right or left, the winners win from the center. Run from the center and then govern from the right, which is how I see it. Unfortunately many of us have received emails and anony-mous letters telling us to vote for so and so, or that so and

so has done something that the sender finds offensive, (but does not have the courage to sign their missive). I have a good idea who instigates these letters and rumors, and I’m here to tell you that I am sick of it. We have a great Country because we, the people, have differing opinions and, hopefully after the prima-ry, these will result in a consensus which will make our Country even stronger. August 26th is an important date…..I do not care who you choose to throw your vote behind as long as it goes to a Re-publican! Then, on August 27th let’s all agree to work together to elect the win-ner – no matter what! Off to the barn!

Thoughts from the Saddle… by Joan Lang, Palo Verde RW President

Page 2 President’s Message

We heard from Secretary of State Bennett that after the primaries we all need to put our differences aside and support the Republican candidates who comes out on top. We have heard this from our Legislative District Chair-

man, our County Chairman and our GOP Chairman. So, why is this so hard for us to do?? For me it is a no-brainer, I will vote for the candidate who has an “R” next to his/her name. I will not sit out and not vote because he or she has some differing points of view than I do on the issues. After all, if we really want to affect change, we must be in charge. We will not win if we hold candidates to a litmus test that only revolve around the social issues, immigra-tion, education, job creation or health care. We are in this mess now because so many people opted out of the last election. Standing on principal is an honorable thing, but not when standing on principal results in the continued election of Democrats. No one wins running from the extreme, be it

Some little known facts about “Global Warming”

A recent survey listed 20 concerns voters have. Almost at the bottom, #19, was Global Warming (GW). Why this lack of con-

cern? Maybe people are learning that our earth has not warmed in 17 years!

It's understandable, however, that it has taken so long for the public to be doubtful of the GW alarmists when the media is so

biased. They promote the belief the earth is warming at a dangerous rate; or, as they often say now, the "climate is chang-

ing." (Of course, the climate changes constantly!) Rarely do they allow scientists who are skeptical of global warming to speak

on radio or TV, nor do they publish their articles. For example, CBS and ABC have not included such a scientist on their programs

for well over three years! But they frequently promote advocates who espouse GW.

When a manipulated series of emails by scientists at University of East Anglia in England was exposed internationally, the US media was forced to cover it, minimally at least. Although these scientists denied altering their material, an implication remains that they had agreed among themselves not to publish or email data that did not comport with their predictions.

The Palo Verde Republican Women’s

club cannot endorse primary candi-

dates, but members of the club can

help out the candidates. On Saturday,

May 24th, Andrew Walter, candidate

for U.S. House of Representatives in AZ

CD9, hosted a Pancake Breakfast, and

several of Palo Verde’s members

attended including Nancy Pryor and

Cheryl Pelletier. They journeyed to the

Tempe campaign office to check out

what was happening and to volunteer

their time for office projects. Also run-

ning in this race is Wendy Rogers. The

winner of the Republican primary will

go head to head with freshman Rep.

Kyrsten Sinema (Democrat), who cur-

rently represents AZ CD9.

Marilyn Hayden, one of our members, wrote a Guest Editorial for the Sonoran News on April 30th! Marilyn

knows a thing or two about the myth of “global warming.” Read it to arm yourself with the facts.

If you couldn’t attend our May Governor’s Candidate Forum, you missed a good one! Over 100 attendees heard from four of the candidates: State Treasurer, Doug Ducey, former U.S. Representative, Frank Riggs, Secretary of State, Ken Bennett, and Mesa Mayor, Scott Smith. Christine Jones and John Moli-na were unable to attend as originally scheduled. The forum was moderated by Tyler DiGrazia, a young conservative from Arizona State University! Great job Tyler!

The goal of our Palo

Verde Republican

Women’s Communi-

ty Service Com-

mittee for 2014-

2016 is to find ways

to meet with African

-Americans, Asians,

Hispanics, and Women to help them understand Republican

Values so that they will want to become a member of the

Republican Party. A member of our committee, Dr. C.T.

Wright, invited two black Republican Pastors to one of our

meetings to suggest ways we could accomplish our goal.

