Pastoral Letter

Dear Church Family, Here we are heading into another Fall season. If you are softball and baseball fans like my family that means “Fall Ball” and the World Series are in the near future. I enjoy many aspects of the game, but especially the relationship between the pitcher and the catcher. The pitcher stands on the mound with his hand clutching the ball behind him. Sometimes he leans forward and squints. The other players stand quietly waiting or fidgeting with their toes in the dirt. The catcher signals, the pitcher shakes his head no, another signal and another no…then suddenly a nod and the game begins or resumes. I liken this to how God has been signaling humanity since creation began. Adam and Eve definitely shook their heads no at God. Nevertheless, scripture is full of others who nodded yes. A few examples are Moses, Esther, Samuel , David, Job, the many prophets, the disciples with Paul and …the Holy Mother. Of course, the greatest yes came from Jesus to his Father…his yes meant his death on a cross… but life for us. Speaking of us…are we even looking to God for his signals…or digging our toes in the dirt. Are we starring intently and leaning forward for the Heavenly signal? Our nod means “Yes, Lord”! It means, perhaps, we take that neighbor a meal, we smile at a difficult person, we join the church choir, we become a Eucharistic Minister, we join a GIFT group, we become an usher, an alter server, a Vacation Bible School helper or youth group leader, a cantor, a priest… a prayer warrior! In other words…“Put me in Coach”! “Thou art my hiding place and shield; I wait for Thy word.” Psalm 119:114 Peace, Dixie Plinski Spiritual Director

Jesus Wants Us To-Follow HIM and enjoy the process!

Please join your St. Joseph Senior Forum this September as we focus on the joyful messages Jesus

offers us. It can be hard with all the earthly issues around us to remember the Joy. Phil Calhoun will

present on “What Brings Me Joy”. The message of Joy is communicated through our faith, with loved ones,

and through our experiences each day. Phil will uncover several FUN and insightful activities

designed to have everyone smiling while learning just a little more about themselves and how Jesus really

does want us to enjoy our faith journey. Phil developed Project LIFE a friendly visitor program for parishioners who meet with young adults to share life stories, one

hour a week for ten weeks. www.projectlifeca.org

KNIGHTS ADDRESS OPIOIDS CRISIS By Joe Pappalardo

WHERE HUNDREDS OVERDOSE, PENNSYLVANIA KNIGHTS EDUCATE COMMUNITY LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — In a single Pennsylvania county, more than 400 people have died from opioid overdoses since 2016. The local Knights of Columbus are doing everything they can to educate their community and save lives. “We were covering all the bases of what a family has to go through,” event organizer David Yonki said. “The emotional stories people told of somebody they’d lost was incredible.” John F. Kennedy Knights of Columbus Council 372 in Pittston organized The Opioid Fact Forum to inform families on the dangers of opioid abuse and speak candidly about the epidemic. The Knights advertised the event through local newspapers and television, bringing 100 people to the forum. Among the speakers were a drug and alcohol specialist, as well as a local judge and a coroner. Finally, a parent who lost a child to opioid abuse spoke, illustrating the horrible truth of the epidemic — those claimed by overdose were often young people. Yonki spearheaded the event along with his brother Knights, handing attendees bags of resources. Along with the Knights council’s local parishes, they invited members of 15 other local churches to attend. The Knights’ diverse marketing strategy also resulted in their event being advertised during Saturday Night Live and the Christian Broadcasting Network on local affiliates. The Knights concluded the event with a question-and-answer session. Attendees used this time to share their own stories of overdose and its effects on their friends and family. The responsiveness of those present showed the Knights had identified a major need in their community. The Knights council also planned a similar event to discuss crime, and Yonki emphasized that other Knights looking to organize an event like this shouldn’t limit themselves to one topic or occasion. “It doesn’t have to be an opioid program,” he said. “It could be a cancer prevention program, a diabetes program — the key thing is know your market and find out if there’s a need, because if there’s a need there’s an audience.” Reaching that audience can be an opportunity to invite men to join the Knights, and, in turn, to grow the number of members who can help tackle the issues facing their community. The Knights made sure to send everyone home with informational bags that included membership applications. “The world that we live in right now is so complicated that there has to be an island of stability for Catholic men to get involved,” Yonki said. “They could be the stewards of that.” (Knights of Columbus, 1 Columbus Plaza, New Haven, CT 06510)

St. Joseph Council 10287 Family of the Month

September 2019

Jesus and Dolores “Lolita” Legaspe Family Program: The Knights of Columbus instituted the “Family of the Month” Program in 1978 to create a greater awareness of our many fine Catholic families. Since that time the “Family of the Month” Program has grown to be one of the Order’s most successful. St. Joseph Council began its own Program to recognize and honor the outstanding Catholic families in our parish. At the beginning of each month, the Knights of Columbus will select a Family of the Month and present them a statue of the Holy Family to display in their homes for that month. Included in the presentation is a certificate and a prayer to the Holy Family by Pope Francis. The Family of the Month is requested to gather together daily as a family and pray for the intentions of St. Joseph Parish.

St. Joseph Council 10287 has selected: Jesus and Dolores “Lolita” Legaspe

“Family of the Month” for September 2019

Jesus and Lolita were born in Yahualica, Jalisco, Mexico. They were married in December 1987 and became members of St. Joseph Parish in June 1993. Both have been involved in several different Spanish Ministries over the years. Jesus has been a ministry assistant in the Rite of Baptism. Lolita has taken several courses at the Institute of Pastoral Ministry and has been the Coordinator of the Spanish Charismatic Ministry of our Diocese of Orange for eight years. At St Joseph Parish, Lolita has been involved in the following Spanish Ministries: Faith Formation, Baptism Team, RCIA and Sacristan for our Spanish Masses. The Legaspe Family has been involved for many years giving of their time and talent to the Ministries of St. Joseph Parish.
