The Parade of Homes is always an exciting time for Tri-Cities builders, the real estate industry, homebuyers and home dreamers. The Parade inspires professional designers and decorators, as well as stay-at-home moms and “do-it-yourself-ers”. The wonderful thing about the Parade of Homes is that

it is for everybody, no matter your family size or price range. Now in its 51st year, there are some real treats in store for you in the Parade of

Homes this year! The homes are modern, spacious and energy efficient. As fantastic as they are to look at, these homes are designed for living with features such as an upstairs laundry room, a detached “casita”, spacious patios, and luxurious master suites.

Century 21 Tri-Cities is proud to be affiliated with three of the homebuilders with houses in the Parade, including Titan Homes, Viking Homes and Envision Homes. All three of these builder’s Parade houses are nothing short of spectacular, and I hope you have an opportunity to see them firsthand.

This year the Parade of Homes once again features “Chefs on Parade” which takes place September 12th and 13th. Some of the Tri-Cities best cuisine will be paired up with some of our areas most stylish new houses, including the Viking and Envision homes in Richland.

Dates and Times:

Now in its 51st year, the Tri-Cities Parade of Homes is proud to feature some of the most innovative new construction in the northwest!

This year you’ll find twenty-six homes in the Parade. While there is no theme, the Home Builders Association of Tri-Cities says the houses trend toward a modern style in the vein of re-nounced American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Many of the homes are energy efficient and are in a variety of sizes and price ranges. The HBA’s Sarah Britain Szatkowski says, “You’ll find starter homes

to dream homes on the parade. People can get a glimpse of their future dream home, but also find a home within their budget today.

The twenty-six homes are located in Kennewick, Pasco, Richland and West Richland. Visitors to the Parade will have an opportunity to vote in the People’s choice awards; the results will be released in early October.

Century 21 Tri-Cities is proud to list three of these spectacular homes, and we hope you will have a chance to view them firsthand.

Imagine having detached living quarters for your visiting in-laws, an aging parent or your college student home for summer break.

Welcome to the “Rylee Ann with Casita” built by Titan Homes. This is Titan’s second year in the Parade of Homes, and builder

Aaron Sullivan’s goal was to create “an affordable Parade home”. The Rylee Ann with Casita may be affordable, but it is far from

being an average house. Located at 6634 Opal Street in West Richland’s Sunset Ridge Estates, this home stands out from the others. The main house is 2124 square feet, with three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms, but, that is just the beginning.

In addition to the main house, there is 280 square foot detached “casita”. This small living quarters has a bedroom and bathroom and sits about eight feet in front of the home. Sullivan says he found the concept in Arizona and has built the house once previously in Kennewick’s Fountain Hills development to rave reviews. “The casita house was one of my favorite houses we finished. We had excellent feedback from everyone who went through the home. The Parade house is a very similar house with different finishes.” Sullivan envisions the casita could also serve as a home office, workout room or any space you want separate from your home, but still at home.

This home greets you with a majestic courtyard complete with a wrought iron gate, and a huge entry with a 14 foot ceiling. Throughout the living room and kitchen you’ll find sophisticated plank tile flooring, and the spacious kitchen features an oversized island and quartz countertops.

There is another surprise out the back door, where you’ll find a 624 square foot covered patio, extending your living space for many months of the year. Realtor/Broker Michelle Bouchey says don’t worry about those one hundred degree days when you may not want to be outside—the perimeter of the patio has an outdoor misting system which can lower the temperature by as much as thirty degrees!

The Rylee Ann with Casita is a true original. If you are looking for a spectacular home that is unlike any other on the block and still at a reasonable price, take a walk through this house. You won’t be disappointed!

This is a house any mother would love. It features a huge master suite, loads of room for the kids to sprawl, and a spacious laundry room that’s upstairs! That means no more hauling laundry baskets up and down the stairs. This is a “wow!” home,

and the wow starts at the entry. When you walk into this Viking home called the “Sydney”, you step

into an entryway with an 18 foot ceiling. It is dramatic, even grandiose, yet warm and welcoming. To the right is a spacious office with floor to ceiling bookshelves. Walk further into the house and you’ll find the gorgeous kitchen with an island eating bar, double ovens, a pantry, quartz countertops and staggered maple cabinets. In the living area there are nine foot ceilings and a fire place with tile surround. The house is listed at $357,624, and, at that price Century 21 Realtor / Broker Matt Cronrath describes the “Sydney” as “great value and space for your family.”

