  • THE PARISH REGISTER AND FAMILY HISTORY COLLECTIONS OF THE LATE MICHAEL LEADER

by Mary Casteleyn When Michael Leader, of 119 Warwick Way, London, a former Vice-President of the Irish

Genealogical Research Society, died unexpectedly in 1998, the Leader family offered this Society his genealogical papers. Michael had worked, for most of his life, on transcribing the Church of Ireland parish records for County Cork. He specialised in genealogies of County Cork families, and these families were his main interest during a long and industrious life. His papers and records were stored over four floors of his house in London, and constitute a major collection of County Cork material. The collection also includes Methodist, Presbyterian and Quaker registers. We are indebted, indeed, to the Leader family for this very generous and valuable collection.

Michael Leader wrote about his work in an article entitled Transcripts of County Cork Parish Registers in The Irish Genealogists Vol. 3, No. 5, 1960.

THE PARISH REGISTER COLLECTIONS The list of parish registers mainly covers County Cork but occasionally strays outside the Cork

boundaries as, for example, when a diocesan boundary extends into another county. The dioceses are listed in alphabetical order. It must be emphasized that the listing is not intended to be a definitive list of what exists for each parish; this is a list of registers which were transcribed at some time between the 1950s and the 1990s. A few registers or parts of registers still remain in notebook and shorthand form although a programme of typing these is in hand. The shorthand notebooks can be difficult to read.

The copies were made from either the original parish registers or from transcripts held by the then Public Record Office in Dublin, now the National Archives; where appropriate, if the records were taken from an earlier transcription, then the list below is so marked. If known, the list below will indicate the name of the original transcriber. Additional information may have been gleaned from other sources, such as marriage licence bonds, wills or deeds, and has sometimes been added into the parish register transcription by Michael in his copy. Any information, found in Michael's papers, about tombstones or monumental inscriptions relating to a parish has been put into the same envelope as the transcription of the parish registers. Much of the early work was done in partnership with Rosemary ffolliott, who typed most of it, and who also transcribed many registers. Apart from those transcriptions done by her, and marked as such in the list, she also transcribed the Grove White extracts and the P.R.O. materials that are so indicated in the list. Rosemary also kindly donated several parish record transcriptions to the library in 1998, and, as these are in the same format as Michael's registers, I have included them here.

All the existing indexes were compiled by the late Charles J. Adderley in the 1960s. Rosemary Coleby, now the Honorary Secretary of this Society, typed the registers during the latter years.

THE FAMILY HISTORY COLLECTION Zita Kelly has listed, and put into order, all the family history papers obtained from 119

Warwick Way. Some of this information may be very detailed and some just a few lines on a family but all was considered worth preserving. An envelope or file was created for each family listed below. These envelopes or files have been inserted into the Family History Box Files (Second Sequence) in the library.

  • I am very grateful to Zita Kelly for her unstinting help in removing all the genealogical papers from Michael's house; it was an experience neither of us is likely to forget. I am also greatly indebted to Rosemary ffolliott for her continual support and advice about the registers, and to Rosemary Coleby for her valuable assistance with the shorthand notebooks and with the listing of these.
