“If you are the Son of God…”

The traditional understanding of the Church is that the triple temptations of Jesus in the wilderness offered Him competing visions of how He might express His identity as “the Son of God” - visions that conflicted with His awareness of His Father’s expectations. St. Matthew depicts Jesus, after His baptism by John, being “led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil”, challenged to consider an alternate narrative for the Mission of the Messiah, one without the risk of rejection, suffering and death. We know the potential of hunger and thirst in desert conditions to force questions about one’s essential vulnerability and suggest tempting shortcuts to relief. Solitude itself can underscore seen and unseen threats, forcing one to consider whether the sights and sounds are real or imagined. In such an environment, one might easily lose one’s bearings and place a premium on mere survival, a willingness to accept any suggestion of escape, at whatever price might be demanded. The Book of Genesis reminds us that the original Tempter was disguised as “most cunning of all the animals”, knowing well how to present himself as an earnest friend - indeed, a savior - speaking with perception to one’s fears and vanity, promising “all the kingdoms of the world in their magnificence” to distract one from recognizing his real security. Jesus combats the Evil One, in the strength of the Spirit’s assurance of the Father’s will, and commits Himself to embrace that will to the very end.

As we begin our Lenten journey, we are encouraged to use the disciplines of the Season - prayer, fasting and almsgiving - to create a spiritual environment like the desert, where we are vulnerable to considerations of stark truths about the meaning and direction of our life. We are not alone, however: we too are led by the Spirit into this time of honest, undistracted reflection on fundamental realities like God’s all-embracing love for all His creatures and His universal saving will, which gives us hope of enduring life through the Sacrifice of His Son. As we progress through the Season, seeking to have it be ‘the Best Lent Ever’, it is with a conviction about the Eternal Love that is at the heart of all that is. In the light of that Love, revealed in the pattern of Self-surrender embodied by Jesus, we are moved to repentance for our attempts to ‘do it our way’ (as our first parents responded to the Tempter’s lies about their true relation to the God Who made them) and we discover new sources of hope as we look to our future.

They are hardly original images, but I think of the Season’s tasks as forms of ‘Spring cleaning’ (eliminating whatever has accumulated to clutter our life with non-essentials) and of ‘Spring training’ (flexing the muscles of our identity as disciples of Jesus, and re-connecting with our ‘team’ of fellow-believers, contributing to its overall vitality and impact in our world). May this indeed be our ‘Best Lent Ever’! God love you!

- Msgr. Tim Shugrue

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK “It is written: The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve.” (Mt 4:10) Tempted between the riches and power of this world and service to God, Jesus chose service to His father. If we wish to truly follow Jesus, we, too, must decide to turn away from power and riches and put

God at the center of our lives. How is God calling you to serve?

MEMORIAL DONATIONS - We are accepting Memorial Donations for flowers for the Altar area, the Candles, Bread & Wine used for the Liturgies, and the weekly Sanctuary Candle. These items may be donated in memory of someone or to mark a special occasion.

A donation of $10 is suggested for the candles, bread & wine and sanctuary candle, and a donation of $40 is suggested for the weekly flowers. (MEMORIAL CARDS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THESE DONATIONS.) ALSO, as we face the need to replace various items for liturgical use, we are happy to arrange for memorials of deceased loved ones. Contact the Parish Office.

Lenten Booklets: Adult Lenten Booklets (black) for your personal growth through the Lenten Season are available at the doors of the Church. Please take one per family. It is our hope and prayer that these Lenten Booklets are of spiritual benefit to you and your family.

Sign up for “Best Lent Ever”: www.dynamiccatholic.com

An extra weekday Mass will be celebrated during this Holy Season at 7:00 p.m. We will need Eucharistic Ministers to serve at these Masses. Also, the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered on Mondays after 7:00 p.m. Mass.

Stations of the Cross will be prayed on the Fridays of Lent at 12:30 p.m. following Noon Mass and at 7:30 p.m. following 7:00 p.m. Mass. SUBSTITUTING THE APOSTLES’ CREED FOR LENT Liturgical guidelines permit the use of either the Nicene Creed or the Apostles’ Creed on Sundays: the latter is especially appropriate during the Lenten and Easter Seasons, since it is the basis for the formula used in the Renewal of Baptismal Promises of Easter. Beginning next Sunday, therefore, we will be professing our faith in the words of the Apostles’ Creed which is printed on the pew cards for the new translations of the texts and responses for Mass.

ROSARY SOCIETY - Our meeting is on Monday, March 6, 2017, at 7:30 p.m. in the Sarah Black Room. We will celebrate the feast days of Sts. Patrick and Joseph. Gift cards from supermarkets are always wel-come for Cranford Family Care. Remember to mark your calendars for the Annual Babka Sale the weekend of April 8-9, as well as the Retreat Day at San Alfonso on May 15.

LENTEN “PRAYER - BREAKFAST - REFLECTION” FOR WOMEN - We would like to invite you to Wednesday mornings of Lenten “Prayer-Breakfast-Reflection” for Women during this 2017 Lenten Season, from 6:00 to 6:50 a.m. in the School auditorium (directly across from the Sarah Black Room, Parish Center (use side door of school). On Wednesday, March 8, we will reflect on the readings for Sunday, March 12:

Genesis 12:1-4a; 2 Timothy 1: 8b-10; Matthew 17: 1-9 Perhaps you are unable to attend all weeks - that’s okay! It would be helpful, however, if we could have some idea of your interest since there is some preparation ahead of time: Let us hear from you, please: Religious Ed Office 908-276-2050.

PETER’S PENCE Collection (next weekend March 11-12) is a tangible reflection of our communion with the universal church. Through this collection, our Holy Father is provided with resources to assist those in most need of help around the world. Your generosity is appreciated and gratefully accepted.

INCLUSIVE FAMILY MASS, accommodating all members of God’s family and especially seeking to include individuals and fami-lies living with developmental, intellectual and/or other disabilities, will take place at Cathedral Basilica, Lower Level Chapel (entrance on Clifton Ave.) on Saturday, March 18 (10:30 a.m.) Presider will be Bishop Manuel Cruz, D.D. Refreshments. Info: 973-639-6536.

REGISTRATION for Religious Education is underway, and fees have been raised slightly for 2017-2018. Please note that in FY 2016, revenue (tuition, book and other fees) totaled $108,106.00 against expenses (staff salaries and benefits, operating and overhead costs) of $283,983.00, resulting in a subsidy from general parish funds of $175,877.00. Even with increased fees for 2017-2018, projected cost increases in all categories will result in a parish subsidy of the Religious Education Program of at least $165,000. We recognize that our parish community has a responsibility, shared with their families, for the proper religious formation of our young parishioners. No child will be turned away due to financial difficulties: please direct concerns about fees to the Religious Education Office.

EXPLORATIONS IN FAITH & SPIRITUALITY Tuesday, March 14 - 12:45-2:15 and 7:30-9:00 p.m. Parish Ctr. - Pat O’Keefe Rm. (Choose the session that works for you.) Topic: View and discussion of the Cen-ter for Contemplation’s 2016 Divine Dance webcast where Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM, and William Paul Young, author of The Shack, discuss the meaning of the novel The Shack and our concepts of God and Trinity.

2017 LENTEN REGULATIONS

1. The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.

On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted, and two (2) smaller meals which, if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity.

Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast.

On day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. 2. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence, “substantially”, or as a whole, is a serious obligation. 3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self- denial as penance. 4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, March 5, 2017 to The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, June 11, 2017. *Canon 920, §1. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year.
