Brothers Michel and Jean Lancon have one of the appellation’s oldest estates, and as indicated in the fabulous new book on Chateauneuf du Pape by Harry Karis, Domaine de la Solitude first estate bottled their wine in 1815! Quality was fabu-lous in the sixties and early seventies, then dropped off until about a decade ago. Over the last ten years, these wines have gone from strength to strength, and are now some of the finest of the appellation. They are made in distinctively different styles with the regular cuvee and the Cornelia Constanza very classic interpreta-tions of Chateauneuf du Pape, and the Cuvee Barberini and Reserve Secrete more modern-styled efforts. Essentially, there is something for everyone from Domaine de la Solitude. This large, 100-acre property is one of the few Chateauneuf du Pape estates whose vineyard is situated in one particular sector, the lieu-dit called La Solitude. This was my first look at the 2007s as the estate generally refuses to show unbottled barrel samples, which I totally respect. It has a light color and an extraordinary fragrant nose of exotic fruits and spring flowers followed by a zesty, light, but intense Muscat. The real challenge is what to compare this wine with. For my part, drinking it by itself as an aperitif, or at the end of a meal, seems the correct way to treat this complex, very intriguing and historic, slightly sweet wine. The candied fruit character and bright acidity balances out the wine’s sweetness. So there is nothing cloying or heavy about it.

In 2015 they also planted red Garnacha with the idea to include it in future vintages of this blend. There was more rain than average in 2016, and that allowed the ripening cycle to be longer, which is something really good in a region like this. It fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts followed by malolactic and eight months in new and sec-ond use 500-liter French oak barrels. It’s very floral and perfumed, with a capti-vating nose. It’s still a straightforward red but with more depth than in previous vintages and especially great freshness. 2016 seems like a very good vintage in the zone. The palate is approachable and soft, with very good acidity. And it’s a bargain!

Bright and golden yellow to the eye, it has an intense, complex nose, its aromas spicy, slightly smoky, with ripe fruit and a hint of wood. There are also notes of ex-otic fruits and minerals. In the mouth it is voluminous, unctuous and very elegant. Powerful, with a good acidity that ensures a long and lively passage. It presents a great balance between fruit and wood. Everything that is perceived in the nose appears again in the mouth.

The fermentation was in French oak barrels, both new and one year old, from various coopers. This was followed by some seven months of batonnage, with the wine in constant contact with its lees. It was then decanted into stainless steel tanks, where it remained for five months, before being bottled after clarification and stabilization.

It’s a north-facing, steep slope rich in limestone and was planted with well-adapted Portuguese grapes—Touriga Nacional and Trincadeira Preta—in 2003. Not as hot as 2014 but still a warm and dry vintage, 2015 saw an early harvest with very healthy grapes. The grapes fermented in concrete tanks with indigenous yeasts, followed by malolactic in barrique. The wine matured in well-seasoned small 500-liter French oak foudres for 12 months (they have shortened the oak aging of this wine). This is the finest vintage of this bottling I’ve tried so far; it has very good balance and a mixture of red and black berry fruit and floral undertones. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins. Amazing for the zone and for a vintage like 2015. I really believe in these grapes here.

96 Points — Wine Advocate Aug 2016The most classic cuvée was not produced in 2007 or 2008, so we jumped to the phenomenal 2009 Prado Enea. It was produced with grapes from cooler vineyards that enjoyed 20 extra days of slow ripening compared with warmer zones, which provided them with perfect ripeness and deep flavors. This blend of 70% Tempra-nillo, 20% Garnacha and the remaining 10% between Mazuelo and Graciano had an extended élevage, in this case no less than three years (alternating newer and old-er barrels). This is still a baby and I know Winemaker Jorge Muga would like to keep it in bottle for longer before selling it, but the commercial pressure is tremendous, as there has been no wine since 2006. The wine has 14.1% alcohol and a surpris-ing 3.34 pH, especially considering 2009 was generally a warm and ripe year. But somehow this cuvée seems to work very well in ripe vintages. The wine feels even younger on the palate, and it still needs to develop some further complexity and the silky texture for which this wine is famous. There is good balance here and all the elements are in place for a nice development in bottle. In fact, it feels like one of the great recent vintages of Prado Enea. There will be no Prado Enea in 2012 and 2013 either, but it’s produced in 2010, 2014 (small quantities) and 2015. At this quality level, the price seems like a real bargain.

97 Points — Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate“The NV 1905 Oloroso Solera Fundacional Lot B 2016 is a recent bottling(February 2016) that followed those 1,000 bottles originally filled in 2002.So the old average age of the wine is kept, because so little of it is bottled.We know how extremely old Oloroso can be almost painful, but this feelsquite balanced. Obviously old, the greenish border gives it away; it’sbelieved to be around 80 years of average age, and has an expressive noseof noble woods, roasted hazelnuts, incense and balsam, rusty nails, evensome savory notes (chicken broth?) and some Sherry brandy. Reading thetechnical data I found out this has 11.5 grams of residual sugar, I guessfrom pure concentration and evaporation because of its old age, as thereare no signs that it had ever been blended with some sweet wine. In anycase, the palate is balanced and you do not feel any sweetness at all, butmaybe that little sugar is the secret why it feels gentle rather than harsh.This Lot B is composed of 1,000 numbered bottles.”

