

1 CORINTHIANS 2:4-5 And my speech and my preaching was not with entic-

ing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the spirit and of power: 5.

That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of

God.

e. The Holy Spirit warns the church

1 TIMOTHY 4:1-3 Nowthe Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times

some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of

devils; 2. Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot

iron; 3. Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which

God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and

know the truth.

ACTS 28:8 And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever

and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on

him, and healed him.

From these scriptures, we can see the fulfilling of the Lord’s word in

Mark 16:20 and John 14:12.

MARK 16:17-18 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name

shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18. They shall take

up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall

lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

JOHN 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works

that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go

unto my Father.

3. The Holy Spirit in Ministry

a. Directs missionary endeavors

ACTS 8:29-31 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this

chariot. 30. And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet

Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? 31. And he said, How

can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would

come up and sit with him.

ACTS 13:2-3 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said,

Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. 3.

And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent

them away.

ACTS 16:6-7 Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of

Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, 7.

After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit

suffered them not.

In ACTS 5:3-4 , we see the disciples clearly understood the deity of the Holy Spirit

and related to Him as God. The disciples were very holy, and heavenly, and

seemed to be all exceedingly good; but there were hypocrites among them,

whose hearts were not right in the sight of the Holy Spirit, who, when they

were baptized, and took upon them the form of godliness, denied the power of

godliness. There is a mixture of bad with good in the best societies on this side

of heaven; the scripture informs us that tares will grow among the wheat until

the harvest. Nevertheless, we must ask ourselves have we denied the power of

godliness in our personal relationship with the deity of the Holy Spirit.

Read here in HEBREWS 3:7-11 “Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye

will hear his voice, Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of

temptation in the wilderness: When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw

my works forty years. Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They

do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways. So I sware in my

wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)”

Omnipresence is ascribed to the Holy Spirit in PSALMS 139:7-10.

It is of great use to us to know the certainty of the things wherein we have been

instructed, that we may not only believe them, but be able to tell why we be-

lieve them, and to give a reason of the hope that is in us. David is sure that God

perfectly knows him and all his ways, The Holy Spirit of God is all present every-

where at the same time.

Because we are always under the eye person of the Holy Spirit. If the Holy Spirit

is omnipresent, He must needs be omniscient; but He is omnipresent; this sup-

poses the infinite and immensity of His being, from which follows the ubiquity of

his presence; heaven and earth include the whole creation, and the Creator fills

both; read the following scripture and write it out below (JER. 23:24); The Holy

Spirit not only knows both, and governs both, but he fills both. Every part of the

creation is under God’s intuition and influence. David here acknowledges and so

must we also with application and sees ourselves thus open before the Holy

Spirit.

ACTS 9:32-34 And it came to pass, as Peter passed throughout all quarters, he

came down also to the saints which dwelt at Lydda. 33. And there he found a

certain man named Aeneas, which had kept his bed eight years, and was sick of

the palsy. 34. And Peter said unto him, Aeneas, Jesus Christ maketh thee whole:

arise, and make thy bed. And he arose immediately.

ACTS 9:36-37, 40 Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha,

which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and

almsdeeds which she did. 37. And it came to pass in those days, that she was

sick, and died: whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber.

Vs.40 But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning

him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she

saw Peter, she sat up.

ACTS 14:8-10 And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being

a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked: 9. The same heard

Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be

healed, 10. Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and

walked.

ACTS 16:16-18 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel

possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much

gain by soothsaying: 17. The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These

men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of

salvation. 18. And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and

said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of

her. And he came out the same hour.

ACTS 19:11-12 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: 12.

So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and

the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.

ACTS 19:1-6 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul

having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain

disciples, 2. He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye be-

lieved? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there

be any Holy Ghost. 3. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye bap-

tized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. 4. Then said Paul, John verily baptized

with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe

on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5. When they

heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6. And when Paul

had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake

with tongues, and prophesied.

Note: God’s plan in the Old Test. as well as the New Test. has been to em-

power his people by the Holy Spirit, for his purposes and glory.

Note: Jesus told his disciples to wait at Jerusalem until they were endued with

power by the Holy Spirit, which was the Spirit of promise.

2. Disciples Ministered by the Holy Spirit (the miraculous)

ACTS 3:6-8 Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have

give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. 7. And he

took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle

bones received strength. 8. And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered

with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God.

ACTS 8:5-7 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ

unto them. 6. And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things

which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. 7. For unclean

spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with

them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.

Omniscience is ascribed to the Holy Spirit in several passages. For example;

We see by whom all wisdom is uncovered to us: God hath revealed them to us

by his Spirit, 1 Cor. 2:10. The scripture is given by inspiration of God. Holy men

spoke of old as they were moved by the Holy Ghost, and in 2 Pet. 1:21. And the

apostles spoke by inspiration of the same Spirit, as he taught them, and gave

them utterance.

Here is a proof of the divine authority of the holy scriptures. Paul wrote what

he taught: and what he taught was revealed of God by his Holy Spirit, that Spirit

that searches all things, yea, the deep things of God, and knows the things of

God, as the spirit of a man that is in him knows the things of a man, 1 Cor. 2:11.

the Holy Ghost

We find omnipotence ascribed to the Holy Spirit in LUKE 1:35-37. Here in the

scripture Mary shall conceive by the power of the Holy Spirit, whose proper

work and office is to sanctify, and therefore here we see Him sanctify Mary the

virgin for this purpose. The Holy Spirit is called the power of the Highest. Mary

does not ask how this shall be? Mary submits to the faith and fact that a divine

power will undertake this action, not the power of an angel employed in it, as in

other works of wonder, but the power of the Holy Spirit himself.