They told us we must go through the churches and their

Pastors to reach the African-American people. They also

told us it would take time, we needed to visit with the peo-

ple and get to know them before election time.

So on Sunday morning May 18 nine members (and spouses)

of Palo Verde Republican Women’s Club’s Community Ser-

vice Committee attended Bethesda Community Baptist

Church at the invitation of its Pastor, Rev. James N. Preston.

The Vista del Camino Food Bank

Always Needs Your Help!

Please consider bringing the following food and toi-

letries items to our next meeting:

Critical Food Needs:

Juice boxes, apple sauce, peanut butter, crackers,

mac and cheese boxes, canned goods, pasta, and

cereal.

Toiletries:

Tooth brushes, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, feminine

hygiene products, men’s and women’s razors, shav-

ing cream, lotions and deodorant.

Also attending along with

us and at the invitation of

Dr. Wright was Robert

Graham, the State Repub-

lican Party Chairman, and

his sons, and Rev. Clyde

Bowen, the chairman of

the Arizona American Afri-

can Republican Com-

mittee, and his wife. It

was truly a joyful and up-

lifting experience.

We were greeted warmly by all the members of the con-

gregation. They came to individually say hello and shake

our hands. The music during the service was excellent. We

could participate or not, but by the end of the service all of

us were singing

and clapping.

However, the

most outstanding

part of the experi-

ence was listening

to Rev. Preston.

He is a magnificent minister!!!! At the beginning of his ser-

mon he sang “Blessed Assurance”. At first I listened, then I

sang with him, and I’ve been singing it to myself for the

past couple of days. Wow! He has a beautiful singing

voice. But the best was yet to come—his sermon was so

powerful. He was speaking to each one of us individually in

such a positive manner. His members responded to him by

making comments and clapping. All of us joined in. It was

truly a joyous occasion!

The purpose of our visit was to make new friends but it be-

came much more than that! We will certainly go back

again and hope to establish some friendships with Rev.

Preston, his wife Lady Irene, and other members of their

congregation. We also have a stronger relationship with a

God who is Good, Great, and Gracious!

A young U.S. Marine from Arizona stationed in Okinawa wrote to a friend in the United States a few days before Christmas (2013). I share with you a brief part of his heartfelt letter. “I don’t think I’ll ever get used to so much rain…all I can think about or even focus on are how much I miss my family. This will be the second year I

have been away from home for Christmas but for many others it is going on their 3rd, 4th, or even 5th year of being away. The one thing I look forward to the most in the world is going home and hugging my mother and kissing my girl-friend and sharing a beer with my brother.”

Ms. Tami Ketteman of Ohio wrote about her son now serving in Afghanistan: “The little hands full of dirt and dandeli-

ons that gave me my first bouquet now hold a weapon that gives you freedom. Now there is a young man with strong

broad shoulders standing at my door holding a green duffle bag. He

doesn’t want to go, but it is his duty. He has tears in his eyes. ‘I’ll miss you

mom.’ He whispers. ‘I’ll miss you too my son. I’ll miss you too.”

But for the eternal vigilance of our military are men and women serving

this Great United States of America, you see them in the movie seat next

to you on any Saturday night, or smiling when you passed at Church.

For Freedom many miles from home they endure. In the hurry of our busy

lives, we seldom think of the men and women who served American

and the many who still bear the burden of defending freedom.

As of January 2014, 2,299 military deaths had occurred in Operation Enduring Freedom. 19,572 wounded have

suffered such injuries as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), and amputations of one or

more full or partial hand or foot. These wounds are our wounds carried in the hearts and lives of those who have

served and protected us.

Let us always remember Thomas Jefferson’s words: "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance." For the dead, the living,

and the wounded, in every war, honor these brave men and women. Please remember to support Palo Verde’s

Wreaths Across America Program.

Did you know that Palo Verde Republican Women is

just one of many Republican Women’s clubs in Arizo-

na that is chartered by the National Federation of

Republican Wom-

en? If you have a

Facebook page, show your support of our state federation by

joining the Arizona Federation of Republican Women Face-

book group.

strong, and together we will

social networking to win in

November!

Eileen Fiedler, Palo Verde RW Member, Received This From A Republican Friend!

