SEEING WHAT’S REALLY

THERE

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson went on a camping trip. After a good meal and a bottle of wine, they lay down for the night and went to sleep.

Some hours later, Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend. “Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see.” Watson replied, “I see millions and millions of stars.” “What does that tell you?” Holmes asked. Watson pondered for a minute. “Astronomically, it tells us that there are

millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets, Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Homologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, I can see that God is all-powerful and that we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day to-morrow? What does it tell you?”

Holmes was silent for a minute, and then spoke. “Watson, you idiot, somebody has stolen our tent!”

Like Watson, sometimes we miss the obvious because it is right in front of us. Like

a tyrant, the toys we don’t have, the friends we want, the problems that lay claim on us, the

threat of terror, the un-answers of politicians, the bad news, and more, take it’s toll on us

and we live anxious, fearful lives. At the same time, our health, our home, friends, a church

that loves us and encourages us to be and do our best for Christ’s sake, our family, a Savior

who gave his life for us—the obvious—that which is right in front of us—we often take for

granted. Our blessings are too numerous to count. Each of these blessings is a gift from

God.

The rich young ruler could not see the obvious blessing of being free from things

and possessing only Jesus. The Pharisees could not see what was right in front of them—

the One who was greater than the temple. The innkeeper didn’t recognize the opportunity to

provide a room for the birth of Jesus in his inn. They missed what was right in front of

them.

Jesus characterized his generation, “Though seeing, they do not see; though hear-

ing, they do not hear or understand.”

Look around. See Jesus.

Know his love.

See him in the least of these …

Celebrate his extravagant grace.

Make his love obvious!