Mary must ask no questions concerning the way and manner how it shall be

created; for the Holy Ghost, as the power of the Highest, shall overshadow her,

as in the Old Testament when the cloud covered the tabernacle when the glory

of God took possession of it, to conceal it from those that would be curious,

and want to observe the motions of it, and pry into the mystery of it. The for-

mation of every babe in the womb, and the entrance of the spirit of life into it, is

a mystery in nature.

ACTS 2:1-4 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with

one accord in one place. 2. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of

a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3. And

there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of

them. 4. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with

other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

ACTS 8:14-17 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that

Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: 15.

Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the

Holy Ghost: 16. (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were

baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17. Then laid they their hands on them,

and they received the Holy Ghost.

ACTS 10:44-47 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all

them which heard the word. 45. And they of the circumcision which believed

were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also

was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. 46. For they heard them speak with

tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, 47. Can any man forbid water,

that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well

as we?

The Spirit of God was the first mover: He moved upon the face of the waters. In

GEN 1:1-2 The author and cause of this great work is GOD. The Hebrew word

is Elohim. The power of God the Creator. El signifies the strong God; and what

less than almighty strength could bring all things out of nothing?

The plurality of persons in the Godhead, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. This plu-

ral name of God, in Hebrew, which speaks of him as many though he is one, too

us a savior of life unto life, confirming our faith in the doctrine of the Trinity,

though darkly intimated in the Old Testament, is clearly revealed in the New

Miracles is also a Divine work and this is ascribed in the Scriptures to the Holy

Spirit, The destruction of the devil’s power is created by the Spirit of God; that

Spirit who works to the obedience of faith, overthrows the interest of that spirit

who works in the children of unbelief and disobedience. The casting out of

devils is a certain introduction to the kingdom of God. If the devil’s interest in a

The Holy Spirit in the New Testament

A. In the Life and Ministry of Jesus

1. Conceived by the Holy Spirit

MATTHEW 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his

mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was

found with child of the Holy Ghost.

LUKE 1:30-35 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found

favour with God. 31. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring

forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. 32. He shall be great, and shall be

called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne

of his father David: 33. And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and

of his kingdom there shall be no end. 34. Then said Mary unto the angel, How

shall this be, seeing I know not a man? 35. And the angel answered and said

unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest

shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee

shall be called the Son of God.

2. Anointed by the Holy Spirit

LUKE 3:21-22 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that

Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, 22. And the

Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came

from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

This baptism must be administered in the name of the Father, and of the Son,

and of the Holy Ghost. That is by authority from heaven, and not of man; for

His ministers act by authority from the three persons in the Godhead, who all

concur, as to our creation, and to our redemption.

Our agreement to the revelation of scripture, concerning God the Father, God

the Son, and The Holy Spirit is vital. We confess our belief that there is a God,

that there is but one God, that in the Godhead there is a Father that begets,

a Son that is begotten, and a Holy Spirit of both.

Chapter Analysis

Chapter III. The Holy Spirit, the Father and, His Son, Jesus Christ

Chapter IV. Subordination of the Spirit to the Father and to the Son

Page 28: The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit - Course Workbook 2015

The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit

Page 28

Note: It is better to record just one biblical life application and fully apply that truth to

your life than to write down several applications and then fail to implement any of them.

servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

B. From Jesus

LUKE 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your chil-

39. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should re-

ceive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet

glorified.)

JOHN 14:16-17 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Com-

forter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17. Even the Spirit of truth; whom

the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye

know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

JOHN 16:13-14 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you

into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that

shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. 14. He shall glorify me: for

he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

Emblems of the Holy Spirit

What is an Emblem? An emblem is an abstract or representational picto-

rial image that represents aconcept, like a moral truth, or an allegory, or a per-

son, like a king or saint. Although the words emblem and symbol are often used

interchangeably, an emblem is a pattern that is used to represent an idea or an

individual. An emblem crystallizes in concrete, visual terms some construct: a

deity, a tribe or nation, or a virtue or vice

We will utilize the words emblem and symbol intherchangeably throughout this

body of information on “Emblems of the Holy Spirit.” In order to clearly de-

fined objects or its representation, symbolizing aquality of the Holy Spirit.

Keep in mind that great care must be used where Emblems and Symbols are

involved. Scriptural context will determine whether a tree is representative of

something else….or just a tree. It is also said by some that when multiple sym-

bols are used to represent one thing/person, the differing symbols each relay a

different quality.

Biblical Example:

Emblems expressing of God the Father’s nature and character

God’s face: a symbol of his presence Nu 6:25-26; Ps 34:16

God’s arm or hand: a symbol of his power Ps 21:8; Ps 89:13

Dove denote Gentleness, Devotion, Peace and Purity

Supporting Scripture

Review the above supporting scripture and write it out here:

___________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________

The Dove is one of the most quickly identified symbols of the Holy Spirit be-

cause of its specific tie to Jesus’ baptism, there may be additional reasons why

this symbol is used to represent the Spirit. Doves are known as the “sheep of

the bird world” because of their caring and soft disposition. Doves are devoted

to their mates, and when domesticated, devotedly return to their owners. It

could be said that the dove’s demonstration of genteel manner and behavior of

devotion is similar to the Spirit’s attitude toward us

the believer.

