December 1, marks the beginning of Advent for

the preparation on celebrating the birth of Jesus

Christ. The four Sundays preceding Christmas

are recognized by four virtues; hope, peace, joy

and love. It is a busy time for the church. The

church is decorated with evergreen, wreaths,

Christmas trees, Advent candles and poinsettias. The stable is

placed in the sanctuary where Jesus, Mary, Joseph, shepherds,

wise men and animals are represented.. The Sunday School

children will receive Advent activities to be shared with their

family and the annual children’s Christmas program will be

performed. The Giving Tree will be in the Welcome Center from

which anyone may choose to add something special for those in

need. The Chancel Choir, children’s choir and the bell choirs are

rehearsing music for Advent and Christmas. The church band will

bring special music to those in nursing homes. Wonderful

handcrafted items will be available for sale at the Fair Trade

Market with the proceeds allowing people from impoverished

countries to earn a fair wage for their work. Carolers will bring

music to the shut-ins. This is a great way for those of any age to

share their voices. The caroling this year will be followed by a

Our hope is that your family will experience Christmas together in a meaningful way this holiday

season; and the Advent in an Ornament will help towards that goal. All families of our church can

pick up an Advent bag on Sunday, December 1. Grandparents can pick up one to do with their

grandkids. No kids? All are a part of our church family. May the Holy Spirit bless you, during this

activity to find special meaning to your journey this year to Christmas. Only 100 Advent Bags

available.

************************************

SAVE THE DATE: Our Sunday School Christmas Program is on Sunday, December 15, at the 10:30 a.m. service.

Wrapping All the Way is a kid’s Christmas musical. Everyone loves to hear our children sing-especially at

Christmas, so let the joy of the season ring throughout our church as our children present Wrapping All the Way.

Refreshments will be served following the service.

Rehearsals for the Christmas program are Saturday, December 7, and 14, at 10:30 a.m.

BLUE CHRISTMAS SERVICE

Thursday, December 19

Christmas Day will be here before we know it! It

will be a time when families and friends will

celebrate the end of anticipation, and the birth of

the Messiah. Hope will finally arrive wrapped in a

manger. People will feast, sing, give, laugh and share in the

celebration of the Immanuel, God with us.

However, the reality is that not everyone experiences joy this time

of year. Holidays can bring about painful memories that remind us

of persons whom we have loved and lost. We grieve traditions that

have long been practiced but won’t feel quite the same, or change

completely. There may be other reasons why this season will be

difficult. Perhaps you have lost your job and with it the security it

brings. Maybe you just feel lost at the moment, and uncertain about

what the future might hold. It may not feel like the “holly jolly”

Christmas everyone is talking about.

On Thursday, December 19, at 6:30 p.m., we will be having a

Blue Christmas service in the sanctuary, for anyone in the

community that needs a place to feel blue with others who find this

season difficult. It will be a time of silent reflection and prayer.

If you would like to purchase a Poinsettia in honor or in memory of a loved one, request an envelope from an usher

on Sunday morning, or pick one up in the church office. Complete the form on the front, and include a check for

STAR TREE

The Star Tree is in the Lobby. Choose one or more stars from the tree which has a name and a gift request for

Christmas. The gifts go to the children and adults in need from various places, including Hoyleton, Bridges of Hope,

Kindercottage, a women’s shelter, as well as several local families.

Wrap the gift and secure the star on top of the gift. Return the gift to the Star Tree no later than Sunday,

December 8 (before would be helpful.)

Donation of money will gladly be accepted to purchase gifts for any unreturned stars or for those who do not like to

shop. If for any reason you cannot purchase the gift on your star, please return the star or call the church office as

soon as possible. If anyone would like to help separate or deliver gifts, contact Barb in the church office.

BREAKFAST WITH MARY AND JOSEPH

The Junior Youth Fellowship (JYF) is pleased to present our 13th

Annual Pancake Breakfast with Mary and Joseph on Saturday,

eat pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee. Food will be served from

8 a.m. - 10 a.m. with our multi-generational nativity skit at 9 a.m.

You will also have the opportunity to make gingerbread houses,

and take goofy pictures at the Christmas Photo Booth. Tickets can

be purchased at the door: $5 per adult, $2.50 for children 12 and

under, free for those under 3. All are invited! We hope to see you

there!

FAIR TRADE CHRISTMAS MARKET

in a developing country.

PUMPKIN HUNT REPORT

The 2019 Pumpkin Hunt was held on October 19 and was an

evening filled with games, prizes, raffle baskets and lots of fun.

