RENOVATIONS

All of the flat roofs have been sealed thanks to the labors of Bill Lewis, Rudy Landgraf, Dale Stumpf, Don Gericke, Bob Habermehl, and Jody Johnson.

The week of June 12 has been set aside for Vacation Bible School clean-up and the preparation by our volunteers before the contractors begin their work. The week of June 19 the destruction and construction will commence. Please be patient throughout the summer during this renovation time. We will keep you as up-to-date as possible.

Save the date - June 12

This year our Worship Picnic will be a celebration of the Surf Shack: Catch the Wave of God’s Amazing Love! Vacation Bible School (June 6-10).

The 9 a.m. service will be held in the sanctuary, with the 10:30 a.m. service to be held at the Eagle’s Wing. Food and fun follow the second service. Our special music guests will be the Band Room Brass. Barbeque and drinks will be provided by our own group of volunteers and those coming to the picnic are requested to bring the side dishes and desserts. Lunch and picnic activities will begin following the second service. Activities for all ages will be available: Bingo, GaGa Tournament, organized soccer drills, an introduction to the labyrinth and much more will be available as a part of the festivities. Bring your friends and neighbors.

If you have beach, island or surf décor you are willing to share for the picnic; OR you can help with setup on the 11th, please contact Pastor Kris in the church office.

The co-chairs of our Capital Campaign Committee are Tom Kuergeleis and Carlyle Wilde. They are planning several “special events” to go along with our traditional pledge campaign. Fun and Festivities will be a part of all we do!!! Watch for more on Sunday, June 12.

Parents, if you have an incoming eighth grader, you should be receiving a confirmation registration packet in the mail. You can register using the form in that packet or online through www.stpaulucc4u.org. We must have all registrations in the office by July 1 in order to reserve space for the Confirmation Retreat and other preparations we need to make. If you have questions or concerns please contact Pastor Kris or Denise Johnson through the church office.

Starting on Sunday, June 19, (Father’s Day), all first through fifth grade children will still attend church with parents until the children’s message; they will then be dismissed to our summer classroom, the Preschool room across from Pastor Kris’ office. Please pick up children from this room.

What’s Happening at St. Paul?

Vacation Bible School is June 6-10

This year’s theme is Surf Shack: Catch the Wave of God’s Amazing Love!

While at the Surf Shack we will: *experience God’s amazing love

*explore God’s mission for our lives *encounter powerful water stories from the Bible

*discover ways to live out God’s amazing love!

At Surf Shack VBS, we will help our children catch the wave of God’s amazing love through missions, dramas, crafts, science activities, music and lots of fun!

The first 50 families to register will receive a “Surf Shack” music cd.

Join the Summer Lunch Program

St. Paul UCC, Columbia, will begin its partnership with Bethel UCC of Cahokia to provide free lunches, Monday through Friday, for children in Cahokia through the TWIGS program. (Bethany United Methodist Church provides this same ministry for the children of Columbia.) St. Paul will be responsible for one of two lunch sites.

Volunteers are needed to load up lunches, take them to the site and distribute the lunches to children. If you can't volunteer every week but would like to be added to the alternate list, that would be great. Volunteers may call Kathleen Habermehl at 314-440-4152 or 618-281-4613.

Our first day of the TWIGS program is Wednesday, June 1.

It is that time of year again - when the gardeners are planting and tending to their home gardens. Over the years, Care Connection has sponsored the Share the Harvest program when members donate their excess produce and then a free will donation is given by those wanting any of the produce. The proceeds for this year’s project will be given to the Building Fund.

Gardening provides fresh air, exercise, sunshine, with the sights and sounds affecting our physical and mental health as well as our spiritual well being. In the garden, patience, humility, and a respect for creation of things are required. More people are looking for healthier eating habits and are reaching out to farmers markets. God provides all of this and we can see his hand at work with the gardens.

Did you know that as part of our financial assistance ministries we partner with the Columbia Police Department to provide resources for stranded motorists, transients and others in crisis?

Six to ten times a year someone in crisis comes to the police station or flags down a Columbia Police Officer

asking for help. In addition to having Columbia Clergy Association gas and grocery vouchers available for the officers to give out, we provide gift cards for McDonalds, the 66 station and MotoMart. For several years now, folks have been fed and gas tanks filled by us through our police officers. Your pastors are proud of this partnership and we thought you ought to know about it.

We thank Emily Thoman and Sue Phillips for their leadership this past year with our children’s music ministry. We also thank Emily for her leadership with the evening adult bell choir and the chancel choir, as well as Patti French for her leadership with the morning adult bell choir. The music for both May 8 and May 15 was filled with celebration!

We were blessed to have the St. Paul Band play on May 22 under the direction of Sue Phillips. They not only play several times a year in worship, but they provide a major outreach into the broader community as they play for many nursing homes, adult living complexes, and for many other organizations and gatherings throughout the area.

As has been the case for many years, Lori Morton wonderfully accompanies our vocal choirs and our congregational singing with pipe organ and piano music. We give thanks for the many ways God has blessed us with faithful leadership and participants in this important ministry of St. Paul.

Wishing everyone a happy, fun and safe summer! Due to vacations and summer schedules, the table will be open once a month during the summer. When you need your coffee, tea or chocolate and we are not open, just ask one of us and we will be happy to help you. Stop by June 12 or catch Nicole Avise-Rouse, Laura Hoguet, Shirley Hoy, Sharon Redinger or Debbie Volmert.