Hayden, Idaho based Viking built its first home in the Tri-Cities in 2008 and since then has constructed nearly 200 homes in the area. This is Viking’s second year on the Parade. The company describes itself as a semi-custom homebuilder; as a buyer you can come in, look at plans and alter them to fit their needs.

The 3212 square foot “Sydney” is a very family friendly design. It has three bedrooms upstairs with a large open loft area in the middle. The master suite is nothing short of spectacular! It has a large bedroom, which leads into a separate sitting room. The master bathroom has a corner soaking tub, a tiled shower, granite counter tops and ceramic tile floors. A large walk-in closet finishes off the suite.

The house is equipped with a dual heating system, which heats the downstairs separately from upstairs. Viking’s KariAnn Clark says this is a house that Viking is proud of. “What we’ve actually done is taken one of our best selling homes and upgraded it as well as added additional features, but still keeping it family friendly. We want to offer our buyers an upgraded version of a home that sells very well.”

Traditional living meets modern style in this gorgeous house by Envision Homes. Located in the South Richland neighborhood of Silver Meadows, this home truly has it all. “People are go-ing to fall in love with all the amenities we are putting into this

home,” says Century 21 Realtor/Broker Michael Mackay. He’s referring to features such as the home’s ten foot ceiling and glass

backsplash in the kitchen. The home has a cozy but open feel to it, with a fireplace in the family room framed floor to ceiling with stone.

Envision takes housing to the next level in this home at 262 Silver Meadows Drive. The four bedroom two and a half bathroom house may lean traditional, but there is nothing ordinary about it. It has rich hard-wood floors in the main living area, and in the kitchen you’ll find dark cabinets, countered with pale gray walls and light corian countertops. Whirlpool appliances and a sleek glass range hood add the finishing touches. Peek out the back door and you’ll find a large covered patio for entertaining.

As for location, you can’t beat the Silver Meadows neighborhood. Just off of Keene Road, it’s near parks, schools and the home of a brand new Yokes Fresh Market, set to open in the fall. Envision Sales Director Rachel Roupe says, “This is a really great location, across from new retail and grocery stores. It’s in a small community of upscale homes.”

Envision Homes says it takes pride in building its houses one family at a time, giving homebuyers more space, choice and value for their money. The Seattle based company spends countless hours trying to anticipate homebuyer’s needs and adapting to changing trends.

This top-of-the-line home feels larger that its 1992 square feet. With a price tag of $324,500 it is affordable luxury for a modern, yet traditional family.

The “L” house was the only model with four bedrooms. There were 44 built.

Richard Nordgren loves his Richland home. He loves the architecture, the neighborhood and the history. At time when there is so much affordable and beautiful new construction

around the Tri-Cities, Nordgren is hanging on to the past. “It’s a well built house, the lumber is old growth Douglas fir and you don’t find materials like that anymore,” he says.

Richard Nordgren is the proud owner of an “L” house on Putnam Street in Richland. It was built in 1944, one of more than 4000 homes built in the span of a few years to house the thousands of people hastily relocated to Richland to work on the Manhattan Project at Hanford. The top secret project developed the atomic bombs that would eventually be dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima Japan, effectively ending the Second World War.

Construction of “Richland Village”, which would be home to the Hanford workers, started in March of 1943 and from the outset the homes were called the Alphabet Houses. A grand total of 4507 houses were built between 1943 and 1949, all designed by Spokane architect Gustav Albin Pehrson. Pehrson initially designed nine different house types of various sizes and configurations to which he assigned letters of the alphabet. He was given less than 90 days to completely design the entire new Richland community including streets, utilities and commercial and residential building plans. Over the next several years he would design many more houses lettering up to Z.

The population of Richland in July of 1943 was 300. By the end of World War II, just two years later, it was 25,000.