"A bump in the road" ..... remember that calloused state-ment? I don't know the author of this poem. Received it today. Very thought provoking and poignant. I do recall, however, the President referring to the Benghazi incident as "a bump in the road." Today I heard an ex-Navy Seal being interviewed on Fox News regarding a book he has written about how to handle crisis situations in our lives. At the end of the interview he asked if he could make a com-ment on Benghazi and of course the anchor said yes. He then thanked Fox News for keeping the Benghazi story in the news, since other news organizations are not. He said the Seals who died deserve the public knowing the truth about the whole affair. The poem was written by a MARINE CORPS Officer (name unknown).

THE BATTLING BOYS OF BENGHAZI We're the battling boys of Benghazi No fame, no glory, no paparazzi Just a fiery death in a blazing hell Defending our country we loved so well.

It wasn't our job, but we answered the call, Fought to the Consulate and scaled the wall. We pulled twenty Countrymen from the jaws of fate Led them to safety, and stood at the gate. Just the two of us, and foes by the score,

But we stood fast to bar the door. Three calls for reinforcement, but all were denied, So we fought, and we fought, and we fought 'til we died. We gave our all for our Uncle Sam, But Barack Obama didn't give a damn. Just two dead seals who carried the load No thanks to us.....we were just "Bumps In The Road."

So will this reach every American with a computer? Or do we act like the press and give a pass to the incompetent people who literally sat there in the White House and watched the Seal's execution on live streaming video and did absolutely nothing? The Obama Administration obviously won't be held ac-countable because we apparently accept Hilary Clinton's statement, “What difference does it make?”

Paula Linker Republicans stand for choices and expect people to make informed, educated choices. That is the best process to arrive at the best candidates.

This year’s cycle on our side seems to be more contentious than any other I have seen here. This is truly and deeply re-grettable, as well as very troubling.

Our primary selections are important. More often than not, voters do not switch from one line to the other. So the top of the ticket will hold down the ballot. The Dems have uncontested primary candidates who will emerge on Aug. 27, un-bloodied, unified and wealthy.

WE MUST EMERGE UNIFIED ON AUG. 27. I’m sure you will research, evaluate, and make thoughtful rather than emotional decisions.

The Goal Is To Defeat The Democrats—NOT Ourselves! We Must Unify On Aug, 27 Primaries Are Positive Because They Provide Choices And We Must Not Let Differences Divide Friendships

Obama's Economy Isn't Working For Veterans

It's Not Just Veterans' Care - Obama's Sluggish Economy Is Also Leaving Behind Many Veterans In America

RHETORIC: OBAMA PROMISED POLICIES TO HELP VETERANS "LEAD US INTO THE 21st CENTURY"

In August 2009, Obama Promised That The Post-9/11 G.I. Bill Would Help "Those Who Have Borne The Heaviest Burden Lead Us Into The

21st Century." "In early August of 2009, President Barack Obama stood with a group of young soldiers at George Mason University in Virginia and

proudly announced that the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill, which he'd sponsored in the Senate, had taken effect. 'This is not simply a debt that we are repaying to

the remarkable men and women who have served,' Obama said of the bill, which provides tuition and housing support to veterans. 'We are letting

those who have borne the heaviest burden lead us in to the 21st century.'" (Rosie Gray, "For Thousands Of Veterans, The New G.I. Bill Isn't Work-

ing," BuzzFeed, 3/8/12)

In November 2011, Obama Signed An Executive Order "To Give Tax Credits To Employers Who Hire Post-9/11 Veterans And Wounded Warri-

ors." "President Barack Obama announced executive orders today to give tax credits to employers who hire post-9/11 veterans and wounded warri-

ors, as well as enhanced career counseling and related services for veterans." (Donna Miles, "Obama Announces Jobs Initiatives For Veter-

ans," American Forces Press Service, 11/9/11)

The Director Of Obama's Veterans Task Force Said Obama's Executive Action "Won't Create Jobs For Veterans." "Matt Flavin, the veterans task force director, said Obama's new executive action won't create jobs for veterans. 'In terms of creating new jobs, what we're doing, you're right, is giving veterans access to many of the jobs that there are that they are qualified to do,' he said." (Matt Negrin, "New Effort Won't Create Jobs," Politico, 11/7/11)

Noteworthy! With Loralee DeSanto as

Ronald Reagan once said:

As long as we remember our first principles and believe in ourselves, the future will always be ours.

