I would first like to start off by saying

a big “Thank you” to Dr. Anthony Stanganelli for his past

service and leadership to our society and profession.

The PCCS is only as successful, as YOU are active. I want to

start off with a challenge to each member, to find time to

share your knowledge of Chiropractic with others. Take time

and invest in your community. I have always believed that

patients make better decisions when we are better educat-

ed. If we all strive to educate and inform on the benefits

we have to offer, everyone is better off. People need what

we have to offer them. Thru the PCCS, you have the oppor-

tunity to give time and share your much needed knowledge.

Our society achieves that through regular participation at

local health fairs, exhibits and sporting events.

In coordination with the Pinellas County Schools, we have

been helping with scoliosis screenings. However, this year

will be different than the past. There will be a specific day

where prescreened kids will visit with the assigned doctor.

This is in efforts by the county, to make your volunteer time

more effective. There are schools that need to be filled, but

you must be a PCCS member to participate.

In these times of political and insurance uncertainty, I would

like to help bring speakers to our monthly meetings that

help promote ideas and practical information that make us

more successful.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the Holiday Party,

which will be held as the Indian Rocks Beach Holiday Inn

Harborside Friday November 30th. So make sure to mark

your calendars.

Is Your Office Dispensing TENS Units?

Don't Get Yourself into Trouble.

Your office may unknowingly be violating Florida law by dispensing or selling transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) units to your patients. TENS units havelong been the subject of controversy, While there is littledebate on the efficacy of providing relief for many conditions,there have been challenges with regulations, reimbursementand less than scrupulous third party providers of these units.Long ago our office established of policy of selling TENSunits, when appropriate, directly to the patient for a reasonable price that correlated with our cost. Insurancecases were, of course, charged exactly the same. At thispoint, I do not provide TENS units to my patients. Afterreading this article, you may opt to change your office policytoo.

Currently Florida law requires any person selling TENS unitsto be licensed as a home medical provider by the FloridaAgency for Health Care Administration (AHCA). Theagency’s rules capture TENS units as durable medicalequipment, the sale of which requires the home medicalequipment (HME) license. Items specifically excluded from

requiring a license include splints, braces and aids customfabricated by a licensed health care practitioner and TENSunits used by a practitioner in the course of their practice.AHCA investigates complaints of selling TENS units or otherHME without a license. Fines of up to $5,000 per day andcriminal penalties may be imposed for violations.

The statutes and rules concerning the dispensing of homemedical equipment can be found on the AHCA web site:acha.myflorida.com. The twelve page application to becomea home medical provider, so that you can dispense TENSunits, is available at that same web site. The cost for thislicense is $300 (biennial) and there is a $400 inspection fee.

Although TENS units can certainly by a safe and effectiveoption for the reduction of your patients symptoms. I recommend you have the required licensing before distributing any to your patients.

The Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health(JPMFH) published a case study on August 16,2012, documenting the case of a young girlwith scoliosis who was helped with chiropracticcare. An additional study published in the June2012 issue of the Journal of ChiropracticMedicine (JCM) reports on an additional case ofidiopathic scoliosis being helped with chiropracticcare.

Scoliosis is classified as AIS (affectingadolescent) when it is detected at age 10or above. The authors note that this form affectsbetween 3 and 5 percent of adolescents and ismore common in girls.

The authors of the JPMFH study noted that thereare two medical forms of treatment for AIS whichinclude bracing or surgery. They note that thebracing option carries self esteem problems as thechild is required to wear the brace upwards of 23hours per day. The surgical option is limited inresults and often requires multiple procedurescosting upward of half-a-million dollars. They notethat there are multiple separate studies ofchiropractic helping AIS in various publications.

In the case in the JPMFH, an eleven-year-old girlwas brought to the chiropractor because hermother was concerned with posturalabnormalities she observed in her daughter. TheJCM case involved a nine-year-old girl who wasalso suffering with AIS and was brought to achiropractor. Both children received a variety ofchiropractic examination procedures, and both hadspinal x-rays. The x-rays were measured forcurvature angles with both girls having a 22degree curve at their worst point.

In both these cases Chiropractic care was initiatedutilizing different forms of chiropractic care foreach of the two girls. Both girls were seen by thechiropractor multiple times on regular schedulesover several months. Both girls were also subse-quently re-evaluated and comparative x-rays wereperformed.

Subsequent re-evaluations and x-rays showed thatboth the nine year-old and eleven year-old showedcorrections of the curvatures measuring 55 per-cent and 13 percent respectively. The case in theJCM noted that the young girl did not show anypsychological issues sometimes observed withother forms of care for scoliosis. The authorsof the JPMFH article noted that, in addition to thecurvature improvements in their case, this patientalso experienced decreased pain, increased rangeof motion, and improved quality of sleep.