The U.S. government chose DuPont to construct the industrial facilities at Hanford and the housing village in Richland. The army wanted the most basic accommodations for the Hanford workers, but DuPont expected higher quality housing for its employees. One of those employees was DuPont chemist Ben Graham. He was working for DuPont in Illinois in 1944 when he was put on a train and sent to Richland on a secret assignment. His young family followed a few months later including his 4 year old son Larry. “DuPont sent us to

the rail station and shipped us out. I don’t even think we knew where we were going,” says Larry Graham, now in his mid-70’s.

Graham remembers asparagus growing through the blacktop sidewalks of Richland, and the flat roofs of hundreds of pre-fab houses that preceded the Alphabet Houses. Moving west to Richland for his dad to work on the Manhattan Project is a huge part of the Graham family

mythology. “It was a significant part of our lives. The second world war was something we were involved with … and it moved us from Illinois to Washington.”

Architect Pehrson bowed to the simpler housing demands of the army by eliminating fireplaces, garages and most porches from the houses plans. However, throughout the ABC houses he used quality construction materials and provided spacious yards.

The letter-houses were built with lumber from the old 1929 Tillamook burn about 50 miles west of Portland. Architecturally, many of the houses were based on the Ranch form that was pioneered by the great American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright.

“DuPont sent us to the rail station and shipped us out. I don’t even think we knew where we were going."- Larry Graham

Page 9: The Perfect Move

All of the alphabet houses originally came with double-hung windows. And, while it is common to see a chimney on the roof of an ABC house, none of the letter houses actually came with a fireplace. The sole purpose of the chimney was to vent combustion gasses from oil or coal heat.

The alphabet house interiors used sheetrock instead of the older lath and plaster method that was common until the late 1930’s. They had hard or soft wood floors; in Nordgren’s home the Hemlock floors are still in beautiful condition. The kitchens and bathrooms had real linoleum flooring (pressed cork processed with linseed oil). Doorknobs were fairly close to today’s

standard but were slightly smaller. Brass was a common finish with plated chrome used inside of bathrooms.

Many modifications to the letter houses have taken place in the past fifty years. The most common is the installation of metal or vinyl siding over the original shingles (asbestos shingles were usually removed before applying the new siding). Carpeting was often installed over the wood floors. Other modifications include the installation of “picture windows”, heating updates, and the expected kitchen and bath remodels.

Nearly 70 years ago, Pehrson planned the neighborhoods along egalitarian principles, with a mixture of large houses alongside the smaller ones to “…avoid the appearance of ‘better’ or ‘poorer’ districts.” The A and B houses, which were the blue collar houses, were built side by side with F and H houses which were intended for managers, engineers and professionals. Connie Estep, the curator of the CREHST Museum in Richland says Perhson’s concept basically worked. “The neat thing is even though they were clearly designed for different classes of people they were basically built with the same quality.”

Despite the attempt to integrate all levels of employees, many executive level houses were clustered closer to the Columbia River, particularly in what is now designated the “Gold Coast Historic District”. The neighborhood, located between Van Geisen and McMurray on the river side of George Washington Way, was named to the National Register of Historic Places in April 2005.

The typical monthly rent for the Alphabet homes ranged from $25 to $65 per month. Today the Alphabet houses range from about $80,000 for the small two-bedroom “U” houses, to the mid $150,000 range for the two story “F” houses. The larger ABC homes, close to river can sell in the low to mid-$200,000 range.

As for Richard Nordgren, after more than 30 years in his “L” house, he says he will never part with it. He and his wife have never tempted by new construction or something smaller now that their daughter is grown. He says there is probably not a square inch of the house that doesn’t have a good memory attached to it. “The coroner is going to have to take me out of this place.” — Kristi Paulus

CRAVINGS

There is no shortage of places in town to get a coffee fix. But if you’re frothing at the mouth for a cup crafted from organic beans made in a shop that prides itself on using locally-sustainable products, aptly named The Local is

for you. One of the owners of The Local, Michael Tormanen, says

the business philosophy is threefold: make outstanding coffee drinks like one would find in Portland or Seattle, support othercommunity businesses, and foster relationships among their customers. “We are trying to create a community within a community,” Tormanen says. “I’ve seen some awesome connections made that affect people’s lives.”