STEPHEN MINISTRY

We will be promoting Stephen Ministry over the summer as we look for volunteers to receive training in September through the Stephen Ministry at St. Paul UCC in Waterloo. A Stephen Minister is a trained volunteer who would provide lay spiritual guidance to someone during a particularly difficult time in their life. It is also good training for lay people who are always at a loss for words when a friend of theirs pours their heart out and your immediate thought is: “I have nothing.” Stephen Ministry training will offer an approach for you to use in a variety of settings in your life. You may register for the September training session by calling the church office or filling out a registration form in the church bulletin beginning June 12. (ALERT!!! Training is not an afternoon workshop, but 50 hours of training. By the end, you will be ready to begin as a Stephen Minister.)

ILLINOIS SOUTH CONFERENCE MEETING INFORMATIONAL GATHERINGS

A reminder to our Conference Delegates and others who are interested, the Illinois South Conference Meeting Informational Gatherings will be held on the following dates:

Sunday, September 11 (Staunton, 3-5pm); Thursday, September 15 (Hecker, 7-9pm); Sunday, September 18 (Marion, 3-5pm)

ISC Annual Meeting this year is October 21-23 at the Rend Lake Conference Center.

Kathleen Habermehl is serving as our contact with Bethel UCC in Cahokia in assisting with their summer lunch program. The volunteers met to attend an in-service for this program and visit the Bethel church in Cahokia, as well as a visit to the lunch site.

Prayers for those going on the Back Bay Mission trip from June 12 – June 18. Gooey Butter Cake sales for Back Bay Mission was held this past month. The crew baked on Friday afternoon/evening and on Saturday morning and raised over $800.

Fund Raising Thank you to all who participated in the Rummage Sale which brought in a little over $4,000. Special thanks to Carlyle and Sarah Wilde who provide great leadership for this event.

Summer camp at DuBois Center is a unique experience, full of opportunities to unplug and grow in faith-face to face. Surrounded by new friends in God’s creation, campers find a safe space to discover the courage to be themselves and followers of Christ. Relationship building and faith –focused activities woven throughout each day: from creek walks to campfires, beach fun to bedtime. Courage in Community: Fearless Faith explores some of the most epic stories in the Bible. We’ll play, pray, create, serve and learn as we discover community with stories from the Bible. lunch for the family of June Weisenborn on April 26. Those who helped were Lea Berry, Darleen Gummersheimer, Evelyn Stumpf, Ellen Lewis and I. I sent a meat and cheese tray for the visitation for Mary Ann Kopp on May 9. I sent a meat and cheese tray for the visitation for Dolores Bergmann on May 20. God's Little Mealmakers provided the meat and cheese for each member. I would like to remind everyone to take home leftovers and not leave them in the refrigerator or freezer. Hoyleton Hike/Bike was held at Maeystown on Saturday morning, May 7. It was a beautiful day to interact with members of a variety of churches as well as youth from the Hoyleton Ministry.

We hope you are enjoying the new carillon system! Some have said it is too loud as you walk into church on Sunday mornings, while others enjoy being able to hear it while sitting on their porch at 6:00 p.m. every evening. We

have tried to set the volume in order to provide a balance between the two.

From January 1946 to September 1947, author Flannery O’Connor kept a journal that was, in essence, a series of prayers. She was not twenty-one years of age when she began this journal, and at twenty-two, when she wrote the last entry, it was clear that her prayer journal had already made a difference in her life. Here is one of her entries.

Dear God, I cannot love Thee the way I want to. You are the slim crescent of a moon that I see and my self is the

earth’s shadow that keeps me from seeing all the moon… I do not know you God because I am in the way.

Please help me to push myself aside… I do not mean to deny the traditional prayers I have said all my life; but I have been saying them and net feeling them.

My attention is always very fugitive. This way I have it every instant. I can feel a warmth of love heating me when

I think & write this to You.

NATIONAL CANCER SURVIVORS DAY

We may look around us and see all the people that we know that do have cancer at present, undergoing treatment, completed treatment or unable to do further treatment. But do we recognize those walking with us that are SURVIVORS of CANCER?? The first Sunday of June, is an annual, treasured Celebration of Life that is held in communities nationwide and around the world. It is the CELEBRATION for those who have survived, an INSPIRATION for those recently diagnosed, a gathering of SUPPORT for families and an OUTREACH to the community. Thousands gather across the globe to honor survivors and to show that life after a cancer diagnosis can be fruitful, rewarding and even inspiring-- however hard that may sound.

It is a day for everyone, whether you are a survivor, a family member, friend, or medical professional. This day provides celebration of milestones and to recognize those who have supported the survivors along the way. But it is also used to draw attention to the added need of resources, research, and survivor-friendly legislation to improve survivors’ quality of life.

May we celebrate with these family and friends and be grateful to God for their healing. But let us also pray for those we know that were not as fortunate and to those still fighting the battle.

This age-old refrain of young travelers is followed by a second question: “How much longer?” How similar those queries are to the psalmist’s oft-repeated cry, “How long, O LORD, how long?” (Psalm 6:3b, NIV). Patience is an uncommon virtue these days. We’re anxious to get where we’re going or to get what we want. But think how much we miss while wishing we were elsewhere! In our rush to reach a destination, we fail to grasp lessons that can be learned only along the way. What blessings might you be overlooking in the here-and-now and the right-where-you-are?

SUMMER WORSHIP The pastors almost always use the lectionary, a three year cycle scriptures, each year based on one of the gospels: Matthew, Mark and Luke, with John used during special seasons.
