Gifts of Love

A Message from Father Brian ~ “We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you, for by your holy Cross you have redeemed the world . . .” One of my strongest memories of growing up in a Catholic home is praying the Stations of the Cross at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Woodbury. I still have vivid recollections of my mom hustling us into the car on Lenten Friday evenings to head over to church for “the Stations.” I can picture a Polish priest named Fr. Thaddeus Semla, the associate pastor, leading the service, and my siblings and I following along in the prayerbook, our knees getting achy from all the kneeling and genuflecting. I can picture the dimly lit church, incense floating in the air, and the curious marvel of solemn Benedic-tion to conclude the service. Even as a boy, I enjoyed being in church on those Friday nights, not necessarily understanding each and every prayer or Scripture verse, but intuitively knowing I was witnessing something special, even mystical. If it sounds like I’m making a pitch for attending Stations of the Cross here at St. Lawrence, I am! We too to honor the Lord’s saving journey from Pilate’s judgment bench to the garden tomb, each Friday evening of this sacred season (including Good Friday evening, when our Music Ministry will present a deeply moving choral version). We pray the Stations in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, and con-clude our time together with Benediction. We have a few different versions of the Stations, but the most popular is still the “traditional” one attributed to St. Alphonsus Liguori—the one I remember from my childhood. This year, we’ve also invited a handful of parish organiza-tions / ministries to participate on a given Friday night. So this past Friday, several of our lectors shared the microphone with Father Tom. Next Friday, 3/22, will be the Columbiettes’ turn; 3/29 the Knights of Columbus; and 4/12 members of the Family Life Committee. (April 5th is still TBA!). If you’re like me, you started Lent with the very best of inten-tions, but may already be seeing some of your Ash Wednes-day fervor beginning to slip. If so, I’d invite you to consider adding the Stations of the Cross to your weekly Lenten “regimen.” It’s a centuries-old form of prayer, one that has guided untold believers into a deeper communion with the Passion and Death of our Savior. Sure, there are other things you could do for 40 minutes on a Friday night, but few will enrich your Lenten pilgrimage like following the Via Dolorosa. Remember, too, that while we “Walk to the Water” in Mary Connors’ memory on Saturday, April 6th, we will pray a ver-sion of the Stations especially tailored to kids. Mark your calendar to join us in church on Good Friday night for the

simply beautiful musical rendition our choir is pre-paring. And you might even check out a full-length meditation on the Stations by Bishop Robert Barron, by going to www.wordonfire.org. It’s nice to have options! St. Lawrence, St. Patrick and St. Joseph, pray for us. God love you!

“IN LOVING MEMORY OF . . .”

We have recently acquired two items that will be used extensively in church for our liturgical celebrations. We invite parishioners to make a donation toward these beautiful items, and, if they so choose, to memorialize them as a way of honoring a deceased loved one. Simply contact Fr. Brian at the rectory ext. 118 if you would like to purchase either of the following for the parish (on your own or with other parishioners), or would like more infor-mation: 1. THE BOOK OF THE GOSPELS – Placed on the altar at the beginning of Mass, and then car-

ried to the pulpit, it is used each weekend to proclaim the Gospel reading by the priest or dea-con. The copy we have now has served our parish long and well, but needs to be replaced. Donation: $160

2. PURPLE VESTMENT – We are fortunate to have a few handsome purple vestments, used dur-

ing Advent and Lent, but all are rather simple, and more suited to daily use. The vestment that “debuted” on Ash Wednesday, from St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, MA, is noble and festive—more appropriate for the Sundays of those liturgical seasons. Donation: $500

PLEASE NOTE: The new Paschal Candle for 2019-2020 has been paid for by a single, very gener-ous donor. No further donations are being accepted.

FAST, PRAY . . . AND GIVE UP YOUR ENVELOPES! It was only a few weeks ago that we completed our Stewardship Re-newal for financial giving, and I’m delighted to see the Commitment cards that have come back so far. (Please don’t hesitate to fill one out today; it’s certainly not too late). Our parishioners’ determina-tion to support St. Lawrence—not just from their surplus but from the substance they’ve received from God—is a huge blessing to our community, and certainly reason to be hopeful about the future. At the same time we were asking each household to make even a small increase in their weekly or monthly donation to the parish, we were also pushing Faith Direct as a means of doing so. Faith Direct is electronic giving: a simple system that eliminates writing checks or filling out envelopes. It not only simplifies your support to St. Lawrence, but allows it to be consistent and uninterrupted through the year. It takes a 5 minute phone call to enroll, or just as short a time online at www.faithdirect.net. Our parish code is NY234. So this Lent, in addition to giving up sweets or late night TV, think about giving up your weekly envelopes and making the switch to e-Giving. Thanks!! Fr. Brian