The emphasis of the event is to be a fun-raiser, giving folks in the

church the opportunity to get to know each other a bit better. We

hope that all who attended enjoyed seeing old friends and getting to

know some new folks. The event raised $1,582.01, which has

been put in the Renovation Fund. The committee wishes to thank

all who participated, donated prizes or baskets and provided

babysitting service for the event or helped in any way.

LET’S GO TO THE MOVIES!

Join us for a movie! All are invited to

gather at our church on Sunday,

December 8, to caravan to the movie

theatre to watch A Beautiful Day in The

Neighborhood; have some popcorn and

then come back to church for a short

discussion and desserts! We will leave

church for the movie at 1 p.m.

After a jaded magazine writer is

assigned a profile of Fred Rogers, he

overcomes his skepticism, learning

about empathy, kindness and decency

from America’s most beloved neighbor.

Tom Hanks portrays Mister Rogers, a

timely story of kindness triumphing over

cynicism, based on the true story of a

real-life friendship… between Fred

Rogers and the journalist, Tom Junod.

Exact time and place for movie to be

announced. Any questions, please

contact Pastor Keith or Denise Johnson.

CARE CONNECTION

Where the church is, there is mission. Where the church

is there are those who have been called to live “for the

sake of others.”

The above message is the United Church of Christ

Mission Statement on Health and Human Services

established in 1997. It was the sole means to help

churches develop an awareness of congregational health

ministry and faith community nursing in order to

establish aspects of holistic caring for the body, mind,

and spirit into their own ministries as appropriate to

their needs of their congregation. All of those words to

develop the Parish Nurse Program! Our church has had

a very informal aspect of this, and now I am honored to

be recognized as the official Parish Nurse. To meet the

needs of the congregation, communication is required

to know of a special need. Please reach out!!

HOLIDAY STRESS

Besides making the perfect dinner, or getting the right

gifts on your shopping list, or grieving the loss of a

family member, the holiday season can cause worry,

anxiety and fear which can effect your health. Reading

scriptures may comfort you and give you peace at this

time.

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God;

believe also in me.” John 14:1

“I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me

from all my fears.” Psalm 34:4

“Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will

worry about itself.” Mathew 6:34

BUTTER BRAID REPORT

Thanks to all who sold or ordered Butter Braids, Cookie Dough or Pizza. I hope you all enjoy them. Our

church operating fund benefited by $1,309.20 for selling 200 items (the minimum quantity for which the

company sorts our entire order making pick up morning so much easier). Huge thanks again go to our top two

sellers Cathie Krueger ($531) and Shirley Harres ($520). Also to Evelyn Stumpf for meeting the delivery man

and me there early to help sort and organize so we can efficiently deliver all the goods in an hour. Wishing you

the best for the upcoming holidays.

KINDERCOTTAGE IS A MODEL PROGRAM IN

ST. LOUIS FOOD BANK

Did you know that Uni-Pres Kindercottage

participates in the St. Louis Food Bank? All

summer long, food is brought to Kindercottage on

certain days and community residents may come

and receive free food. The partners who donate the

food are so impressed with the work that

Kindercottage does in the East St. Louis

community that they are glad to share their food

with them. They know that the food will go to

people who really need it. Maya Summers, the

representative of the St. Louis Food Bank, wrote

to Kindercottage to thank them for all they do. In

fact, Maya has brought representatives from other

communities who want to model the distribution

that Kindercottage does in East St. Louis. Cahokia

is being considered as another site for food

distribution.

VETERANS OF THE CROSS

How the Funds Are Used

One of the unique aspects of the Christmas Fund is that the

funds provide direct financial assistance to individual UCC

clergy and lay church employees – the funds do not

support programs or institutions, but people. With your

continued generosity, more individuals will receive the

support of the Church in their time of need.

Our congregation will receive the Christmas Fund

Offering on Sunday, December 22. Envelopes for this

offering can be found in this Pathfinder or by asking an

usher at worship service. Say a prayer and then give as

God guides you to this important offering.

OUR ANNUAL CHRISTMAS OFFERING

The Christmas Offering Envelope found in your envelope

packet offers an opportunity for you to share gifts with

ministries to children and families. This offering is divided

among the following children's ministries: Hoyleton Youth

& Family Services, Kindercottage and DuBois Center.

Thank you for your generosity!

Memorial Hospital has suspended receiving

magazines until January 21; however, we will

continue to receive books and save for January

21. You may recycle your magazines in the

containers near the Eagle's Wing until then.

Please notify the church office if you would like to help reduce the use of paper and the cost of postage,

by choosing to receive the Pathfinder by email only.
