FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Jesus’ words in the Gospel this weekend can be startling and make us uneasy. As commentators remind us, the term hate used here denotes attitudes and modes of action, not emotion. The point is not about how we feel towards parents and family. Rather one’s effective attitude when it comes to the choice for the kingdom. We are reminded to put nothing above our desire to live as true disciples of Christ. This builds on what we heard weeks ago that Jesus will be a cause of divisions even among family members. And when we’re told to strive to enter heaven through the narrow gate. Throughout his gospel, Luke calls Christian disciples to identify with the poor and outcast and to recognize their dependence on God. As we press forward, we realize that the Christian life is not about planning things out perfectly. Rather, it’s learning how to perfectly rely on God as we work to bring his plan of salvation for us to completion. Please pray for seminarian Eugene Joseph, who will be ordained to the transitional diaconate this Saturday. Pray for more vocations to the priesthood in our diocese!Next Sunday (September 15), I’ll offer Mass for Family Day at Mount Aloysius. The residents have been enjoying our monthly prayer service. The men at Mt. Aloysius contribute in many ways to our community. We’re grateful for their presence among us! RCIA begins on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. in the Lower Level of the PCC! Please encourage those family and friends interested in becoming Catholic to attend. We’ll need to know in advance if we have anyone interested. In Christ Jesus,Fr. Hartge
CATHECHISM CORNER:2544: Jesus enjoins His disciples to prefer Him to everything and everyone, and bids them “renounce all that [they have]“ for His sake and that of the Gospel. Shortly before His passion, He gave them the example of the poor widow of Jerusalem who, out of her poverty, gave all that she had to live on. The precept of detachment from riches is obligatory for entrance into the Kingdom of Heaven.
931: Already dedicated to Him through Baptism, the person who surrenders himself to the God he loves above all else thereby consecrates himself more intimately to God’s service and to the good of the Church. By this state of life consecrated to God, the Church manifests Christ and shows us how the Holy Spirit acts so wonderfully in her. And so the first mission of those who profess the evangelical counsels is to live out their consecration. Moreover, “since members of institutes of consecrated life dedicate themselves through their consecration to the service of the Church they are obliged in a special manner to engage in missionary work, in accord with the character of the institute.“
932: In the Church, which is like the sacrament – the sign and instrument – of God’s own life, the consecrated life is seen as a special sign of the mystery of redemption. To follow and imitate Christ more nearly and to manifest more clearly His self-emptying is to be more deeply present to one’s contemporaries, in the heart of Christ. For those who are on this “narrower“ path encourage their brethren by their example, and bear striking witness “that the world cannot be transfigured and offered to God without the spirit of the beatitudes.“
933: Whether their witness is public, as in the religious state, or less public, or even secret, Christ’s coming remains for all those consecrated both the origin and rising sun of their life: For the People of God has here no lasting city, . . . [and this state] reveals more clearly to all believers the heavenly goods which are already present in this age, witnessing to the new and eternal life which we have acquired through the redemptive work of Christ and preluding our future resurrection and the glory of the heavenly kingdom.