Interestingly, doves were also used for sacrifice in

the tabernacle, often named first before other birds.

When the dove is listed as an option for sacrifice, it is

usually for those who cannot provide the required

larger sacrifice. As Jesus is the “Lamb of God” to

symbolize His perfect, ultimate and atoning sacrifice,

so the Holy Spirit is the “Dove of God” as a reminder

that everyone, rich, middle class, or poor may ap-

proach the Almighty God to sacrifice praise, thanksgiving

or receive forgiveness of sin.

Oil denote Anointing and Healing

Supporting Scripture

Review the above supporting scripture and write it out here:

___________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________

Oil had multiple purposes in Biblical times, just as it does today. Oil was the fuel

for lanterns, thus the source of light. Wounds were healed through the applica-

tion of oil. In Old Testament times anointing was important as it set a person

apart. Certain people like priests, kings, and prophets were consecrated with oil.

It was a sign of having received special strength from God. It was a sign of being

specially chosen for a mission by God. In fact the name Christ means ‘The

Anointed One.’

Likewise a discription of the Holy Spirit is "The Anointing" as seen in 1 JOHN

2:27 “But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye

need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all

things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in

him.” Some view this exclusively as a saving name of the Holy Spirit because

they feel the anointing causes people to understand spiritual truth. As such, the

term refers to the illumination of the Holy Spirit.

However the Anointing can also be considered as a restoration or renewal

name. The anointing of the Holy Spirit is also a post-conversion experience sug-

gested by the contrast of the nature and effects of the anointing and regenera-

tion. Because the Holy Spirit is the agent of regeneration, it is to be expected

that similarities are found between regeneration and other ministries of the

same Spirit.

1 JOHN 2:27

Page 34: The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit - Course Workbook 2015

The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit

Page 34

Under the Levitical law two anointings were practiced: the anointing of blood

and the anointing of oil. This was practiced at the cleansing of a leper (see Lev.

14) and the consecration of a priest (see Lev. 8). Both have distinctive applica-

tion for the Christian life. The cleansed leper is a type of one who is cleansed

from sin. And the New Testament identifies the believer as part of "a royal

priesthood" as indicated in 1 PETER 2:9. “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal

priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the

praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light”

This dual anointing represents the twofold experience of believers. They are

first anointed with the blood of Christ (in regeneration), and then with the

"Oil" of the Holy Spirit (in revival). David's desire to be "anointed with fresh oil"

PSALM 92:10 “But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall

be anointed with fresh oil.” Suggests that the anointing is a repeatable experi-

ence with the Holy Spirit.

Why did David in Psalm 92:10 desire to anointed with fresh oil? What is the signifi-

cance of his request at this time?

Healing

MARK 6:13 “And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that

were sick, and healed them.”

JAMES5:14-15 “Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church;

and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the

prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have

committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.”

nakedness: yea, I sware unto thee, and entered into a covenant with thee, saith

the Lord GOD, and thou becamest mine. Then washed I thee with water; yea, I

throughly washed away thy blood from thee, and I anointed thee with oil.”

Wind is very powerful. It can drive sailing ships and turn wind turbines. The

wind can also be refreshing and gentle. The gentle breeze rustles through the

grass and through the leaves in the trees. The Holy Spirit is likewise, the Holy

Spirit refreshes us with the new life of God’s love in our hearts. The Holy Spirit

brings peace, calm and gentleness into our lives.

This symbol is fitting because the ancient Hebrew word for spirit is

“rauch” (Hebrew) and “pneuma” (Greek) both mean wind or breath. Both

words are used for the Spirit throughout the Bible. When we think about our

breath, the breath that keeps us alive, we are reminded of God’s Holy Spirit

within each one of us.

On the day of Pentecost, it was the sound of a mighty rushing wind as the Spirit

filled the upper room and some believe that the Spirit moving upon the face of

the waters was akin to wind. Also, it was the breath of God that brought Adam

to life and Jesus breathing upon the disciples that allowed them to receive the

Holy Spirit.

Step Six — Write Down Some Concluding Thoughts

Go back over the results of the first five steps, review them carefully, and write

down some concluding thoughts on the chapter. These can include additional

observations, some of your interpretations, themes you have discovered, possi-

Page 93

Step Three — Ask Interpretation Questions

After observing all you can in the chapter parapraphs under study, you are ready

to move on to interpretation. This step involves asking questions about scrip-

ture meaning, then trying to find biblical answers to them. In this exercise you

discover the biblical writer’s purpose and message by uncovering what he means

by his idea relationg to the Holy Spirit.

Interpretive questions include asking what or why. Some examples:

• Why did the writer say this?

• What is the meaning of ____________?

• What is the significance of ____________?

• What is the implication of ____________?

• Why is this important?

Step Four — Correlate Your Chapter with Other Scriptures

This step involves finding cross-references for the verses of your chapter in

order to further explain and understand the meaning and application of the text.

