    JANUARY 26, 2020

Sunday of the Word of God

Pope Francis has declared that the third Sunday of Ordinary Time will now be known as “Sunday of the Word of God.” Many people make New Year’s resolutions — a promise to ourselves or those closest to us that we will do something tangible to be a better person, to be healthier, kinder, or to break a bad habit in the new year. This year, include a faith resolution in your plans. As you look back on the year that has passed and ahead to the one that is just beginning, consider how you will walk in and share the Light of Christ.

Is Jesus a driving force in your life? Do you regularly pray, listening through Sacred Scripture, devotional reading, and in the silence of your heart? Do you have others with whom you share your faith journey? How does your relationship with the Lord direct the way you live? Prayerfully consider all that you might do to live and grow in faith. Write down your faith resolution and share it with someone you trust, asking him or her to hold you accountable. Keep your written resolution where you will be reminded of it, periodically take stock, and resolve more deeply to stay on the path of discipleship, trusting that Jesus is ready to walk with you.

    Amen? Amen!

February 2 is the feast of the Presentation of the Lord, also referred to as CANDLEMAS. It is the fortieth day after Christmas, the day when Mary and Joseph, following the Jewish law, would have taken Jesus to the temple to be presented to God. Because the gospel account of Luke describes Simeon as calling Jesus “a light to both the Jews and Gentiles,” the Church has adopted the practice of blessing candles on this day. If you have any candles at home that you would like to have blessed, bring them to Mass on February 1 and 2.

Wisdom of the Fathers Help the Church help others.

Do you know someone who needs help, but may be too modest to ask for it? You can give some help yourself, says St. Ambrose, but you can also alert the Church and other organizations that have the resources to give more help.

“There are many kinds of generosity. Not only can we

distribute and give away food to those who need it from our

own daily supply, so that they may sustain life; but we can also

give advice and help to those who are ashamed to show their

need openly, as long as the common supplies of the needy are

not exhausted. I am now speaking of one set over some office.

If he is a priest or almoner, let him inform the bishop of them,

and not withhold the name of any he knows to be in any need,

or to have lost their wealth and to be now reduced to want—

especially if they have not fallen into this trouble owning to

wastefulness in youth, but because of another’s theft, of

through loss of their inheritance from no fault of their own, so

that they cannot now earn their daily bread. - St. Ambrose, On

the Duties of the Clergy, 2.15

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER… Do I see anyone in need around me that local Catholic charities might be able to help?

CLOSING PRAYERFather, keep us all aware of our Christian duty to give to our brothers and sisters from what you have given us.

Meet Your Candidates & CatechumensEMILY MIHALKOFavorite bible verse: I hereby com-mand you: Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wher-ever you go –Joshua 1:9Favorite Saint: St. Hildegard Why do you want to become Catholic? I guess it started back when

I was a child. Around age 5 or 6, I told everyone I was Irish Catholic (and I totally was not). Over these past several years, I went to Crossroads. Crossroads was a great church, with some pretty rad coffee, but I just really felt like I was spiritu-ally lacking. I had questions they couldn’t answer anymore. I went to a couple Masses by myself & really felt the sense of community and finally felt like I was “at home.”

Close your ears to the whispering of hell and bravely oppose its onslaughts. ~Clare of Assisi

St. John Henry Newman and the Apostolate in the Modern WorldWeds., February 19, at 7:30 PM at Bartlett Pastoral Center at

    Mount St. Mary’s Seminary

The recently-canonized St. John Henry Newman was a master

strategist for apostolic work as evidenced by his accomplishments

and legacy. This lecture by Dr. Jonathan Reyes, the Senior Vice

President for Evangelization and Faith Formation for the Knights

of Columbus will explore Newman’s strategy, its fundamental

principles, and their practical application, drawing lessons for

apostolic work today. Admission is free.

Explore Consecrated Life Meet with local consecrated men and women over dinner on

Weds., Feb. 19, 6:30 PM at Holy Cross Church (1924 Leo Street,

Dayton, OH 45404). This dinner is open to all young adults, aged

18-35—from the mildly curious to the serious discerner—who

want to learn more about religious and consecrated life. For more

information, contact Maria Reinagel at mreinagel@catholiccin-

    cinnati.org or 513.263.6683.

Volunteers Needed to Mentor Refugee Youth Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio (Cincinnati) Refugee Re-

settlement Services is recruiting volunteers to serve as mentors for

refugee youth, ages 15-24, to promote positive civic and social en-

gagement and to support their educational and vocational advance-

ment. Volunteers must be 18 or older and able to commit 4-8 hours

monthly for a minimum of six months. No foreign language skills

needed. If interested, contact Donald Foley at [email protected].

Dresser Project 2020For quite a number of years, Saint Cecilia parish has generously contributed to a “dresser project.” Through this project, we collect baby items that will be donated, through Pregnancy Center East, to a mother who has made the choice of life for her unborn child. Many parishioners find this to be a very positive way to express their support for the pro-life movement. This year’s dresser can be found in the church vestibule with a list of suggested items. We are collecting baby items through February 23. The participation of everyone throughout the region is welcome and appreciated!

Marriage Annulments The Catholic Church dedicates much time and effort to prepare

couples for marriage. However, despite the couples’ best efforts,

unfortunately a marriage union sometimes fails to reach fulfill-

ment for both parties and may end in a civil divorce. The Catho-

lic Church has mechanisms and processes in place to assist people

in these situations, especially if they anticipate another marriage.

If you find yourself in this circumstance, we would like to help. To

learn more about how to get assistance, please contact Joe Fondac-

aro in our pastoral region at 871-5757, ext. 222, or at jfondacaro@

eastsideregion.org. All inquiries are kept in strict confidence.

Being Pro Life Each month an important respect life topic is covered in an en-

gaging interview with someone personally affected by a particular

issue. You can find each Being Pro- Life column in The Catholic

Telegraph and can watch the video or listen to the podcast by go-

    ing to www.catholiccincinnati.org/Being-Pro-Life. This month’s

topic is Mental Illness. Invite parishioners, family and friends to

    check out the link.