The Local has set itself apart by using fair-trade beans from a small, organic roaster based in Cannon Beach, Oregon. Tormanen and his wife spent their honeymoon last summer in the coastal town and admired the vibe at Sleepy Monk Coffee. Tormanen commented that if they ever opened their own shop, Sleepy Monk would be at the top of their wish list of what to serve. “I’m a nerd when it comes to outstanding coffee,” he says.

Tormanen describes the atmosphere at The Local as cozy with several sofas on which to lounge, a big wooden bar, and even an old church pew.

It’s the kind of place that lends itself to an autumn day in the Mid-Columbia; gorgeously-crafted drinks, grilled paninis, pastries fresh each morning from Ethos Bakery, and an ever-changing variety of soups beginning in the fall.

Whether you’re driving through or plan to relax inside, The Local promises to give your standard cup of joe a run for its money. n — Shannon Cartier

What The Local is for coffee, Fresh Picks WA is for all things fruit. Basin City-based farming company Rowley and Hawkins opened a storefront in late June from which to feature a smoothie bar and

to showcase their locally-grown and handmade fruit products. Manager Whitney Rowley says after having a presence at farmers’ markets for so long, the family wanted a more permanent presence in town.

Upon entering the store, you’ll find smoothies that don’t contain added sugars or artificial syrups and purees. Rowley says she can customize drinks for those who may be diabetic or lactose- or gluten-intolerant.

Rowley says kids sometimes choose to add yogurt or sherbet to their smoothies. The store also caters to those who want green smoothies, which can pack a wallop in the vitamin department. The fruit in the drink masks the flavor of items like spinach so you get delicious flavor with the benefit of additional nutrients.

Besides all the blended drink choices, Fresh Picks stocks a variety of local fruits, pitted pie cherries, jams and jellies, and apple and cherry-apple ciders. You’ll also find fruit platters and edible bouquets and kitchen gadgets to help with fruit preparation and canning.

“Magic, magic, magic,” that’s how Eric Van Winkle, the chairman, describes the Gesa Carousel of Dreams being built at the

Southridge Sports Complex in Kennewick. The multi-million dollar project has been in

the works for 12 years. For a long time it was an on-again, off-again merry-go-round that seemed in danger of never getting out of the gate.

But, that changed this year. The Three Rivers Carousel Foundation secured the funding needed to finally break ground and the carousel construction is well underway. It’s expected to welcome children for rides before the end of the year.

The Carousel horses themselves are over 100 years old. They were hand-carved in New York City in 1910 by artist Charles Carmel. For 70 years they enchanted children in St. Joseph, Michigan, but when the area fell into disrepair they ended up in a warehouse in Roswell, New Mexico where they sat for 30 years. A small Kennewick group found the carousel horses in 2001 and paid a million dollars for them. And, the carousel will offer much more than a three dollar ride. It has a banquet room that holds 150 people for weddings, business functions and birthday parties.

Van Winkle believes the Gesa Carousel of Dreams is just what the Tri-Cities needs. He says the horses and chariots bring art, history and culture the Tri-Cities, and he thinks the carousel will be a multi-generational destination. “I can see mom bringing the children, and teenagers riding the carousel on their first date, then, bringing their kids back years later. It’s one of those things that crosses all age groups.” n — Kristi Paulus

Inspiration behind the Carousel of Dreams.

Carousel horses have show sides. Their show sides are richly carved, have more details, jewels, and elab-orate saddles.

Charles Carmel is known for his use of buckles, feathers, flowers, jewels, straps and lavish colors. His horses are not only noted for their powerful appearance but also for the gentle gleam found in their eyes.

In 1910 Charles Carmel charged $35 to carve a large jumper or standing horse.

Yakima Valley native and filmmaker Rick Castañeda is in the middle of a banner year. His full-length feature, “Cement Suitcase”, shot around

the Lower Valley, recently won the audience choice award at an L.A. film festival. The film centers around a wine salesman at his breaking point, a love triangle, and the art of letting go. The Perfect Move got the skinny on what’s next for Castañeda:

You're proof that a guy from our neck of the woods can go on to accomplish great things. Any words of wisdom?