It is based on the principle of interpretation that says, “The Bible interprets

itself; Scripture best explains Scripture.” You can often interpret passages that

are not clear by passages that are. Ask yourself, “How do other Scriptures re-

late to and explain this one?”

Chapter X. The Indwelling Spirit Fully and Forever Satisfying

In this step you are looking in detail at every

parapraph and scripture and then writing down in your own words everything

you see. You are trying to answer the question, “What does it say about the

Person and Work of Holy Spirit?”

_____________________________________________________________

On the day of Pentecost the disciples were gathered in one room and the Holy

Spirit came in the form of tongues of fire. Fire leads to two things: destruction

and/or purification. As we know Fire burns and destroys. Fire can melt and

mould metals. However Fire warms us as we gather round it. You’ll see in

Scripture that the same is true of the Holy Spirit, for He brings both destruction

and purification in the believer’s life.

Lets consider destruction of worldly flesh and purification of the soul of the

believer. Think about how the of the Holy Spirit melts away sin (refining us) and

moulds us into the type of people God wants us to be. The Holy Spirit destroys

evil (Purifying us). We can say that the Holy Spirit enkindles the fire of God’s

love in our hearts.

In the Bible, fire is often used to describe the power and presence of God. So it

may be easy to state that fire is just representative of God, but the Bible also has

direct connections between fire and the Holy Spirit.

ISAIAH 4:4-5 “When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters

of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by

the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning. And the LORD will create

upon every dwelling place of mount Zion, and upon her assemblies, a cloud and

smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night: for upon all the glory

shall be a defence.”

ZECHARIAH 4:6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word

* All through scriptures we see the supernatural power of God manifesting to ac-

complish his purposes and to establish his plans. God does this by way of his Holy

Spirit.

In the Old Testament and the New Testament we find the Holy Spirit at work, upon

and through people. Special works of the Holy Spirit will continue in the next por-

tions of this study.

I John 2:29: “If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who prac-

tices righteousness is born of Him” And Paul teaches this through the book of Ro-

mans.

Romans 7:6 “But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we

were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the

oldness of the letter.”

The Holy Spirit gives us new birth as children of God (John 1:12-13; 3:3-8) and then

assures us of our new status as adopted children and heirs of God, which is our

hope of eternal glory (Romans 5:1-5; 8:14-17; Galatians 4:4-7). The Spirit is the One

who enables us as newborn Christians to call the Creator of the universe Abba

(Daddy, Papa) and to know that, as his children and heirs, we are no longer slaves

to sin.

This symbol the cloud could easily be argued as representing God Himself

rather than the Holy Spirit. However because the presence of God is often dis-

played through workings of the Holy Spirit, and the customary references to fire

and cloud together in the Old Testament, I believe the presence of the Holy

Spirit is also represented (symbolized). The New Testament uses the word

“glory” more to describe a tangible presence of God, explaining why I’ve com-

bined the two here.

EXODUS 13:21-22: “And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a

cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to

pillar of fire by night, from before the people.”

tion of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and, be-

hold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud.”

EXODUS 13:21-22

The Institutes

Page 89

The new birth is invisible, he likens it to the wind. It is not from the water beneath

(the flesh) but of the Spirit (literally, in the Greek, from above). He is contrasting

the natural (flesh) to the spiritual (Spirit).

There is always a distinction between water and Spirit baptism. Scripture tells us

that John came baptizing in water but that, “There is one who will come after me. . .

He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit” (Mk. 1:7-8; Mt. 3:11; Jn. 1:33). The flesh

and the spirit are two different properties, two different things. So there are two

births- one of the flesh and the other of the spirit that comes from God. John 3:6-7

"That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

"Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.'

The term born of water is used only once by John but the term born

of God (the Spirit) he uses numerous times.

I John 4:7: “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who

loves is born of God and knows God” This is the love of God shed in a believers

heart by believing the gospel.

I John 5:1: “Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and every-

one who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him.” This of

course has to do with the gospel.

I John 5:4: “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the

victory that has overcome the world-- our faith” The new nature of the spirit of

God has our affections change toward God and not toward the fallen world.

I John 3:9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in

him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God. ”

I John 5:18: “We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has

been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.” There is

life change where one lives more in righteousness than they do in the old way of life

in sin.

Born Again by the Holy Spirit

JOHN 3:3-6 “Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Ex-

cept a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith

unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time

into his mother's womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee,

Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom

of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit

is spirit.”

Jesus is having a conversation with Nicodemus, who was a Pharisee. Jesus spoke to

Nicodemus in accordance to the Pharisee’s teaching; to be born of water meant to

be born physically. This is proved by Nicodemus remark who thought to be born

again meant a physical birth “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a

second time into his mother's womb and be born?

In verse 5, Jesus proceeds to say, “Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, you

cannot enter the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus, who was a Pharisee, believed like

the other Jews that because he was born a Jew and kept God’s ordinances that he

should automatically enter into the kingdom of God.

However, Jesus explains this is not enough. In verse 6, Jesus Himself interprets the

water as flesh (a physical birth) "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is

born of the Spirit is spirit." Jesus says of being born of water is to be born of the flesh.

Jesus explains the difference, telling Nicodemus you have already had a physical

birth, you are in need of another birth “Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be

born again.' Literally from the Spirit above to enter the kingdom. You must be born

again “that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." The new birth from above is a second

birth which gives us eternal life.

