“Our Lord has written the promise of resurrection, not in

books alone, but in every leaf in springtime.” - Martin Luther

Lent and spring, both bring with them a renewal. One of the Spiritual kind, and one

of the more human kind. Lent reflects the forty days that Jesus wandered in the

wilderness — tempted by Satan — in readiness for a ministry destined to end in

tragedy. Few of us can relate to the level of sacrifice and commitment that Jesus

displayed in his forty days, yet Lent provides us with an opportunity to deepen our

spirituality by engaging in regular discipline from Ash Wednesday through Easter

Sunday. The wilderness — the desert days of Lent — is the true path toward

spiritual transformation. In the Spring, seeds that have laid dormant all winter are

awakened and come to life! Jesus referred to seeds and trees, fruit and branches,

throughout his ministry. A seed cannot be planted in poor soil if it is to grow. Nor

can it be rushed. It must be tended to, planted carefully, nurtured and looked after.

The same can be said for our Souls. So let us use this time of Lent to replant the

seed of our Faith, to use it as a time to nurture our Souls, to allow our Spirituality to

grow under the watchful care of the one who planted it, Jesus.

February was once again a very busy Month at our Council! We started off with the

Super Bowl Party run by Kevin Drawbridge and we want to thank him and everyone

who helped him out, it turned out to be a very fun day! We had the 50/50 dinner,

the Valentine’s Day Party, the Free Throw, Movie Night Pizza Party, Fat Tuesday Pot

Luck Dinner and we capped it all off with back to back Membership Drives! And I

want to thank everyone who came down and helped out at all of these events! But

don’t all asleep on us now! March is going to be a busy month too!

Fraternally Yours,

M. Boehm G.K.

DO YOU WANT TO FAST THIS LENT?

In the words of Pope Francis:

* Fast from hurting words and say kind words.

* Fast from sadness and be filled with gratitude.

* Fast from anger and be filled with patience.

* Fast from pessimism and be filled with hope.

* Fast from worries and have trust in God.

* Fast from complaints and contemplate simplicity.

* Fast from pressures and be prayerful.

* Fast from bitterness and fill your hearts with joy.

* Fast from selfishness and be compassionate to others.

* Fast from grudges and be reconciled.

* Fast from words and be silent so you can listen.

In 1977 he received a Master’s Degree in theology from St. John’s University in New York City, after which he worked in various retreat centers and other ministries of his province. Though largely self-taught, he studied art with August Mosca, a noted Long Island artist, from 1984 to 1989. He attended the Art Students League in Manhattan from 1989 to 1990. One of his specialties is painting icons, translating this ancient art form of the Eastern Christian churches, into contemporary terms. His art can be seen on his web site www.angelstudiostore.com. Brother Michael has also served as the chaplain of the Supportive Care Program of St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City, a program that provides support for people with life-threatening illnesses and their caregivers. The victory of stepping into the breach by Father Jonathan D. Kalisch, O.P. Director of Chaplains and Spiritual Development

“Sometimes it’s a victory if I just eat a salad,” I was recently told by a Catholic father who is also a successful medical professional. We were talking about how fasting and making small sacrifices can be great victories for men. It truly is a victory to respond to the needs of the Body of Christ with prayer and fasting regimens. The new rollout of the Into the Breach video series at the start of Lent, presents an opportunity for pastors and council chaplains to guide our brother Knights in the spiritual battles they face within their everyday responsibilities as husbands, fathers, brothers and sons.

Let’s look at how Into the Breach came about. Shortly after he was elected, Pope Francis informally called together leading Catholic women and other experts to study how to proceed in the authentic development of St. John Paul II’s teachings on the dignity of women in the Church. They found that what was needed was for Catholic men to better know, understand and live out their vocations. That’s when Bishop Thomas Olmstead of Phoenix called together the panel of experts on masculine identity and spirituality that influenced the pastoral letter Into the Breach. Now, after several years of promoting Into the Breach, the Knights of Columbus has developed a series of short videos engaging the most important issues discussed in the document. Chaplains are encouraged to work with their councils to show the videos in small group settings, before parish gatherings of men and their families or as part of a day of reflection or Lenten retreat. I have found them to be effective tools to help men overcome spiritual mediocrity, to help them recognize their Christian identity, and to help strengthen them in overcoming spiritual resistance. I hope that this next phase of Into the Breach becomes a useful tool to assist your council to engage with their own vocation and stand in the breach with their brothers. Vivat Jesus! We will be showing the “Into the Breach” video series at our March Social Meeting on Monday March 16th. – M. Boehm GK.