Are you an oenophile* or did you choose a wine-based premise for another reason?

I wanted to focus on something great about the area and passionate to the character, and wine seemed like the answer to both questions. I did really want to learn

more about wine, and making a film about it seemed like a great way to start. It’s also added a lot to the appeal of the film.

Out of all the area wineries, how did you choose Airfield Estates in Prosser as a location?

I had a class with one of the owners of Airfield in high school. It doesn’t hurt that Airfield has one of the nicest tasting rooms I’ve ever been to.

How important was the Kickstarter campaign, which relies on contributions from the public, to the finished project?

Incredibly important. Because of our contributors’ fantastic support, we still have a film festival budget, a small marketing budget, and were able to get award-winning musicians and sound designers to complete our soundtrack.

Any plans to show the movie in the Tri-Cities?

We’re planning to do a theatrical run in early November. We’ve gotten a lot of

local interest in the film. After that, we’re approaching a few wineries in the hopes of doing a wine tour, where we’ll screen the film in tasting rooms.

We’ll be distributing through Video On Demand with Amazon, Hulu, and Netflix. We want to put the Tri-Cities on the map.

What's next on your to-do list?I just finished writing another feature

about a group of families that live together in a furniture store. I’m mostly focused on making sure that Cement Suitcase gets a good release. After that I’ll be focusing on trying to find funding for the next one.

How often do you return to the Yakima Valley?

My parents still live in the house I grew up in, and whenever I go there I find that all my stress just disappears. So I try to go as often as I can, which is generally about four or five times a year. n — Shannon Cartier

Greg Senger comes from a long line of builders. He learned all aspects of building from a “hands on” experience on his father’s job sites. In 1986, he started Greg Senger Construction, and for the last two

decades he has gone on to build custom homes, home renovations, add-ons, patios and sun decks throughout the Tri-Cities.

Greg Senger has a solid reputation as an experienced builder with a keen understanding of design and an eye for detail. He remains a “hands on” builder, involved in the day-to-day construction of all his projects, along with his team of top rate subcontractors, many whom

have been with him throughout the years.

For almost 30 years the Job family has grown and sold pumpkins on their 36 acre nursery

and tree farm just north of Pasco in October. We as a family enjoy the magic of the

pumpkin patch, where we get to see so much creativity and family

entertainment. We also have a great deal of fun with pumpkins, here how

the Job family plays with pumpkins...

Arthur Job enjoys taking different types of pie pumpkins or winter squashes to try different recipes to make excellent pumpkin pies, cheesecakes, and breads. He will harvest pumpkins from the patch make a pumpkin puree as his base and then he plays. He will treat the family to his experiments all winter long. On a side note he freezes the puree to have a good supply of it all year long to allow him to play his recipes when he has the time or the occasion to do it.

Brothers, Duane and Richard Job enjoy oven roasted Hubbard squash with a little brown sugar and honey. They cut it into slices and roast it to how their grandmother would do it for an autumn treat. They also pick and deliver pumpkins to their favorite restaurants to help decorate them for the fall.

Alex Job and his wife Heather love creating a cool thrill for tricker treaters by lining the sidewalk and driveway of their house with carved, lit pumpkins on Halloween (last year Alex and Heather used about 30 pumpkins). Alex takes a basic approach to his pumpkin carving, where he carves simple faces into them. Heather prefers to carve elegant scenes into her pumpkins. Either way the house of carved pumpkins is a hit for both kids and adults as they wander the neighborhood seeking treats.

Kathy Job loves doing things with the mini pumpkins by painting faces on them and decorating her home with pumpkin or gourd arrangements. They were really neat growing up as a child with those arrangements for Thanksgiving.

This years experiment will be to make pumpkin planters by hollowing out the pumpkin gook and replacing it with potting soil. Then plant fall plants in them like coral bells, kale, pansies, ajuga, mums, and ornamental grasses. Then water your new fall scene occasionally to keep things moist. Also remember to set your planter in the flower bed to keep the potential mess of the concrete.

