Being the Best to our ParentsBy Obaid Hashmi

decreed that you
should worship none
but Him and that you
be dutiful to your
parents. If one of
them or both attainold age in your life,
then do not say to
them uff , nor shout

terms of honour. And
lower for them the
wing of submission
and humility through mercy. And say, My Lord!
Grant them Your mercy as they brought me up
when I was small. (Quran, 17:23-24)
Being the best to our parents is of huge importance in
Islam and I can only touch on a topic of such
significance.
We have all had those moments where we may have got
a little frustrated or angry at our parents. They may have
told us to study harder, clean our rooms or got into
arguments because they didnt let us do what we want.
Yet Allah (swt) has told us that then do not say to them
uff" which means that even if we feel that they are
being fair or unfair or we feel that we are right we should
not even show them our frustration. We should show
them respect because Allah (swt) has commanded us to
do so and because during our lives, the good our
parents have done for us is always going to outweigh the
hurt we may perceive they have done to us.
As we get older we may feel like we are independent,
understand the world around us and when our parents
say something to us we may often respond in anger and
frustration. We feel they dont understand us or cannot
relate to us, and in anger storm off to our rooms.
Nevertheless our parents put up with us endlessly with
nothing but love.
Most of us have had moments where we felt our parents
were lecturing us and may have felt some irritation,
however if you or I look back at those moments, in most
cases what was being said was because our parents
want the best for us. They are often trying to teach us
invaluable lessons and the lessons they have taught us
and care they gave is something we may often take forgranted. My dad often says to me that he really
remembers and understands the all the things his father
used to say to him when his father had passed away.
Unfortunately we often undervalue the blessings in our
lives until we lose them or are about to lose them.
Our mothers are specifically mentioned as we may
forget what theyve done for us during times we cannot
remember. When we were foetuses our mothers went
through much pain and suffering and when we were
newborns and toddlers our mothers did everything for us
such as feeding us, changing us, comforting us, taking
care of us when we were ill and so on.
We also often forget all the things our parents do for us
from driving us around or picking us up late from our
friends house to making dua for us to pass our exams
and so much more. Our parents will have likely been
there in the best of times but almost more importantly
they were there supporting us and helping us through
the worst of times.
In summary we should remember how much our parents
do for us and by the command of Allah should alwaysaddress them with respect. We should also aim do
things for our parents that will make them happy whether
that is cleaning the house, doing the shopping or buying
a gift for our mothers. We should always keep our
parents in our du'as as the amount our parents did for us
is so much that we as humans can never give back that
much and only Allah (swt) can. I myself need to take
heed of this advice and we should all try to be the best to
our parents InshAllah.