The Holy Spirit is often described in the form of: rain, dew, rivers and

springs. Possibly the most descriptive of Holy Spirit’s cleansing and re-

newing work in us. In like manner to water the Holy Spirit within ever

believer should be allowed to overflow to the world around them. Like-

wise, the work of the Holy Spirit is often compared to taking what was

once desert and barron then turning it into fruitful and productive

ground. Water being the vital key for that conversion.

Conviction of sin is no slight natural work upon the heart. It is all in vain that

you read your Bibles and hear us preach, unless the Spirit uses the words to give

feeling to your dead hearts. If we could prove to you with the plainness of arith-

metic, that the wrath of God is abiding on you, still you would sit unmoved.

The Spirit alone can impress your heart. The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin and

enables us to repent (John 16:7-11). Actually, it is the Holy Spirit’s convincing us

of the holiness, love, and goodness of God in Jesus Christ that causes us to see

our own actions as sin; the Holy Spirit then moves us from mere regret into the

decision to turn toward the new life he enables in us.

JOHN 16:7-11 “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go

away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I

will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and

of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of right-

eousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because

the prince of this world is judged.”

the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine

courses.”

JOHN 7:37-39 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried,

saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me,

away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I

will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall

keep my judgments, and do them.”

EPHESIANS 5:26-27 “That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of

spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.”

Conviction of Sin

Conviction of sin, by the Holy Spirit, issuing in conversion is not a mere head

knowledge of what the Bible says against sin. Many unconverted men read their

Bibles, and have a clear knowledge that their case is laid down there. They know

very well that they are in sin, and they know just as well that the wages of sin is

death. One man lives a swearer, and he reads the words, and understands them

perfectly: "The Lord will not hold him guiltless—who takes his name in

vain" (Exodus 20:7; Deu 5:11). Another man lives in the lusts of the flesh, and he

reads the Bible and understands those words perfectly: "No immoral person has

any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God" (Ephesians 5:5). Another

man lives in habitual forgetfulness of God—never thinks of Him, and yet he

reads: "The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget

God" (Psalm 9:17). Now in this way, most men have a head knowledge of their

sin and of its wages—yet this is far from true conviction of sin.

It is to feel the loathsomeness of sin. A child of God has seen the beauty and

excellent love of God; and therefore, sin is loathsome in his eyes. But no uncon-

verted person has seen the beauty and excellent love of God; and therefore, sin

cannot appear dark and loathsome in his eyes.

It is a just sense of the dreadfulness of sin. It is not mere knowledge that we

have many sins and that God's anger is revealed against them all; but it is a heart

-feeling that we are under sin. It is a sense of the dishonor it does to God, and

of the wrath to which it exposes the soul.

Wine Uninhibited, Celebration, Abundant Blessings

In the ancient Near East, with its scarcity of water, wine was a necessity rather

than a luxury, so it came to symbolize sustenance and life. Due to its close rela-

tionship to the ongoing life of the community, in association with grain and oil,

wine is also representative of the covenant blessings God promised to Israel for

obedience, and which He would withhold for disobedience. Finally, wine also

represents joy, celebration, and , uninhibitedness, expressing the abundant bless-

ings of God.

In todays culture man made wine can generate very negative results. Negatively,

wine can be abused, causing a person to lose self-control. Scripture teaches us

in PROVERBS 20:1 “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is

deceived thereby is not wise.” However Paul instructs us in EPHESIANS 5:18 to

cease being drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but rather be filled with the

Spirit."

Some say, But Jesus made the water into wine. However, Jesus did not intend

for the wedding guests to get drunk. He provided the right amount for the num-

ber of people in attendance to enjoy themselves but not lose control.

While the world seeks stimulation and merriment from alcohol, it is the Holy

Spirit who brings the Christian true joyfulness from the Spirit of God and en-

hancement of their natural abilities. Where alcohol provides a temporary lift

followed by a let-down, the Christian’s life through the Holy Spirit can be in-

spired without dissipation.

Seal and Guarantee denote Ownership, Deposit

Supporting Scripture

The Holy Spirit seals those who trust in Christ. The Holy Spirit's presence in

our life is God's guarantee that believers are owned by Him and secure in Him.

Since the Holy Spirit's task is to apply Christ's work to God's people, he anoints

believers "in Christ" the moment they believe. A believer is a secure member of

God's family, only because the Spirit is applying the promises concerning Christ

in their life. His sealing merely encompass the initial down payment that antici-

pates the future, full redemption of God's marked possession.

It was customary in the first century and continued practice today to offer a

deposit as a guarantee of the person's commitment to honor a contractual

agreement. Additionally official documents in the past and some documents

today, were sealed with hot wax. Then an imprint was made on the wax with

the official seal of the person sending the document. In a similar way, we are

“sealed” by the Holy Spirit to show that we are forever part of God's family.

until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.”

Scriptures Inspired by the Holy Spirit

One of the amazing facts about the Bible being inspired by the Holy Spirit is that

though it was written by a wide diversity of authors (as many as 40) over a pe-

riod of 1600 years, from many different locations and under a wide variety of

conditions, the Bible is uniquely one book, not merely a collection of sixty-six

books. Its authors came from all walks of life. Some were kings, some peasants,

still others were philosophers, fishermen, physicians, statesmen, scholars, poets,

and farmers. They lived in a variety of cultures, in different experiences and

often were quite different in their makeup. Regardless of this diversity, as one

book, it is bound together by historical sequence, type, and prophetic fulfillment.