97 Points — Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate“The new range of very old wines, between the Gran Barquero/La Cañada range (25/30 years) and the Soleras Fundacionales (80/90 years), is re-leased with the brand of the winery’s 50th birth year; as such, it is called NV 1955 Amontillado Solera Cincuentenario, but they are not wines from 1955 - which is rather confusing. It is a ‘solera’ of blended vintages and therefore a non-vintage wine averaging perhaps 40-50 years of age. In any case, this is an extraordinary old Amontillado, with great balance between old age and elegance, making it very feminine (yeah, you can kill me now!), perfumed and subtle. The palate is very intense, deeply saline and long, tasty and elegant, with superb balance. They have taken 200 bottles in November 2015 and plan to do a further four sacas of approximately the same volume, and the front labels have both the information about the saca and the bottle number.”

95 Points — Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate“I guess the market pressure (there’s even a documentary film called El Misterio del Palo Cortado) made them release the first Palo Cortado I’ve seen from Pérez-Barquero, the NV 1955 Palo Cortado Solera Cincuentenario. The back label explains that the wine started its life as a Fino with a biological phase under flor, so that might be the explanation for a saltier palate than the Oloroso from the same range. These wines are not from 1955 and in fact, they are not vintage wines, they are a multi-vintage blend aged in a solera that hypothetically would have been started around 50 years after the winery was created in 1905, hence the brand name 1955. This is quite similar to the Oloroso, in fact I would have had problemspronouncing it a Palo Cortado, and it would be difficult to say more than that it is a great old oxidative wine with great elegance, concentration and power. The initial bottling is 200 bottles and they plan to do more batches of the same size, always clearly identified on the front label.”

Black, opaque, dense and thick as (used) motor oil, it just tints the glass and sticks to its sides with brown chocolate-colored tears and a complex nose full of spices (clove, nutmeg), tobacco, balsamic aromas (old fur-niture, incense, wet ebony wood) and a core of bitter Belgian chocolate from the best chocolatiers you can think of (and I can think of Pierre Marcolini!). There is something reminiscent of the old traditional acetos from Módena, from that long aging in wood (it’s around 80/90 years of average age) with a dense palate that is not that sweet after all, and even has a savory (cracked peppercorns), tasty component that makes it very complete - a dessert on its own. It has balance within its powerful and concentrated style, which is the key to greatness here. This is 11.5% alcohol, which greatly contributes to its harmony and balance. You would never guess the 525 grams of sugar it has; the acidity is also concentrated, reaching the 6.13 grams (measured in tartaric acid). This will keep forever, even when you crack the bottle open.”

100 Points — Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate“In any case, this small refreshing of the wine ten years ago (the bottled wine had to be replaced with slightly younger wine from the older criaderas) seems to have done it good, and ironically though a little ‘younger’ than the previous bottling, it seems more balanced and elegant - especially as it has had plenty of time, some ten years, to blend in the newer wine. The result is astonish-ing. The nose combines the obvious very old wine characteristics of rusty iron, iodine, varnish, incense and oyster shells with fresher hazelnuts, noble varnished woods and a touch of white pepper. The palate is intense, terribly complex and persistent, but with gobsmacking balance and elegance, while being powerful and very concentrated. Here, time concentrates everything - alcohol, acidity and sugar, but the wine manages to keep good balance in a sort of ‘a lot of everything’. I cannot see how to improve this wine (other than perhaps the packaging). This should be virtually indestructible, as it has been slowly oxidized for close to a century, so nothing is going to harm it now.”

This is probably the densest of all the wines I tasted today, and there is a distinct, perfumed, almost floral note here (is it violet pastille?), which makes it extremely attractive. It’s also the most drinkable of all these old vintages, very balanced within its sweet profile, with marked flavors (also licorice and black olives) that stay in your mouth for one minute. Exotic and exuberant. This is incredibly young and lively, and very good value for the age and quality it delivers.”

I prefer these young wines in their initial, more exuberant phase but once they lose their youthful character they will keep in bottle forever given the high alcohol and sugar.

Giljagaur, or Gully Gawk, is named after one of the 13 Icelandic Yule Lads who bear little resemblance to Santa Claus. The Yule Lads are the sons of Grýla and Leppalúði, two of the most hideous ogres known to man, and their original role was to strike fear in the hearts of children.

Three types of yeast and a perfect blend of Slovenian and American hops give this Barley wine an especially festive character. Giljagaur is dry-hopped and has sweet but mild notes of hard candy and marmalade.

Those berries can only be picked in Iceland in the autumn and therefore we call it Autumn Sour Saison. The Icelander Leifur Eiríksson (which Leifur Nr.32 is named after) is believed to be the first european to discover America, about 500 years before Christofer Columbus came there. Leifur and his men landed where now is Newfoundland, where they found grapes and fruits and the grass was green all year around. Leifur named the place Vínland (Wineland).