We are looking forward to the coming fall to see all the pumpkin pickers descend upon the patch Job’s Nursery again! So see you out there for some good old fashioned fall family fun. As the Tri-Cities continues to grow, our health care options are expanding as well. There are several large facilities that have recently opened or are scheduled to open to provide health care services needed now and into the

future.

KADLEC’S FREE-STANDING EMERGENCY ROOM

A good example is Kadlec Regional Medical Center’s new freestanding emergency room on Highway 395 at 19th Avenue in Kennewick. Located across the Tri-Cities from the hospital’s original emergency room in Richland, this new emergency room was designed with the patient in mind.

From the moment you walk in the door you will find personal-ized service and fast care, according to Kadlec spokesperson Jim Hall. The ER team is specially cross-trained in several areas so the patient does not have to wait for additional medical staff to get the care they need. The team is focused on providing responsive treatment and getting patients healthy and back home within 90 minutes.

Kadlec chose the Kennewick location after discovering that 15 to 20% of its ER patients in Richland actually come from Kenne-wick and beyond!

KENNEWICK GENERAL HOSPITAL SOUTH RIDGE CAMPUS

Just up Highway 395 the new Southridge campus of Kennewick General Hospital is under construction. The 171,000 square foot, 112 million dollar facility will provide critical care, medical and surgical beds and short stay beds. There will also be an emer-gency department, operating rooms and much more. The current hospital in downtown Kennewick, which was built more than 60 years ago, will be repurposed into a Women and Children’s Hos-pital. The new Southridge hospital is scheduled to open in April of 2014.

PACIFIC CATARACT AND LASER INSTITUTE

Finally, if you are in need of laser eye surgery, the Pacific Cata-ract and Laser Institute (PCLI) cut the ribbon on a brand new facil-ity in Kennewick in April. Visitors to the Institute on Rio Grande Avenue are treated as special guests and the comfortable, home-like atmosphere reassures patients and minimizes fear of surgery.

“People are scared of eye surgery,” says Marlin Gimbel, the Director of Professional Relations. “If surroundings are warm and not so clinical it reduces fear and raises confidence. It’s actually part of our anesthesia process.” n — Kristi Paulus

At 64 years old, Kathye Kilgore is far from slow-ing down. For much of her life Kathye has been on the front lines helping people in our community in some of their toughest mo-

ments. “That’s why I’m alive,” says Kilgore. “I grew up learning from my dad that you are either part of the solution or part of the problem.”

For the past year Kilgore has worked as the Fund Development Specialist for the Benton-Franklin chapter of the American Red Cross, meaning she helps people understand why donating to the Red Cross is so important, and how the Red Cross is vital in the Tri-Cities, the United States and around the world.

Previous to that position, Kathye Kilgore was the Executive Director of Second Harvest. She was the driving force behind bringing the issue of hunger in our neighborhoods out into the open, and set about feeding the people who couldn’t feed themselves and their families. ”My reason for working in non-profit is I bring something to the table whether it’s empathy, understanding or compassion and the ability to lead people to resources. That’s the gratifying part.”

Kilgore wants people to know it’s not always the money you donate that is the most important aspect of giving, sometimes it’s an open, caring heart.

A self-described super-charged type A personality, Kathye Kilgore is nowhere near retirement, especially while there is so much need in our cities. “If I feel that I have something to give that someone else can benefit from I’m going to be there to do that.”

Currently, the Red Cross is the right fit for Kilgore to do that. Not only does the non-profit organization provide disaster relief services, it also helps our armed forces (both in and out of war zones), maintains the blood supply, and is a safety net for our community. “If your house burns down, I’m not going to ask you what your annual income is… we’re going to provide for your immediate needs. We’re going to provide housing for you, there’ll be a motel room, we’re going to make sure you have food to eat, and there’s a teddy bear for your child. We’re not there to judge, we’re there to help.”

And that pretty much sums up Kathye Kilgore’s mission in life. n — Kristi Paulus

It all starts with a good quality grape.

In 2007 the Fries family out of Sunriver, Oregon broke

ground on Desert Wind Winery in Prosser. Doug and Joann Fries were lifelong farmers from Cali-fornia’s Central Valley before they moved north and began planting grapes.