The Spirit of God not only once inspired those who wrote scriptures, but con-

tinually inspires, and supernaturally assists those that read it with earnest prayer.

Hence it is so profitable for doctrine, for reproof or conviction of them that are

in error or sin, for the correction or amendment of whatever is amiss, and for

instructing or training up the children of God in all righteousness. John

Wesley, Explanatory Notes Upon the New Testament (London: Epworth Press,

1966), 794.

The simplest way is just to rephrase the chapter in your own

words. Summarize it in such a way that you could read your paraphrase to an-

other

person.

Step Two — List Your Observations

This step begins the scripture-by-scripture analysis within the chapter. You start

with the

activity of observation. In this step you are looking in detail at every parapraph

and

scripture and then writing down in your own words everything you see. You are

trying to answer the question,“What does it say about the Person and Work of

Creation

God sends His Spirit forth and creation takes place. If whatever He sends His

Spirit into has already been created, then transformation takes place. Transfor-

mation takes place from a state of destruction to a state of purity, cleanness,

construction, and order is created from confusion. This was what happened in

Genesis. The Spirit of God brooded over the face of the deep, looking down on

the earth's state of confusion, and then the Holy Spirit came forth. Out of that

confusion came order, beauty, and life.

GENESIS 1:1-2 “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the

earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And

the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Special Works of the Holy Spirit

The Bible notes several roles the Holy Spirit plays in the lives of people today.

First, the Holy Spirit provides conviction of sin to all people. JOHN 16:8, "And

when he the Holy Spirit comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and

righteousness and judgment."

The Holy Spirit has Special Works that He perform. For the unbeliever the

Holy Spirit has a ministry of leading them to the Son. He has been sent to con-

vict unbelievers of sin, righteousness and judgment. Sin-To show they are sinful,

having fallen short of God’s standard. Righteousness- To convict them of not

having a righteousness of their own to be accepted by God, but in need of God’s

righteousness that he freely gives through accepting the gospel. This righteous-

ness is found only in Christ. And judgment- in that there is more than meets the

eye, that there is a time they will have to answer for how they lived their life.

There is a heaven and hell, we know that there is more than just a physical life

For believers in Christ, the Holy Spirit works in additional ways. One of these

roles is to serve as a helper or comforter.JOHN 14:16-17records Jesus saying,

"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you

forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it

neither sees him nor knows him." The Greek word translated as "Helper" or

"Comforter" (KJV) refers to one who is called alongside another, providing the

idea of a guide or encourager during times of need. This takes place as God's

Spirit indwells the believer from the point of salvation (ROMANS 8:9;1 CORIN-

THIANS 6:19-20).

The Institutes

Page 55

Step Three — Ask Interpretation Questions

After observing all you can in the chapter parapraphs under study, you are ready

to move on

to interpretation. This step involves asking questions about scripture meaning,

then trying to

find biblical answers to them. In this exercise you discover the biblical writer’s

purpose and

message by uncovering what he means by his idea relationg to the Holy Spirit.

It is

based on the principle of interpretation that says, “The Bible interprets itself;

Page 56

Note: It is better to record just one biblical life application and fully apply that truth to

your life than to write down several applications and then fail to implement any of

them.

Step Six — Write Down Some Concluding Thoughts

Go back over the results of the first five steps, review them carefully, and write down

some concluding thoughts on the chapter. These can include additional observations,

some of your interpretations, themes you have discovered, possible topics about the

Holy Spirit you want to study in the future, scripture or words you may want to do a

study on, and any number of other thoughts that come to mind.

Step Seven — Write Out One Life Application

Now go back to the possible life applications you listed in Step Five and choose one of

these to work on this coming week. By now you should have had plenty of practice at

writing out applications that are personal, practical, possible, and measurable. Don’t

forget to put your application in the present, not future, tense. Ask yourself, “What am

I going to do about developing a more personal and intimate relationship with the Holy

Spirit, starting now?”

Titles of the Holy Spirit

“In the beginning God created

the heaven and the earth. And

the earth was without form, and

void; and darkness was upon the

face of the deep. And the Spirit

of God moved upon the face of

the waters.” GENESIS 1:1-2.

What a profound and intimate

knowledge by the Spirit of

God, that he must be equal with God; and such an intimate union, that He is

called “the Spirit of God,” and be one with God, as the human soul can be called

“the spirit of the man,” and be one with him.

In the New Testament, this name indicates that the Holy Spirit is of God, yet

not the Father or the Son as seen in the baptism of Jesus when all three persons

are present. After Jesus was baptized, immediately He went up from the water.

The heavens opened suddenly for Him, and He along with everyone present saw

the Spirit of God descending like a dove, upon Him. And there came a voice

from heaven saying “This is My beloved Son. In whom I am well pleased.” It

appears that the Person of the Holy Spirit did not indwell Jesus but was upon

Him as with Old Testament saints.

Matthew used the Greek word (epi) meaning “on” or “upon” when he quoted

Isaiah, ascribing Christ’s healing of the sick and His preaching to the work of the

Holy Spirit. As see here in MATTHEW 12:18 “Behold my servant, whom I have

chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon

him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.”