Are you married? Yes, to Alton Archer, for 59 years. Children? If yes, how many. Names? Two daughters, Cindy Seaman married to Kirk Seaman. They reside in Arcadia, California. And Cheryl Pelletier, mar-ried to Leonard Pelletier, who live in Scottsdale, Arizona. Grandchildren? Ages and names? Melissa Jessup (30) who lives in Bur-bank, California, Shannon Jessup (27) who lives in Scottsdale, Arizona. And Max Pelletier (27), who lives in Phoe-nix, Arizona. Any pets? Two grand pets: Thomas (a six-year-old Manchester Terrier/Boston Terrier mix) and Tora (a one- year-old Akida). Hobbies/What do you do in your free time? My husband and I play lots and lots of Bridge. We like to attend and host gourmet dinner parties, plus spend time with friends and family. My hus-band and I also volunteer at church (Scottsdale Bible Church) and I also belong to a local group of Questers, a non-profit organi-zation which encourages an ap-preciation of antiques and histo-ry. Finally we love summering in Lake Arrowhead, California and boating on Lake Arrowhead. Education/Career? I worked for the city of Glendale, California from 1950 to 1959 and then again from 1973 to 1989. I also was extremely active with the Glendale Sym-phony Orchestra bringing members of the orchestra into the schools, to promote music to young students. Where are you from originally? What brought you to Arizona? How long have you lived here? I was born in Hollywood, California. I grew up in Alhambra and Glendale, California and lived in Glendale until we made our move to Arizona. We moved to Arizona after the

Northridge, CA earthquake. We’d been thinking of moving for a while and that earthquake was the last straw. It turned out we picked a perfect time to move as our daughter, Cheryl plus her husband and son, moved here from Chicago

at about the same time. What got you involved in politics? I’ve always been involved. I worked the polls at election time since I was first married. Back then the ballots were long and we counted the results by hand. As a result, we were up until 4 a.m. counting the votes. I’ve always been a Republican and I’ve always been interested in what is happening within our country. The first president I voted for was Eisenhower. I come from a Re-publican family. But I married a Demo-crat who early on after our marriage

switched sides and became a Re-publican. Finally, please let us know any-thing else about you that you wouldn't mind sharing with us. Editor’s note: Since I am the editor of the newsletter, and Marilynn is my mom, I thought I would inter-ject here. When mom was a girl, she practiced the piano for hours. She played beautifully. As a result, her piano teacher wanted her to try out for The Juilliard School in New York City but mom would have none of it. So one day, at

mom’s piano lesson, her piano teacher called someone at The Juilliard School and placed the phone down (without mom knowing). Mom’s teacher asked mom to play some music, which mom did. After she was done, the piano teacher had mom talk to the person listening at the other end who, on the spot, offered mom a scholarship to attend their prestigious school. Typically you were expected to try out in person, so this was quite unheard of! Mom didn’t take them up on their offer, because she had met my dad, and didn’t want to go that far away (mom’s mother never forgave my dad for this!). My sister and I sure are glad she didn’t go!

This month we are featuring someone who is new to our group, Marilynn Archer. Marilynn is mother to Palo

Verde RW member, Cheryl Pelletier, who is the editor of this newsletter.

Palo Verde Republican Women (PVRW) was

chartered in January 1974 under the guidance

of Mrs. Joan Wood who became the club’s first

president. Most of the charter members had

been a part of Scottsdale Republican Women,

one of the most active groups in the state of

Arizona. The club eventually withdrew from

the National Federation of Republican Women

and member Joan Wood and others who

wished to remain in the Federation formed

PVRW. From the beginning, PVRW maintained

a reputation as a vigorous and active club, and

has remained a powerful force within the Fed-

eration to this day. We educate our members

through programs presented at our monthly

meetings (the third Wednesday of every

month—except July and August), through our

monthly newsletter (The Patriot), and by

attending AzFRW quarterly meetings.