It’s hard to miss Desert Wind. The southwest style building sits above I-82 and features a tasting room, restaurant and four luxury rooms for overnight accommoda-tion.

But the winery is just a portion of this large family operation. The site also has its own production facility where last year the staff bottled 25,000 cases of wine. The facility can actually handle up to 200,000!

In addition, Desert Wind grows all of its own grapes. The Fries own 800 acres of wine grapes in

Mattawa, in Grant County, and this, says Erin Fries, is what makes their wines so special. “The fact that we grow all of our fruit, we have all of the quality control and expertise in producing a good grape. It all starts there,” says Fries.

The winery’s flagship wine is its Ruah, which is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot grapes. Fries says the wine is easy drinking with rich aromas of smoked cedar, ripe blackberries and currants. The wine is a perfect partner for roasted meats, hearty pastas, or a prime cut of steak. Desert Wind wines will typically run you about $15 to $25 per bottle.

A visit to Desert Wind can feature wine tasting, dinner in its full service restaurant and an overnight stay. Not many winer-ies offer that kind of quality and service! n — Kristi Paulus

Jerod Shelby’s love for cars started when he was 7-years old, when his dad came home with a go-kart. The West Richland man has come a long way since his go-karting days 30-some-thing years ago!

Now, as the builder of the world’s fastest car, Jerod Shelby is expanding his Tri-Cities based company, Shelby SuperCars. Shelby is building a new manufacturing facility and showroom in West Richland on Keene Road at Belmont Boulevard. The project broke ground in late May and is expected to create 30 to 40 new jobs.

Employees at the new plant will build elite cars with a price tag of 1.3 million dollars, for high rolling clients such as Jay Leno. But, Shelby’s most significant claim to fame is building the fastest car on record; in 2007 the Ultimate Aero captured the Guinness World

Record with an average speed of 256 miles per hour. Shelby’s lat-est vehicle, the Tuatara, was unveiled in 2011. His team will build about 26 Tuataras per year at the new West Richland plant. Shelby hopes to help his hometown of West Richland financially by bringing his high-profile clientele out for big purchases. The company’s Chief Administrative Officer Alan Leverett says Shelby wants to give back to the community that has supported him. “Jerrod has strong ties to the city of West Richland. He could have put this facility anywhere in the world,” says Leverett. The new world headquarters for Shelby Supercars will include a production and manufacturing plant, showroom, conference cen-ter and museum and will be open to the public. Leverett expects the facility to open in the spring of 2014. n — Kristi Paulus

Our brokers and staff at Century 21 Tri-Cities have had a busy sum-mer! In addition to helping clients buy and sell homes we have been

involved in many community events rang-ing from walking for charity to cheering on classic cars at Cool Desert Nights.

The summer months truly bring out the best in the Tri-Cities; great weather and amazing local events. We were thrilled to have a booth at Hogs ‘n Dogs in West Richland. After all, you have to park it somewhere! It was great to meet motorcy-cle enthusiasts from every corner of the Tri-Cities and beyond. We also entered three vehicles in Cool Desert Nights in Richland. They were “Smarter, Bolder and Faster”, just like our crew at Century 21 Tri-Cities.

In early June we walked and camped out in the Relay for Life. C21 is proud to have raised money for cancer victims and hopes to take part in this amazing event next year! Fast forward a month to mid-July, when about a dozen staff and agents donned white tee-shirts and braved “Run or Dye” which benefits local charities.

And, if you attended the Benton-Franklin Fair and Rodeo parade, you couldn’t miss our bright yellow C21 house “Roofus” in the parade lineup! Don’t forget to look for Roofus around town. If you spot him, take a photo with him, put it on Facebook and you might win a prize.

The activities are safe, family friendly, well organized, well attended and just a good time all around. Century 21 Tri-Cities is honored to be a part of this community, whether it is selling your house, helping you buy your next home, or shaking your hand at a community event. Whichever it is, make sure you come say “Hello” to us! n — Kristi Paulus

Events like these are clear examples of why the Tri-Cities is such a great place to live.