Spirit of God

Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus attributed His miracles to the Spirit of

God. As indicated in MATTHEW 12:28 “But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of

God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.”

The Spirit of God has an exact and thorough knowledge of the things of God,

and only God knows Himself. Scripture attest to this fact in 1 Corinthians 2:11

“For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in

him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.”

“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwel-

leth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the

temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.” (1 CORINTHIANS 3:16-17) Paul

identified the church and saints at Corinth as the Temple of God.

Paul was citing LEVITICUS 26:11-12 “And I set my tabernacle among you: and

my soul shall not abhor you. And I will walk among you, and will be your God,

and ye shall be my people.”

We see in Leviticus 26:11-12 God predicted dwelling among His people. Now

scripture?

Spirit of Truth

There are two levels of understanding contained when reading and studying

scripture and thus the precious truths of the Bible. One level involves what the

words of scripture actually mean in whichever language those words were writ-

ten. However the Bible says there is a second level of understanding that in-

volves the spiritual truths contained in those God-inspired words. Jesus taught

that only those to whom God grants His Spirit can clearly understand His words

at this level.

This truth is illustrated well by Jesus Christ’s explanation to His disciples in

MATTHEW13:11, 13 when they asked Him why He spoke to the people in

parables.

“Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of

heaven, but to them it has not been given. … Therefore I speak to them in par-

ables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they

understand”

The disciples themselves often did not understand the spiritual intent of Jesus’

words. But He did not leave them without hope of understanding. Jesus told

them, “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them

now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all

truth” (John 16:12-13)

Why did Jesus knew they would not be able to understand the spiritual meaning

of His words yet. ?

This step begins the scripture-by-scripture analysis within the chapter. You start

with the activity of observation. In this step you are looking in detail at every

parapraph and scripture and then writing down in your own words everything

you see. You are trying to answer the question, “What does it say about the

Person and Work of Holy Spirit?”

ISAIAH 63:10 “But they rebelled, and vexed his Holy Spirit: therefore he was

turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.”

ISAIAH 63:11 “Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, say-

ing, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his

flock? where is he that put his Holy Spirit within him?”

LUKE 11:13 “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your chil-

dren: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them

that ask him?”

JOHN 7:39 “But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should

receive: for the Holy Spirit was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet

glorified.”

ACTS 2:4 “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with

other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

Supporting Scripture: The Spirit of Truth

2 PETER 1:20-21 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any

private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man:

but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost

2 TIMOTHY 3:16-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profit-

able for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

PSALM 25:5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my

salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.

JAMES 1:18 “of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should

be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.”

JOHN 16:13-14 “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you

into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that

shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall

receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.”

The Comforter

It was prophesied in the Old Testament that the Comforter would be sent.

Joel 2:28 “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit

upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men

shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:”

What did God declare in Acts 2:17 about His Spirit?

___________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________

The Comforter would come after Christ Jesus came and would teach spiritual

things, and help believers remember spiritual things. JOHN 14:26 “But the

Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he

shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I

have said unto you.”

JOHN 16:7 “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; it is expedient for you that I go

away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart,

I will send him unto you.”

EPHESIANS 4:8 “Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led

captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.” Also: Acts 2:33

It is the Comforter who helps us understand the things of God, including His

Word. It is He that helps us understand prophecy. JOHN 16:13 “Howbeit when

he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not

speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will

shew you things to come.”

In this commandment communicated in Matthew from Jesus to His disciples; the

singular use of “name” here concludes that all three Persons of the Trinity are

equally related to one another. This threefold distinction within the Trinity is

apparent in Paul’s benediction to the church at Corinth.

The Apostle Peter identified the Holy Spirit as God.

ACTS 5:3-4 “But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to

the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it re-

mained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own

power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied

unto men, but unto God.”

Paul identified the Holy Spirit as “the voice of the Lord” Paul said, “The Holy

Spirit spoke the truth to our forefather when he said through Isaiah the

prophet” and then quoted (Isaiah 6:9-10) Reade this passage:

ACTS 28:25-27 “And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed,

after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the

prophet unto our fathers, Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall

hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive: For the

heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their

eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their

ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should

heal them.”

Holy Spirit

With the first occurrence of “the Holy Spirit” in the New Testament, we en-

counter the unfathomable, the Spirit’s role in the incarnation of the Son of God,

Jesus Christ.

The birth of Jesus Christ came about this way: After His mother Mary had been

engaged to Joseph, it was discovered before they came together that she was

pregnant by the Holy Spirit. Matthew and Luke, which give the earthly geneal-

ogy account of Jesus, are each careful to mention His miraculous conception

through the Holy Spirit:

MATTHEW 1:18 “Now the _____ of ____________ was on this wise: When

as his mother _______ was espoused to _________, before they came to-

gether, she was found with child of the ____________.”

LUKE 1:35 “And the ______ answered and said unto her, The _________ shall

come upon thee, and the ______ of the ________ shall overshadow thee:

therefore also that ____ _____ which shall be born of thee shall be called the

____ __ _____.”

All New Testament writers recognize Jesus as at once both human and divine,

but what about the Holy Spirit. Immediately, we learn two things about the Holy

Spirit. First, the Spirit possess the power of the Most High. Secondly, the

Spirit is distinct from the Son. And from the last occurrence of the Holy Spirit in

Matthew, we learn the Spirit is distinct from the Father.

