Do Our Guns Mean More to Us than Our Children?: Meeting March 4th After Mass!
Answering that question negatively comes easy to most of us. Many of us would even think that it is absurd that the Pastor would ask such a question. The truth is that I have no desire to suggest to our congregation that our children are not the most valued and loved persons in our lives. Nevertheless, it is quite clear that American people, largely Christians, are unable to find the will to limit adult access to the kinds of weapons which one week ago killed 17 children in Florida; which last November killed 27,including 9 children, in Texas; which in October killed 59,including 4 children.!
!
Let me be honest, a ban on assault weapons would only rid the country of 20 to 40 million of the 400 million weapons in the possession of Americans. Let me be further honest that a ban on assault weapons will not make a major impact on the gun related deaths affecting Blacks and Latinos. More work needs to be done against guns and gun violence to change the safety of most people who come from backgrounds like most of us.!
!
Nevertheless, this is a moment in time when an initiative can be seized. There is a donor in our Archdiocese who wants to pay for a bus to carry members of our congregation to the March for Our Lives gathering in Washington, DC, on Saturday, March 24th,organized by High School students from Parkland, Florida and supported by Oprah Winfrey. The March is a public action in favor of the safety of our children and against assault weapons and against gun violence. The donor would like to pay the transportation costs for a oneday trip to Washington from St. Charles Borromeo Church for High School students, their parents or guardians, young adult college students and adult collaborators.!
!
I believe the congregation should speak together about this offer, at least, before I decide whether to accept the offer or not. We will meet following the 9:30am Mass at St. Charles and following the 12 Noon Mass on Sunday, March4th at Resurrection. Teenagers, Young Adults and Adults are invited to attend this conversation.!

Vamos a