MATTHEW 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the

name of ___ ______, and of ____ _____, and of the _____ ______:

The Comforter points to and glorifies Christ.

JOHN 15:26 “But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto

you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from

the Father, he shall testify of me:”

I CORINTHIANS 12:3 “Wherefore I give you to understand, that no

man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no

man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.”

The Comforter lives inside a believer. Only the saved can receive

Him. I

JOHN 7:39 “(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe

on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because

that Jesus was not yet glorified.)”

JOHN 14:17 “Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot re-

ceive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know

him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”

ACTS 2:38 “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized

every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins,

and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”

Page 64

ACTS 10:45 “And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as

many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the

gift of the Holy Ghost.”

The Jews were surprised the Gentiles could also receive the Spirit.

LUKE 11:13 “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your chil-

dren: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them

that ask him?”

EPHESIANS 1:13 “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of

truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were

sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise,”

Note: Some teach that the Holy Spirit goes from our lives when we sin and

comes back when we are “good”. The Bible does not teach this. The Comforter

never leaves a person, but He can be saddened when we choose sin in our lives.

JOHN 14:16 “and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with

you forever;”

EPHESIANS 4:30 “And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed

unto the day of redemption.”

Why are we being told this in I THESSALONIANST 5:19 “Quench not the

Spirit.”

ROMANS 8:14-16 “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons

of

God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have re-

ceived the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth

witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.”

EPHESIANS 1:5 “Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus

Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will.”

GALATIANS 4:5-7 “To redeem them that were under the law, that we might

receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the

Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no

more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.”

JEREMIAH 3:19 But I said, How shall I put thee among the children, and give thee

a pleasant land, a goodly heritage of the hosts of nations? and I said, Thou shalt

call me, My father; and shalt not turn away from me.

GALATIANS 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

2 CORINTHIANS 6:18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons

and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

REVELATION 21:7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his

God, and he shall be my son.

Spirit of Adoption

The “Spirit of Adoption” refers to taking a sinner and making him or her a child

of God. The feeling of affection, love, and confidence which pertains to children;

not the subservient, trembling spirit of slaves, but the temper and affectionate

regard of son and daughters. Adoption is the taking and treating a stranger as

one’s own child. It is applied to Christians because God treats us as His children;

God receives us into this relationship, though we were by nature strangers and

enemies.

We by nature had no claim on God; therefore the act of providing the Spirit of

Adoption is one of mere kindness, an act of pure sovereign love. We are now

under Gods protection and care. That we are bound to manifest toward God

the spirit of children, and yield to him obedience. It is for this that Christians are

called the sons of God. JOHN 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them gave

He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name.

It is the role of the Holy Spirit not only to make us a part of God’s family, but

also to make our adoption a reality as He helps us to cry out, “Abba, Father” If

the Spirit is not divine, He cannot take us into God’s family.

What makes the statement above a relevant to your life and the relationship you

currently have with the Holy Spirit?

Eternal Spirit/ Spirit of Holiness

The Eternal Spirit and Spirit of Holiness refer to the Third Person of the Trinity

which raised Christ from the dead, and to the divine nature of Jesus Christ, as

He is Holy.

These titles are of the more difficult in Scripture. They are used in unity with

Christ’s sacrifice. HEBREWS 9:14 ”How much more will the blood of the Mes-

siah, who through the Eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God,

cleanse our consciences from dead works to serve the living God?”

Concerning His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who was a descendant of David

according to the flesh and was established as the powerful Son of God by the

resurrection from the dead according to the Spirit of holiness. ROMANS 1:4

“and declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness,

by the resurrection from the dead”

Page 66: The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit - Course Workbook 2015

The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit

Page 66

There are five possible understandings conjectured for the words “the

Eternal Spirit.”

1. It refers to the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Trinity.

2. It refers to the divine nature of Christ.

3. It refers to endless or immortal life.

4. It refers to the glorified Savior.

5. It refers to divine influence.

Since we know the Holy Spirit is represented here, the title “Eternal Spirit”

speaks of His deity for only God has existed eternally. Scripture teaches us that

Jesus Christ made His great sacrifice under the influence of the Eternal Spirit. He

was driven by the Spirit to go into the desert to be tempted by Satan. More-

over, He was led to be a sacrifice, like a lamb to the slaughter. (Mark 1:12; and

Isaiah 53:7).

Eternal, Everlasting – without end

Applied to Trinity:

PSALMS 90:2 “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst

formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art

God. “

PROVERBS 8:23 “I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the

earth was.”

HEBREWS 9:14 “How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the

eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead

works to serve the living God?”

ROMANS 8:11 “But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell

in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal

bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you”

ROMANS 8:2 “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free

from the law of sin and death.”

ROMANS 8:9 “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the

Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is

none of his.”

ROMANS 4:24-25 “But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on

him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; Who was delivered for our

offences, and was raised again for our justification.”

ACTS 13:29-30 “and when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they

took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre. But God raised him

from the dead.”

ACTS 2:23-24 “ Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowl-

edge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and

slain: Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it

was not possible that he should be holden of it.”

1 CORINTHIANS 15:3-4 “For I passed on to you as most important what I also

received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was

buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.
